I am losing my mind with my GPS. I have had my TP2 since last August and I have never been able to find a solution to the horrible GPS quality. I have tried matching up the ports, changing the ports, different software, hard-resets, I have installed the hotfix, I have called HTC, but things are still terrible. The only thing that ever cause an improvement was manually choosing the ports and such, however the improvement was only slight.
I have used GPS on Google Maps on the iPhone under the same provider (Optus in Australia) and the moment I opened the program there was always a GPS lock, not once did I ever have to wait or get it ready, but on my TP2 using Google Maps (or any other application), sometimes I am forced to wait minutes before getting a signal, if at all. I have searched and searched for a resolution but im not finding any. I just don't understand what I paid top dollar for, I chose the TP2 over the Xperia for it's GPS capabilities, but its hardly capable. I feel as if I am out of options, i've had it for too long to get my money back; I would really appreciate your thoughts on this?
I use iGuidance2009 and have no problems, though I do update quickGPS regularly. Google Maps I dont know about as I dont use it.
This has been a problem ever since the Touch Pro. My old Kaiser never had these horrible GPS issues, Touch Pro and Touch Pro 2 do.
What I have found to work well is to toggle the phone in the Comm manager when GPS is not working correctly.
Also, if you can get AGPS to work correctly, that does wonders for GPS lock time speeds! It would take minutes before, but once AGPS is set to work correctly, I can get a lock in 10 seconds! You have to go into the registry and make sure AGPS is set to use the right data connection.
This only improves acquisition times, it does not reduce the lag which was introduced in the original Touch Pro.
Google maps is probably the worst test app for speed. I use TomTom and iGo on Juicy R5 now, default rom before, and both have no lag. Google maps lags as much as 30 seconds, Garmin and also a few free gps apps I tried lagged 10-15 secs. So this is really, really app dependent. Don't know why.
As for lock speed, agps is a must. If QuickGPS/SEASGEE isn't working then you get the same lock speeds that you would get on old, old car gps systems (up to 5 mins to get a lock).

It's just you with such serious problems, maybe your phone has problems..
AGPS is key to getting a fast lock. That's where you should be focused.
Some registry tweaks may improve your fix. It rocks for me and others owners, but not sure for every body.

No, its not. Everyone has position lag. It isn't unbearable, but it is pretty annoying. You take an exit on a highway and it takes about 3 seconds to realize you took it sometimes. What is really weird is it keeps going on one road while the arrow turns in the direction you are headed until it finally places you on the correct road. That part may be due to TomTom though, but I'm not sure.

As per my personal experience, this is due to internal GPS data filtering by WM, so tweaks recalled by woaloo (I mean reducing of WM's GPS-related data buffer sizes) can help here.
Be careful however with it as too low values will drives GPS to become "nervous" - your position will become unstable, starting to jump randomly with a radius of few hundreds meters.
Another reason of the lag is (most likely) related to the navi software one uses. I use iGO8 and there are for sure settings moderating position behavior from pretty quick (but unstable) to rather slow but noticeable more stable. I personally prefer this last one.
To the original poster, have you tried running a program like VisualGPS? If so, how much signal strength is it showing for the satellites? I see as high as 39 when indoors. I get quick and accurate locks and I am very happy with the GPS performance. I have to believe that you have a hardware problem.
As for the thread drift on the few seconds delay, yes, that is there, but not a big issue.
Personal experience with the GPS... initially could never get it to connect, basically because every time i tried i was inside behind venitian blinds..... never use GPS before so my bad.
Walked outside and it was great. About 10 secs or less to lock, the lag is only a couple of seconds, no more than 5 secs. Added the tweeks and it was improved slightly. The accuracy was within 5 meters or less (used the property boundries in google maps to verify).
Moving at high speed it was pretty good too.
Compared to other phones and iPhone borrowed from a mate there is negligable difference in the accuracy and lag.
BRETT
So the GPS performance on the Touch Pro 2 is not that much better than the Touch Pro? The receiver on the Touch Pro is extremely weak.
At my work we have a GPS re-radiator for use with the equipment that we build. Indoors using the re-radiator I can get a lock in seconds with 11 satellites (the signal is abnormally strong). Outdoors, I'm happy if I can get a lock with 7.

