Well just got upgraded to the SGS II.
Curious if there is anything i should know about the device. I know its beautiful.. and i herd about screen issues but i was holding one and could see anything wrong with the screen...
So Pros, Cons, Quirks, anything you wish you knew off hand?
Depends on what you plan on doing with it ... If you bought for the snazzy voice talk options beware that some roms don't include it and doubletap of the home button to activate it is removed and many roms don't even have voice talk in them .... I got kinda frustrated with that at first ... And just installing the apk wouldnt get it working..... (
with my bluetooth headset ) () to claify that the call button wouldnt activate / open voice talk

not entirely true about voice talk actions. the Samsung one may have been taking out since it sucks anyways. stock android voice commands work better IMO.
I recently switched from the sensation to the Galaxy S2 and im 1000% glad i did, samsung did a amazing job on this device. And TouchWiz is pretty cool and not laggy and slow as sense.
Only con i can even think of is the screen issue with some lines and blotches. My screen personally has the blotches but its really not noticible unless you looking for it in a dark room and with dark lighting but even then its not bothersome at all.
Thanks for the replies. I am excited about this phone. Sucks that it is on back order and will be another week or more till it even ships .

also the actual processor and gpu sucks compared to Exynos used in the real SGS2 variants. I cant even consider TMo's SGS2 a real SGS2. just a little beefier Samsung Hercules.

nothing wrong? its old hardware. i would rather have the better performing Exynos processor than the watered down Snapdragon TMo SGS2. i dont see why Tmobile will sacrifice the main component that made the SGS2 an SGS2 just to claim that the phone supports up to HSPA+ 42mbps....which we will never see those speeds before the SGS3

The processor doesn't suck. It has better browser performance according to anandtech. The problem is that samsung has hardware acceleration for the stock rom on their other variants and not this one. The miui phone apparently blows most phones out of the water with its processor which is the same as this phone. Tons of optimization. All the same games run on both processors without hiccups. Also 42mbs is not the speed it can theoretically go up to that speed.
Realistic speeds are more along the lines 20 down and whatever uplpoad. I seen some people even get 26 down which is basically advertised lte speeds from Verizon. Also when you put both phones on gingerbread lets say cyanogen mod since its optimized you won't see a difference. You only see it on a stock touchwiz rom i doubt you'll see a difference when your on ice cream sandwich as well.

well no one on any network will see those speeds for a while, att uses the same processor for their LTE network, i dont have a problem with speeds where i live , i get 15 meg on a regular basis and spikes up to 20 sometimes. And as far as performance it seems to hold up fine against the other phones. The phone is fine

I don't see what people always say inferior processor. I don't see what my processor can't do that the other processors can. Quadrant scores ,benchmarks, don't matter in real life performance. The exynos processor doesn't give any magical ability to fly or anything.

i dont get it either, and as far as benchmarks even though they really dont matter my scores on the phone stock not rooted out of the box were 200 points better than any review on any website had the other variants at with the exynos.Gotta watch which article you read because it hard to find them that are un-biased .Naturally if they are reviewing a phone for a carrier its gonna be biased towards it. Only way of really reviewing a phone is hands on so you can do it yourself. Some people just care wayyy too much about stuff that dont matter.....i love this phone

that wasnt my point. it was just a waste for tmobile to choose the dual-core snapdragon processor just so they can claim their phone supports up to 42mbps. exynos only supports up to 21mbps which is just fine for real world experience.
yes the processor used in the TMo SGS2 is just fine, but thats just it....its just fine.

the biggest difference between exynos and our dual-core snapdragon is GPU performance. i'm not even going to try to explain the differences myself as its already been said main times. so i will just quote from this article:
In return for this boost in possible data rates, some things are lost with the change over to Snapdragon. Perhaps the most important difference between the Exynos and Snapdragon is the graphics performance. As is the case with all SoCs, these chips have dedicated GPUs. The Qualcomm chip in the T-Mobile Galaxy S runs an Adreno 220, which is a fine component. Exynos, on the other hand, far surpasses it in graphical prowess.
The Exynos is the first mainstream SoC to license and use the ARM Mali-400 GPU. This is a quad-core graphics processor that bests all the other chips in GPU performance. So by going with a Snapdragon, even one clocked up to 1.5GHz, T-Mobile is sacrificing a significant amount of performance.
Straight processing power is also greater on the Exynos chip, but the gap is smaller than for the GPU. Qualcomm still uses its Scorpion core — a core developed to match the Cortex-A8, but Exynos is Cortex-A9. Snapdragon isn’t completely left in the dust because it’s still a solid custom architecture, but a 1.2GHz Exynos will still crunch more bits than a 1.5GHz Snapdragon.
The Snapdragon will offer users one additional benefit in the form of better battery life. The Qualcomm-designed Scorpion to be capable of asynchronous operation, making it possible for an unneeded core to be clocked down independently. This is much better for standby time and low-impact tasks.

