[Q] Won't sync while screen is off - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is anyone else's phone not syncing while the screen is off? When I unlock my phone I'll suddenly get a bunch of emails. Not sure what settings could be affecting this, I looked in accounts and gmail and it's all set up to just sync with no option about doing so while idle.

Nobody?

This is still happening, it really doesn't seem right. My previous phone never did this. I don't have any power savings enabled so I know it's not turning off sync in the background...

Did you check to see if sync was actually turned on? Also are you running any antivirus apps, Tasker or greenify?
Also, Go to WIFI settings>menu> Advanced Check to see wifi is on during sleep.

Sync is definitely on.
No antivirus, greenify, tasker, any sort of battery saving anything (not even the stock ones are on) nothing.
Keep wifi on during sleep is set to always.
In the mean time I'm gonna keep wifi off just to see if it happens over the data network too.

It just seems like it could be a setting... maybe get a battery stats app and see what 4G and WiFi are doing during sleep. It almost sounds like a setting. Maybe a factory reset would fix. Even though that would be last option.

Weird.. it sounds like the data is being turned off when the screen is off. You said you were sure that that no power saving apps are running?
Is it just doing this with gmail?

It's most easily recognizable with gmail, it's hard to gauge it happening to anything else.
And yes absolutely sure.

I am having the same problem. My wifi is shutting off while the screen is off. I have it set to stay awake while in sleep. I called Verizon about it and we are in the process of replacing the phone.

I think there isn't an issue on LTE so yeah I think my wifi is turning off during sleep despite the setting.

Try a factory reset... I know its a pain but it might fix things

I did a factory reset, it still happens. Look at my phone after a few hours and was like, huh, nothing. Unlocked and boom. It doesn't happen while wifi is off and only LTE is on.
I just turned off smart network switch to see if that has anything to do with it.

I'm having the same issue with my Note 4 sporadically not syncing the data until I turn on the screen. So far I've noticed it happening with Whatsapp & Gmail. Running no Antivirus, Greenify, etc either and sync is definitely on so I'm wondering if this is some kind of device defect? Has anyone else come across an issue like this and if so how did you resolve it. The next step I'm thinking to do is return the phone to VZW for a replacement which I hate to do but I don't want a defective device if this is the case.

Okay so having smart network switch seemed to help with gmail, but for example snapchat won't notify me until I unlock the device still. It works perfectly with wifi off.

I'm having the exact same problem you're having. When on WIFI, my Google Sync doesn't work, tested for both Hangouts and Gmail.
I've messed with both the Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep, trying all three settings (Always, Only when plugged in, Never (increases data usage), AND the Smart network switch on/off, and nothing really seems to help here.
Looking for anyone else that has this issue. Super important for me to get notifications for both Gmail and Hangouts while the screen is off and on Wifi, I mostly use the phone for work and communicating.

I was having problems with my wifi not working while the screen was off. I had it set to keep wifi on during sleep. All I can say is that are having this problem exchange your phone out. I did it and everything is great with the new phone. Go into your setting under battery check what your wifi usage is if you do not have a solid blue line you are having the same problem I was.

I have a solid blue line on wifi and still have the issue.
Also I got my phone from costco and have their warranty service which is squaretrade and not with Verizon. Anyone have experience with either place? It's only been like 11 days since I got the phone and I need to go to costco tomorrow so I'm gonna see if they will just exchange the device right there. Though honestly I was hoping just a software update would fix this, but that's unlikely for Verizon right.

Do you have your phone encrypted? I just formatted, tried hangouts, and it was able to sync on wifi w/ screen off. Then I encrypted my phone, tried the same test, and it wouldn't sync on wifi w/ screen off.
(I need to have my phone encrypted for work, so if this is the more specific problem, I'm screwed.)
As for Costco, if its under 14 days, (mine is 11 days), you can bring it back for a full refund. Within 90 days they'll swap it out for the exact phone. No cost to you either time.

No encryption. Also I called them and heard the same thing. 90 days is crazy awesome of Costco, what a cool place lol. And they said a brand new phone no refurbs like a warranty would do even that early.

I might have figured out the solution. I went into my Sync settings, and it was trying to sync Inbox for my work email (which isn't activated on Google Apps), so it was getting hung up on different syncs. I disabled over half of the syncs for my work email since I don't require Inbox, or Picasa images, and made such the bottom setting 'Sync Push subscriptions' was ON.
See if this works for you. On my initial testing of messaging myself in Hangouts and sending email, it appears to be syncing while on Wifi while the screen is off.

WiFi automatically going to sleep is a deal breaker and a damn shame!