I did try something like that, not sure if it was VisualGPS but it showed me the strength of GPS signal and it was quite accurate with how the GPS appeared to be behaving.
I got the phone's motherboard replaced and that fixed the issue. Thank you all for the replies though, it was possibly faulty.
Have the new Energy rom on but used the GPS hotfix. Seems to have increased lock time considerably.
I'll keep an eye on it though in case the lock time increases...
Wonder if we can find an app that would imbed GPS co-ordinates in any pics we take... Got a Samsung S8300t as well & it does this though the GPS navigation software is non-existant....

One of the extra camera modes you can unlock in the TP2 is a geotagging mode that does exactly that. There's a number of ways to enable them...Rhodium Settings Tool has a switch for each of them individually (burst, sport, video share, and geotagging), or you can just run the cab below
....and, for anybody else on this thread who hasn't tried it already, I'd suggest checking out the cab fone_fanatic put together to help with GPS locks on the TP2, details HERE
Hi all, this is my first post and I'm a n00b to rooting, but don't let that stop you from reading on since I'm an advanced user and hope I can add some value here. Honestly, don't know what took me so long to do this. Posting to the Q&A forum since I can't yet post to the RC1 Dev forum.
My main goals for rooting were to get out from under Sprint's downgrade of my Swype beta (I should never have installed that OTA update, duh), upgrade to GB, and get better performance (battery especially).
I tried lots of the GB ROMs so far and experienced some of the reported problems like cycling reboots, slow/non-responsive market, CM skate anim cycling, etc. Some ROMs had swype, some didn't and most produced the licensing issue discussed in these forums when trying to install the latest beta.
Long story short, I've found a very stable and fast performing combo that I thought I'd share, and ask a question about. Here's what I did:
In recovery, Format_all, wipe data, system, cache, dalvik.
Install RC1, install the latest GB google apps and restart.
3G performance was piss poor, and I want wimax (more Geeees!), so I installed the toast wimax kernel (and antipasto font which I'm loving), cleared caches again, restarted and now 3G performance was faster than I think it has ever been. [EDIT: WiFi now an issue] and GPS are fast and stable. Best part, I was able to download and install the very latest Swype beta on this ROM.
A couple things that need addressing though:
'Cell standby' is a somewhat high percentage battery drain which I'll try to tackle through other reported methods (could be wimax searching/standby?). That said, battery life is still very good and way better than sprint/sense, even under heavy/constant use.
USB issues: Enable USB debugging and notify. Icon shows in notification bar. Disable debugging, but leave notify checked. Debugging icon still shows. Tied to this is the inability to select the mount/charge options, which others have recently reported in the RC1 Dev forum. So can't mount to PC. Any updates on how to resolve?
WiFi is now non-functional on my office AP.
WiMax control settings not showing up since they aren't there with this ROM/kernel combo for some reason. Any/all ideas welcome on this point too.
Slow market downloads, even though speedtest shows 527kbps down.
Thanks again everyone for this great community!
I haven't had any luck with my phone on my office AP (3COM) since I got this darn phone. For some odd reason it gets the wrong gateway and I have to set it up manually from the terminal if I want to use it after connecting. Check your gateway when you connect and see what you are getting.

WiMax isn't in RC1 yet. You can get an alpha build that Shinzul has up. Or wait until the Final release which should have WiMax and HDMI working.
Thanks, I'll check the gateway, and will check out Shinzul's alpha.
Had my first auto reboot today, and Sms is not working right (yes, less than 160 chars and not mms). Might have spoken too soon about this combo...

Keep in mind that the "Percentages" will always total a 100%. Something will always be big.
So to me I WANT TO See Cell Standby be high. That means nothing stupid in the OS is chewing it up. And Cell Standby isn't effected all that much except the Radio Firmware (and settings) !! So be careful what you wish for.
The problem for me is, on sense you can uncheck radio always on to remove that cell standby huge drain. On froyo you can use juice defender. But on cm7 you can do neither. So I need to turn it on and off manually. Very annoying, anybody have a solution?
If you install CM7 nightly build #6 (today's build), it now has support for WiMax and SMS splitting.
juice defender is failing me. and i reeeeeallly hate turning data on and off manually. any suggestions? i'm new to aosp so i'm a bit lost rigt now.
Just use the expanded notification bar and toggle data. You're not gonna be able to shut off the radio without airplane mode.

