Most likely the Lifeproof case or Otterbox Defender case.
I wouldn't recommend the deffender. Commuter is less bulky, but the protection level is the same

I have had an Otterbox Commuter on mine for the last two years. Saved my phone from spills, drops, and all sorts of other abuse. Though it is starting to show signs of wear. But it's more than two years in at this point. I am satisfied with it.
Just search "Otterbox Commuter S3" on Amazon

I'd recommend the otterbox defender for folks who are hard on phones. I've dropped mine from 20ft two times without any issues. This was about a year ago. My only complaint is the rubber shell after a while will slowly start to not conform to the case. But get online and make a claim as their cases are lifetime warranty.
I say life proof or PEPK Ultimate
I have the life proof nuude case on my S3 here. I've dropped it a few times (intentionally and unintentionally) and even ran it under my kitchen faucet for a few minutes. It's still holding up with no issues and I did all that months ago.
For factory work however, I recommend the life proof fre case due to the built in screen protector. However if you want to go full on drop protection get the PEPK Ultimate case. It's made of metal that holds together with screws you screw in and has a glass or plastic like screen protector, but it's not waterproof.
I have the
Otterbox Defender
installed on my S3
I personally took out the Otterbox screen protector in the case
and replaced it with
"Tempered Glass" technology.
I definitely would recommend both these products to future S3 owners.
Any suggestions on which brand of faucets is the best? Want years of reliability with very hard water, with solid/heavy construction. Considering Kohler's Solid Brass (Antique series). Anyone have experience with any other brands?
Tempered glass plus Puregear Dueltak heavy duty case. Tanky but not too bulky. Amazing grip.

Hello wonderful people of xda dev !
My wife brought a galaxy note 2 about a month ago. We only bought a flip case as she never drops her phones. However, unfortunately a week after buying her new phone she dropped it, smashing the screen and digitizer .
She really needs a decent phone, so i'm going to buy her a brand new one. I'll keep her broken one as i will probably buy a new digitizer and fix it.
Now i need to buy her a case so IF it happens again, hopefully the phone has more chance of staying in once piece. I showed her the Otterbox Defender case and although she can see it's really good, she thinks it's extremely ugly. (Typical wife)
If there any cases out there that are just as, or more so, protective as the defender case that might appeal to a woman?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
See if she likes the wallet style variations that are available.
Thank you for the suggestion. Looking at the wallet style cases, they don't seem to offer the protection that she would need. Ideally it would need to protect the phone if it got dropped. she would be devastated if she dropped it and the screen broke again.
Unfortunately, I don't think she can have her cake and eat it too. The Otterbox Defender may not match the purse, but it's the only case I'd trust to protect it from impact damage.

lol that's what i said to her. I'll be getting the Otterbox Defender case as i think it looks nice. Is there any covers or something for the defender case to 'pretty' it up? Perhaps i can convince her
update
Just an update. i'm on the coveroo website and they offer the Otterbox Commuter case with different covers. Is the Otterbox Commuter just as good as the defender? I was thinking also of buying the Ghost Glass from MIME as an additional layer of protection, (hopefully fits with the Commuter)
Also has anyone else used coveroo before?

Your Note and Case. Good starting point for your wife and you to start. Over eleven hundred posts, most of pictures of the cases with the GN2.
I guess the question is how much protection to you want or need. A simple TPU case could be sufficient. I've dropped a couple times, anywhere from a three to six feet on concrete, tile, asphalt, to carpet, and no notice damage with on a TPU case. If you find a case that's appealing, then you a post/person to ask what they think.
I was thinking about getting Samsung Protective Cover for Galaxy Note 2 which is like the Samsung official protective case but also get the Ghost Glass Screen from MIME. Anyone every used the samsung protective cover? I've seen lots of positive reviews for the ghost glass screen..
so i own a galaxy s3 and i was wondering if anyone owned an otterbox that could talk me into it

