I tried for the first time to assign ringtones to my contacts. Before I touch anything, I see default as tingtone. If I set another one, it still shows default. Do you all have the same? Is it a bug?
Never had that
Do a search for ringo lite on the market, put ya mp3 rintones in a folder on ya sd card called ringtones, ringo lets ya add custom rintones and message tones for individual contacts

But w do this if there is a built-in functionality and I don't care too much about custom mp3's ? The built-in ringtones will be enough for me as I only need to distinguish 3 major contacts. Is there known issue which stops you from assigning custom ringtones? I remember the same problem with TyTN and WM6.
I also had this problem, you can choose whatever you want from the list but it just switches back to default.
After a reset, back to factory settings, it works like it should.

But if you do this, you lose all your application setups and configuration, right? Is there a way to backup all your apps and then bring them back fast or this will also bring the problems back as well?
I just started from scratch again. Apps installed from market will reinstall after initial setup.

Nope, not seen this. I assigned a new ringtone to my wife by going to her details in the People list and picking a new ringtone. Worked fine. Just done it again to be sure for my parents, no problems.
The only issue, if you want to call it that, is that whilts my wife's mobile now has the Imperial Walk form Star Wars as her ringtone so does my "home" number. I guess that's because that number also appears in my wife's list of phone numbers.
I think it won't be necessary to reset. I noticed that this happens only to the contacts I synced from Outlook. If I create manually a new contact, either on the phone or google, I can change its ringtone. So, there must be some catch for this.
I am suspicious of either the "Missed Reminder" app, "Tasker" or maybe "Easy Filter" if it is due to apps.
Is anyone using those and doesn't face the problem? even better, is anyone also syncing contacts from Outlook and isn't affected?
It's even worse than I thought. I tried to use blocked callers and see what happened:
1) If I try to block any contact from my people list, it won't change to on/off but a specific contact which I added manually will be blocked instead (always he is the one and as far as I remember, he is the only contact I added manually and not from Outlook)
2) Now, if I try to enter the blocked contacts list, I can unblock that one but if I click on add contacts (to manually block some of them), they will be blocked but then I cannot unblock them. I tried to restart and even enter safe mode but nothing.
I thought it might be the easy filter app which blocks calls and sms so I uninstalled it but again no change.

Ok, you are right as I did hard reset and then it works because the contacts are synced back from gmail account backup. However, try to do the following:
1) change a few contacts ringtone
2) create a new contact on your phone and change its ringtone
3) now try to change the ringtone on a contact that you haven't changed its ringtone previously (it won't work). If you change one that was changed before creating that contact it will be ok for that one.
If more people can confirm this, it must be a bug.

I can't recreate this problem.
But to be honest, I could be doing something wrong at part 3 of the instructions. I had to read that line a few times before it made any sense.
The contact + ringtone problem must be related to the difference in gmail / outlook sync settings. After I changed those settings to outlook the problems started, the factory reset set them back to gmail and the problem is gone.
Maybe 'problem' is a bit overdone, 'inconvenience' would be better. (for me)