Unfortunately I think some permissions changed within Android 2.3 which CM7 uses and JuiceDefender just doesn't work on it yet. You're only other option is to flash CM6 (Android 2.2) if you must have JuiceDefender working in ASOP.

ya it looks like thats the case. sucks cause it is taking a really high toll on my battery. i hope somebody will put it into one of the next builds soon.
Continuing from my OP, I'm now off RC1 and onto Nightly #12 with WiMax. WiMax when on is a huge battery drain and I'll be doing some post-reading to figure out if someone has found a way to set a WiMax antenna polling frequency so that it can sleep for periods when not connected.
That said, the WiMax is nice and fast...so I only enable it with the notification bar widget when I need speed or talk/data simultaneously. I also use a new version of Setting Profiles (Full version) to toggle the Wimax on/off based on where I am -- note that this is a test version sent to me by the developers as I've been helping them test this feature. So I don't know if it's in the latest market release version, but if you are a paid owner of that app, just email them and ask for it (although the updated market release is likely not far off if it's not out already).
With the XDA-sponsored SetCPU on and no WiMax, I'm actually getting great standby times in the double-digit number of hours, which has been a first for me with this phone! I know there are some great posts out there about manual conditioning of the battery, which I'm eager to try, and other useful battery-related posts.
I am running CM7 RC1 and I have to say I love it. The first couple of days after flashing I was experiencing terrible battery life. I mean 5 hours or less. I finally flashed Savage-Zen kernel and used the "smartass: governor in CM settings. My battery was better, but Cell Standby was still draining all the battery. I wiped the dalvik cache again and it helped some. but I think the best thing I did was disable google backup settings. Keep in mind before I flashed the kernel and battery life was horrible I wasnt using it heavily, WiFi was off completely, I toggled mobile data on and off as needed, and didnt let anything except for weather autosync. I had maybe 10 applications as well. Once I flashed Savage-zen, used smartass, and disabled Backup data to google servers. MY battery lasts over 2 days with moderate usage with mobile data always on and gmail and weather auto synced.
As far as bug-wise, the only thing I have experienced so far is sometimes there is a slight delay when unlocking the phone and getting the lockscreen to show. Sometimes when the button is pressed to unlock, the bottom touch buttons light up, but the lockscreen takes like 5 seconds to appear.
One more thing is the GPS icon stays in the notification area once it has been turned on and back off.
All in all I can say now that I have amazing battery life, I love CM7 and will not use anything else besides CM7. I cannot wait until the stable release is out. GO CyanogenMod Team!
so I flashed the Nexus Rom as well as the newly updated 3.8 version with the battery % feature flashed on my phone. The entire procedure was done as instructed (restore/clear 3+ times on everything as instructed) and I waited well over 10 minutes upon a reboot. So all is set and almost everything is working flawlessly.
There are few issues, however, which I'm curious to know if I'm the only one experiencing this:
1. Battery Drain: Fully Charged at 100%, unplugged the cable at 6AM this morning. The phone has been on its battery power for roughly 7.5 hours now handling a total of 5 minutes of calls, roughly 30 text messages, 5 minutes of non-wifi internet usage, email is being pushed, and flashed 3.8. My display is set slightly below the mid section and I have zero widgets on my main screen except for the search bar. A total of 6 icons on my menu and that's it (only 1 page). My battery is at 40% right now. It's only been a day since I've had this flash and I just flashed on the 3.8 just few minutes ago.
2. From the Status Bar pull down menu, Shutdown and Reboot, Recovery option would hang and freeze the phone until I pull out the battery. I can only enter the Recovery mode manually by holding both +/- volume, power on, and releasing both once the 'samsung' logo appears.
3. Mobile HotSpot freezes for good 1-2 minutes. I cannot use my phone as a Hotspot at the moment.
I absolutely love the Nexus Rom from the looks, performance, looks to looks, but few of the glitches I've mentioned are quite irritating. If I'm the only person experiencing this, I'd want to continue on the search to remedy this issue. Please share some experience, ideas, or resolution if you have any!
1.) That's about right for battery. It's a leak so the battery life is still wanting compared to gb. If you thinks that's bad though, you should have seen uclc4
2.) Known bug. Even though its ucld2 the shutdown bug is still present for a few, and especially manifests itself as soon as you run fix permissions. Although the shutdown hang is "reportedly fixed" on ucld2 i'm running seanscreamz sky ics 4.2D-8 with ucld2 base and i have the same problem as well.
Suggestions, either use quickboot from google play, or reflash following op instructions and DO NOT fix permissions
3.) Hotspot doesn't really work all that well, even with the ultracfg fix. I recommend the "WiFi Tether 3.1-beta12" app, i'm using this instead and it works well.

