[URGENT] Is someone trying to track my phone? - Galaxy S 4 Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

PROBLEM SOLVED!
Hi, this is not my phone, it is my mom's phone. (Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini International)
Her battery life has been terrible, so I went to Settings > More > Battery, and found that Google Location Services is using 70 - 80% of her battery.
There was also a notification in the pull-down menu that said "Samsung has blocked an unauthorized person from accessing your phone. Press "Update Now" to update the security policy. It will use less than 500 KB of network traffic."
So I pressed "Update Now" and it instantly said that the latest updates were already installed. This Message was a UI popup, not a webpage.
What should I do?
Help will be greatly appreciated!

If you go to the settings >about phone > what is the model number of the phone, just curious.
About the location thing, go to settings >location >Google location reporting >you should be able to turn the location reporting off. As for the battery, if her phone has ever been rooted, you might look at flashing a custom rom. Sometimes a phones battery life can improve by flashing an undervolt rom, (I think that's the term) what that means is that the phone would use less battery power for the regular things that it does. Plus, rooting the phone would allow you to get rid of a lot of the "stock" bloatware that comes already installed on the phone. I hope that helps.

[Q] Battery Issues CM7

Forgive me as I'm a complete Noob and don't understand a lot of this.
I rooted my Evo 4g a few days ago using Revolutionary and flashed the CM7.1 ROM. Iam now having horrible battery life. My phone died after 2 hours and 46 minutes off the charger after having full battery. The Android System was the largest drainer at 81%.
I only had one phone call that was 15 minutes and maybe only sent/received approx 20 texts during that time period.
Can anybody help me figure out what I need to do to correct this?
I've only flashed the CM7.1 ROM since I'm new to this and don't know what everything else means.
Any help would be much appreciated.
You need to look and see what you have running on your phone. Things like 4G, Wifi, tethering, bluetooth, etc all take up a large amount of battery. Also, your screen brightness eats through your battery. When you root and flash a custom ROM you have to play around with it for a bit to get everything set the way you want to give the performance you're looking for and the battery life you need.
Oh one more thing, I've noticed that the biggest drop in battery is after I disconnect it. It drops down to Fifty something percent in an hour or less.

I never use 4g, Bluetooth, or tethering. I only use wifi when I'm at home and have my phone plugged in to download new apps. I have no idea what is killing it.
I have the Bob Clock App and Minimalistic Text running on my home page. Could that be the problem?
Never heard of Bob Clock. But I use minimalistic on my lock screen. So I know that wont do it. Might want to try a different kernel. Check my setup in my signature. I get great battery life with my setup.
Also, check this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=712990
Also do a google search for how to get better battery life. There is a whole list of things to check on your phone and options to change like widget syncs, transitions, screen timeout, etc. that can double your battery life. It's too much for me to go over....especially since I know for a fact other people out there have already written guides for it.
I've seen all the info in your sig listed on my phone somewhere before but can remember where. Can you point me in the right direction of where to find it on my phone so that I can compare?
Thanks!
Was running CM7.1 using JuiceDefender on aggressive mode, I can easily pull 24 hours and when not using my phone often I can even get up to 32 hours. I have stock battery as well.

Root: The method used to obtain root access. Either unrEVOked or Revolutionary (depending on what Hboot version you have)
hboot: The version of Hboot you have on your phone. This is the white load screen you enter by pressing and holding the volume down button on your phone while pressing the power button. Once the screen comes up you will see various bits of system information at the top including your Hboot version. Hboot is used to flash various PC36IMG.zip files which can do anything from load a custom splash screen, update Hboot versions, and even unroot your phone.
Recovery: Which custom recovery you have flashed. This is found by entering your phone's recovery mode. To do this enter your Hboot, as instructed above, select the "bootloader" option, and then select the "Recovery" option. Your phone will then enter recovery mode.
Hardware: Once your phone has booted up go to settings > About Phone > Hardware. Your hardware will be 0001, 0002, 0003, or 0004.
Rom: Which ROM you have flashed. This is the actual system you see and use on your phone. It can be anything from the stock system that came with the phone or can be a custom ROM that you've flashed via recovery. They come in two types. Sense, which is the style that your phone was loaded with and AOSP which is what Cyanogenmod is. There are ton of them out there. Get flash happy and find one that fits what you want in a ROM Settings > About Phone > Software Information
Kernel: The software on your phone that is installed on the level between hardware and the actual Android system you use on your phone. This controls things like scheduling, battery charging, cpu clock speed, etc. and tells Android how to use it within the system. To find this info go to Settings > About Phone > Software Information
Baseband: Which baseband radio software version your phone is currently using. This information can be found in Settings > About Phone > Software Information
Theme: Which theme you are using on your phone. This varies depending on whether you are using an AOSP, Odexed, or Deodexed ROM. Cyanogenmod comes with two built in themes. Cyanbread and Androidian. I use a custom kitchened version of Cyanbread.
Hope that covered it. Sorry, I know my post is really bright. :-x

