Cracked screen!!! DIY screen replacement? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Long story short, HTC won't fix my screen through their advantage program so now I have to fix it myself.
Has anyone here tried to replace the screen before? If so, any pointers?

Why do you have to fix it your self? There are many reputable 3rd party repair centers out there.
is that not an option for you?

IFixit.com has done a teardown..

Most shops either don't fix M8's or want around $200

Yeah I saw that. If just the glass is broken and the lcd display itself still works, do I only buy the digitizer?

watch a tear down video.
Almost all phones in the last few years have the LCD glued to the glass. Its possible to remove the two but it requires lots of work and additional tools.
Quick answer is no, dont buy just the digitizer, you need to order it with Glass/LCD.
Unless your familiar with working with small electronics dont do it your self.

Out of curiosity, why did HTC deny your claim thru the advantage program? also you can still send it to them for repair and pay for it. Its not like they completely rejected your repair due to water damage or something..

The screen on the M8 is not really "user replaceable" - period. While you can certainly check out iFixit, the conclusion is - nope, not replaceable. Just getting to the battery is an epic adventure. Unless you have a lot of specialized tools, patience, and a lot of luck, I would strongly suggest you just shell out the cash and get it repaired professionally.

Got it, that makes sense.
I needed to show them a proof of purchase because there was a problem with my serial number and imei matching up, since the phone was bought on CL there's no way to prove the purchase. They told me I could get it fixed for a charge but they wanted ~$180

Screen repair for Non EU tablet in UK?

My tablet screen is absolutely shattered and Intercity samsung repair centre can't repair it as it's non eu, any recommendations?
Can't? WTF? Hardware for the screen does not change between countries. You should pay for it tho since warranty will not be accepted.

Yeah ive just emailed back asking if they thought I wanted it repairing under warranty but I knew it wouldnt be under warranty anyway due to the nature of damage / purchase.
They sent this:
Thank you for sending your device to us for repair.
Our engineers have inspected your device and identified that your device is a non EU product, unfortunately we are unable to repair the device and it will be returned without repair.
Bit odd, cant seem to find anywhere on google that will repair it easily

Wow that's a first. I ve never seen any company which doesn't want to make money. Don't you guys have some generic phone repair centers there besides branded ones?

Ive found 1 single one that possibly looks trust worthy the glass on the tablets are glued heavily to the lcd so makes screen repair difficult on this model so I don't think many are capable of repairing it

I haven't done that myself but a friend of mine changed 2 screens before. I think that glue has a chemical dissolver which you can buy online. just google for lcd adhesive remover or cleaner. and there s uv reactive clear glue to stick new glass.
Any company that would've repaired your screen would've just chnaged the complete display unit. The display unit goes for about 275€, so its not worth it. I would recommend changung the glas yourself or get a friend to help you. You have not much to loose.

Ive never done self repair before on a tablet so wouldnt risk it, from what ive heard self repair on this model ends bad
Official service centers won't repair foreign models to prevent grey imports from countries where their stuff is cheaper.
There are a few specialists who can separate gapless displays from the touchscreen. The latter is available separately, as that and the display come from different manufacturers. After their "marriage" they are treated as a unit, offically.
I think there's a thread in here somewhere, where someone did remove the touchscreen from the display. I'm not sure, but as i remember that involved not heating the touchscreen, but to attach some water proof rim around it, pour some liquid on it and let it there overnight. Strange. Is the liquid supposed to diffuse thru the glass, or was there a thermal effect? It was not liquid gas to freeze fry everything.

Broken Back Glass replacement

Unfortunately my back glass broke and I was wondering if any one knows of a supplier that sells them or if you know how much Sprint would charge me. I don't have insurance

200, they would just send you out a refurbished replacement

You can get the back pieces from Amazon they're reasonably priced and there are tutorials on YouTube on how to replace it.
I bought custom ones for 3 or 4 bucks. Since its already broke use a hair dryer to heat it up. Cant break it any worse. I was in this same situation they also make plastic ones. They scratch easier of coarse but eliminate they breaking again. This is a simple fix no need for insuarances or anything like that

OK Thanks. Short and Sweet.
Can anyone elaborate on this......
What is incompatible?
The Case? Which can be modded......
The Screen?
The Charging Dock?
Please don't just say it won't fit?
Thanks

I'm not gonna pretend to even approach jcases level, but if he says it's a no go Id take it to the bank. It'd be a rather involved explanation for a clear cut issue.
True and i respect his knowledge, but like a lot of people on XDA they are excellent developers but doesn't mean they know anything about the electronic side of things.
Well let me be the first to say I hope to be the first to do a conversion, ive already ordered all the parts.
Sprint Motherboard 150 dollars (Very lucky to get at this price, Maybe hard to come across)
Sprint Back Housing 30 dollars
Sprint rear camera 30 dollars
Usb Dock 7 dollars.
Screen assembly and digitizer is interchangabe. Total so far 217 dollars for a Rootable note 4.
I let you know my progress and if I need to spend any more money.

