[Q][Unroot] Stock Kernel? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have to sent my phone to HTC (doesn't read sim card) So I have to unroot my phone.
Before I flashed an other ROM I made a Nandroid backup. So to unroot I used this tutorial:
http://theunlockr.com/2014/06/08/how...-one-m8-video/
I locked the boot loader with this tutorial.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2708571
So I'm close to stock. S-ON, Bootloader is locked (instead of re-locked), stock ROM from NANdroid backup.
But Kernel version still says:
3.4.0-g16cd293
[email protected]#1
SMP PREEMPT
So I think I have to fix this. But I'm stuck at this one.

Lock your bootloader with the command fastboot oem lock and run this RUU. After you install the RUU, Update from phone setting to latest JB 4.2.2.

This has got nothing to do with development, not even close. I suppose you've just posted the topic by accident here?
I think you just need to lose root?
Unroot your device and flash the stock recovery.

You're right. I created a new post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help/unroot-stock-kernel-t2911271
Maybe a mod can close or remove this one?

Help flashing ROM on very outdated M8

Hi guys, I have an HTC One M8 International version (Taiwan I believe based on the CID, 621). It is rooted but hasnt been updated in a long time. Id like to flash a custom ROM, but want to make sure I have everything needed in place (proper firmware, etc) before doing so in order to hopefully avoid bricking it. Here are some details:
Unlocked
M8_UL PVT SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-3.16.0.0000
RADIO-INVALID_VER_INFO
OpenDSP-INVALID_VERINFO
OS-
eMMc-boot 2048MB
Mar 21, 2014, 23:56:47.0
Current recovery: TWRP 2.7.1.0 (most recent version caused phone to freeze on "Entering recovery")
Android version: 4.4.2
Software number: 1.54.709.4
Id like to flash the Sky Dragon ROM, but any advice that will get me more up to date and avoid bricking is greatly appreciated...thanks!
You need to update your firmware to the latest lollipop 4.24.709.3
What you need to do is restore the 1.54.709.12 backup and stock recovery 1.54.709.12
then do multiple OTA updates.
All your needed files and How-To are here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help/tutorial-how-to-stock-stock-twrp-t3086860
Read post #1 thoroughly and follow those 14 steps.

Thanks for your help! Officially updated to 4.16.709.9 and phone is re-rooted again. Now just to flash Sky Dragon, which should hopefully be much less of an issue at this point. Ill post here if I run into more questions though....thanks again!

Ahh.. ok but why do you stop at 4.16.709.9 which is meant for Android 5.0.1 ?
Why don't you update all the way up to 4.24.709.3 which has all the needed files for Android 5.0.2 ?
Sky Dragon is Android 5.0.2, and 4.24.709.3 firmware is better. Anyway .. should not be a problem if you want to be on 4.16.709.9 firmware.
Also a thing to note, when Android 6.0 is released, you will still need to update from 4.16.709.9 to 4.24.709.3 before you can do OTA to Android 6.0

I was looking at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/development/rom-sd-4-0-sense7-port-sdkernel-t3062378
Post #3 recommends flashing firmware 4.16.709.9 for my phone....so figured it was best to stop there. Am I wrong? Is that thread outdated? (there do seem to be multiple official threads for this ROM).

That post #3 was last updated on 18th April 2015 and the latest ROM was released on 13th Sep 2015 ... that post #3 is for minimum requirement, the lowest version firmware required ... same or newer or latest and latest is always recommended.
It's ok with your current firmware now .. just flash the ROM and see how it goes. You can always update later.

