Currently rooted, running stock 4.4.2. Got a notification of an update....not sure what it would is - 4.4.4 maybe? Not sure if I should update (don't want to lose root). Anyone know what the update is and if updating with cost me root?
Thanks
Same situation
I too would like to know this. Thanks in advance!
You probably already know this, but it's just a ChromeCast fix (and maybe some other minor stuff) for 4.4.2. Some people have reported horrible battery life after taking/flashing this update, so since I don't use ChromeCast (and I'm rooted), I haven't flashed it.

No. Didn't realize that, thanks for the info. I usually keep up with this stuff but there's been so little support for this particular tablet that I just haven't paid as much attention as I usually do.

I could be wrong, but it looks like Sprint/Samsung have put a diagnostic app back in (similar to carrier IQ). Not sure where it is in the app settings, but you can opt out in the about phone settings. Hopefully in the actual eventual ota they let the user choose on first boot instead.
FB17 ICS version

I think this is their way of using Carrier IQ and the average user wont even think about what it is or disabling it so they win either way.

If you're referring to com.android.samsungtest.SlateTest, then no it is not CarrierIQ in any form. Slate is a diagnostics tool that we service centers run that tests the radios and basic functions of the phone.

I am referring to the consumer facing diagnostics tool that comes activated in the fb17 about phone settings. It appears not to be related to the fact that it is a dev build.

I know they announced work with Smith Micro, but I think that is only for data offloading, although Smith Micro does something very similar to Carrier IQ.
It is possible that at some point they may also go back to Carrier IQ as well. I think that would take place once all the lawsuits and questions regarding the EULA etc have been answered.

Sprint doesn't care if you root. They've put out memos saying that it doesn't void warranty ... the tethering ... well, that I'm sure they'd be interested in. That's money out of their pockets. lol

Just remember however this is a TEST build. right now Samsung is trying to see where things are going wrong as well as Sprint since they are most likely testing this on their network as well. If it's still there come OTA then it's something to worry about but till that point and time it would be nice to help samsung try and fix their issues.

I'd have to agree with you. While I am completely against spying of any sort without my input, this is a test build. This isn't a required update, nobody is forcing it down anyones throat. Everyone running it choose to install it. It's great that people are keeping a close eye on the movements of these companies but until there is legitimate cause for concern ie. an official release, nobody should get up in arms about this.

eh I'm here or there with that part right now. My reason is this with the builds being released (I'm sure some Sprint employees are using the build with devices in a test center) this could very well be to cover Sprints and samsungs butt if someone does see this app installed and it lets them know the reason for it as well. I do agree with you I don't like this stuff on my phone when it comes to an official release however right now most people (I myself till I went back to a Stock rom) were running an Alpha that does have issues so sending the data to Samsung to help them I don't see a problem with as it could work out well for us in the long run with a much better OTA release.
i care more about freeing up RAM (thanks to the commenter that has killed it with no side effects)
but really does everyone think samsung is using the reports from all of us running leaked builds?? righhhhht and dont think they dont know who should and shouldnt be.

That leaked screenshot is incomplete. It says nothing about going from K to Q, it just lists hardware, radio, and software combinations - note the many appearances of "or". There is text above that was clipped from the photo. My hopeful speculation is the missing piece is JRO03(VZW variant) that will update the listed HW/radio/SW combos.

You're missing several "somethings". How did you find the answer last time?
maybe i meant to say is there an su.zip or superuser.apk for it...
it's up to you if you want to answer it or keep being anything but helpful. either way, i'll find my answer sooner or later. i know it's a little hard to believe but not everyone eats, sleeps and breathes android dude. the last thing i loaded on my phone was the 4.0.2 OTA update. it's definitely been a while so i really don't remember where i looked.
So I downloaded the factory image and used the flash-all.sh script as instructed by Google. I was running a custom-build 4.2.2 that had some issues, plus I wanted the new radios. Everything worked fine and dandy as expected, but just giving everyone a heads up: upon first boot, when I was setting up my WiFi and inputting my G-Mail credentials, I heard some low-faint music coming from my ear piece. Turning the volume up, I could tell that the phone had auto-dialed that Verizon "activate" number, I guess to refresh what it needed to refresh. It took all of 20-30 seconds and was finished before I was done with the setup. I was worried because I remember people saying not to do this with an LTE device, but it seems to be OK.
This is the first time I can remember or noticed the phone doing this upon returning to a stock state. Don't know if it's new behavior or what.

What battery issues are you referring to? The battery life will be determined by your use. If you have abnormally bad battery life it could be an app with a wake lock or you could just have a bad battery.

I know someone will be through here in a bit after the phone has a little more exposure. It looks like we probably do need a few files that are more specific to this device. 1 thing I already noticed is that some variants of this device do not have a notification light.
