I was wondering if there's any way to prevent android from killing programs immediately after i press the home button or switch to other programs.
For example, I'm browsing the Web when an sms comes in. Using home button (long pressing) I switch the task to answer and when I come back, the browser is gone and i have to load the page again (although it reloads in the same state).
It's really annoying. Reloading a webpage is not a problem but what about playing games?
I'm running InsertCoin 1.5, have about 80- 90MB RAM unused. And I doubt that I had RAM shortage
Thanks for reply
Your brought up that old horse (debate) on why the android OS does or does not need task managers. Yes, the wonderful engineers at android, developed a platform unlike windows, manages processes (by some opinions) way better than Windows. When you switch screens, it freezes the process, and holds it until you come back. When the phone starts to run out of allocated memory, it starts to kill the (less used) processes.
Now, I've heard of allocation of process levels to cause some apps to continuous run, which would be an interesting development for some dev to take on. You can select what apps you'll like to constantly run even if you switch screens. This would help those who would want to quickly drain their battery for OS calibration purposes.
If I find such a solution, ill report back.

Android should never kill the 2nd process in line (aka the Browser when switching to SMS), unless you're extremely short on RAM. In low RAM conditions, it will kill the farthest from recently used app in order to free up RAM.
How often do you notice this? is it always killing the app you switch from? Because this isn't correct (unless you're literally out of RAM as I said).

Like i said. I had plenty of free RAM. So it's unlikely that I have RAM shortage.
I spent the morning examined things. Just figured I it out:
Flash this over and I have 3 apps in line.
Combine with Perfect task switcher, I got what i wanted.
Also, I noticed that switching by long pressing HOME button and choosing apps cause the app to restart while using BACK button won't
I don't know if this is Android behavior or my device's issue
But anyway, I got it sorted out
Thanks you u guys
I'm running CM7. Long pressing home and switching between numerous apps I've never had an app close on me. Must be a ROM/device combination situation for you...
Hi,
I'm using HTC Desire Z about 3 days but I have a serious issue.
My phone sometimes (f.e. if its screen locked for a long time) doesn't respond to me. I'm trying to open it with power button, no response. First when I saw this, I thought because of low battery but when I try to recharge still no response.
The phone only works if I remove battery for 3-5 seconds and insert again.
I have no clue what (or which program) does that.
I'm using stock rom 2.2.1. Here is my widgets: Agenda, messages, friend stream, watch with 8 shortcuts, bookmarks (visual one), gReader Pro, Grooveshark, PowerAMP, Radio.
Also I installed some other installed applications: Youtube, simple Last.FM scrobbler, Lyrics APP, Advanced Task Manager, Diversion, NASA App, Wikipedia, Google SKY, Zaytung (Turkish site app, like news site), Facebook for Android, Tunewiki, Kindle, Connectbot, Meebo IM, Alchemy, Angry Birds, MoboPlayer, RockPlayer, IMDB, Foursquare, Goggles, Skype, Dropbox, Barcode Scanner, WhatsApp Messenger, Camera360, MangaWatcher, PaperCamera, Photaf, Piacas Tool, Raging Thunder 2, Wifi File Explorer.
I'm using pattern lock for screen lock.
One last thing, this happened after I forgot my phone at charge for 7-8 hours. But this is its 2nd charge. And after charge I've transfer some data to phone (I've 8gig sd card, now there is approx. 32mb free at SD, 818MB free at internal storage). Maybe I should remove some files from my SD Card?
That's all. What can I do?
Thanks.
are you rooted, and over or under clocking?
Your SDcard being almost full shouldn't be any kind of issue. What kind of free phone storage do you have? And what amount of free RAM do you have when your phone is just sitting at a homescreen?
If you're not overclocked or rooted, it sounds like you might be looking at some sort of either super poorly coded app (or combination of apps) thats crashing your phone while its sleeping, or you have a hardware defect

No, like I said before I'm using stock rom and I do nothing except installing app and transferring some files (music, video etc. to SD card)
32mb free at SD, 818MB free at internal storage. Now, I opened advanced task manager and I have 111M free RAM. And I see there is a lot of application running. (including skype, whatsapp, grooveshark etc.)
I read something like that from another phone. They do factory data reset and It fixes that issue. I didn't try but they say.