Um your point valid we know its an inferior. But still it does what i needs to do you won't actually see the performance difference on the same optimized rom like cyanogenmod or miui. You won't even notice fps difference since their both locked at 60fps. So its fine. The point is its superior as seen on paper and benchmark test but they both work perfectly fine. The exynos doesn't give you wings.
There are no games the both processors can't play smoothly. Tell the truth most apps and everything start up at the same time and speed. So having all that processing power which will be null and void in like a year or two will really matter. A lot of apps and games say not compatible with the samsung galaxy s2 yet. Because of the processor and gpu combo. This is for the original version of the galaxy s2.
If the exynos made me play a game that can only run on that processor then yeah. But it doesn't. It doesn't make anything load faster either.
by the time a game comes out that fully puts a either of those processors to use we will be using another phone with different processors and who cares about games on a phone, just get a ps3,360 or pc for that

You have a warped sense of reason if you think that the difference in performance between the Exynos and the SD3 constitutes your statement: "the actual processor sucks".

you're talking about the sensation. not remotely close to anything equipped with exynos. its easy to claim something without providing concrete proof. you can say your sensation never got past 5mbps in the same areas, but that can depend on a number of things.
1)reception efficiency of the radio
2)tower upgrade timeline in specific areas
3)blowing smoke.

there are no games that both processors cant play smoothly? i guess you played EVERY GAME then right? Here's an example of a game; dungeon defenders.
i'm just waiting for the new-gen of games to come out to really see the limits of this qualcomm dual-core snapdragon. the new-gen games are closer to release dates than you think.
PLUS any mobile processor is pretty much null and void within a year or two. But at least the Exynos has a better chance of holding its ground.

not entirely true. not willing to summarize what i said above. i forgot to add that "Bladeslinger" may be THE game that will show the performance difference between the two.
i care about mobile gaming. its a nice thing to to have when you're away. its fun. plus the only thing i play on console is COD.

All in all. It's your opinion and your view of what fits your needs right? It's not being constructive to give criticism when it only is one sided. I can tell you value the best and fastest in technology. there are ways to express it than to bring everyone down. I could care less about gpu or the type of processor because I have an actual laptop for that. I am happy with the speed and response of this phone. So to downplay things you think are wrong with this phone with cliffnotes and technical theories then you really aren't being constructive.

I played dungeon defenders I'm rooted it doesn't slow down or anything. I don't see your point. BladeSlinger is for all android devices.... Not to mention ShadowGun looks exactly like it in quality and i can play that on my device as well smoothly. Bladeslinger also pauses in the middle of gameplay to do a special move. Shadowgun enemies are always shooting at you.
Chainfire prove before that all you need is simple plugins to run the tega2 only games or qualcomm only games on any device. What makes you think it will be so different in the future. No one will be using the same exynos next year majority of ppl will sell of the galaxy s2 or the galaxy s3. It will be the same with the Qualcomm processor for the new krait or the new tegra3 processor. I can play dungeon defenders on mytouch 4g with its single core processor on miui. So what?
Hi,
I am planning to swap my Note 2 and GFs S3 with either Xperia T or Nexus 4
Nexus is the best when it comes to gaming with its superb GPU but it has its own problems like performance drops due to heating, cracking class, relatively worse screen, lack of SD card slot etc.
So I am firstly thinking of Sony devices as they have almost zero manufacturing defects unlike cracking, heating LG or burn-in suffering and eMMc frying Samsung
I use the CPU at 1200 Mhz since it is not necessary for todays needings. But GPU is important for future games and I am afraid our mali 400 is outdated.
When we compare 3 GPUs with GLBenchmark Adreno 320 wins all rounds but things are complicated between Adreno 225 and mali 400.
Mali 400 is not exceeding 19FPS (normally 17) no matter how much i OC or what resolution I choose on the Egypt 2.5 test. Adreno 225 scores 22-23 FPS on 720p without OCing.
Things change when we compare older 2.1 Egytp test. With Xperia T on both onscreen or offscreen scores goes pretty low behind Note 2.
It gets more interesting when I run Egytp 2.5 with 4xAA. Note 2 barely gets effected from it and it still gives the 17FPS. Apperiently the part which makes the AA is not where Mali 400 is bottle necked. On the other hand Adreno 225 gets slower on the AA side and gets 16FPS.
I understand that the Adreno is newer so is Egytp 2.5 test. But which one should i take into account for the future gaming?
And more importantly should I make the swap?
Thanks for reading.
Honestly speaking I doubt it will make much noticeable difference with games for this year. It has managed to run smoothly at every game I've thrown at my note 2. I think its best if you stick with your note and your gf S3 for the time being. Its funny tho I got my wife an S3 and myself the Note 2. She got envious until she used my phone with one hand and dropped it twice, since then she's quite happy sticking with her S3.-_-

