Hi all,
This is the first time I have been fully satisfied with the trifacta of a stock rom on a device. Speed/performance, stability and battery life.
There are a few nuances thou that makes me want to root and/or install a custom rom.
What are your thoughts on just rooting and/or custom roms?
Things that are an absolute must:
Speed/performance of the Rom (stock is acceptable)
Stability of the Rom (stock is acceptable)
The most important thing for me is battery life and that should be better if not the same.
The rest is gravy.
I look forward to your opinions.

Just remember that unless the ROM is based on the Stock Samsung code, the S-Pen won't work. That is really the only gotcha there.
For now all the customs roms are not so great you'll get the best battery life with the stock rom so stick with it at least for now.

The Android Revolution HD 2.0 with the perseus kernel has given me better battery performance over the stock rom, also it has all the spen functionalities and the stock samsung apps

Have to agree with you there. Really don't see any need for a custom rom when the stock rom is this good. I will wait for the custom rom scene to mature a bit before jumping on that bandwagon!
Thanks for the feedback!
For all of you who are on stock, have you rooted?
I have been using android since the first HTC google phone and have had over 30 phones so far.
I love rooting as it makes some apps of convenience work better with more features, but I feel like once rooted the phone just gets slow over time. Now, I am not sure if this is just because previous versions of android have been like that or it was infact because apps had system level access.
I am just so happy with the stock samsung on the gn2 at the moment that I am sacrificing the benefits of root in order not to loose this smooth, perfect OS with amazing batfery life that I have experienced for the first time ever on an android phone.
Don't get me wrong the custom rom world has been amazing but it always felt like I am upgrading and testing my phone as opposed to using it. While that has been fun in an addictive way, there have been consequences.
For the first time I am using my phone. My girlfriend even made a coment the other day, she said "Wow! This is the longest I have seen you go without resetting your phone". By resetting she meant the wipe, flash and restore process

Hey I'm just wondering I know it's kind of hard to measure without getting into benchmarks score before and after, but have you guys notice a big difference in speed when you guys were stock then going to a custom rom? Just would like to know if there's any incremental speed bump. Just want to know if I should bother rooting and all that stuff because this phone is fast already stock. I'm fully aware of all the cool things rooting does so it's not a question of whether I should root or not but I'm more interested if the phone feels a lot snappier, thank you.

Well that all depends on the rom or kernel itself. There isn't really one custom rom. Lots of different options mate.
Rooting isn't hard. I'd recommend it. I was on stock since August till last month when I got bored and decided to root.

First of all as far as rooting goes there is a big difference between rooted and un-rooted phones.
There are so many excellent apps which require the phone to be rooted or they simply won't work.
Also if you plan to use custom roms your phone must be rooted, all custom roms are pre-rooted.
The custom roms are generally faster than stock roms although to be honest it's not something which
you would really notice when using most applications or games which you may have installed.
The main advantage the custom roms have over stock is that they have a lot more features, settings,
options, themes and they are fine tuned to use less battery power than stock roms.
I would suggest to only flash and use stock based custom roms. (Samsung Galaxy S3 Jellybean v4.1.1 custom roms)
Using other roms like the ported roms or CM/AOKP/AOSP Android roms generally cause more problems
than they are worth, not to mention the fact that none of them have the Wifi calling feature which is only
found in stock based Samsung Galaxy S3 Jellybean v4.1.1 custom roms.
The AOKP/AOSP/CM and ported roms are excellent for those people who like to experiment with their phones.
Good Luck!
Yeah lately getting bored of stock, itching to hack away. All my previous phones needed rooting to actually function right like the g2x. this one has been the first one to worked great stock. Thanks for the info

Question is voodoo supported for this phone? If not other audio enhancements?

Voodoo sound is obsolete but there are many other audio hacks which work even better
like DSP Audio, Awesome Beats, Volume+ and others which all work with our phones.
None of them come with the stock firmware.
Most all of the Samsung Galaxy S3 T999 custom roms will have an option for one of
the above audio enhancements.
Thanks junky

I have to say that CM / AOSP 4.2.2 ROMs are light years smoother than stock touchwiz, but touchwiz scores higher in quadrant because there is proprietary code that Qualcomm gives to OEMs for optimization. AOSP ROMs are open source and thus that secret sauce is not included.

Yeah, that explains the sometimes 1000 pt. difference in the CPU category in quadrant tests (between TW and AOSP). Do you think that "secret sauce" offers any real world advantage? I mean, what does that optimization that Qualcomm is providing to Sammy really do? I also find AOSP 4.2 to be smoother somehow... but the 1000 lower score concerns me.