i'm actually looking into the commuter series
Some people love them, I have a friend that does.
I guess it depends on how clumsy you are or your environment and how often you drop your phone. Or how paranoid you are.
My friend drops his phone A LOT so it's the only thing keeping his phone alive.
Just ask yourself how much protection you need and if you like the case, care about the bulk, whatever.
I borrowed a friend's defender and then a commuter, hated both of them. The rubber is very grippy in my pockets and hard a hard time getting it in and out. I got a Speck CandyShell (been using these cases since I had my iPhone 4 a while back) and love them. Quality is great, last a long time, looks nice, overall a really nice case.
they are a little bulky, but if you drop your phone from great heights constantly, you will be pleased.
Otterboxes in my opinion, take away from the beauty of the phone, try to be careful cause remember galaxys usually have gorilla glass so you still have some protection without a case. Try a nice not too thin clear silcone case, I have 3 for my lovely Galaxy Note. :good:
A friend of mine owns one and two weeks ago he had the screen shattered because it fell from pocket to a little stone, the only one in the very entire place... in the other side it's me, no protection, four or five drops, and zero ****s given by my sgs3 so... i don't know if you need it or not, but if it's to be, it's gonna be...
I also think it takes away from the beauty of your phone. I personally rather have a thinner tpu case and just be extra careful when handling my phone.

How much is an otterbox?
Commuter series is relatively thin for a dual layer case. I had one save a phone from an 8 ft fall (which wasn't my fault, but that of a moronic freight driver.. long story).
To me, one of the best things about Thu phones is you can put a real case on it and not have it be too bulky.
That being said, when I take my wife out for a nice dinner, my trident case stays at home because my suit jacket pocket doesn't need the protection.

Around 20-30 dollars depending what you get. www.otterbox.com And careful buying off ebay or Amazon. There are counterfeits around.
Anyone test it 2m under water ?
hello
I have an otterbox deffender series and its great and all but every 4 month I need to ask an replacment from otterbox - they have a great warrenty but its a mess
does uag have the same case problem with the streching rubber after a couple of months( corners getting loss) ?
and did anyone use the warrenty (uag) ?
in otterbox they send you the replacment ..what about uag?
There's no rubber in the UAG, so that isn't an issue.
I did get a new one with a fault in the molding, but UAG took care of it immediately, even though purchased through Amazon.

UAG cases have no rubber it has this so called TPU material. I'm using one and i can assure that you won't be disappointed with it's quality and like danvee said their service warranty are top notch So go ahead and get one
here some pic of my S3 with a UAG case:

whats the difference between the otterbox and AUG ?
otterbox is a sillicon ? and uag is tpu ? tpu is harder
so it wont get loss after a couple of months right ?
since otterbox did save my phone a lot of times - head first on floor couple of nasty corners lol
the uag will do that right ? ( I dont expect it to survive a 50 m jump just normal bumps and falls)

UAG cases are just one piece material meaning it's just one case without a second layer like otterbox because it's already merged into one.
As for those accidental drops i'm pretty sure it'll protect the device well.
And yes TPU is a lot harder than silicon it hardly stretches on mine because of the hard fit on the device
For more info on UAG cases better check this thread out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1826668
Having replaced 2 stretched out silicone skins, and one inner case with 2 broken tabs (not from dropping) I have to say that Otterbox has a great warranty and great customer service, but there are some glaringly obvious weak areas in their application of the Defender case for the SG3.
The UAG case does come with a 'hard', dry apply screen protector as well.
It's also lighter and less bulky than the Defender.
well how about the abuse of the case ?
can it handle in the back cover strike ? not saying a jackhammer but stuff bumping into your pocket like corners of tables
Otterbox Armor series hands down for protection for pretty much any situation.

IDK.
Depends on how heavy you are, how immovable the table is, with how much force you hit it (how fast you're traveling) and how 'sharp' the corner is.
Safe to say, though, if all of these factors are taken to the extreme, the Defender probably has better survivability.
UAG is the best case I've owned and I tried a lot of them. Buttons are easier to press than OtterBox. Easier than no case, actually. I haven't needed the warranty. The case is just as tight as the day I bought it, 4 months ago. I can drop the phone from hand height without fear of breaking it. I do this just to show my friends how awesome the case is. Done it several times. No issues at all. Make sure you get a good screen protector. Zagg is awesome if you don't Swype, the texture makes your finger skip if you Swype a lot.

Has anyone ordered the otterbox defender for the Note 4 yet? It is available in black on their site now. I know the case is bulky but I work construction so I need heavy drop protection. I would appreciate any input from owners of how you like the case, also any recommended alternatives to an Otterbox.
I had the otterbox defender for my old note 3. It was amazing at protecting it from falls, drops, and the oppsies. It does add bulk to an already enormous phone, but there's something majestic about it. I also worked construction, and I mistakenly dropped it on a pile of broken concrete from a second floor. It survived without any issues. The bulk, and a little ugly otterbox has superior protection bar none.
Dude I dropped my note three from my hand holding it looking at it...fell kinda slapped it a couple times and the screen shattered in one of those it all depends on how it hits in what postion the force is on the phone....honestly the best constructed ones for protection so far that I've seen are the eBay ones made out of like tire rubber with treads on it...over a plastic inlay...holding the two side by side you can see that the otter box head of marketing is doing his job well and selling an inferior product to the masses then not most but alot of good competition...

Otterbox has saved more phones than killed. If you are concerned about damaging your phone and you KNOW HOW FRAGILE IT IS...i have a novel idea for you..
LEAVE IT HOME. LEAVE IT IN THE CAR. LEAVE IT ON THE SHELF. LEAVE IT IN THE OFFICE. WHATEVER.
For the rest of us that would like some extra piece of mind...I ordered the Commuter series in silver/black on day of release. hell the website wasn't even updated yet. It still won't arrive til wednesday however even with 2 day shipping .
Why commuter and not defender? I don't need the stupid belt clip. that's the only difference between them.
The built-in screen protector helps.

http://goo.gl/5f5J2s Hard Shell
http://goo.gl/NzfGyp Soft Cover
At At&t they had this as a package. Soft shell comes with a screen protector which is housed in the hard shell. Couldn't find the all-in-one package on either sites but this is what I picked up from there. It's a little bulky but feels safe.
For years Otterbox was the gold standard for phone protection and most phone cases have been based to some degree on the same design --surround the back and sides of the phone with a layer of rubber or TPU or plastic to provide drop protection and cushioning if you are careless with your phone. The basic design idea is pretty much exactly the same as it was since the earliest days of Android phones.
But Android phones have changed drastically. Because of the increased CPU power Android phones are running at higher temperatures every year. Phone makers have gravitated towards aluminum unibody designs for these phones because aluminum is a great material for rapid heat dissipation while plastic traps heat.
But if you use an Otterbox style case on these phones the case traps heat and completely eliminates the intended benefits of the phone's aluminum design.
I know a lot of people claim to have no problems with their Pixels overheating but I'm not one of them. If you contact Pixel support they freely admit that overheating is one of the most common problems users report. One of the first things Pixel Support asked when I reported that my phone was overheating was whether I was using a case. When I said I was support immediately suggested that I remove the case and see if the phone still overheated. So far it hasn't.
So my question is do people think an Otterbox style case is still a good idea on an aluminum unibody phone even though it directly interferes with how the phone was engineered or is that style of case becoming too out of date to use on the latest Android flagship phones?
I don't know about the Gold Standard part but they were extremely popular and I guess in a lot of ways, still are?
As far as them trapping heat in the case, they have always done that, but phones did run that hot, or we just didn't really care and phones are running a lot cooler now? I don't know. I don't ever remember taking off an otterbox case in the past and worrying about the heat. I don't even remember the last time I saw a phone with a heat warning screen that won't let you power on the device.
I have never liked otterbox cases though because of the screen protector that's built in. I always wished they had offered a version that had Plexiglas or 9H glass. Phones got bigger and their cases also didn't get any smaller. It's an otterbox after all I guess. I do believe that they are in dire need of a redesign because you are for sure right about that not having been changed. I think they should get away from the thick rubber they use and may try TPU instead. There are many "rugged" enough cases for far less then an Otterbox case and provides the same amount of protection. I think that's why their market share has dropped over the years.

My Pixel XL shut down multiple times because of overheating until I ditched the more protective case I was using and switched to a RhinoShield Bumper Case, which I'm still getting used to because it doesn't seem nearly protective enough. The Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X both suffered permanent damage over time caused by heat. Multiple LG phones including their flagship suffered permanent damage over time because of heat. Starting with the Samsung Galaxy S6 it's easy to find complaints online from users of Samsung's flagship phones about their phones shutting down without warning because of overheating. I don't think trapping heat was an issue with the older smartphones because they weren't that powerful compared with today's phones and didn't run nearly as hot. Smartphone bodies also weren't designed specifically to dissipate heat until fairly recently. I think the design of these cases interferes with the engineering design of the phones and that eventually it might get to the point where phone manufacturers might void your warranty if your phone suffers damage because you used a protective case that prevented the phone from cooling as intended.
True story about their screen protectors sucking. They are really easy to remove though. They're only held on with a small bead of glue around the outside. Just wiggle it for a few seconds and it comes right off. I prefer the matte finish screen protectors, because they resist finger prints and are reduce glare outside.