Thanks for the info. So if your phone is completely stock and its crashing while sleeping, it looks to be an issue with an app or bad combo of apps. You can try to troubleshoot on your own by uninstalling or monitoring apps, or you can always do a factory reset and start over, hoping to fix the issue. I personally would try to troubleshoot some recently installed apps or large changes you've made before you decide to bother with a full factory reset.
Also on a side note, ditch the advanced task killer. Its not necessary on anything over Android 2.1, and drains more resources and can actually cause problems. If you want to know what's going on with your apps, use something like Watchdog Lite (which I use), that monitors apps and informs you if they're misbehaving above normal levels, but never kills or changes any apps without your approval.

Yes, I'm thinking on monitoring applications but is there a way to look the report after phone crashes? Trying Watchdog.
Let's try that way.
Thanks.
Now, I'm using watchdog for 10 hours. Archive Viewer (normally) and News exceeded threshold. I looked at News. (actually it is Google reader) It tries to sync my Google reader account and in my account there are a lot of items (and a lot of unread ones, subscribed to 35 site, each one has min. 1000 unread item and min. (unread count)*3 read items, I suppose)
Maybe this application causes this problem. I closed syncing (I'm already using gReader) and I hope this will fix my problem.

Yea that sounds like it might be an issue (but you never know). Basically what can be happening is that its overwhelming the phone while sleeping and its crashing, and there's not enough CPU power to turn on the screen or wake up.
Also, don't know of any way to get a log of your crashes without root. Someone else can chime in if they know.

Also, when phone crashed I tried to call my phone number and the phone doesn't ring (it says can not be reached). So, It totally closes the phone after crashes. But, the interesting thing is I'm unable to open with its power button. I think this is because phone's fast boot option is enabled. That may can explain why power button doesn't work and removing and inserting battery works.
Hi again,
I talked with another desire z owner who has that problem. He said that if you use navigation and turn off gps sattelite from settings and lock screen. Phone crashes. I tried that. And phone crashed .
So, I'm planning to ask for replacement from store.
What else can I do?
my defy is just 2 weeks old and i have started experiencing trememdous lags....
its 2.2.2 running , kernel is 2.6.32.9-g0671d13 , just in case it could help in finding a solution...
1. the screen goes off on its own half of the time (even though the time out is of 1 minute) and even when i unlock it , it again goes off.. ITS REALLY FRUSTRATING
2. i have just 1 game installed, but even then the phone lags a lot, the game lags and so does the entire phone..!
3. the internet isnt getting activated (i guess thats a network problem though), anyone with a similar problem!?
please post replies as soon as possible..
well i too experience the same, mine is 30 days old...
I have disabled gps/data/wifi/auto brightness to get max battery yet it fails to go beyond 1 day even if i use max an hour of wifi.
screen going blank on it own is frustrating
moto widget for time and date does not keep current time
lag in touch even after running ATK on auto aggressive mode
defy is running indian 2.2.2
p.s. any idea if i can get data on first date of use for battery? I somehow feel a new one should give more standby life.
my phone does last around 1 1/2 days with an hours gaming....and it does keep the current date and time (as of now)...
mine too lags inspite of the ATK being on autokill.... even the homescreen takes time to load after pressing the home button ...
Might want to try getting rid of ATK.
Tasks/services run for a reason on android. When something kills them, they'll start back up, causing more cpu and memory usage than if you'd just leave the service running.
Run for a reason, but not necessarily a good one. Stock motorola/vodafone firmware that I had on my defy would run many completely irrelevant processes - VF360, newsandweather, amazon mp3, etc. Task killing isn't the solution because they just start up again.
The best way to get best performance from the phone is to install CM7.
You could try to wipe in stock recovery. Check http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1216982, point witch says Froyo laggy. You will lose all data.
If you find it laggy afterwards, you will never be happy with the preferments on stock froyo. Then try CM7. You will be able to downgrade to send it to warranty as I also did this. It is quite a difference.