My Spring Note 2 is currently stock rooted, and I'm thinking of beginning to start downloading and exploring some of the rom's out there. But before doing so, I'm wondering is anyone has any advice a pros and con's of each one, or maybe interested in starting one? Not looking for what the 'best' may be, as that's a personal choice, but more of a feature list, etc of each rom.
I would really like to test the Jedi rom, but unfortunately it is not available for the sprint note 2.
I have use lots of aokp roms as well as touchwiz and my experiences are that aokp roms losses signal a lot % 20 percent of areas I have use cm, carbon, pacman, paranoid, stock aokp and all of them seems to be the same but paranoid and pacman have a bit better signal, now on touchwiz roms you will not see that I recommend macks rom or lab rat rom for me this 2 roms are stable I have try many more but some of them have to much theme. I hope this help you if you have any question let me know as I have try lots of roms Thanks

Or u could do what I do, which theres probably many like me. I am stock rooted well almost I flash many mods from this site or found in other roms so its like building your own rom things such as themes, kernels mods like the bravia engine.

If you want the latest version of android use a AOSP rom. I highly recommend it. Carbon ROM is super fast, smooth and has great features. Good benchmark scores paired with plasma kernel too.

All roms have pros and cons, but only the individual user can make those determinations as all users are different.
Threads like these get closed as the always spiral into arguments about which rom is best, members are expected to do their own research and reading to determine what it is they want.
I've noticed that every ROM I've tried since switching from 4.1/Sense 4 has had small performance issues that I hadn't seen on Sense 4.
One thing that seems to be common with all 4.2+ ROMs (both Sense and AOSP) is that the notification drop-down lags noticeably, especially on the launcher. What could be the cause of this?
Also, I'd appreciate it if you guys could recommend ROMs (preferably AOSP, but Sense works) with good performance. Right now I'm running ViperX with Alex-V's kernel and I find it okay, but still a bit underwhelming.
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk
Hmm for me it's the other way around, sense 5 has better overall performance due to the trimmed down system !
And as far as i can recommend roms.....i just cant, i will not compare roms by it's performance, every rom has it's own unique settings and tweaks. My only advice is to try them out and check which one suits you the best.
Cheers

Fair enough. I've tried about a dozen ROMs so far, and ViperX and AICP seemed to have the best performance.
Strangely enough, I just flashed a stock 4.2 ROM from ARHD to test it out, and this may just be a placebo but it actually seems to run significantly better than ViperX did. That's really strange considering I'd expect the opposite to be true.
Well things should go better when we have the kernel source released to make full tweaked custom sense 5 kernels.
And the difference in performance is different for everyone too.
The rom you mentioned is about full stock, viper is tweaked and has a highly adapted framework with a lot of tweaks. That can be less battery friendly.

Hi,
I've only recently started using different ROM's on my LG G3(852). Thanks to Dene_Bluesman and his custom stock ROM I am a happy camper. But, I keep seeing Cyanogen as being one of the better ROM's out there that is more closely aligned to the AOSP.
Any thoughts over the advantages or disadvantages of using Cyanogen over a stock, albeit custom version, Lollipop ROM?
Battery life? Camera? Stability? Speed?
Thanks for any and all advice.

Thanks,
Are there ROMs that do "work" better?
I barely used CM 13, but is it the cat's meow, so to speak?

Nah in my opinion, most of the AOSP based ones are more or less the same since everyone more or less uses the Cyanogenmod base for G3
LG UI based custom roms are just essentially a jazzed up stock os that essentially offer not that many practical advantages in day to day use

I love cm13 compared to stock. Its way more smooth compared to stock and the phone is either faster or feels faster anyways still a plus. Then there is the great option of themes. I like my phone generally dark so i have my dark theme. Well the camera is is not as cool as stock but it takes decent pictures i can work with that. At the moment it has a couple of bugs but nothing too serious. Once u go cm13 u wont go back unless u use your phone for some HEAVY PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHIC work which i dont and doubt u do.

I am running CM13 Nightlies and loving it. Stable. Fast. Highly customizable. I got the G4 camera app and it works great. Life is fun and open after iOS's closed-down-ness.

Oop. My bad... I was looking for G4 camera. I started using Open Camera and was a bit overwhelmed, but the Cyanogenmod one seems to work very well for me.
Sorry for the false hope. If I find it I will definitely share.