Not gona re-post said info, though:
radios, roms, hboots, kernels, and recoveries will be found in the development section.
Theme and apps will be in the themes and apps section. You'll also find mods, ect.
Thanks guys. I think I may have found the culprit. Google Maps was showing to be running when I went into the manage applications screen. Whenever I hit force stop it would stop then restart again so I deleted it. Battery seems to be fine now. I had this same issue with maps before I rooted it. Is there a way to solve this as I need a navigation app on my phone.
Yea, use the telenav app for navigation and leave google maps deleted.
Or freeze it until you need it.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
try using set cpu . that helps battery .
Use a toggle switch for your GPS so that it isn't constantly running. Also turn off the Google network location service. Google Maps is the only navigation app I use on my phone and I don't have the same issue that you do.

Revert Wildfire S back to 2.3.3 after 2.3.5 update?

Hi all
My wife's Wildfire S got the 2.3.5 Gingerbread update and since then the dialer issue has appeared and uses lots more battery than previously. Is there a way to revert back to Froyo 2.3.3? The phone is not rooted or anything like that.
Thanks for any help you can provide
EDIT: Updated the subject to reflect the correction that the Wildfire S shipped with 2.3.3 and not 2.2 Froyo.
Hi,
The Wildfire S never had Froyo. It was initially shipped with Gingerbread (2.3.3)
As I know the dialer issue was already known pre-2.3.5.
You could just use a different dialer or unlock your phone and use cyanogenmod 7.2
Sorry yes you are correct it came with 2.3.3. However the dialer issue only seems to have come to light since the update so I'm not sure about pre-update.
Would using a different dialer from the market work? Does the dialer app not do the actual call? I know a dialer app shows your contact list differently etc... Could give it a try I suppose...
As for unlocking, rooting etc... that is a no go. I'm not doing anything like this on my wife's phone.
You can use whatever dialer you want from market. No, the dialer does not the call. It is just an input frontend. The actual call is made from android itself.
offtopic: the phone seems more to be a Wife-Fire. I often read that "this is my wife's phone"
Ha yes it does seem to be a wife phone.
As for the dialer I will ask her to download Dialer One or something similar and see what happens in the battery usage monitor app (Dialer usually in the 70%+ bracket).
What you need to do is not download a different dialer (not only because it doesn't show pictures etc.), you need to go into settings, then sound, then disable "quiet ring on pick up", "pocket mode" and "flip for speaker". After doing this, shut the phone down, unplug the battery for a few minutes, then re-insert and boot up. This will reset your battery history, from here on out you shouldn't have any dialer issues.

I thought we had tried that but I will ask her to give it another go and see what happens. We did a factory reset this morning and so far battery life has been good. However the dialer had not been used upto that point and obviously the settings you talk about will have reverted back.
I'll report back once we have had a try.
The dialer isn't actually consume all the battery it says it is, it's just a bug in the reporting. Just ignore it.

I've read that once or twice.
How does it explain then that a phone that has been left for 8 hours since charged (very few apps installed) can have only 30% battery left and is quite hot (as if a battery intensive app has been draining the battery)?
The same phone, pre-update, in the same situation would have 60%+ less. My wife has gone from comfortably having enough battery for two days (then charging) to not even making it to the end of the first day after a full charge?!
Ok just to clear some things up for anyone else with similar problems:
1 - Turning off the "Quiet on pickup", "Pocket mode" and "Flip for speaker" modes made zero difference to battery consumption nor the amount of battery being reported as used by the Dialer app.
2 - Swapping to a different Dialer app made no difference at all as when a call is made the built in dialer app is used to actually make the call.
3 - Factory reset was performed before any of these tests and it too made no difference.
4 - The amount of battery used IS being reported correctly as the phone wants to shutdown when low. Again as I've said in an earlier post battery life is terrible once the dialer app has been used. It isn't a misreporting of battery use as has been stated.
During all this we have also been in contact with HTC who have suggested we return the phone so that they can reset the Android version back to 2.3.3 to see if that makes any improvement. Someone stated that this issue was present in pre 2.3.5. Well in a week or so I'll be able to tell if that is the case in the HTC Wildfire S build of 2.3.3.
It is misreporting battery for the dialer. There is something else using the battery or you have a dodgy handset. It's a known bug and all WFS with stock ROMs (at least GSM) have the same problem. I managed to get 1-2 days charge out of mine even though dialer was reporting ~99% usage. The problem lies elsewhere.

