(Q) formating all memory partitions - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

OK... I'm on vzw gnex using twrp recovery and jbsourcery 2.3 and being an ardent crack flasher I have old /unused files scattered here and there. So, are there any benefits to wiping everything in the internal/ media partitions in recovery? Will this kill the ROM or will critical files be rebuilt on boot, just like cache/dalvik after wiping.
I'm not new to Android but I am new to not having a removable sd card.
Any advice is much appreciated.
Thanks

Last time I tried to partition the SD Card (albeit on CWM), I think it "seemed" like it worked but it actually didn't do anything. This might happen to you too. At the time I decided to just connect the phone to my PC and delete all of the folders.
As far as any benefits, I don't think there really are apart from tidiness. As opposed to the FAT filesystem, which has some pretty big limitations, the Gnex uses ext3 I believe, so you shouldn't really worry about how many directories/subdirectories you have.
As far as killing the ROM, the only way to do that is if you format /system, if you don't then the ROM stays intact.

use fastboot and erase userdata. this will wipe /data/media aka /sdcard.

[Q] Phone allergic to AOSP?

I have used MIUI since June with no problems at all, I then tried to install the 9.30 update. It didn't install right even though MD5 matched (stuck on the white HTC Incredible screen). I tried restoring to my backup and after rebooting nothing happened. It tries going to the boot animation but doesn't, just goes to a black screen. I've let it sit for an hour there and nothing happens. I tried resolving this on the MIUI.us forums, but no responses so far.
At that point I tried cm7, it worked but was really glitchy and bootlooping. cm6 was next, and it was working mostly but didn't seem stable to run. I then tried going back to MIUI all of them, 8.19, 9.2, and 9.9 as well as the 9.30, did not install.
I am now running the rooted stock rom and it seems to be running fine these past two weeks (aside from the fact it's sense). Over the weekend I tried, again, to install MIUI and restore a backup but it's still not working. And to make matters worse cm6 and 7 are no longer running.
I have also tried all of the above with CWM 3.0.0.8, CWM 5.0.0.2, and Amon_RA 3.02 (no restore to test) and have had the same issues across all recoveries.
It really seems like my phone has become allergic to any AOSP rom, I haven't tried other sense roms but I'm expecting them to work since the rooted stock rom has both installed and restored with no issues.
I have not tried going back to bone-stock and then re-rooting as that would be a pain. But if it is my only option to get back to MIUI then I will give it a shot.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Before you flash a ROM do you:
Clear data: Wipe user data/factory reset
Mounts and Storage - format /system, format /boot, format /data, format /cache
Advanced - Wipe Dalvik
Then flash the ROM?
Before a new rom (not btwn miui updates) I normally wipe data/factory reset and wipe dalvik. But I don't do anything in mounts and storage unless I need to mount usb storage.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
I would back up your current working ROM, try what I mentioned above, and then try flashing MIUI again.
In Mounts and Storage, you'll have the option to format emmc, and sd card too. Just make sure you ARE NOT selecting those items, as obviously you want those intact. If you follow the instruction above, you should be fine.
Got proper HBOOT version?

When I get home I will try doing everything suggested.
My hboot is 92 I believe.

