No root, no need to download or install anything.
This work for other devices as well as the Note 4. This enables the Google now "Ok Google" Feature where you can active Google now while the screen is off. This is something like the Moto X feature.
How To:
1) Open Google Now
2) Go to Google Now Settings
3) Click on "Voice"
4) Enable "Audio History"
5) Click "Ok Google Detection"
6)Click "Always on" and follow the remaining directions.
You Can also watch this How To Video if you want:
If you device is unsupported or it just wont work, then there is an app called "Open Mic+ for Google Now" which does this for you.
This also works on the Lg G3, Nexus 5, and Galaxy S5, from what I know. Please feel free to try other devices and let me know if they work as well.
For anyone who wanted to know, this dose not kill the better. It doesn't even show and you wouldn't notice it was on until you said "Ok Google"

Only had the phone for 8 hours too soon to tell if it's a major battery drain. However my understanding of the snapdragon 805 is it has some type of architecture built which always apps to run in a low power mode without draining much battery and Google now uses this feauture.

The first day I had the phone I used it all day and had 2% battery life when I went to bed. Woke up about 6 hours later and though it has died. Nope still on 1%, so what you say could be true.
I have this enabled and can say that my battery life is great with it turned on.....of course this a completely subjective post. But I see nothing that indicates any type of additional strain on the battery. Playing a couple of hours of XCOM however...
Only works when SVoice is on
Something to note (no pun intended), when I have SVoice disabled, I don't have any setting "Always on", however when I reenable it("Turn it On") in the app manager I get the option.

i didn't have S voice enabled when i got this working.
Here is my power usage over night not plugged in with nothing else to compete with the voice activation. Although my battery life is still pretty good, considering the circumstance, this is definitely eating away at it.
Found that when you don't use the feature for a period of time it turns off. Not completely off but, i found that I would have to go into the google now then exit for it to work again. Anyone else find to have this problem as well?
Thread title is wrong, no? Doesn't work with screen off while not charging like the Moto X does. Only works with screen on (on lock screen or unlocked), or when plugged in.

I have noticed the same exact thing. The phone 'OK Google' doesn't work with the screen off, only when I turn the screen on or plug it in for a charge. Not a big deal, but I was hoping it would work without a screen being on. Still fun to use that function, it makes me feel like I'm in the 'OK Google' commercial

Same here, Screen off unplug or plug in.
Just got my lovely Note 4 today. I can confirm that "Ok Google" works for me with the phone unplugged, screen off, and lockscreen enabled.
I didn't follow the instructions in this thread. I was aware of how to activate the feature from prior experience. I'm not sure what step some of you all missed along the way to make this feature work.

For about a week after I got the watch, there were no issues with the voice commands but now whenever I try to use the "Okay Google" command when the screen is off it won't recognize it. I have to tap the screen to turn it on, then try the command once or twice before it picks it up. I have tried a factory reset on the watch and rebooting it but nothing seems to work. Has anyone else experienced this issue?
Same for me
Try this ,go to your phone, disconnect Google now and then reconnect it again an program the voice command

OP to answer your question for using the watch one-handed, the idea of being able to twist your wrist to activate the watch is helping your situation. for me, i know that this is not reliable, but this is how the watch/software was designed.
i'm hoping the moto 360.2 is more moto X like. always on mics and ambient display.

I've tried it with s voice both on and off. when I first turn it on after a reboot, it doesn't train the voice model, but it says it's on but doesn't work. It then turns itself off, and trying to turn it on results in the voice model training opening , then saying it completed successfully, then turning its self back off.
Help?

If you read the original post, it says I've tried with s voice and without
This really isn't unique to Lollipop, as it does this exact thing on mine which is still on kitkat. Sometimes I will hear the tone acknowledging the ok google, but will immediately hear another tone. Often the screen doesn't even turn on. Even more often it just never works, although it works pretty perfectly with the screen on.
It has nothing to do with disabling svoice, although it probably is related to Samsung's implementation of svoice. Once in a while, thE phone will fail to even acknowledge an ok google request, only to sometime later say, "if you're trying to say something I didn't get that." This seems to imply the microphone is locked in the listen position, but isn't working.
Hi, I have something puzzling me and I think the community will be able to help me. I've been on CyanogenMod for the longest time before buying my N5X and one of the features I miss the most is the profiles settings.
My problem is I want to disable my lockscreen automatically when connected to my car Bluetooth. To be clear, I want it gone completely, not just the security, as in when I press the power button I go straight to Play Music. I have Trigger installed but can't seem to find a way to do this. I'm also willing to buy Tasker if I'm sure it will allow me to do it.
I'm rooted and running Cataclysm ROM if it helps.
Delete your car Bluetooth and re-connect it. It should prompt you to set up a Trusted Devoice. This will disable the lockscreen while connected to this device.