Thanks for the input. I wish the battery life was better. I'll let it sink in for a few days to see if it'll improve. If not, I'll just have to keep searching for a rom with a better battery life. I've tried Beastmod, Juggnaut and many others which have yet to last for over 12 hours.
I read that the hotspot issue was fixed and with the 3.8 update, I presumed it to be completely polished. The shutdown bug, I can live with - hoping there's an upcoming fix in the works.
This ROM is the sickest looking ROM I've tried so far. I wouldn't call it the smoothest due to it's intermittent force closures and freezes, but when things improve down the road, I think this one will stay on my phone for awhile!
I've been using this rom for about a week and the battery has been working great, better than any stock rom I've had. I'll unplug it in the morning around 745 and it'll last until I go to bed around 11.

You should try Mr X' s tweaked Telus stock ROM. This ROM has the best battery life among T989 ROMs period. It is Canadian but works great on T-mobile network. It also does not have much bloatwares as T mobiles stock one. Just Make sure you have wifi sharing, wifi sharing manager and social hub frozen through titanium backup.
As for wireless hotspot, the stock one from Telus works well.
I get about 16 hours use. It may vary for you but battery lasts longest with this ROM.

So today I've installed latest MaximusHD rom for HTC One X, and everything is super fine, except for one thing - when I'm trying to connect to my Skydrive (using official app) while on Wi-Fi I just can't do it. After awhile it just says that I should check if I have a connection. The problem does not occur when I switch to Data Transmission. Other apps usually are able to connect but it seems slower than when using Data Transmision.
I have installed the WiFi update, and when using Google Play, or browsing the internet it seems to work just fine... I also switched from Superuser to SuperSU, but the problem occured before that so I don't think it had anything to do with that (noob question - which should I use? Superuser was there by default, but is ist actually better, or there is no big difference?)
Have you tried uninstalling and then reinstalling the app?

I tried, it's still very slow.
Other odd thing is that when I turn on Data Transmission it's always showing the "H" symbol, even in the places where it previously showed "3G" or "3.5G", now it never switches. What does it mean? The speed seems fine though.
This happened to me too. And it's happening to YouTube and google play.
Could it be because I didn't do the OTA update?
In that case i have a little question: if I update the OTA do I/will it wipe all data?

Well I did the OTA update almost right away (after intalling few apps), and I saw the problem after that, so I don't think it has anything to do with that although it's suppose to fix WiFi. Oh and it didn't wipe my data.
EDIT:
Well I can't post in MaximusHD thread yet so I'll ask here, does everyone using this rom experience such a tremendous drop in battery life when using Data Transmission? On WiFi it's normal, but when using cellular it drains 5-10% in 10 minutes... That seems absurd.
bump. Seriously? Anyone knows if this problem with power drain when using cellular data transmission is also present in other clean Sense 5 Roms? Or is there a way to fix that, or maybe there is an update underway?
I just switched ROMs but was getting a full days use out of a charge. WiFi at work and home all day. So I never really used hspda.

Yes! It does this for me too. It seems to drain at something like 1% per minute for me when I have mobile data on. Wifi also drains it quickly, but not as fast. I posted about this in the Maximus thread (some other issues too) but nobody has replied. Good to know it's not just me.

