[Q] Slow Download on 3G (Upload OK), not a network problem - Galaxy S 4 Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all
I have an I9195 LTE, the download speed on 3G has been very slow for the last month or so. I don't get 4g so I cannot test it out to see if that is ok or not. The upload speed is seemingly a bit better but still slower than normal. I have tried two different networks, UK based so GiffGaff and EE (T-Mobile) and the problems is identical on both operators.
A while ago I updated to a stock rom which advised updating the Modem at the same time as the original was causing low signal levels. I did this but have now restored the phone to a newer rom and updated to Modem-I9195XXUCNH5. Currently I have CM11 installed (although it makes NO different whether it is a stock, or a custom rom - the speed problem is identical on both).
A video is attached to demonstrate the problem. The problem occurs on two independent speed checking services (the second one was an awful awful app, but done to confirm it wasn't just speedtest.net playing up). Downloads from the play store are slow (max of about 150kb/s) and this is shown to speed up significantly when connecting to my wi-fi (100mbit) showing it isn't an overall problem with the phone hardware.
My theory is something is physically broken in the phone as I have done everything I can to test using different iterations of software, baseband, custom roms etc and even restored the phone back to the original stock rom it had when I purchased it (the speeds were fine then).
Can anyone shed any light on this?

Any Ideas ?

Ever since I unlocked my phone my service is slow! I have a TP2 on the VZW network
I ran the speed test at mobilespeedtest.com and it says 222 kbps that I am under what other people on verizon have got ... with the stock ROM it would say 3G now its says EV I know that its just the icon. also I would only have 2 bars at the max
I called verizon about this and they set up a TT - Trouble Ticket and Verizon people have called me saying everything is fine
I use the ppckitchen to bulid my own ROMs i have try other one here also allways the same problem.
__________________________________________________ _________
So today I tested a theory I had "What if i flashed back to stock and relocked my TP2"
So I did I reflashed to the stock ROM and Relocked
WoW i have full bars now
Speed test is now Showing 3g speeds of 448
So I am left with having to be on the stock ROM if I want the faster speed vs using HTC Since 2.5
Any help on this Will be thanked!

It sounds like you just need to determine which radio is included in that stock ROM, and flash that radio to your phone after you install a custom ROM.
Having read both of your posts here and on ppc, it seems like you aren't experience problems with radios, but when you unlock your radio, which honestly should not affect anything (Based on this info.)
In all honesty I experience anywhere from low 100s to high 700s depending on a lot of factors. Also, if you look at phone arena and multiple other websites, the TP2 doesn't have the best 3g receiver, meaning other phones will get better speeds. I think you need to chalk this one up as normal.
I have based my test results on dslreports.com/mspeed with 200k, 400k, and 1MB files using both IE and Opera (opera turbo disabled).

No service!

I am new to android devices and i bought an HTC desire.
I have the device for about 2 weeks now and I am noticing more and more that it gives me no service in areas where the network should be perfect,i have to restart the device to get service again.is anyone facing a similar issue?
i got that just yesterday.. wasn't sure why.. I restarted the phone and Service came back.. just thought it was an oddity until you posted. how weird.
Happens to me when I'll be indoors (where there's 0 reception) and I go outside again, the phone doesn't always lock onto a network for whatever reason. Quick way around instead of restarting the phone is to enable Flight Mode (settings > wireless > flight mode) and disable it again to turn on the phone radio.
i noticed that also, when i use an elevator it sometimes does not get the network after i go out.this is becoming an issue for me because i have to keep checking if the phone is working or not.
thanks for the tip ,makes the process easier
You could also try rooting your phone and then flashing a different compatible radio rom version as this could improve certain conditions such as GPS strength, Reception, Battery life, Wi-Fi, etc.

