Hi:
My S4 (SGH-M919) started to give me an "Unable to detect you SIM Card. Your Device will restart to checkfor your SIM card" error unexpectedly. This became really annoying when I was getting the error 10 times a day. The phone was rooted but running stock ROM / kernel.
I stopped by a T-Mobile store to see if I could get a new SIM but they told me the first thing I would have to do is to install the latest software updates from Samsung / T-Mobile (I didn't tell them that my phone was rooted).
So back home I downloaded the latest (4.4.2 / M919UVUFNB4) and installed it using Odin. Then everything went downhill from there...
The phone would not connect to WiFi (would get a message "Checking the quality of your connection")
The screen would not turn off anymore
The soft keys would not light up
Etc...
So I went and rebooted in recovery (stock) and there I saw that I had the dreaded Dead Droid with the Red Triangle... oops!
So I did a factory reset / wipe on the phone rebooted to let the phone do it's things, logged into my gmail account... Everything seems to work fine, but when I reboot in recovery I still get the dead droid with the red triangle...
Any suggestions?

4.4.4 nh7 is the latest firmware, you probably borked your root/custom recovery. You need to start over again, check your phone for root with app from play store and go from there.

Thanks for the answer. Couple of questions:
What's the best way to "start over"? (I did the intall of 4.4.4 using Odin, twice!, didn't root after the install, but the phone was rooted before and I ran Triagle Away before I did the update).
Where can I find 4.4.4 nh7? (when I run the "software update" from the settings menu on the phone it tells me that there are no updates available)

Stock firmware can be found here:

This last link has instructions on the how.
You may need to ODIN the firmware once. Remove battery without shutting down - just pull it, and then flash again.

Rlichtefeld links are good and can get the job done, but since you had root and custom rom the only way the phone will run a software update and find it is if your stone stock (wipe with factory reset ) .
Your better off working with Odin on your PC.

Thanks for all the help... Still not good, here is what I did.
The phone was rooted but running stock ROM.
Downloaded the NH7 firmware from sammobile
Uploaded the NH7 using Odin, pull the battery off, re-uploaded the NH7 firmware.
Rebooted the phone, let it do it's things. Phone boots correctly and everything looks fine.
Shutdown the phone and rebooted in Recovery mode
And in recovery I still see the dead droid with the Red Triangle!!!!!
Here is what I see on the screen
Anroid system recovery <3e>

Volume up/down to move higlights;
power button to select.
Followed by the standard recovery menu, then dead droid image and
# MANUAL MODE #

It sounds like your using the stock recovery, that may be broken. You should install a new custom recovery like CWM. There is an app in the play store that will install one as long as your rooted, Root Rashr - Flash Tool.
May need to install superuser if not installed.

Looks like this. I used this with no problems, it will give you choices on recoveries, CWM, Philz,and TWRP.
I'm using CWM.

Looks like it. I hope in the end that will cure the "Unable to detect your SIM card error".
Is there a way to flash the original recovery?
If not, I mgiht root the phone and install CMW. Is there a Odin installable version these days or do I need to do it via ADB or the original recovery? (I haven't done it a a while!).

Only way to get stock recovery is to go back to stock, if you use the app it will install a custom recovery if you have root. it's very easy to use vs odin. There is a video that shows you how to do it, look in you tube.

I did go back to stock when I installed the latest stock ROM, which then, if I understand what you say, should have installed the stock recovery. In which case, my issue with the dead droid in the recovery screen should not be a screwed up recovery...
By "the app" you mean the CMW ROM Manager?

I was on stock /rooted NH7 two days ago, wanting to flash a transparent weather widget I located this app in the play store, installed it, ran it and had CWM recovery when finished, then proceeded to flash the zip file for the weather widget. PROFIT.
You don't want to mess with rom manager.

Galaxy S3 from at&t, i rooted my phone as soon as got it several months ago, I've flashed colockwordmode 3 times in the last day or so and i cannot make to work, i followed the steps exactly as described, Odin is showing the green pass, the binary cont is increasing every time I've tried but i can't get the phone to start in recovery mode by holding volume up, home and power! it just reboot and turns the phone on or it goes into the Samsung recovery mode (blue screen). Very frustrating!, anyone can please help.
BTW, when i rooted my phone i installed clockwordmode then and it worked fine, i had not has to use it since, I'm running the stock ROM i want to flash another ROM, before i do that i need to use clockworkmode and that's when i realized that it was not working anymore, then tried to flash it 3 times but no success. This will happen until you load a custom rom I believe. Same thing happened to me then when I installed a rom it started being able to boot into cwm

flash recovery again in odin but make sure the "auto reboot" box is NOT checked. once its done flashing, unplug it and remove the battery for a second. replace the battery and immediately hold down vol up+home+power. this should take you into cwm if it flashed correctly
this could happen when you didn't root it properly
anyways, if you are rooted(as you said), get twrp and see

If you still have root, you might want to try installing CWM directly from your phone, using the dd terminal command to copy CWM into the right partition:
Download the latest CWM .img file from CWM's site: http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
Put the file in your phone. For simplicity reason, I would suggest you put it in the root of your internal SD card. And because you will need to type the whole path+filename in the terminal in your phone, I would also suggest you rename the file to something simple, like cwm.img;
If you don't already have it, install Android Terminal Emulator;
Now, open the terminal emulator, and type the following commands:

dd if=/sdcard/cwm.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18
(That is, if you rename the CWM file to "cwm.img" and you actually put it in the root of your internal SD card. If you put it somewhere else or did not rename your file, you will need to adapt the "if=" part of the command.)

