Okay I know the Galaxy Nexus should have 32GB of internal storage.
So I was installing a new ROM to try it out and decided to clean the phone out and start fresh. So I pulled everything off the phone to my PC. Then flashed the ROM, minimal G-Apps, and the kernel. Then I look at the file manager and I have 5.04 GB free of 28.1 GB. What gives?
I wiped all the caches, prior and there was nothing other than the zip and TWRP on the phone. Is there something else that I should be doing, like formatting the internal memory prior to flashing or something?
Did you come from a 4.1.2 ROM? Sometimes they make an admitting extra folder in emulated.

Yes, I came from the old 4.1.2 but that was about 7-8 ROM loads ago. I do have a "Legacy" folder in the "emulated" folder. Any ideas on how to re-flash to get rid of these remnants?

OK... I'm on vzw gnex using twrp recovery and jbsourcery 2.3 and being an ardent crack flasher I have old /unused files scattered here and there. So, are there any benefits to wiping everything in the internal/ media partitions in recovery? Will this kill the ROM or will critical files be rebuilt on boot, just like cache/dalvik after wiping.
I'm not new to Android but I am new to not having a removable sd card.
Any advice is much appreciated.
Thanks

Last time I tried to partition the SD Card (albeit on CWM), I think it "seemed" like it worked but it actually didn't do anything. This might happen to you too. At the time I decided to just connect the phone to my PC and delete all of the folders.
As far as any benefits, I don't think there really are apart from tidiness. As opposed to the FAT filesystem, which has some pretty big limitations, the Gnex uses ext3 I believe, so you shouldn't really worry about how many directories/subdirectories you have.
As far as killing the ROM, the only way to do that is if you format /system, if you don't then the ROM stays intact.

I jus recentlt rooted my phone and flashed recovery mod and then flashed cm10 and it was working fine and still works fine...
the problem is that in recovery I wiped data and cache and dlvick or whatever its called.I followed the instructions to a t and it all worked fine..but when I went into my sd card info and it says I have 11.95gb and only 2.30gb available. ..I have 7.94gb in miscellaneous files...so I tried wiping again in recovery and flashed my original backup rom and everything works fine except for my big gb games like gta3 etc..so its like it wiped it all or moved it over somehow..how can I fix this? please and thanks!

Get disk usage from the market. It will show you the files using all your storage. It's probably your old CWM backups. You can delete your unused backups through CWM.

Best bet would to just plug your phone into your pc and see what is taking up so much space. if is misc data, i could see it being zip files and what not.
Or it could be if you flashed 4.2. 4.2 has this profile thing that is only for tablets but they just disabled the function for mobile phones. look through your directories to see if there is anything under sdcard/0/. if there is, make sure you take all the data you want/need out of the /0 directory and put it back under your sdcard and then just delete the /0 directory. Hope it helps.
Or just use the disk usage app I suggested and you completely ignored. It will list your biggest culprits.

I just flashed the XenonHD stable 5.0 ROM on my Gnex (clean flash), coming from LIQUIDSMOOTH. Before the wipe/flash I had only used about 9.4 or 9.7GB (can't remember which) of my 13.33GB of data. After wiping/flashing, re-downloading my apps, etc. It says I've used about 13GB of storage, with roughly 500MB left. I deleted all my music which cleared about 3.04GB, but I can't just not have my music. Any ideas on why this happened?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Look in the Storage section of settings. Should show you what's using the memory. Could also be NANDroids just sitting there taking 1-2gb each.
Are you coming from android version 4.1.1?
The biggest thing is miscellaneous files. The two taking up the most space are clockworkmod and 0. I noticed I now have sdcard/0/0. They all sdcard/0 seems to be my normal root folder, but the second one is my old root folder before wiping and flashing. That's where I deleted all my music, since that's where it was before wiping and flashing.
And my previous ROM was on 4.2.1, this one is 4.2.2

Then why did you have to ask us?Update your recovery to one that properly handles the new file system. Delete some of the NAND's stored in CWM. Get rid of all the 0's except one.
I asked because I had no idea that's what I should do. How do I go about doing that? Not everyone's a genius at this.

R: Storage space problem after flash?
Fast simple way Imho is to install goomanager, install script from that (it update to last Twrp recovery) wipe e re flash your favorite rom.

Hey guys, I recently went from TouchWiz to CM 10.1, and today I went back to TouchWiz. I ended up flashing the latest "root66" TouchWiz ROM because it's the official touchwiz with root injected into it. I did this using ODIN on my PC. (I have all my data backed up elsewhere so I don't mind starting over from scratch like this)
Everything seemed to be fine until I started noticing that a little over 6GB of my internal storage was being taken up by "miscellaneous files". (according to System --> Storage) Turns out it's a bunch of old folders and files from when I was on CM 10.1. I did a factory reset before I loaded root66, so what gives? My questions are:
1. Did I miss a step somewhere? Again, I did a factory reset from within clockworkmod and I assumed that would wipe everything - but clearly it didn't.
2. Looking at the filesystem, I noticed that "/sdcard" appears to by a symlink to "/storage/sdcard0". Is this right? I know Android 4.2 (which is what CM10.1 is) changes around the filesystem and mount-points a bit, and I'm worried that maybe I've got some leftover cruft from briefly being on 4.2.
Thanks for any and all help!!

No problem. Use file explorer and go to /data/media. You can see everything there. There will be a 0, legacy, and obb folder leftover from 4.2.2.

Thanks for the reply, before I noticed your reply however I ended up doing another factory reset, but this type I manually wiped the /System partition using TWRP. Then I flashed root66 again using Odin. Now things look better, no more files hanging over from previous ROM's.
I did just go into /data/media and there's a bunch of folders like: Android, Application, DCIM, Documents, Movies, Music, etc, etc. I don't see the folders you mentioned though. (0, legacy, obb) Does this mean I'm all good now? And if so, is wiping /System generally a good thing to do when swapping ROM's around? Thanks again,
As long as your storage is reading as you'd expect, I'd say you're good to go.
Personally, I never wipe /system. If something goes wrong and your Rom won't flash you'll be left without an os till you either download another or Odin flash stock firmware.
Never had any issues doing it this way. Plus when you flash a Rom it overwrites everything anyway. And some devs code a system format into their updater-script btw.

That's what I thought too, but clearly that didn't happen to me given that I had 6GB of stuff hanging around after flashing root66. (using ODIN) Oh well, unless someone tells me otherwise I think at this point I'm good to go. Thanks,
Odin won't wipe your data.

What happened is that all your photos and documents are stored on a different partition. They're still there they just need moved over... Or just save everything on your extSD card.

Just flash back to Twiz. All your stuff is still there where it was and will be when you flash back, it is just locked in a partition that is not accessible inside AOSP ROMs. Move your stuff over to your external SD card, and then enjoy AOSP. The different partitions is due to a changing of naming convention between TWiz 4.1 and AOSP 4.2 etc. Ofc, it depends on how "clean" you flashed and whether you fully wiped the /data/media partition-which shouldn't be wiped unless you tell TWRP to.
There's a flashable zip file somewhere to move stuff between the AOSP and TWiz partitions automagically. I never use it. Putting everything on the extSD is simpler.

That "something" only happens if you have an external SD card that is *not* formatted FAT32...which odds are unless you did something out of your way really special-your card is FAT32.