Point 3 is:
Now that you have a new setup (after hard reset), try to change the ringtone one a contact that you have created on your phone locally (not from sync). If you don't have, create a test conact and change its ringtone.
Then, go to an old contact which was brought from Outlook sync (but one that you haven't changed after your reset) it must be showing as plain default without the name of the ringtone mp3. Try to change the ringtone for that one.
I hard reset 2ce so far and I have only 1 contact which I created on the phone. Whenever I change this one, everything breaks. I deleted it and started from scratch again but then it came back from gmail restore so, after I changed its ringtone again just to test, all other contacts (which I haven't chaned) locked so, I can't change those now but I can change those which I changed before I touched that contact.
I've tried again but I couldn't reproduce the error.
Maybe that's because after my factory reset all contacts synced from gmail.
With everything I've installed and configured I'm not keen on doing another reset to try syncing with outlook.
FIXED: I found a solution. Apparently, HTC sync cannot cope with double sync between phone-gmail-outlook. So, I did the following:
1) Disabled gmail sync since I used it only for backup and quick restore. I don't use gmail though
2) Deleted all contacts from the phone
3) Backed up all contacts from Outlook since they will get deleted at next sync
4) Synced and all contacts lost from Outlook but copied back from backup and so, synced back to the phone.
Now I can change ringtones and block settings for all users even if I create new contacts locally as long as I don't mess with gmail. I assume that the same will apply for those who decide to sync only with gmail but I cannot confirm this as I never saw any contacts or calendar entries anywhere in gmail and so I could not test it.
F**k. It came back again. Here is what I did:
1. Created a new contact on the phone
2. Since with Outlook
3. Changed ringtone on that contact
4. After that I couldn't change ringtones on other contacts which I haven't modified before but I could change those who I have previously changed. Also, I can't block them.
Maybe the bug is on Outlook sync after all and not on gmail sync.
I own the HTC Legend and have exactly the same problem. Never used GMail Sync, I am always using Outlook. However there is one contact in my list that works Thanks for trying a hard reset, since it is useless I'm not gonna try it
What about assigning spesific ring tone for Gmail Groups?? Is it possible, because I have got groups like Family, Friends, Business etc... and I want to understand which group contact calls when the phone rings?

I am not using gmail so, can't tell but I tracked the problem down to Outlook. Now, I use Outlook 2010 and I'm wondering if it's limited to that version or to older versions as well. If other people have the same with other versions, please announce it here in order to limit our troubleshooting area.
BTW, if anyone is interested, I have a workaround:
No need to hard-reset,
The problem is that certain functions like ringtones and blocklists are not compatible with Outlook and when synced, they get messed up. However, if you modify one contact before you create a new one on your phone, that one will be ok. This is not acceptable though.
What you can do to temporarily resolve the issue is:
- Backup all your contacts in another Outlook folder
- Delete all contacts and sync
- Copy them back from the backup folder and sync.
Everything comes back without their ringtone/blocklist properties and you start from scratch.
It will happen again soon though but if you already assigned you important ringtones and blocklists, you will be fine.
HTC doesn't accept this as a bug but rather to a problem caused by a 3rd party tool. However, I don't accept that excuse
When I flash CM6/CM7 on my EVO, I am able to send emails to anyone in my Exchange/Active Sync directory. The contacts do not show up in my contacts app, but when I enter a name of a co-worker in the "TO" field in email, all associated names in the company directory show up. *which is expected*
However, when I go back to stock ROM (HTC Sense), and setup my Exchange/Active Sync stuff, co-workers in the company directory do not show up as they do when running an AOSP ROM. I made sure "sync contacts" is selected but nothing works.
Has anyone else experienced this, or know of a fix?
I am using the default email app with both ROMS, and setting up the email correctly.
I can send and receive email just fine. All of my work calendar items are visible, and do sync. It's just the contacts I am having trouble with.
Thanks.
I was wondering if anyone was having problems syncing to their exchange servers that were running virtuous rom. I liked the ability to sync my calendar and contacts from my work computer to my phone and now can't seem to get it to work.
I can get k9 to work for my email at least, but it doesn't give the option for syncing calendar and contacts the way the stock app does. I'd also rather not drop $20 on touchdown since it gives me the same functionality that the stock mail app gave me.
Is there actually another option to sync my calendar and contacts from my exchange server that I'm missing in k9?
Sent from a tin can and a piece of string.
Was virtuous the first rom you flashed? Your exchange settings may prevent you from syncing with a new phone until you remove the old one. Every time you flash a new rom, you get a new digital signature, or a "new phone" as far as exchange is concerned. I had this problem and went through three different roms before I figured out it wasn't the roms fault.

yeah, it's the first rom I've flashed on my Dinc2. I previously had my exchange set up on this phone and before this, it was setup on my fascinate. how would I go about removing the previous phone from my exchange server? Would I have to speak with tech at my company to get it fixed?
Exchange Mobile Device Management
If your Exchange admin has opened it up, you can access your phone info under your OWA (Outlook Web Access) portal.
Log in as normal, then click on the Options button in the top right, then on Mobile Devices on the left column. You should be able to see all the previous phones in there and can remove them if needed.