Is it going off while you are holding it by the top, with a finger on the left of the speaker hole?
If it is the case, it is because you are masking the proximity sensor. And if you have the "Pocket detection" feature activated, it will cause this annoying stuff...
Well not to worry even mine was laggy before, i had just installed 2-3 apps. I had to restart my phone at least once then i installed cm7 rc1.5 Now its very fast and i dont remember the last time when my phone was lagging and freezing.
I guess it has something to do with the froyo and motoblur on defy that makes it laggy.
You have to have get rid of stock froyo after owning a defy.. thats the truth..
I did a readup on the ATK stuff and the excerpt from the and dev documents... well since the read i have uninstalled all task killers... (kept one just in case with all auto actions disabled)
I do hope the lag issue is resolved after moving to CM7/Jboogie3 etc
however the battery issue is a major hurdle for now as one day is too less, i probably have to take it to the service center for a checkup and/or claim warranty on battery. till them no flashing for me...
att: patriiice - even when the proximity sensor is not covered, i do experience screen blanks, almost immediately asa the power button is pressed to wake the device.
The lag presented on the Defys running Froyo is a "super nice feature" by Motorola it has an easy fix tho.
Its caused by the VM consuming all memory, all its needed is adjusting the amount of MB the VM should leave free.
There are a few ways to it:
1) Run a terminal emulator, or use GScript Lite to run this:
su
vm.min_free_kbytes=8192
(Not permanent, need to be ran every time you reboot)
2) Get Sysctl from market and do it from there.
3) Get SetVSel and do it from there.
Lag
I have that problem to. The bad thing is that i can`t answer call during the lag, it says i have my phone is closed or i don`t have signal. I`ve installed Temp+CPU and during lag it shows that the proc is running at 100%. Memory has all the time, around 130 min and 230 max. Closed all programs one by one, no change. I restart the phone and everything is running smooth and it lasts max 1 day. i have stock rom 2.2.2. (please excuse my spelling)

I also use 2.2.2 stock and my defy runs without lag... you should consider to root the phone and freeze some unnecessary stock-preinstalled apps like Kindle, Voice command, etc... the ones you will never use. I freezed about 20 apps and there is no lag at all. (I even froze Maps, Streets, SIM toolkit, and some others)

My Defy was lagging until I rooted and installed SetVSel. Now its running as breeze with Stock Indian Froyo.
stock froyo is not good but it shouldn't be that bad. there were some faulty battery issue that i have heard of before too. but in your case your defy might even be faulty. so i would suggest you get it replaced or fixed under warranty first before flashing any custom rom.

with rootunistaller i`ve frozen skype and yahoo and i haven`t had any lag since. If i want 2 use them "defrost" and when i`m finished i just "freeze" back the app

Nope. I was wrong after 3 days of normal proc usage it started again. I`ve installed OS Monitor (free on market) and there was a process the ate all my resources: "DRM Protected Content Storage". Selected watch log and there was something like "enter, delete update, uri: content://media/external/audio/media/1 ../44.... /254..."
This process is searching ur phone for media, video audio and looked like it was stucked at this folder. I`ve searched the phone for that folder but couldn't find it so i just killed the app in OS Monitor. After the process restarted at log was showing "media search finished:182 audio files found and 1 video found". Looks like that's my problem and maybe yours to. Cheers mates
so I might visit the service center this weekend to have my battery life checked.. one day life with all wifi/data/gps disabled and below average voice calls is not acceptable at all.
what is stock recovery?? and will it void my warranty???
thanks a lot guys for ur replies!!
but the thing is my phone has become even slower!!
when i first switch on the phone i have around 240MB free RAM but just after an hour everything becomes too slow, even opening of the menu! and after 2-3 hours of usage it keeps on reducing and finally reaches as low as 40MB .....
what could be causing this??
i have android assistant by which i clear cache, ram still it doesnt help....
Ok, so check this out and tell me if you're experiencing the same:
After fresh reboot:
After a hours/days of usage:
Just took this one on Liquid 1.25 (4.0.4 based)
After reboot
You're looking at "System" RAM usage and its affect on total RAM usage at the top pie graph. Is this normal? It's very annoying because it runs considerably slower after a while, so I check the RAM usage and "System" is taking 4-5 times more RAM than it does after a fresh reboot. I wish I could just kill/restart the service without rebooting the phone. Or better yet; keep it from getting that high in the first place. It causes constant OG Droid-like launcher redraws almost EVERY time I hit the home button, taking at least 5-10 secs for the icons to even start appearing and probably 20+ secs for it to be fully loaded and scrolling to be smooth again (using Apex at the moment because Nova seemed to be worse than that). I wish we could see what the remaining ~300 MBs of RAM were being allocated to too.
As long as I have around 150MB+ free, the phone seems to run great. But that "System" seems to slowly creep up in RAM usage until I have 100MBs or less free, bringing things almost to a halt. I have noticed this across a couple 4.0.3 (shown pics I'm running Codename Android 1.5.0) ROMs and just saw it again for the first time on a 4.0.4-based ROM (Liquid 1.25). I was hoping the update would address this . Also, no amount of killing apps or disabling Google services brings this number back down. The only way I've found to fix it is to reboot, which I find unacceptable. I don't want to reboot my phone multiple times a day to keep it running fast.
TIA for any insight, suggestions or help.
FYI: The app I'm using to display that info is called "SystemPanel" (free and paid version in the Play Store).
Update: Here's a video I made to show what I've found that causes this. If you're running this ROM or have a ROM with a lockscreen like that (as I did with Codename 1.5.0), please see if you can replicate this. It seems that once I enable that octo lockscreen, the memory leak will be permanent after I enable that because I can revert it back to the stock lockscreen and it will still increase System memory usage after ever unlock.
Update 2: I've replicated this on AOKP now using the same lock screen setup. Now you can see me crashing the phone after only locking/unlocking the phone.