Hey dude..i will tell.you my own experience:
Last year i boughy my first Android Device which was Sony Xperia S...it was the..no 1 at high end devices...it beated every phone.
It has a snapdragon.S4 1.5 ghz dual core.
Adreno.320 gpu.
Honestly at stock ...and even after rooting and overclocking....nothing run smoother then it was already.
But i put it in his box because these high end specs..didnt give the phone enough juice the whole day just using it for chatting.
Then i saw the new note 2..woow..the biggest point that i bought my note 2 was..the battery at first...and the big screen..and the secs.
I bought every high end game on the market..Asphalt 7..finished..moderm combat 4..at 2nd level playing...nova 3 finished..and my loved first fps game shadowgun...i also installed back stap hd...and gt racing..max payne ..gta 3 and vice city....believe me not for a second the games hanged anywhere...they where soo smooth and without lags.
Your note 2 will last you at least 2 more years for high end games.
It is the best phone on the market.
Best regards.

The primary differences are the screen & the S-Pen.
720 vs 1080 => G PRO
Pen => Note II
Everything else is subjective; too close to call.
Highly capable quad-core processors, screen (phone) size is 5.5", µSD card slot in both devices and removable battery in both - battery capacity is 3100 (Note) vs 3140 (G Pro).
Standard eMMC storage: G Pro is listed as 32GB vs. 16GB for the Note II
If the 32GB G Pro comes in at the same cost as the 16GB Note II, then the G Pro edges out the Note (in my book).
Here, this small comparison from Phone Arena should help.

You are comparing a GPU to a CPU. Our CPU (APQ8064) kicks the 4412's ass, but our GPU is about equivalent. Our CPU is more efficient and theoretically faster than the Exynos due to a newer ARM architecture base and other Qualcomm optimizations.
I have both Note2 and E975.(No G pro of course)
If you want a phone with 5.5 inch screen, I think you should treat it as a memo or notebook, not a regular phone.
So S-Pen is a very essential part of this kind of usage(memo and notebook).
I am going to sell out my Note2 because it's not very convenient for daily use.(too big to handle with one hand)
I think I will not apply any phone with screen bigger than 4.8/5.0 inch in the future.
E975 is perfect for me, both in performance and look and size~
So, please consider usage of your phone before you buy one of these big devices.

No, you've mistaken. Go in this thread, catch GPU mark, fire it on both 4412 and adreno 320 and post your results 2 compare. You'll see that 320 is twice faster than your Mali 400.
You simply look into old benchmarks results if you think our GPUs are equivalent

2D? What's that? The most irrelevant spec to bench in the first place. When your 2d rendering speed is slow and not enough? And probably Exynos is faster in 2d cause it renders 2d at full throttle while Qualcomm only work on slow speed like 384Mhz or something. Just probably

I believe he was only talking benchmark wise, not real situation. However, 2D is also important. since your launcher run in 2d. You are also mixing CPU and GPU speed.
Hi. I have purchased 8.4" tab pro. Love it. It has good natural screen and is fast. But then I saw online the tab s. Is the screen worth the extra money and is the battery life much better? I am also concerned of the small bezels. Where should I hold it without touching the screen
In my opinion (which I'm quite fond of) the Tab S is worth the extra money.
If I already had a Tab Pro 8.4 that would be hard to say.
The bezels are slightly (mm's) slimmer on the Tab S from Tab Pro. If you were fine with the Tab Pro you shouldn't be a lot worse off with the Tab S.
I just returned my Tab Pro and picked up the Tab S. I recommend the 10.5 model just because you can read websites in portrait easier.
I was worried the amoled screen would be too much but it's great and I love the blacker text.

So did I. Went from 8.4 pro to the 10.5 S. So far I am very happy that I did.
The Tab Pro 8.4" is a quadcore, whereas the Tab S 8.4 is a octacore. So Tab S in this case would be far superior, plus the ultra power saving mode, finger print lock, and Super AMOLED screen is way better too on the "S" series for the 8.4" Tab comparisons.

Debatable which processor is faster. Really depends on what you're doing with it. I had a chance to see them both side by side and the SAMOLED screen on the Tab S looked better to my eye, but again that's subjective. IMHO, it comes down to price. They were running the Tab Pro 8.4 for $249 last week. At that price, the Tab S just isn't worth it. That said, I walked out today with a Tab S that was a return from a customer who got the wrong color. Box was unopened, but the guy gave me a decent discount because there was a big sticker that had been ripped off the side of it. Box looked pretty rough, but the contents were untouched.