Yep, hopefully there is going to be some kind of fix, I really wouldn't like to go through the whole configuration, app instalation, etc. process again.
Ok, so another thing is - some icons in one of the folders on my home screen disapear. It's always in the same folder, and only in this one, others seem to be unaffected.

Issues I'm having:
1. Crazy battery drain when I enable wifi, but particularly bad when I enable mobile data. I have a Tasker profile where if I enable wifi and connect to my home network, autosync and GPS are enabled for 2 minutes then disable themselves. Last night my phone was on 61%, I enabled wifi, and immediately it dropped to 56%.
2. When I go to bed at night I turn my phone off. If I put it on charge at night it gets to a certain point and the phone switches itself on! One night last week it switched itself on at about 89%, so I switched it off again, and about ten minutes later it switched itself on again!
3. I use Google Calendar, not the HTC one. I seem to be unable to disable the HTC calendar - the only option is to "freeze" it in my backup app.
Aside from these things, I really like the rom, but these three issues are making me wonder if I should try something like ARHD and see if the same things are present there.

Well I don't know how it is with the phone turning itself on, because I'm not turning it off to begin with.
The thing with calendar - it seems to me it was also like that when using official Sense 4+, so I don't know if it's fixable.
I think I'm going to switch to ViperX Sense 5 Rom, people seem to say good things about battery life in this one.

Yes, I know some people think the idea of switching a phone off is somehow weird, but I turn mine off at night. As an experiment I just switched my phone off here in work, plugged it in to charge it (it was on about 93% - charged overnight and it has lost 7% since I switched it on when I got up for work at 5.30) and lo and behold it powered itself on when it reached 100%. I don't want this to happen.
The calendar on Sense 4 could be disabled - I know this as I had it disabled! I prefer the Google calendar, so I disabled the HTC one. On this ROM you can only hide it, or backup apps allow it to be frozen, which is what I've had to resort to.

Well then since nobody seems to know what to do in our instance, and I have no idea if there is some kind of update for MaximusHD underway, we propably will have to switch the Roms. I usually had the mobile Data Transmission turned on all the time when outside my apartment and while it did drain the battery more than WiFi it still was enough for 8+ hours of being on with medium usage (sometimes with battery saver option ticked when I needed to be outside for a longer period of time). Now the phone would be dead after few hours.
EDIT:
Today I switched for ViperX Rom, and all of the issues I wrote about seem to be gone, Skydrive app no longer has any issues with connecting. Although I'll say something more about batery life in 2-3 days when I'll actually have a chance to see how it works. In general I can say that this ROM is a lot more customizable, and has lots of tweaks (greeat ones) I haven't seen in Maximus, but still I'll wait for a few days with my final opinion.
Ok so after using it for a few days I can tell that the ROM itself is just better in sheer terms of funcionality. First thing I noticed is that I can now put more than 16 shortcuts into Folders, the icon grid in app panel is 5x6 so now I have 3 pages to scroll instead of 7. WiFi seems work more stable but I can't say that it worked bad in MaximusHD. When it comes to battery drain while using Data Transmission - it's still there, but after a few cycles of charging it seems to get better bit by bit, if it still changes I'll let You know. ROM comes with lots of additional tools, and allows heavy customization, and reclocking the processor for better battery life. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. I don't know what about the phone turning itself on, because I don't switch it off. In terms of the callendar I also use gogle one and I just turned of sync options in the one provided by htc. Also I'm not sure if while installing the rom You are able to choose not to install the HTC callendar.

I've gone back to my old Orange-branded 4.1.1 / Sense 4+ build. Battery life has gone through the roof, HTC calendar is disabled, everything works, no problems. As for the phone powering itself on, well, something odd happened there...
When I decided to go back to the old build I restored my Nandroid backup and reflashed my old boot.img, taking the phone back to its old setup, and all seemed well, but that night I switched it off at bedtime (still find it weird that so many people think I'm freakishly odd for daring to switch my phone off from time to time) and lo and behold, some time later, it switched itself on again! The next morning I did some searching about removing the Clockworkmod recovery, followed the instructions, and also relocked my bootloader for good measure, and guess what? Since then it hasn't powered itself on while charging. So all I can gather from this is it was either Clockworkmod or having an unlocked bootloader that caused my phone to power itself on, because as soon as these two things were changed it has behaved normally.
So anyway, I'm going to stay on this build until Orange get around to releasing 4.2, or my contract expires in April, whichever comes first. Probably the latter, as according to a post I've seen from Orange themselves they reckon the update will appear 3-6 MONTHS after the manufacturer releases it.