HTC One M8. Please help returning it to stock

Hello,
Please help me. I have rooted my HTC One M8, installed TWRP latest edition, installed Super Su i.e successfully rooted..
But now i need to unroot it. I mean revert it back to stock. I have been searching the internet for almost a week now and not finding anything except http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help/help-returning-phone-to-stock-eli5-t3247725 but even in this i'm not able to find required files.
My phone has following specifications:
Android: 5.0.1
Sense: 6.0
Kernel Version: 3.4.0-g165a5da
[email protected] #1
SMP PREEMPT
Baseband: 1.24.21331147A1.20.68.4196.01_F
Software Number: 4.18.720.10
Build Number: 4.18.720.10 CL454154 release-keys
At my recovery screen:
Software Status: Modified
UNLOCKED
M8_UL PVT SHIP S_ON
HBOOT 3.19.0.0000
Radio 1.24.21331147A1.09G
OS 4.18.720.10
CID HTC_038
Please help..
What you can try :
Install TWRP 2.8.7.0, make a backup of your current ROM
Restore 4.18.720.8 backup and 4.18.720.8 stock recovery then do OTA to 4.18.720.10
4.18.720.8 backup - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=59065314&postcount=4749
4.18.720.8 stock recovery - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=60211779&postcount=4

Will i be able to restore 4.18.720.8 backup on 4.18.720.10??
Also i'm not able to downlaod from mega.co.nz. Can you provide me any alternate download link?
Are you in India ? You need to use VPN to download because ISP in India block Mega site.

Well thank you for fast reply sir. I am in india but that's not a problem. The PC does'nt download from mega site and the file is too large to download through phone.
One more thing, I have 3.35.720.1 recovery image (14.22MB)...
If i downloaded the third file from this list; androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=24511. Can i do something then.. the CID is also HTC_038.
If i can, then how? Using above steps you provided or something else?
No, 3.35.720.1 won't work for OTA because that's more than one version lower than your current one.
You only can use either 4.18.720.8 or 4.18.720.10
Try to contact 4.18.720.8 backup owner and see whether he can help you.
Also ask him whether he has 4.18.720.10 backup (I believe he has one).
If there is one, use 4.18.720.10 instead of 4.18.720.8

Ah! i also have ROM Update Utility, but i don't know whether it'll work on my phone or not so i didn't tried it yet... RUU_M8_UHL_L50_SENSE60_MR_hTC_Asia_India_4.18.720.8_Radio_1.24.21331147A1.09G_20.68.4196.01_F_release_417228_signed.exe
I got it
Hey friend, first of all i'd like to thank you for all your help. i think i got it back to Stock but not sure though.
I re-locked the bootloader then using PC i installed
RUU_M8_UHL_L50_SENSE60_MR_hTC_Asia_India_4.18.720.8_Radio_1.24.21331147A1.09G_20.68.4196.01_F_release_417228_signed.exe and when the phone rebooted.. i didn't find Super SU and when i rebooted into bootloader, i saw this:
Software Status: Official
RELOCKED
however my software is now 4.18.720.8 instead of 4.18.720.10 but that's no problem at all.
Now you tell me,
am i back to Stock?
is my phone unrooted now?
how can i install the latest update, using software update or do i have to find the RUU for that?
How do i myself take a stock backup since TWRP is removed.
1. Yes but one version lower
2. Yes
3. Settings - about - software update
4. Unlock bootloader with your unlock_code.bin that you got from htcdev then install TWRP 2.8.7.0
then do backup

if i unlocked bootloader, wouldn't that make the software modified or phone rooted?
And the backup which i will take, will that be a Stock Backup i.e fully unrooted, official software, etc
Also how can i take stock recovery backup? i mean recovery.img
unlocked bootloader - software modified, yes. Phone rooted, no. Root or not to root is your choice nothing to do with unlock bootloader.
If a backup made before you root the phone, yes that will be unrooted official software stock backup (just like those you can see in my thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help/tutorial-how-to-stock-stock-twrp-t3086860)
When you do OTA, before install OTA, copy the OTA zip from internal storage/downloads folder to PC. Open it with 7-zip, open firmware.zip then extract out recovery.img - this is the stock recovery.img (that's how I get all the recovery.img in my thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help/tutorial-how-to-stock-stock-twrp-t3086860)
You already managed to get back to stock after you spent a week to find how to do it ... so anything further that you need to know, all the info are available on xda like how to unlock, how to root, how to backup & etc .. just use the search function, you'll get the info. The same way how I gave you links .. I use the search function. I believe you can do this on your own.
Good luck.