Ok, I did all of the above and still have no luck in installing MIUI or restoring a backup.
Also, I didn't mention this in the first post. When I try and boot from a restored MIUI and it tries to load the boot animation I can still reset the phone with the 3-finger salute, so the phone is still doing something just not what it's supposed to. I did try flashing another boot screen incase there was something wrong with the backup, but that didn't work.
Any other ideas out there?
Tried a different sd? Copy and paste the contents of sd to pc, reformat sd fat32, copy contents back to sd, see if issue persists.
If reformatted native sd doesn't help, perhaps try another.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App
I just tried both a different sd card as well as reformatting my current one, in both cases I can't install MIUI nor CM6.
Stumped here... Only other thing I can think to try is a Sense ROM on either/both sd's to see what boots and runs without issue.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App
As I mentioned already I'm currently running the rooted stock gb rom, which is sense. I can try another sense rom just for fun.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Yep, apologies. Speculation on my part:
Bad sd. AOSP interacts with sd on boot and during normal use, device acts up only with AOSP, hence bad sd.
Also, when flashing the AOSP ROM on newly formatted sd, wipe of mounts (data, cache, boot, and system) as well as factory reset, cache partition, and dalvik, all from recovery were successful?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App
So sense does not interact with sd the same way as aosp? What could be the problem with the sd card that allows it to do everything but allow it to boot aosp roms (especially since I have tried 2 different ones) ?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
AOSP calls on and even interacts the sd during boot, as well as during normal use. If your device is only wonky running AOSP, I'd suspect the sd, provided a complete wipe is done and the cwm, radio, and HBOOT are what's called for by the AOSP ROM.
Assume nothing restored to fresh aosp install, correct?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App
Yeah, a restore or a fresh install has problems. If I install and then remove the sd card would it possibly boot then?
I'm still confused as to how the sd card can do everything else that it's supposed to but not talk to an aosp rom.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
AOSP uses the sd to operate, Sense does not.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App
What I still don't understand then, if it is the SD card, why do I still have the problem with a different sd card?
Is it possible that it is hardware related, or something else, with the phone? I am able to read and write to the SD card when operating the phone, but the issue only appears to happen at boot.
This weekend I may try and unroot and then reroot, just incase some important files got corrupted. as the unroot would replace nearly everything it should fix the problem if it isn't hardware... I'm hoping.
Stumped... Hard to say.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App
Well, I got tired of sense so I flashed the RUU, reloaded CWM 5.0.0.2 and restored my old rom... it worked. So now I'm fixed, yay.
Thanks for helping me troubleshoot it.

[Mod][Utility] Wiping Tools - Simple and Fast

Attached are three recovery flashable wiping tools I use when doing my work.
I find them to be incredibly useful tools that save some power button & volume rocker mashing, and time.
Wipe Cache and Dalvik - Wipes Cache and Dalvik (duh!)
Useful for:
-Flashing GApps
-Resolving app issues
Wipe Full - Wipes Cache, Dalvik, Data, and System
-Wipes just about all data except internal sd card
-Stops just short of a factory reset (does not wipe media)
-Useful for flashing ROMs within a type (e.g. going from one CM ROM to another CM ROM)
Wipe Full Factory Reset - Wipes Cache, Dalvik, Data, System, and internal sd card
-Useful when going from one ROM type to another (e.g. going from CM to TW)
_____________________
This is the part of the updater-script that selectively wipes /data in case anyone wants to add this to their ROM:
Code:
delete_recursive("/data/dalvik-cache");
delete_recursive("/data/app");
delete_recursive("/data/app-asec");
delete_recursive("/data/app-private");
delete_recursive("/data/backup");
delete_recursive("/data/data");
delete_recursive("/data/drm");
delete_recursive("/data/log");
delete_recursive("/data/misc");
delete_recursive("/data/property");
delete_recursive("/data/system");
delete_recursive("/data/time");
delete_recursive("/data/user");
Changing the code above to the code below effectively performs a factory reset
(look at /data/media and you will see your internal sd card)
Code:
delete_recursive("/data");
As Always - Flash at your own risk!
First! And am trying it* now

I use these all the time. There should be no problems.
The only possible issue is that there are additional Sprint specific folders in /data that should be deleted as well to complete the wiping process.
What happened with the other wipe zips?
Um read the post and the part where it says wipe everything except internal sd......does this mean it'll wipe external sd as well or not?
Also does this wipes Sprint specific files and if it does what's the repercussion?

Full Wipe is just like a factory reset, except it does not wipe your internal sd card. And like a factory reset, this will not wipe your external sd card. As shown in the OP it only wipes files in /data.
The repercussions are effectively the same as a factory reset you would perform in recovery.
I added a full wipe with factory reset zip to the OP and updated the post to reflect the changes.