[Q] Battery problem

I posted this in another thread but I'm not sure if it was the correct place so I moved it here.
I'm having big battery drain problems with my phone, please see screenshots for more information.
On the screenshots you can see that my battery lasted 7 hours one day and then almost 5 hours the other. I'm not sure what caused that, there was no major change in my daily routines with the phone, except maybe listened to music on my bluetooth headphones for more time than usual.
Here's my setup:
My phone is the LTE version (T999L)
I don't currently have any battery management apps (except for the battery monitor app "Wakelock Detector").
Stock 4.3
Not rooted
Screen is AUTO
Sync is ON
Wifi OFF during my work hours, I only turn it ON at home (at nights, but the battery is normally drained before that).
Bluetooth ON all the time because:
- The phone it's paired with my car
- I use BT headphones when at work
- And my Smart Watch 2 all day long
Casual gaming (I don't play much during the day, maybe for 30 minutes or less daily)
Can someone help me analyze this information to see what's wrong with my phone?

My first guess would be to clear the data from any media related apps. Go into Settings > Apps > All Apps and look for any Media apps (including Downloads, Download Manager, Media Storage, any music apps you use, etc.). Then, click on them and click "Clear data".
Then reboot.
Let me know if that clears your battery drain.

Thanks a lot for your reply Bass_Man25.
OK so I tried this, I cleared data of a bunch of apps (including music players). I basically sorted the app list by size and cleared the data of the most heavy ones (more than 5MB in data), rebooted and left it charging until today, I woke up at 6:30 AM unplugged phone and now at 12:32PM my battery is at 20%, I don't see much change.
I'm thinking there must be an app causing this drain because the bluetooth can't be causing it, but I can't figure out which one.
I've been thinking of backing up my phone settings and such with Kies, factory resetting it and testing it out unless someone else has another idea.
it seems you have weak to mid-range signal most of the day. also, assuming you're Wi-Fi is not actually on the entire time, to disable the wi-fi from always scanning in Android 4.3, you have to turn off\uncheck the option in Settings > Wi-Fi > press "Menu" > Advanced > "Always allow scanning". that will help a lot

Thanks for your reply Cobra281.
I actually don't have the WiFi ON during the day, unless my signal is pretty bad so I don't think that will change anything. And what do you mean with "it seems you have weak to mid-range signal most of the day."? Does having weak to mid-range signal drain my battery?
Have you tried Better Battery Stats? You can find a link here in XDA. Install that and let your ROM run for a while. It'll show you any kernal or partial wakelocks keeping the phone awake.

change the setting as i mentioned, because the Wi-Fi location scan is running, you have to run it via: turn off\uncheck the option in Settings > Wi-Fi > press "Menu" > Advanced > "Always allow scanning".
and yes, weak signal will cause more power use, as the phone is constantly trying to find decent service.

Galaxy s6 bad battery life and a couple more things. Please help!!!

Hello there. Im having some bad times with my new galaxy s6. I bought it from a shop, unlocked, as i noticed it was from sprint cuz its the g920p, which is a sprint variant, and it had on settings some sort of app from sprint. That doesnt matter. My battery life sucks. I have like...4-5 hours of usage, if i use it without a break or something. Also, in settings i dont have the Battery or Battery status section which is kind of annoying cuz i cant see for real what is happening with my battery. I disabled the location, i use my wifi or data and then i close them, i dont let them opened. In my wifi settings i unchecked "always scan for wifi" or something like that. After every reboot i get one more percent of the battery down, and also, after every single reboot, after the samsung logo, "Android updating 1 app out off 1" appears, and then after it "updates" it, its all functioning. Like..i dont get it. What app has to be updated every single time i reboot? Please help me with this...or at least the battery drain problem..
i would start disabling all that bloatware get the easy stuff right in the app draw long press then a small - pop up on the apps that can be removed or disabled then go into applications in settings Menu and disable everything that u dont use most system apps wont let u but after all that and it still drains Then try powersaver mode everything seems to work fine still get texts n calls. Mite need to go to Koop1955s thread Update root restore for all the files to restore/fix that phone here it is link
Oh heres another app that will give battery stats and some of the best info u can find just go to the last few post and see for yourself. Betterbatterstats

Hi! 7T T-mobile version. Is it worth to switch from T-mobile firmware to global?