Then leave screen on for the maximum time, so you won't have to deal with lock screens, until there is an app that would do it for you.

Not trolling, it would do exactly what you asked, lock screen completely gone not having to swipe up. You never mentioned it was in a mount, are you charging it at all in this mount? If so, use the keep awake option in developer settings.

Wow. OK, sorry for giving suggestions that could have potentially helped you until you found a way to use tasker in your favor.
I stumbled on Reddit at this cool App that simulates a Notification LED using the actual screen. It was also featured on XDA and I decided to give it a try on the Mi9T. The App is called NotifyBuddy and is available for free on the Play Store.
My experience with it over a whole day was great. It actually looks like an LED lighting up. Since we have a Amoled screen it just uses a tiny part of the screen, so there is no huge battery drain. Also to prevent burn in it moves slightly in position every 5 to 10 minutes or so from left to right. You can have different colors for different Apps and how long the LED effect will be active until switching off. I have mine on for 5 minutes.
My major concern was battery life since when the App is active the phone probably doesn't go to deep sleep but after now 24 hours of the phone being unplugged I can say it's great. Just look at the Screenshots. I'm at 50% right now and almost 4,5 hours of SOT over 24 hours of usage. It works very well so far and if this doesn't get worse there is no reason to not keep it. Try it out guys if you are missing a Notification LED on the actual front of the phone.

I guess you granted the app the required permissions ( asked when you first launch it) and allow notifybuddy to start in backgroup, display on lock screen ?

I advise you to try this:
1. Remove the fingerprint.
2. Run the application, when you first start, allow notifybuddy to run in the backgroup, display locks on the screen.
3. And then create a fingerprint.
4. Reboot the phone.
A
- I received the 10.3.10 by OTA... (you can manualy check for update into the "about phone" section)
- NotifyBuddy is working with Fingerprint unlock activated. The fingerprints where created before installing the app.
Tried deleting fingerprint before installing the app.
Then tried again after.
Could not make it work. If anyone has any more suggestions, they will be very much appreciated.
Using Global Stable 10.3.10.0

Prof Reminder. Use this app and forget about any other app that involves notification LED. I use this app since i received this Mi9T. I was upset for missing the usual notification Led and i have searched for other options. This app does not consume any battery and is very easy to set up. When you have missed notification (WhatsApp, sms, call, etc), this app reminds you over and over.... Sorry if it's off topic or something but i just try to help! Respect!

I came from a OnePlus 3 and never had a Xiaomi phone before, and the lack of a visible LED was annoying me a lot.

You mean like this?
This is normal. And this is from a note 9
Also there is no burn in from AOD because
AOD moves very little after a few secs so it doesnt stay in same position.

Ya its driving me nuts too, no idea how to turn it off. My note 9 does not do this.
Yes, omg, I need to turn this off too. Even if it does shift over a couple pixels it will cause burn-in in that general area. This is a no-no

Not correct. With the Note 9, you can have AOD turn off after a certain time, when AOD turned off the entire screen went black. So for me, at 11pm my screen was solid black and by 7am my AOD was back on.
Kept me from having a mini light during the night. I am not a fan of this being forced on. Mostly due to the high possibility of screen burn in as it doesn't shift much.
I was able to do it! However it requires not having Always on display. Here's how it's done. I purchased package disabler pro which is about $3 for the app. I then disabled always on display entirely from the app. I figured just turning it off in the settings app wont do it since it's always running in the background. However disabling it with package disabler seemed to do the trick and now I no longer get the charging indicator while the screen is off.
You could have done it with disabling/uninstalling with ADB instead, and for free.

I got the package disabler from here https://www.packagedisabler.com/ . It's kind of shady so I advise to use PayPal. You will need to enable the option to sideload applications, do a search for 'unknown sources' on the phone, should pop-up right away. Download the app from the site, search it with the file explorer and install it, you should also receive a code in your email after you pay, paste it. Scroll down until you see 'Always on Display' and select disable. This worked for me. The app is more than $3.00 as they charge in Euros. Hope this help :cyclops:
