I have an external sd card. It needs the fix for kitkat. But can not use the fixes in the market they all need root. How are you guys dealing with this issue.
You just have to deal with it until root is achieved, there is not way that I'm aware of to fix the KitKat SD card changes without root.
I don't get why we have to wait for root. If the phone supports 64gb sd card out the box why is this an issue. People that don't have xda experience will be thinking something is defective. Correct me if I am wrong.

Yes I noticed that also. You shouldn't need root to fix that issue. Most people don't root there phones.

My SD card reader seems to have stopped working today. When I reboot the phone, it states it is reading the SD card, and 1 second later it is finished. Now, I can't access any data on the SD card via system programs, music, gallery, movies, etc...
I can use ES Explorer and see and use contents on the SD card, so I don't think the SD card is corrupt. How can I check my SD card reader program and see if that is the problem? Does anyone have a fix for this issue?
Edit: I am using SleeperROM 3.0.0 and the only problem I am having is the SD card reader app isn't working on boot or after unmounting/mounting the SD card. I can access all files via PC or ES Explorer.

Ok, does anyone know how to reinstall the system card reader "software" that seems to be malfunctioning? I can't even access Titanium Backup because the system won't recognize the SD card even though ES File Explorer and my PC (when USB connected) will!
Please help!

I haven't done anything like that to my knowledge. What is a .nomedia file?
Any way to reinstall the system SD card reader?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda app-developers app
Guys, I've noticed this going on a lot lately across several devices and different platforms of Android.
I think something might be wrong, as in some type of infected app we're all using.
I can't think of any other correlation between the many people suddenly experiencing this all at once across several different devices, many different ROMs, and completely different versions of Android.
I had a .nomedia file magically appear on the root of my internal storage on my Nexus several times today, and even after removing it my media would not be recognized at all, as well as the file would return every so often.
Someone should look into this.
Sent from my AOSP Android 4.1.1 Galaxy Nexus
I looked throughout the root directory and did not find any .media files.
Is there a way to "reinstall" the system SD Card reader app that autoruns when the phone reboots or the usb is disconnected after a file transfer?
Mine runs for only 1 second then states "media scan complete."
I am thinking my SD card reader app went bad today, if that is even a possibility. The CPU and ES Explorer recognize and play all files using non-system integrated apps (music, video, gallery being the system apps).
Also, all the apps installed to the SD Card are running fine.

Same here....... I downloaded paranoid android 1.9.9 and everything was fine until a reboot and all my pictures and music disappeared from my sd card...... Now mind you that I have flashed tons of roms .... But this has never happened to me ever...... The funny thing is that when I do a back up which I did minutes before my sd card went bad..... After my backup boots up I can see my pictures and music again.... But not for to long...... What can I do.........?

"Released a fix for ROM Manager where missing directories were causing the .nomedia file to be placed in the wrong directory. This was causing missing pictures from the gallery app. Sorry about that! Fixed in 5.0.1.4."
So even though CWM can read the SD card contents and install a zip file if needed it is a CWM problem? My CWM didn't update until today. I will reboot and see what happens.

I was having the same issue yesterday and installed a bunch of roms thinking it was CM9 but I looked and found that file strangely. Deleted after searching using my computer and POOF! all my stuff reappeared. Thanks!
Just an update. After the CWM update this morning and a reboot, the problem seems to be fixed now. The only other problem was that all my play lists on my music app were messed up. I had to restore data from Titanium Backup in order to get them to work properly. All good so far!

So you updated CWM through ROM Manager? And that is what caused the problem? After a ROM Manager update?

I'm sorry. It was Rom Manager that updated this morning, I believe. After that, a reboot, and everything worked well. I don't think it was CWM in itself. Crap, now I'm confused on what auto-updated this morning!

I tried a few different SD Card with no luck? My file manager can see the SD Card and its content? I tried running a fix permissions but still no luck?
You can't move apps to your Sdcard. Samsung is to blame for this.

I would love for someone who knows more about this topic to actually reply with some details. But to offer my limited understanding, I have read of two options to move apps/data to ext SD:
Directory Bind, which you can read more about here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1889550.
and
Link2SD, which you can read more about here, specifically with respect to the S3 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33831712&postcount=3379
I do not know how well these options truly work, as I am still investigating it for myself, but hopefully this will help. Of course, again, I would love for someone with more knowledge of this - specifically with respect to the S3 - to post here and offer some help.

This is great, was just going to post that link Sorry to bump a dead thread, but I wanted to pass along something else useful. There is also this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1849860 Where you flash a script and use a script manager app to to edit the init.d file to allow sd card mount on boot, essentially making the phone think that the external card is the internal storage.
I don't know what the prob is but I was able to write to my sd card this happened like a week ago I was on a 4.4.2 two rom and had no issues with it then I went to an aosp room still no issues then I flashed another aosp rom and that's when I noticed the problem I can read the sd card I can even copy stuff from my external sd card to my internal one no prob but when I try to copy something from my internal to external I get an error message saying read only file system I tried those sdfix apps I tried a couple of them and they all say I'm good I have permissions to write on the sd card but I still can't. Has anyone had this prob or can point me in the right direction any help will be appreciated.

I think there are two problemz with the external SD card on this Lollipop build.
1. Permissions which I think the play store app fixes.
2. The format must be FAT32. I don't think I've seen a fix for this, unless you want to reformat your SD card.
My SD card did die as well. I'm not sure if it's related to this update or it was just it's time. Mine couldn't be read by anything. I have sent it in to Lexar for replacement.

Mine works fine. When I installed the 20b ROM, I did a complete wipe of everything in TWRP except external_SD. Installed the system, modem, boot and bootloader images and booted up.
Had issues with some apps like DoggCatcher being unable to write to external_SD despite that being the save data path. Ran the app I mentioned above and now all works fine.

How big is that card, the only thing holding me back is the reports of 64G+ non FAT32 formatted cards not working... I use the phone as a FTP server or sorts and need larger file support than FAT32 has given me.

I use utorrent to usually download content direct on my external sd card but since the update it dont let do that anymore

I was wondering if theres any work around to download direct to external sd card? P.s. i dont have root and am fully stock due to warranty. Thanks

Nope, google doesn't want you using sd cards so they prefer to make life hell for us...
If you wish to use the sd card to torrent, really fast way to kill sd cards by the way, then you will need to root . You will also need a custom kernel or you'll boot loop after rooting... Sorry...