I used to pop out the plastic screen protectors myself because they were terrible. Dust would inevitably get between the phone screen and the plastic screen protector since the screen protector wasn't attached to the screen which would drive me crazy in an OCD way. I would take the phone out and clean everything but it would just happen again after a few days so I just gave up and popped the OtterBox screen protector out. That was fine as long as you replaced it with another screen protector, which I did on my earlier devices. But eventually screen protectors lost their appeal for me. If you had an OtterBox case and popped out the plastic screen protector without adding another one there would be this annoying gap between the edges of the case and the phone screen that dust, dirt, small food crumbs, salt and the like could easily get into which again drove me crazy. The gap between the edge of the case and the phone screen was so wide without the built in screen protector that you could easily stick a fingernail in it. That was when I gave up on OtterBox cases completely and started using other brands. I kind of like this bumper case I'm currently using --it blends well and you can see the actual design of the phone including the back, which I always previously covered with some black protective case or another. I'm just afraid of cracking the glass on the back of the Pixel or scratching it up. The phone feels almost naked compared with the cases I'm used to. But it also looks nicer than it did in the old case.

It would appear you're not very familiar with OtterBox products in recent years. Only one model has the built in plastic screen, several other models do not have this. Additionally, their cases have gotten smaller and more streamlined, again, it depends on the case model you're looking at. Their symmetry series is one of my favorite cases on the market. Very well built, slim and incredibly strong and protective. Sadly they don't make it for the Pixel.

Yeah, I was only speaking of the defender one. The other ones aren't bad, I just don't like the prices on them.
I don't care much about all these heating stuffs, but if you use a full body case like that, Otterbox or whatever (it was the Nillkin Frosted Shield for me), then heat will be much more intense for the reasons already mentioned on OP. I ran the Antutu benchmark app with the case on and off, and there was a pretty big difference on scores. Never did like full body cases anyway, and this was just an incentive to not use them. Backless bumpers all the way.

I am actually familiar with their slimmer cases like the commuter line but those cases still completely cover the back of the phone, trap heat and prevent aluminum body phones from dissipating heat as intended just like the thicker cases do. And the thick Otterbox Defender Case with the annoying plastic screen protector is not only still being made but it's available for the Pixel XL.

That's actually the exact same case I was using. It was very hot out both days I had problems with the phone shutting down--in the high 90's and between the heat, the sun, the GPS, Spotify, the car charger and possibly the case it was too much for the phone to handle. I've only driven around in similar conditions once since switching to the bumper type case with no back but the phone didn't overheat and shut down. I'm waiting for another scorching hot day to test the phone again.
The weird thing is that I was looking specifically for Pixel XL cases that claim to dissipate heat before I purchased the bumper case. If you do a Google search cases that claim to dissipate heat are very common for sale in Australia, New Zealand and India but the places that sold them wouldn't ship the cases to the USA and nobody I could find sells any of those cases here. Who knows if they even work--but it's easy to see why people in those particular places would be more concerned with their phones overheating than people in the US seem to be.
Otterbox Defender for the PIXEL XL is only $19.99 on Amazon....($59.99 at Best Buy...lol.) The thinner Commuter case is actually more expensive at $25.99

I tired some $10 case that was kinda like the Otterbox...POETIC Revolution Series....but the rubber it use too hard and slippery. Felt cheap.
I don't see how people can complain about Otterbox prices...$20 for a well proven brand and design to protect a $800+ device....no second thoughts here. And of course it gonna cost 2x as much at a Retail store. Prices are very good on Amazon/Ebay.
I have noticed my Pixel getting quite warm....hottest I have felt it is when it was being used naked in the Google Daydream. hanst slowed down or shutdown at all.

They normally aren't 20 bucks, normally retail is 59.99. I didn't get one at first becuase of that, but my iblason case is broken from repeated drops, so I just got it for 20 bucks. If not, i would have re purchased the iblason case for 16 bucks.

I've had the pixel XL since early Dec. Haven't needed another case until recently. So I never looked until a few days ago. I actually got a amazon wearhouse deal for 16.49 for it lol