I like WP7 so much. The potential is amazing, and after NoDo it was looking to be my OS of choice. However the fact that I cant keep WiFi running 100% of the time is such a damn shame. I cant receive email notifications, calender sync and no notifications from 3rd party apps like Twitter which makes it just utterly useless. I cant have the phone on charging all the time. It's a WIRELESS device and I use it that way. I dont want a data plan either. It just seems ridiculous. I have WiFi access to 90% of the places I visit everyday.
It's an incredible shame really and I cannot believe that it was intentional. It looks like an oversight on Microsoft's part.
All phones I know turn off Wifi when in sleep/standby. Did you know your Wifi comes back on automatically every X minutes depending on what you set your email/account sync settings to be?
My problem is with the amount of time it takes for the Wifi to connect again. On an iPhone, it takes mere seconds, while on my WP7 device, it takes at least 10-15 seconds on average, and sometimes, it doesn't even connect, and I need to either lock the screen, and unlock again, or go to settings, turn off Wifi and turn it on again.
It would be nice to be able to choose whether or not this happens.
Perhaps at some point we will see a simple app to keep wifi always on.

Even if it is true (I doubt it), it won't work when you have EAS emails like Live, GMail and Exchange email and set to push email. In this situation, an active connection to the mail server must be maintained all the time.
my focus reconnects fairly quickly, usually within a few seconds. Android does allow wireless to stay on, but I bet this can be fixed with a registry mod.

it does not come back on when your screen is off. If my screen is off for two hours, and I get an email in the first 10 min, I will not get any notification of it until I unlock the phone 2 hours later. What an absolute **** up from Microsoft.
An option would be better. Though iPhone sleeps Wifi automatically either...
It's not really a miss by Microsoft.
You want to use your phone in a very specific way and that is different than the vast majority of consumers.

Not really... having Wi-Fi on all the time will flatten your battery literally every day. Smart phones were designed to be combined with data plans (try finding one on a no-data contract).
If your phone is plugged in to the charger the wireless will stay on, but otherwise it turns off when it's not in use.

Simply not true. As long as you're connected to a WiFi network (not constantly searching for one) WiFi consumes less battery than 3G. I agree that it should definitely be an option at least.

Seriously. If WiFi stayed on all the time the battery life would be horrible, then instead of *****ing about the WiFi issue this guy would be on here whining about battery life. Some people just can't do research before buying and accept something. And I'm pretty damn sure there's a Registry tweak for that in the D & H section.

OK First of all I did pretty extensive research. No where was this mentioned. Secondly my HTC Desire lasts me a little over a day with WiFi constantly on. Go figure!
I have wifi enabled constantly and data connection turned off which gives me better battery life than being constantly on 3g.

He's right. Problem is, the average consumer isn't stationary, especially here in the US where the majority of people commute, constantly. Therefore, your phone is polling consistently for a WiFi connection, which does eat up the battery. I've said this a few times, this feature isn't there to save battery while you're connected, it's to save battery while you aren't. The main reason it stays on while you're on a charger is because THEN you're stationary, and it knows it'll have a constant connection. If I were to leave my WiFi on all day, and use my phone the way I do, which is every 20 seconds, my battery would be shot in 2-3 hours...
So get an android device. why do people insist on getting phones that are not suited to their needs?

The default on Android is to turn WiFi off, and while I concerde Android's settings heirarchy is a hot mess... I still haven't found the option to force WiFi to stay on all the time... Unless you mean some third party application or custom ROM, in which case I could care less. That is why some applications like Trillian for Android provide an Option to force WiFi to stay on when the phone goes to sleep/standby. The phone doesn't automatically do it by default, and the option is not well-exposed for the user.

Unless you have no reception, the active connection will be maintained all the time. It works over Data and over WiFi, and ActiveSync can work largely fine even on a decent GPRS (i.e. 1G) or Edge data connection.

Yes you will. When WiFi goes off, the phone reverts back to using the cellular data connection. When WiFi goes on, it hands off to the WiFi data connection.
You should still get your emails. This has never happened to me and my ISP had tower issues, so I had almost 2 weeks of my internet connection cutting off every 5 minutes (so I didn't even have WiFi on my phone).
My phone's cellular connection is typically 3 bars of GPRS or less.

I think saying "not a ZuneHD" would be more accurate.
However, Steve Ballmer at the WP7 launch did say "every WP7 device is a ZuneHD."

Please help: juicedefender messed up my desire

Hi,
can anyone please help me? I recently downloaded and used JuiceDefender on my Desire. I configured a setting that allows the phone to learn what are the Wifi networks that I like to connect to, based on location. I soon noticed that the phone randomely reboots so I uninstalled this application. Well, I completely lost control of my Wifi connection. Even if I turn it off in Android settings, the Wifi just starts by itself and starts scanning for networks, which completely drains my battery. I installed the application again and reversed the location wifi setting but it did not help.
I also did a backup then wiped up my phone, but the Wifi still starts by itself. Is there any solution to this?
Thank you!

and the did you restore your backup?? if so i woulfd advice to clear data juice defendre and maybe mail to dev'app
thank you for your answer.
First I uninstalled juicedefender. after seeing that wifi still gets connected, i backed up, i wiped all data on the phone and restored the back up, but without juicedefender (it was not included in the backup). As for the email to the developers, I did that, but I got a response like that: "I don;t think this is possible. Please install our beta application and enjoy." How helpful of them!
Some suggestions
I would be surprised if any app could reboot the phone, even if it crashed.
Do you use tasker or locale? They can start up the wifi.
You could try org.wahtod.wififixer
You could also use something like com.mapeapps.networkcounter to check what is using the wifi. You'll have to reboot after installing it to reset the counters, but then, if it locks on to a wifi straight away, you could see what's using the connection, and maybe work out what's starting it up?
Thank you, I will try what you said. Sometimes the Wifi is just starting, but sometimes it also starts when I open any application that requires an internet connection, even if my data connection is already on. I will come back to report on what you suggested. Thanks again!
I forgot to say that I am not using a tasker. I do have enabled the location services based on network, but I have always had that before, and if the wifi was disconnected in the android settings, then it stayed off. Now it just won;t stay off. The thing is that I don;'t even need wifi, I have a good data plan. But the damn wifi just starts by itself, scanning for networks all the time, draining my battery and interrupting my regular data connection. I am so frustrated! I never had problems with my Desire for one year, and now, after installing this JuideDefender, problems are coming in.
Ok there are a couple of things:
a) If your Wifi is still broken after you uninstalled JD it is most likely not JD who was / is the culprit. You even wiped, so how should JD do this?
b) JD does not turn Wifi back on when you manually turn it off (I am not 100% sure what happens during the training phase, while JD learns you Wifi-Locations, because in these 1-3 days JD might turn Wifi on in "random" locations to enhance the algorithm)
What does the log in JD say (anything about turning Wifi on?)?
Hello,
the JD log says: WIFI turned on by user.
Which of course I have not done. I think my phone is haunted. Leaving JD aside (even if this problem started only after I started to use JD), the problem still exists: my phone turns its WIFI connection by itself, even if I don't want that!

[Q] wifi "avoided poor internet connection", screeoff kills connection

im trying for a week now to get around an issue that is costing me my nerves and renders my phone useless, especially on travel without roaming and data-plan. after screenoff my nexus kills the wifi connection, after some time though, 30 minutes, 1 hour, it seems to change. my company uses skype as the primary means to communitate and i'm just cut off, won't receive important mails, messages, whatever.
when i switch my phone back on wifi starts up again, if im quick enough the settings reveal "avoided poor internet connection" in the hotspots status. so basically it looses the signal for a moment and is not able to connect back on its own. i read 4.0.1 had a setting to circumvent that but since 4.0.2 it's gone. of course keep-alive-during-sleep is checked to "always" in the settings and i tried just about anything, changing basebands, factory resets, cache wipe, etc. nothing helped. the weirdest thing i that the battery stats to not reflect it, the blue wifi line is uninterrupted all the way.
i searched and found dozens of people complaining about this but no solution anywhere. they switched phones and had the same problems still. from little fragments i collected it seems that samsung devices had this issue before, cm7 supposedly fixed a hardware driver that had issues with certain wifi devices on certain frequencies.
im on AOKP b27 now (powersaver on or off with setting to untouched or "leave on" made no difference), leankernel, xxkl1 baseband. today i went back to stock 4.0.2 to see if that does something. still, has anyone here similar problems and maybe even solutions? what about the cyanogens "nexus one sleep fix" i read about, anyone can provide links or informations?
Did you try settings - wifi - menu - advanced - keep wifi on during sleep - always
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Try changing that setting. I know 2.x defaulted to turn wifi off during sleep but I thought they changed that in ICS. Either way that sounds like the problem.
its not that setting, it's the first thing i checked. it's set to "always" and it should never kill wifi in theory. from what i have read by now it seems more of a wider problem, a software or hardware related issue affecting all nexus devices. most people don't know about it since it only fails for certain routers having certain settings (which other phones digest without problems though). i also never knew it until i had to stay one month in a place with a wifi-hotspot my phone doesn't like. my gf's s2 has no problems at all, neither have our laptops.
here on xda people have switched their devices because of that problem, got new ones and the problem persisted. i have installed roms, kernels, stock-images, basebands, nothing helped and i am sure the problem won't go away if i exchange the device. i knew i'd probably not gain much by asking again, threads like this can be found here, on rootzwiki, google, etc., but i was hoping to gather a little more knowledge. to read about cm7's patch for a similar issue on the nexus one gave me hope that something must be out there ...
btw, stock ICS seems to have the best reception by now, it stays connected for hours. but once it looses it, it won't re-connect aswell. my experiences are worse with AOKP. and it sucks because i love that rom so much. i guess when i'm home again it wont bother me since my own wifi is okay - but man, here, in another country it really hits me.
i had the same problem, seems like the connection would drop when the wifi signal is weak regardless of what settings you choose. i saw this problem on 4.01 and 4.02 stock, and apex rom. i had to switch to a router that could broadcast a stronger signal. i would get about 80-90 dbm with the old router and the new gone give 60-70 dbm. it seemed to have fixed the problem, i havent seen my gnex drop the wifi since i got the new router a few weeks ago.
Ive heard some people have a bug with wifi sleep policy setting not working. But mine seems to actually work. Set to "never" is the best choice and after hours of screen off my wifi is still connected.
Maybe try that setting a few times to kill the bug.
“never"should actually kill wifi immediately after screen off I think. If it doesn't that would be just another bug. I read somewhere that for some people setting it to never resolved the issue but i tried pretty much every setting by now, nothing worked out though. I became so desperate I installed wifi monitor apps that reset wifi after they figure it got dropped, but not even these patches could revive it in some occasions. The only thing that works for sure is switching on the screen every now and then.
It's a wifi sleep policy. So never = never sleep.
Weird, mine says "keep wifi alive during sleep": always, when plugged in, never. our I miss something and there's another setting I haven't tried yet.
this may fix ur problem... for rooted phone

How do you get that? It says "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep", which implies "never" would always keep the Wi-Fi off during sleep.

[Q] Mobile DATA keeps turning on Automatically

Every since Verizon pushed the Lollipop update to my N4, my "Mobile Data" turns back on all by itself after it has been disabled. It even turns back on when I am connected to wifi.
Has anyone else experienced this and if so can you please explain how I may fix this.
Thanks in advance.
Not exactly that but I have noticed that now I'm always on 3g when I'm usually on 4G all day long same area this is crazy
Mine is also randomly turning on Mobile Data too after the Lollipop update. I have a small data allotment with VZW, this could send me into overages.
I seen on one thread, searching through your downloaded apps to find out which ones have "change network connectivity" in the permissions. I happen to have 6 of them. Some you can disable, but it removes the updates, other you cant disable without removing it.
Another recommendation was hitting settings from the pull down menu, wifi, advanced, then uncheck the "smart network switch". Mine wasn't checked to begin with, so I'm out of ideas til I start removing apps one by one...
The data has been turning on by itself during sleep time on my Note 4. It caused the phone to use 500mb of data in one nite. My data is always off, wifi is only on when using the phone otherwise it's off too. I called Verizon and they have no clue. This is my 2nd new Note 4 for myself & my wife, nothing but problems. Think we are going to switch to anything other than a Samsung phone.
Well, I've systematically removed all 6 apps one at a time. The Youtube and Facebook apps, I was only able to disable them instead of removing them completely. In the end, the phone still turns on Mobile Data by itself. This must be something internal with Lollipop. I have a small data allowance and I'm afraid its going to go over simply because it wont stay OFF even with WiFi available!!
I would call customer service and have them ship you out a replacement. This is our 3rd phone and hopefully it will work as it should. Good luck
Outcast,
I've had my Note4 since it was released in November. It didn't have this problem with 4.4 Kitkat. It's something new with Lollipop and I doubt a new phone would solve this problem, could be wrong.
How involved is it to go back to Kitkat?
I'm not chancing voiding my warranty. They replaced my phones by them and not by request. Our phones get hot and get a warning then shuts down, apps close constantly and the phones consistently reboot on their own. Then the data turning on by itself. The other problems I don't think are software based but hardware failures. The data can very well be software related.