Hi!
I have bought OnePlus 7T T-mobile locked. After some time of usage I've unlocked it (so I can use every network right now) but my phone still got T-mobile firmware on it. Hence my three question about this phone.
Is it worth to change T-mobile soft version to global one? Could someone point me some pros and cons please?
Next question is about battery life. I'm using it all the time in battery saving mode and I'd set screen to 60 Hz but still battery goes fast. Could You share what are you doing to improve battery life?
One more thing which irritates me is that screen turns off time always comes back to 30 sec (I think every charging) and I need to set it back to 2 mins manually. Is there any way to fix this?
I didn't install any tweaks or something like that. My phone is just like it was from the box but Android updated itself to version 10.0.13.HD63CB. Phone version: HD1907.
It is my first OnePlus so if someone have some advices or something about this car I will willingly read those ^_^.
Thanks for help in advance,
Tom.
Unlocked bootloader allows custom roms and more brick-proof. Custom roms and/or custom kernels can help prolong battery while improve performance
I think so I have the tmo version that I unlocked and switched if I could do it again I would I feel it runs better

Now that you have unlocked and switched to the global ROM, can you still use banking apps/GPay and HD Netflix, or does it fail security checks? That's the biggest question in my mind. I don't want to give that up just to have a non-T-Mobile ROM.
@bryantthesmith From what I've read everything should work fine just don't root Your phone and after You've installed global firmware You need to do OTA update and then lock bootloader again. It's important to do that OTA update before locking bootloader. BUT I'm just a noob so it would be better if someone smarter express his opinion on it.

Yes I have no issues with it I did use magisk hide as certain banking apps would not work because of root but not because of what version software.so yes if I root just use magisk hide and I may have to change the name of the app besides that no issues

Assuming you don't want to run custom software, or root your device, switching to global gives you faster and probably more frequent updates, and also if you are so inclined, to be able to run beta software. You lose the t-mobile bloat, you can get a dual sim tray and run 2 sim cards.
the only perceivable downside i've run into is the shelf page that you can switch with discover goes to shelf only.
Once switched over you can relock the bootloader and google pay works fine.
Battery life - what shows as the biggest drain? How often do you reboot? rebooting regularly(1-2 weeks) can fix a lot of little issues - like a pc, did you turn it off and on again.
Screen auto off may be affected by running in battery saver mode - try in regular mode.
Thanks for your reply @andycu . I didn't notice any app draining battery. Maybe it's running down normally but I'm coming from phone with 4500 mah so there must be a difference. Also maybe You are right with that screen auto off because I'm using this phone all the time in battery saver mode, because I don't need that much power lol. Phone seems super fast to me even in power saving mode. Is there a way to hide notification which says that my phone is in battery saving mode? I'm coming to android from iphone and I didn't find how to hide it.

I didn't see a notification, just an outline around the battery, possibly another difference with the t mobile software. what is your screen on time like? Normal use, not using battery saver, with no hardcore gaming i get close to 7 hrs, call of duty and other heavy games suck down the battery pretty quick, as will bad wifi or data connections. The people getting 9 plus hours are streaming wifi video, or downloaded content, not real world use.
By notification I mean when You take down your upper bar with wifi, data switch etc. there's always first notification (when in battery saver mode) that you are using battery saver mode and red caption to turn it off. I cannot tell You about usage without battery saver mode because I'm using it all the time and I don't have any data haha
Just for someones information.
1) Yesterday I moved from Tmobile to global. Short description:
Unlocked bootloader.
Flashed global.
Do OTA.
Locked bootloader again so I don't have any messege at start that device is unsafe etc.
(PLEASE IF U WANT TO DO THE SAME OTA IS VERY IMPORTANT IF YOU WILL LOCK BOOTLOADER WITHOUT DOING OTA BAD THINGS MAY HAPPEN. SO ONCE AGAIN FLASH FLOBAL -> DO OTA -> LOCK BOOTLOADER (IF U WANT)
2) I'm pretty happy with the results. Not much is change tho but battery life seems better and I don't have that ugly notification when I'm using battery saver mode.
If someone got any questions I will try to answer.