It's not superior I wish they'd put the snap 801 instead of the exynos chip as only four cores can work at a time. Unless they can find a way to unlock. Plus it may take longer to root or get custom roms. I had the tab pro and a root was out in a couple of days.
My one knock on these super amoled screens
Reds tend to look a bit orangish.

Wrong
All 8 cores can work simultaneously.

I read the anandtech review it sounds there like it's only 4 at a time though the wording is confusing...
http://www.anandtech.com/show/8197/samsung-galaxy-tab-s-review-105-84inch/4
The WiFi only variants of the Galaxy Tab S all feature Samsung’s own Exynos 5 Octa (5420). Internally we’re dealing with four ARM Cortex A15s and four ARM Cortex A7s in a big.LITTLE configuration, with a maximum of four cores of the same type being active at any given moment. The Cortex A7 cluster can run at up to 1.3GHz while the Cortex A15 cluster maxes out at 1.9GHz.

it won't be the first time anandtech made a major error. I've caught a few gaffes over the years. Since then, I don't trust their reviews. I treat it like going to a doctor. You get a diagnosis but always go to several other physicians for a more informed opinion.

I was under the assumption that the Exynos 5420 didn't have HMP enabled. Samsung released a vague statement in the past saying that they could update the kernel on devices running the 5420 so that HMP works, but I'm not sure if anything came from it. Of course, I could be totally wrong and Samsung got HMP working on these devices.
According to an Anandtech article (I know, sorry) on the newer 5422 processor back in February:
"The 5422 supports HMP (Heterogeneous Multi-Processing), and Samsung LSI tells us that unlike the 5420 we may actually see this one used with HMP enabled. HMP refers to the ability for the OS to use and schedule threads on all 8 cores at the same time, putting those threads with low performance requirements on the little cores and high performance threads on the big cores."
"Assume nothing and Check Everything "
It's enabled on their flagship device..

Any links to back that up? Everything I read says no 5420 has HMP turned on and that the Tab S only uses one set or the other depending on performance needs, never both together.

Hmm, you're right. I really should've checked more sources. One minute Google research doesn't get you really far. In that same article Anandtech's chart lists the max number of active cores for the 5420 as: 4 (?) .
Do what I did. Speak to technical support at Samsung.
I'll go one step further. What we do know is that the 5420 in the Tab S is scoring 35,000+ in Antutu...
It seems that our Note 2014 versions usually score about 32,000+, So that lead me to suspect that the newer Galaxy Tab S 5420 was HMP enabled due to the higher Antutu scores.*
And again, had confirmed when I spoke with Samsung directly.

My note pro 8.4 with snapdragon 800 scores 35000 as well, I wouldn't call that proof on HMP. When you read the specs for the 5422 they state first chipset with HMP. Color me dubious that it's been turned on for the 5420. I hope I'm wrong
You're comparing apples to oranges. We have an AMOLED screen using the Exynos Octa 5. The Snapdragon on an inferiorly smaller screen (without AMOLED) will naturally get better CPU/GPU scores on Antutu

The Pro 8.4 has the same resolution8.4 1600 x 2560 display) minus the amoled, and 1gb less RAM, same Android version.
I do agree any Antutu score is meaningless to prove HMP or not.

You left out the smaller screen. Apples and Oranges.
Hi, I have a question, I have my htc one m9 for 4 days and I am delighted, previously had a samsung galaxy s6, I play emulator pspp, without configure anything in s6 going super-fluid though the m9 will jerks and low frames, some kernel or something there to set up this emulator? in theory the Adreno 430 m9 is at the height of the s6 mali, greetings and thanks
someone knows something? greetings and thank you
As we know the adreno 430 must outperform the mali t760 in every single are , but in real life your test is best answer if you have them both.

Ok, thanks for the answer, then the Adreno 430 is the power level of the exynos mali?
u can actually found answer on google, i saw the answer like this
1.) point out that Adreno430 wins only in term of ultra heavy load, and not to high load and normal load
2.) for emulator ppsspp, mali t760 mp8 win, as someone also tell you that, this is what real life performance not only benchmark. bench mark tell most of the thing but u also need to have some basic knowledge about it.
hope u google out your answer ;D
The One M9 has a throttling issue which reduces the clock speed of A57 cluster to something lower than 1.6GHz. Newer revisions of the SD810 SoC (like in Xperia Z5) don't have this problem.
PPSSPP's big lag issue with Snapdragons SoCs hasn't been fixed yet, check out their forums to know what I mean.

AFAIK the SD is superior in most tasks minus throttling. However the difference isn't huge and certainly doesn't merit a change of devices, both will be capable of handling emulation provided it's been optimized by the emulator, some will be terrible, plus it depends on how the emu works with the SD, so a comparison is difficult to make.
Install a different kernel and tweak the settings so it doesn't throttle so much.