Have you compared this to the default tool under 'Settings > Apps > Running'? I've never used that tool before and am not sure where it's getting it's numbers from. But I do know that a high amount of RAM being used is not necessarily a bad thing, since it might just be cached. I would recommend using Elixer 2 for all the stats you'll never need for your phone. When I checked the "android system" process was taking about 100mb
Maybe you should try the stock ROM? I didn’t install the app you noted here, but I also don’t have this crazy 5, 10, 20 second issues that you have after a week of uptime.

Yeah, I've looked at the stock app manager and it showed about the same amount of remaining RAM when it was down to ~100MBs. But right now it's showing about 90MBs less RAM available on SystemPanel as compared to the stock app manager.
Thanks for the Elixer link. I've never heard of that and it seems pretty nice. On Elixer, the RAM usage amount it's displaying matches up exactly with the "Resident" Memory Usage displayed on System Panel (2nd and 4th pics in OP). I'm not sure what the difference between "Resident", "Effective" and "Shared" memory is, but it seems "Effective" is what's actually utilizing the physical RAM on the phone since that's what's being displayed on the main processes/services page in SystemPanel.

Yeah, I'm considering that because I ran my Nexus stock for a few weeks just to make sure my hardware was good (my first stock/unrooted Nexus randomly rebooted periodically in its first week so I exchanged it for my current one) before I started rooting/ROMing the phone and I don't remember ever experiencing anything like this on stock 4.0.2. I definitely didn't have many launcher redraws, if at all. It just sucks going back to stock after being used to all the extra functionality of these other ROMs. I really like having all the status bar customization/widgets, fast charge/LTE toggles and most of all the search and menu buttons on the Navbar.
It's annoying to have to compromise the speed of the device for more functionality. It seems no one else has these same issues, but I do and that's why I'm here trying to figure it out so I don't have to make these compromises if possible.
Thanks for the responses . Any more are very welcomed.
Wow this looks like a problem. I haven't noticed this issue but I'll start paying attention. I use system panel all the time. I can confirm however that my total ram amount never ever gets below 200mb, so I prob don't have this issue.
Bump for help.
first thing i would do is try stock. it's not hard to go back to your rom if you make a backup.
see if the problem resides in the rom itself.
I have the same EXACT problem on 4.0.3 AOKP... its really starting to get annoying i just used the app and found my system is at 300mb!

Use stock. It has been mentioned several times. If it doesn't have issues, then its crappy roms with memory leaks.
If it helps I'm on aokp 29 4.0.4 and haven't seen this bug yet. I keep checking periodically.

So far I don't have signal issues.
I think I may have somewhat figured this out now.
I went into my "Superuser" app to see what apps had root permissions and "system" was among them. So I toggled it to "deny" and rebooted the phone. Upon reboot I got a prompt that "System" was requesting root permissions. I denied that too and left the box unchecked so it will prompt me again if it tries to access root again (to see what actions trigger it later). So far "System" has stayed in the 50-60 MB range for usage, but it's only been a few hours since that reboot. I'll have to monitor it for the next day or so to see if that keeps it down.
I've noticed something since monitoring this "system" usage for the past week too. Once it reaches around the 300 MB spot in RAM usage, it causes my phone to reboot. I've seen it consistently do this 3 times in the past week or two. So there's definitely like a memory leak or something because it slowly but surely increases. Every time I went back to check it after a few mins of usage, it would have raised by at least 1-2 MBs. I don't think I've ever seen it lower in usage. It seems like the more I use my phone, the higher the RAM usage gets for "system".
So could anyone that's reading this thread (that's rooted) check their Superuser app and see if this "system" app is listed and what permissions it has? I'm hoping that I've found out that it's not supposed to have root access. But then that begs the question; what is "system" and why is it requesting root access? If it's a legit service; should it still have root access?
I'm hoping to see that no one else here has it listed in their Superuser app so that I can leave it as it. I just hope it's not something that requires root access and will interfere with the OS at some point if it don't have the permissions it requires.
Thanks for all the help so far!