You're too late mang, I already did it. I've got a full sprint body and put a Verizon mobo and Verizon headphone port into it works figgity-fine! Except for servicei don't know if I forgot to connect one of the cables or the imei being blocked means I just get no signals/bars let me know if you get signal, then I'll have a reason to open it again.
I can't don't know how to post pics I'll post when I get the app.

Hmm, guess I need to meet a quota to post images? I was going to post the empty signal triangle.
Turns out I just needed a Verizon sim, which I had in an old phone. It's still one I blocked though

Straight Talk S3 Broken Screen

My Grandson was given an S3 968c and the first day he broke the screen taking it out of the case that would have protected it, So I've been looking at screen replacements' and they seem to be as much as the phone was new , we got it for $99.00 and the replacements are about $66.00 bucks I've looked around and can buy a verizen for a lot cheaper but I don't know if it will work.I'm not sure I think it's carried on verizen it's using straight talk as the carrier. Has anyone run in to this issue and what screen's can be used... Thank's

So unless I am mistaken, your LCD is still intact. All you need to repair is the Lens Glass. They come in kits and tend to be universal and cost anywhere between $5 and $10 for the repair kit. As Example:
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Repl...qid=1466173519&sr=8-2&keywords=s3+galaxy+lens
There are many sources for these kits.

HTC10 Screen Problem. Is this hardware or software related?

Hey guys.I'm new here and I'm a HTC10 user for the first time. Before this phone I used LG Nexus4 and P970.
I'm loving this device so far.The device is with me for 7-8 months. But last month it snowed here in Turkey and I was on my way to basketball match at night in the Arena.I saw this issue for first time at that night.Thought it's about cold weather(because it's metal body?).BTW I've got a Spigen's 2 pieced case.
Also this device has been already RMAd once because of screen popped out(glue was not strong enough I guess).
But this month I'm seeing it almost everyday. When I touch screen with a little pressure it's going away for a second and comes back or not(it's just random sometimes).Sometimes I can't even take photo because of randomness of this issue. Also there's a little white dot in the bottom right corner of screen. It appears at white backgrounds and it's brighter than other areas. This is also an issue for me.
Tomorrow I'll RMA my phone to local service in here.
Just wanted to let you guys now about this and ask what it is all about?
It was my first subject in the forums. So sorry if I'm on the wrong place and sorry about my english. It's just not that good

It has a lot of display problem. HTC 10 is flawed
Today I got the call from repair service. They said my device is repaired. Here's what's changed:
-Motherboard(New IMEI)
-Cpu (Dunno why)
-Lcd screen (From Sharp to Tianma)
Everything is perfect for now.Happy to get back on my musics with this phone and Hd598Cs. :highfive:
There's one thing I noticed because I used both LCD screens from Sharp and Tianma.
Sharp had a shadows(kinda look like it) on the side of panel. And Tianma has a yellow tint at bottom side of screen. Some guys said that It's glue and will go in time

Sounds like they've repaired it rather than swap it out. A like for like would have been the best outcome for yourself.

Yeah I'm happy with the way of solution.
Because someguy in here(Turkey),got a swap report and waited for a new device about 3 months.Because our services gather all devices in together once in month and at that time there was no swap unit for the guy.So he just waited, waited and waited...
But here's the thing,if you're going to change mobo, cpu and LCD;why don't you just swap? Only things that aren't repaired probably the camera, speakers, antennas etc.

Released in April, I got mine on release day, could be a faulty batch. As you can't really communicate with htc directly (as in the tech who'll be looking at the phone) you have very little sway over what they do next.
It'd be interesting to see if they share notes with each other based on your case file, perhaps talking with them directly they can agree that a like for like replacement would be the most viable option moving forward. If not I'd say insurance would be the only other option, besides third party but at this point a patch up wouldn't fill me with confidence.
Sorry mate, not a lot more I can think of.

Nvm, mine is a sharp.
You can identify it with the Dev check app. Not sure if that's what you already used.

Yeah that's how I checked my screen. If you ask about serial number it was on the box or in the box. There was a sticker on my box when I bought.
And btw I got my phone back from repair last week. They repaired it quick, about 3 days. There's no problem but the yellow tint at bottom of screen. It's a common issue with Tianma,at least people say so.

Well there's difference between UK Customer Services or HTC UK and HTC Turkey. For example: HTC Turkey says "You can replace it or get a reserve phone while yours is getting repaired, bla bla. But services say they'll give it to you if yours is not repaired after 10 work-days.Also HTC Turkey is not good at marketing, production or customer services. Some guys waited 3-6 months for replacement unit.
I'm using the same device but first time screen popped out from bottom left and changed. Also back button light was very dim than the other one. Then there was this screen problems at imgur album appeared, showed line like artifacts and white dot at bottom right(That's white dot is also common in a lot of users).Screen, mobo and CPU changed but still with the same metal body(I know it because there's a tiny dent at the body).

Appreciate different regions may have different levels of customer service, even though I strongly disagree with this.
Perhaps a complain to htc global? Explaining your predicament?
I'm not sure mate,