I have the same problem and i used up so much of my data when i am at home where the wifi connects automatically on everything else. On kit kat this never happened and i am attempting a downgrade so you might want to try that.
I was having the same problem with mine. I also live on the edge of 4g area, so it was constantly swapping between 3g and 4g. In addition to using some data it was killing my battery swapping between 3g and 4g. Using almost 10% per hour when not being used. I disabled most of the verizon stuff, support and protection, Verizon navigator, caller name id, message+, and verizon location. I turned off facebook location reporting in the app settings, and disabled google location. I did all these a couple at a time and would reboot to see if it fixed the problem and after all those were done i rebooted and wiped the cache and the prblem was gone. I turned google location back on so far and its still working the way it is supposed to. It shows a greyed out 3g symbol and my battery life is much better. My phone sat off the charger all night and only dropped 4% and in 5 hours of moderate use its down to 77% left. Wish i knew exactly which app was causing the problem to help you out better but hopefully you can try those apps and settings and get the same results.
Well it worked for about 3 days, but this morning data and wifi were both running again.
Data usage Samsung Galaxy Note 4
Been having the same problem even when I disconnect data ten or fifteen minutes later data is back on. And I've noticed even if I am connected to Wi-Fi data trumps it and I end up using a ton of DATA when I've been connected to Wi-Fi all day, getting seriously upset cause I never used this much data before.
I have same problem with my Note3 running Lollipop. Have tried every suggestion I can find to turn off data, but it is still runs, unless I am on wifi. Data is set to off, 4g symbol in notification bar is greyed out, but data is still on. I have found forums all over the Web with other people with this problem, but no solution yet. My phone is unlocked but not rooted.

Question Z Fold 4: Losing Network Connection When On Home Wifi (ATT)

Hello all!
Got a weird problem, that at first wasn't much of an issue. But now keeps getting worse and worse.
I'm on ATT btw
I've noticed that when I'm on my home wifi, I will randomly have the following issues:
I can't send or receive phone calls
I can't send or receive text messages
Anything network related just doesn't work
It's very random, but happens frequently, and if I turn on airplane mode then turn it back off, the issue is resolved.
I've tried:
resetting network settings on phone
resetting my home network
soft restart and hard restarting phone
I've tried connecting a router to the stock ATT router and using that as my connection
Everything I can think of, short of reformatting the phone completely which I will probably try later this week
I'm on the latest firmware
When the issue happens, I can turn off wifi and it will show 2-3 bars of network but no lte/5g/5g+ or anything. And sometimes it shows the circle with a line through it.
Thanks!

Thanks!

Are you using an e-sim?
I have t-mobile with an e-sim and i've had this happen before. Ended up just restarting the phone.

Nope, using a normal sim card from ATT.
Lucky a simple restart fixed it, I'm at wits end how to fix this issue....making work very difficult lol
Going to run phone without wifi today and see if the issue comes up off wifi.
Okay, so tested today without using wifi. And while not as frequent, it still did lose connection just now. And I had to toggle wifi off/on for it to regain connection....
Guess my last step is to reformat the phone
Just got the fold4 on T-Mobile and had the same issue over the weekend.
Randomly stops getting service, have bars but no data, sim says unknown. Disable then reenable sim and it works until next time.
Cleared cache, cleared network settings, remove and reinserted sim.
Today is my first day without losing network.

Interesting, going to try some stuff tomorrow to see what I can figure out.
I was away from my house and had no issues, so starting to think maybe it's my location....but not sure.
Interesting, I've been getting this occasionally on my fold 4 with tmobile. I'll have apps that wont update data with a 'you're not connected to the internet' error. I recently added duck duck go browser and enabled the app tracking blocker. I've been wondering if the duck go vpn is the cause. Do you use any sort of vpn?

Yeah I use ProtonVPN, used to use alwayson but ended up turning it off as it was interfering with my Tesla Key function. But whether it's on or off, I still get the issue.
I haven't reformatted my phone just yet, but the issue has reduced a bit the last few days. I'm not sold on it being my phone as this literally only happens while at home.....really bizarre honestly.
Also got an issue now with android 13 that it won't work with my Tesla half the time. It just doesn't recognize my phone as my key .-. really tilting xD

Thanks for the info. It's so intermittent it's very hard to pin down. I still haven't gotten the update to 13 so hopefully that helps you narrow your search some.

I've noticed it less with Android 13, but android 13 broke my Tesla Key functionality....so not sure that was worth the trade off xD
Yeah, I haven't been able to pin point any specific cause which is super annoying....
Well it lasted a day or 2 then happened a few times again.
As this was a new device for me, I noticed it wasn't "activated" on T-Mobiles site. I went through the activation process and that seems to have fixed it for me now (wifi calling too).
Likely unrelated to what you're experiencing but thought I'd mention it.

That's interesting though, maybe I just need to go talk to ATT as much of a pain in the ass as it is -_-*