There was a previous mod created by someone who just kind of copied and pasted and the wipe actually wiped some serious items that caused the phone to brick. I don't remember what it actually wiped (partition I think) but it was very important to the phone, it was eventually fixed but there were a lot of angry people with shiny new paperweights instead of phones.

Hopefully one of the local devs that you guys trust will stop by and give these zips the all clear.
Otherwise you will be without some handy tools.

I just wanted to confirm that when I was switching from Paranoid Android (CM10 based ROM) to Galaxy S fre3 2.34d (TW based ROM), I was left with about 2.5GB of internal space because the wipe options in recovery were not wiping properly.
I successfully used the factory reset zip and then flashed a new ROM and now have 11.65GB available on internal storage.
THANKS OP!
Thanks to the OP for his work. Now, stupid "user who doesn't know anything" question;
Some instructions and videos say to use the "format" function (e.g.; format system format cache, etc)
In the command code: what is different between a "wipe" and a "format"?

Just what i needed, it works flawlessly
I was running a CM M1 nightly and wanted to update I used the wrote and factory reset zip and it wiped my entire internal memory...
I'm not sure why this happened I used this zip before without issue but it sucked getting phone restored and trying to in delete at least pictures on the phone.
I noticed that the least couple of nightlies is creating a folder called 0 and moving all directories there. Not sure if that had anything to do with it.
I just wanted to share not complaining. Thanks! :beer:

Sorry you lost your files.
The factory reset zip does perform a factory reset. That is what it is supposed to do.
Are you sure you didn't use the full wipe before?
I always store my important stuff on my external sd card so this can't happen. I also keep the factory reset zip in a separate folder so I can't use it by accident (I've done that before).
And yes, the CM 10.1 ROMs will create the "0" folder (which is for profiles) and will also usually create new (often multiple) sdcard0 folders.

How do you flash roms on the GNex?

I'm thinking about buying a used Nexus on Swappa and I was wondering how roms are flashed without sd cards. Can anyone answer? Thank you.

The same way as a phone with an SDcard, there is no difference. Download, boot into recovery, flash.
Op, "search" before you post.

It's the same except that you don't wipe data/media because that is where your SDcard data is located. Cwm and twrp both work well for flashing but twrp seems to work best because it doesn't give the problem with adding /0 every time you wipe and flash a new 4.2.1 rom.

Backing up internal storage before doing wipe?

I fell behind on the CM nightlies and stable builds so I'm looking to backup all my internal memory (pics videos apps) so I can do a full wipe and start fresh with no issues. Any recommendations on what to do? The gs3 internal memory isn't the easiest to work with. Thanks

Use one of the many wireless transfer apps in the store. Makes it very easy to do.

Please do know
Interanal SD = /data/Media
Data Partition wipe in Recovery = /data/data being wiped.
So what you have on internal SD will be safe as all recoveries don't include /data/media when wiping. They have additional option to wipe internal sd. You don't need that.

Stock recovery wipes internal sdcard because it formats /data. It's by design as a true factory reset should reset the phone to a clean, out of box state. Now, why they didn't make it an option, I don't know!

[Q] Memory Full?

Okay I know the Galaxy Nexus should have 32GB of internal storage.
So I was installing a new ROM to try it out and decided to clean the phone out and start fresh. So I pulled everything off the phone to my PC. Then flashed the ROM, minimal G-Apps, and the kernel. Then I look at the file manager and I have 5.04 GB free of 28.1 GB. What gives?
I wiped all the caches, prior and there was nothing other than the zip and TWRP on the phone. Is there something else that I should be doing, like formatting the internal memory prior to flashing or something?
Did you come from a 4.1.2 ROM? Sometimes they make an admitting extra folder in emulated.

Yes, I came from the old 4.1.2 but that was about 7-8 ROM loads ago. I do have a "Legacy" folder in the "emulated" folder. Any ideas on how to re-flash to get rid of these remnants?