Yeah, I was thinking that too, but could you please check your running services and Superuser app to see if you see it in there too? That's what I'm trying to see.

Only in system panel.
My apologies. I do under system panel. It looks like the screenshot in the original post. However, it definitely does not have root access.

Good question. I'm on LiquidSmooth 1.25 at the moment though.
I have found that my One X often kills apps I have running when I press the power button and put it away for more than a few minutes. I know Android will try to reclaim resources starting with background apps but this is killing the app I am currently looking at.
I have almost nothing else running and my system normally has 200-300 mb of available memory so it is a very unexpected behaviour. A typical example is I have something like firefox displaying a page. I read a bit then press off. I come back 10 minutes later and it needs to restart and reload the page. With previous phones the app would still be in the foreground the next time I turn it on and unless I navigate away it would stay that way.
I have a nexus s running ICS and that does not happen.
I have a desire running GB and is doesn't hapen.
I have a desire running Froyo and it does not happen.
Is there any way to force a less aggressive memory management on HOX?
There is an option for this, in settings > developer options, furthest down under apps section, first one; "Don't keep activities" check if it is enabled.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
.. also beneath it, there is a restriction "Background process limit", it may also cause immediate kills if "no background process" is set
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
Thanks for the suggestions but those were set normally.
Tried using the built in browser instead of firefox and the problem was significantly reduced. It seems the system has a bias against non google apps. Even so - this HOX is behaving different in this respect to my other phones. It is my expectation as a user that if I am doing one thing, that thing should still be there the next time I look at my phone.
Something on the device may be leaking and the result is this need to stop stuff. My money is on sense ( mainly because of the observed ripple/flicker on the home screen ).
I've noticed same with my new one x it seems over eager killing all apps even sense launcher.
settings are correct but using chrome I don't dear open anything else for fear of it closing chrome and having to log back into everything, sometimes its as bad as just answering call or replying to a text message and its been killed
just as annoying it even kills launcher if I press home after using an app for more than a few minutes I get the please wait spinner while it has to load launcher
had ICS on desire HD and on zoom tab... this is not how it should work can't believe a phone with more memory and designed to run ICS is having to kill everything when DHD runs perfect
annoying little thing that is so far ruining what is otherwise an amazing phone
Seeing the same issue on my One S.
This happens with Dark Meadow. If the screen times out, or you hit the lock button, the game kind of "crashes". Not sure if this is the One X killing it or whether it's how the app is coded.
It's irritating anyway ><
Applications with a notification icon have not this behavior. Is there a possibility to set a higher priority to applications without root?
I'm having the same problem.
With cm9 @ Desire Z, I could, say, restore my 3000 sms within GoSMS (which takes a while) and meanwhile do whatever I wanted with the phone, eg. browsing, texting and so on.
With the H1X, after a certain time, the apps gets killed/suspended and therefore anything that happened within the app - which is pretty annoying. Any solution in sight?
H1X @ ARHD
I get this too. Annoying.

Sense launcher closing is not cos of the over-aggressive app killing. It's cos the system needs more RAM, so closes Sense since it's not directly in use right now. I do notice that some apps are getting closed after a period of inactivity, probably a default ICS setting that we can tweak when kernels and ROMs get more mature releases
I'm suffering from this defect as well. It's frankly astonishing that this phone behaves in this way. Really makes you wonder if anyone actually uses the phones before releasing such junk. What use is such fantastic hardware if it performs so badly in real use conditions. Every time I press home, loading. Try to run some javascript Web pages then go send a text, then back to browser and all tabs have to refresh. Mine is going back if it doesn't get fixed pretty quickly as it's practically unusable in this state. Battery is unsatisfactory as well. 2 hours on battery, screen on for an hour, 57% left?! What are they thinking seriously

If your battery is that bad you have a bad app running rampant or your battery is faulty.
For everyone else, even in settings if "Don't keep activities" is unchecked, try checking it and unchecking it. I read that sometimes it is still set to "Don't keep activities" even if it is unchecked and checking and unchecking it could solve the problem if this is the case. Doesn't hurt to try.
Hopefully one of the devs will make a Rom/kernel with better oom adjustments... I'm hoping.
the multitask implementation on this phone is terrible. I was using runkeeper, stopped to check something in my settings during the ride, phone closed the runkeeper application deleting my ride. It is getting annoying ...