Hi there,
I'm trying to configure my wife's hotmail account on her wildfire s using the default mail app and exchange server option, but i only seem to be getting the past few days emails come through.
The folders display properly, but if there were no recent emails, the folders appear empty.
I've configured the account from the "past 3 days" to "display all emails", but this makes no difference.
I can set up a pop3 account and this will display everything in the inbox successfully, but obviously without the folder functionality which is no good.
Has anyone else experienced this problem, or can point me towards a solution pls.?
Regards, S.
Hi, I'm a few days into using my HTC One X (first time Android user having just switched from WM6.5) and have found a problem with syncing with Exchange Activesync (Office 365). I'm set up to sync mail, contacts, calendar and tasks with EAS. The problem is with my contacts in the stock "People" app.
I notice for new EAS contacts that I create from the phone (i.e. from an incoming call or SMS), the contact is synced up to OWA and Outlook. But when I make a change to the contact item from OWA or Outlook, the changes do not sync back to the phone. However, if I make another change to the same contact from the phone, it will sync up. It's only syncing one way i.e. from the phone.
This does not happen to the other contacts that were originally downloaded to the phone from Exchange. Meaning, changes to these other contacts will sync both ways - from OWA/Outlook to the phone and vice versa.
Does anyone else have this problem? Better yet, a solution?
Thanks in advance.
ps. If it's any help, I've also downloaded Touchdown to my phone to test. But note that the contacts in Touchdown are not copied/linked to the native phonebook (People app).
Hi UKC1,
What happens when you add a new contact from the Exchange end? Does it sync to your phone, if so do edits to that contact on the phone sync back?
I have Exchange so I will test this for you now, but on the surface it would sound like the contacts that you have added from receiving a call or an SMS are going to a different address book behind the scenes, one that is outside of the Exchange sync scope.
EDIT: I note that when I enter the 'People' app on my phone, and manually add a new contact, I am able to choose from four address books (SIM, Phone, Exchange, Google).
Whilst I haven't tested any further just yet, it could be the issue I mentioned above that you are not creating the contact on the phone inside the 'Exchange' address book, and therefore it will not sync with Exchange.
I was able to reproduce your issue. Create contact on phone in default address book (which is Exchange), contact syncs to Exchange OK. Make change on phone, change updated Exchange OK. Make change in Outlook, contact did not get updated = FAIL. I waited quite a while too (all other changes were instant).
........
However, maybe I have some good news for you, the contact DID get updated after I rebooted the phone.
Can you please confirm that works for you?
Yes, you have reproduced my exact problem. And I tested it again today - same thing. I guess I'm not the only one with this problem then. I elevated it to HTC but there's no response yet.
Anyway, so I rebooted as you suggested but no it didn't work - the outlook/exchange-amended changes DID NOT sync back to my phone. Only when I removed the EAS account and re-setup the account did everything sync. Then I tested it again by creating more contacts from the phone.
Funny thing is that now some of phone-created contacts are syncing both ways now. But others are still not.
I can keep testing but my actual EAS account has 3000+ contacts. There's no way I can keep track what is synced.
This people app is just looking unreliable. Any other ideas?
Nothing that I know of with EAS support. Could be because you have a large number of contacts. If I was to suggest anything it would be split them up into groups. Then again with 3000 contacts I would assume you have already done that! Perhaps try an AOSP ROM such as Trips CM9 and try the default ICS experience to see if you have the same issue. Could be the People app, could be the EAS support within ICS itself. Would be interested in your findings.