I have a stock Desire locked in Vodafone, just did the last Firmware over the air Update and the radio updated from the worst version 5.0.0.something to 6.0.0.02 (I think, not the latest, the one before that).
Reception improoved, not by much, but to some extent. But now it prefferes to jump faster to GPRS data than before. So when I move around the house some people might get a busy tone because weather or mail is updating, and THIS IS FRUSTRATING ...
I tried from the *#*#info#*#* menu to limit it to GSM (PRL) but it made no difference.
Also it gets hot, 10 minutes of internet browsing through wi-fi/3g gets it up to 35 37Celsius and that is HOT ... Is this normal ?
Yeah - I noticed this over the weekend too.
Not for calls, but just for data.
I think it might be to do with Juice Defender.
I actually did a factory reset, just to get my data to work again.
Same problem occurred this morning, so I binned Juice Defender, and it worked immediately afterwards.
FWIW, mines is a TMob Desire...

Actually I did not want to root it since rumors have it that there will be an update on the 23rd of this month to Froyo
I was using a different Radio version but have not flashed back to the original stock version (04.00.05.11) already, after browsing for 10 mins or so, the battery temp rises to a max of 29.5 degrees celcius, which is more reasonable than 35-37 degrees celcius. Sticking with this version for now.
Having the same problem the data goes off all the time and i have to restart to get it back on. recently my phone has been getting hot after very little use.
I am rooted running froyo with the latest radio.
It happened to me today .I am on stock 2.2 , no root. I take the phone from pocket and try to call , its does not go . Now I look into phone and it says "No service " .What crap ? . Now restarted the phone and service is back .The Android is not stable enough still .Basic things like calling should be rock stable .

[Q] Insanely Bad 3G Speeds after Official Froyo OTA

Ok, so I've been a lurker on the forums for quite some time, but I finally have a problem that I felt warranted a new thread, as the only threads I've found upon doing a search are pretty old and not specifically relevant to the issue I'm having.
I recently updated to 2.2 with the official OTA (the .6 firmware, not the early .3 leak) and basically ever since I've had no problems short of a universally ABYSMAL 3G connection. The phone stays connected, and I can browse the web, etc. but I'm getting speeds of about 7k down. Yes, 7. Not 70, not 700, 7.
I've tried testing both in the admittedly buggy speedtest.net app, which actually reported a much higher upload speed than download, and then again with mobilespeedtest.com just to be sure it wasn't an error within the speedtest app. My 3G speeds are so incredibly bad that my NPR app won't function at all. Youtube videos buffer for minutes on end even at low quality, even Google takes about 30 seconds to load. I've tried restarting the phone, I've updated the PRL, I've used the network app to make sure my PRL was set to CDMA Auto (it was)... I'm at my wits end and considering a hard reset. Before I do that though I was just wondering if anyone out there has been experiencing the same problems.
Any magic tricks out there? Am I all alone in this one? >.>;
Sounds like a rare case of your radio being internally damaged from flashing corruption. I'd take it to a Sprint store and they should replace it for you for free.
Good luck
Can you download the OTA manually and attempt to reflash it?
I was having the same problem. It started with the RC1 ROM, then I flashed to the new Fresh 3.1 Rom. Nothing I did helped then I found a page that had all the old radios. So I flashed a few radios back from when I had better service. Maybe you can try to flash a different radio. So far it had been pretty good for me. I didn't flash the Wimax, just try the radio.
Heres the page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485&highlight=downgrade+radio

[Q] Another Wifi issue

Hi Guys, I'm a total newbie to Android, just got hold of a Defy from Clove, UK version....
One strange thing that I've discovered on the wifi connection...
I'm using a D-Link DIR-300, connected with defy by 802.11g
When I first test it with speedtest app, it gives a fairly decent speed, around 1000 kilobytes/sec upload, and 600 kilobytes/sec upload
but after a couple of days, which I have installed quite some app and rooted the phone, the upload speed maxed out at around 200 kilobytes/sec
I've tried...
1. different distance to the router to rule out signal strength
2. unroot the phone, revert settings of autostarts, adfree...etc etc, basically any apps that I can think of to rule out it's related to apps
3. reboot, reconnected (like a thousand times...)
4. try another wifi, I've tried the one at school, the download speed is normal, but the upload speed is also maxed at some point which is way worse than a couple of days ago
5. I've also tried different device (e.g. ipod touch, laptop), they all returned with normal upload speed...
I've ran out ideas.......
any suggestion is highly appreciated!

[Q] Google Play Music Issue (SOLVED!)

Hello all...
Has anyone else been having buffering issues at the beginning of Google Play Music streaming songs? The music will go for a second, stop, go for another couple of seconds, stop, and then play fully. This is on Normal quality and is in places where I can do a speedtest at over 10mbit/sec. Often it's 20mbit or more. It seems like this started happening when the new 3.x firmware was released. I never had buffering before.
I've tried everything from uninstalling/clearing data to clean flashing ROMs. Same thing, and it shouldn't be happening with the bandwidth I have available.
Thanks.

Ive noticed this as well. Have not noticed any difference in quality of music but i have noticed it start, buffer, play, buffer, play..
I also am in a strong cellular spot with LTE and often 15+mb down. So i am convinced its not a thru put issue. I have not noticed it on WiFi so ill keep a look out for that.

I've had GPM problems as well. Sometimes what you describe, sometimes the song starts, plays a few seconds then stops completely. All on good data connections, sometimes happens on WiFi. I also have the latest FW but I flashed right after I got the phone so I have nothing to compare it to.
While we're on the subject of music, does anyone experience crackling when moving the 3.5mm jack during playback? Sometimes the crackling really bothers me when I'm walking.
No crackling that im aware of on my unit.
From past experience that crackling can be from dirty connectors or a bad connection. What your hearing is the arching or electrical components momentarily loosing then regaining contact with each other. OR if it is securely connected in its possible the connector is being stressed to much and possibly coming loose from the board.
The last alternative is your headphones were not made very well and the crackling is coming from damaged or poorly soldered connection inside the male plug.
To test this out try a different cable or different wired headphones with a different cable. IF the crackling stops its your cable and not your phone connector.
I have had these start/stop issues at the beginning of tracks using both my cellular network and Wi-Fi...very strange.
I'm also experiencing this issue. It's very distracting. ARHD 21.0 on latest firmware.
Good to hear that I'm not the only one. I did a support chat with Google Play's support techs and they couldn't figure it out. Frustrating.
I've had the issue on ARHD and Venom. I was using the default modem/radio in the new international firmware and tried changing it to the latest AT&T radio. I got significantly better speeds on the AT&T radio but the skipping problem was still there.
Weird.

Ok, so I finally solved this after trying a ton of things.
I've got the AT&T variant and, like many of us, had been using the international firmware and ROMs (ARHD, Venom, etc.) This Google Play buffering problem seemed to start when I upgraded to the latest 3.x firmwares. I decided to test out that theory by going back to AT&T-specific firmwares and used this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/att...-4-4-3-2-22-1540-3-debloated-sense-6-t2837365
I first tried wiping everything and flashing the 3.28.1540.5 firmware and ROM, which is 4.4.4 not officially released by AT&T but apparently for the identical Dev edition. Didn't work. Buffering problem was still there.
I decided to go back to total stock and flashed the officially released AT&T 4.4.3 version - 2.22.1540.4. Eureka! Everything works great now, and LTE speeds have jumped from 10-20mbit down to 30-40. That's especially interesting because I had already tried swapping out the international modem/radio with AT&T's 1.16 version. That only got me to 20. Flashing the whole firmware and stock ROM got me to 40.
So this is a good lesson - even though the phone hardware is identical and we complain about the carriers taking forever for updates, there obviously is value in what they do to optimize these ROMs for their own network.

If using the build in my thread it has been modified for ATT specifically. All firmwares in my thread are for the US Developer device, but are modified for ATT as thats my carrier.

Ha! Too damned many versions.
Regardless, I'm good to go for now.