Heh I'm alson in Orange (poland), and we got info that the update will show up sometime mid-december. I just got tired of waiting for them to update that's why I ended up with custom roms.
Maybe it was CM fault? I'm using TWRP, tonight I'll turn it off and see if it powers back itself during the night and let you know.
So weird Issue.
Using Google Maps on MaximusHD 6 with the latest t-mo firmware (2.11) I get constant "GPS SIGNAL LOST" when obviously driving and using it as my nav since I got it. I'm in southern California with a pretty good LTE signal almost everywhere. The highways are pretty open so trees, mountains, buildings etc are ruled out as a probable cost.
Now today I noticed that I normally keep the phone locked/screen off when driving since it's connected over BT so there's no real need to look at it. During a normal 15-20min drive I would get the signal lost alert a lot. Upwards of 10 or so times on that single drive. While with my M8 it never happened especially when literally not 5min after getting out of the parking lot doing maybe 20mph down the street. I first I thought i messed something up since I took the phone apart to apply thermal paste to keep it from overheating.
However today on a drive back I kept the phone with the screen on. Never did it lose signal while the screen was on, but a minute after I locked the phone (screen off) did it lose GPS signal. I turned it back on and after driving 20min or so the signal wasn't lost.
So overall has anyone experience a similar issue? Full cellular coverage with frequent google maps alerts that the GPS signal was lost. Maybe a background gps process being killed or another coming up and hindering it.
Gonna wait for the Thanksgiving break to mess around with stock/custom roms and see if it's just something that can be fixed with a reflash.
I'm having the same issue, have you figured anything out? Have you tried using a different app besides google maps to see if it's the actual app doing it's power save feature, or the background powersaving process being started by the phone being screen off? Really interested because my phone starts burning up to extreme temps...
On the backup I had with the issue I narrowed It down to possibly a background process cutting it off once the screen turns back. Power saving was off and all that would stick while screen was off was maps, Google service, and social apps.
As for the cause I couldn't figure it out. I went with a stock from without issues. Then went back to custom roms and haven't had the issue again. Also I drastically lowered my app count. Barely use any apps not needed for basic functionality.
As for the temp issue you're having. I noticed gets warm just like any other device when using GPS. I have opened up the phone and applied a new thermal coat following off a thread around here.
I have another issue came up where the phone would seek out a GPS signal while battery saving was selected to even location turned off. Killed my battery in a heart beat. Hasn't happened again.
I would suggest you make a full backup and either flash a stock rom or redownload whatever custom rom your using. Do a trial run for a day or two with minimal apps and see if it improves.
Here's where it gets interesting..
I used to own a galaxy s3 i9300 and custom kernels caused exactly the same issue. Flashing a stock rom solved it and a few other issues, one in particular was gps inaccurate coordinates.
Now I have moved to an m9. This has in the past run great. It is completely stock and untouched by curious fingers.. However, recently my gps has been running at random intervals even though it is completely off in all accessable settings. I can't find the culprit and it sapped 40% in a few minutes. It was literally a short face to face conversation, jumped back in the car and went for my phone for waze.. Dead as a dodo..
Confuzzled completely as to whether this is the actual rom doing it or an app..
I wish I stole my HTC M9.

Android 6 should be released around here soon so maybe that'll improve/fix these issues. I wouldn't be surprised if Google services is causing this since it has in the past drained batteries and causes similar issues. If the kernel is involved then the issue has been seen on both stock and custom.
well it may be a setting from the maximums HD, try using other Rom and tell us if problem is solved, try HD Revolution or ViperOne.
Hi all, I got a Moto G3 and having issues with the gps no signal message, it is on and off, but more the time that have no signal. So have heard that Android 6 could be the guilty one.. Do any of you know if there is a fix yet? ?