Just curious: are you trying to flash CWM via Odin? If so where did you get it from? Did you install a botched version of stock recovery maybe (or one that is from another model of S3)? Try TWRP from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28019751&postcount=1. It is at the bottom of the post and it is labeled "Odin Flashable TWRP Recovery" under Miscellaneous files. Download and install via Odin.
And if you are on Jelly Bean, your flash counter will increment in your dealings with custom recoveries and roms. You only option at this point (if you have root still) is to get Triangle Away and run it in order to reset the counter. However, even if you clear your flash counter, if you go back into recovery it will trip again.

I'm still using stock ROM, i'd like to install a custom ROM but i'm reading that you have to have Clockworkmod to do a successful install.
When i check in the files of the phone (sd card) i can see the clockwordmod folder in there there but still can't get it to boot into cwm recovery, only the Samsung recovery and I've tried the volume up home and power button so many times but no success.
Why do you think it worked when i first rooted the phone and not now?

Yes I've tried 3 times via Odin, i can't remember where i got the cmw file from, it's a tar file (clockworkmod.TAR), the part i don't understand is why when i first rooted the phone in August cwm worked, i used it to install the root and now after trying to install it again 3 times i can't get it to work.
I'm using the stock ROM, not jelly bean.

I've tried it with "auto reboot" check and without but still no luck. Like i said it reboots in the Samsung rm.

Download goo manager app and open that. There will be an option to "install open recovery" in the menu. Voilà a superior recovery that's easier to use
You can even use it to boot into recovery or install the new update for it.

Easiest way to install TWRP is using GooManager from the Play Store.
1. Open GooManager.
2. Press the menu key to open the contextual menu, and select Install OpenRecoveryScript.
3. The app will ask you to confirm you really want to install a new recovery image.
4. GooManager searches for the correct TWRP build for your device. Look at the Filename line, it should display openrecovery-twrp-2.4.1.0-d2att.img for AT&T or openrecovery-twrp-2.4.1.0-d2can.img for Rogers/Bell/Telus. Again, confirm the installation.
5. Wait for the download to begin. TWRP will install. Done.
If it does not work or if GooManager does not find the correct build for your device -- in this latter case, this should raise a flag for you, as you may not have a SGH-i747/SGH-i747M; double check your phone model --, you can always install TWRP manually. From TWRP website (http://www.teamw.in/project/twrp2), you can grab the IMG file to manually install from the terminal emulator, and a TAR file to install using ODIN.

So if that's the case (This will happen until you load a custom ROM) how can i back up my stuff before installing a new ROM? that's the reason i was trying to make cwm work so i could back my stuff.
Is there a different way to do a full back up?

if you have root, download Rom Manager and install cwm from the menu.
i've also heard that, if rooted, you can erase /system/recovery-from-boot.p and /system/etc/install-recovery.sh (using ES File Explorer or Root Explorer) an that will make cwmstick. this is due to newer software versions overwriting your stock recovery on reboot.

By installing cwm from the app store (ROM manger) will i get the same back up as i would with Odin install of cwm, in other words do i risk loosing my back up ROM using "ROM manager?"

you've created a backup already? if not, install cwm from ROM Manager, boot into cwm recovery and make your nandroid there. then you'll be all set to to try a new ROM

I got up to the part where i got to take out the battery. After i did that turned it on holding the menu, vol up, and power, i let go of power when it vibrated. However, my phone didn't open clockwork mod. I think it went into the stock recovery because it has the image of an android with its stomach open.
So then i pressed reboot system now, and my phone booted as usual.
However, i go to try a system update. It says my phone is modified.
How do i fix this root?
It won't update Cuz ur rooted install goomanger or ROM manger and install a recovery. Or use ota root keeper and update ota that way

So my phone is now rooted? How come i cant open clockword recovery mod on startup, or connect my phone to comp via usb.
What should i do... I want to flash a rom that will give me a multiwindow app.
I have a TMOBILE SGH-T999, please help me guys. Im trying to get the rom which has a multiwindow app.

I did uncheck auto reboot, and i took out the battery.
However, clockwork wasn't installed... any help? Seems like my phone did get rooted though, so how can i work around to install clockwork and get a ROM that installs multi window on my phone?
OK easy way to fix the prob reroot with root66 and install a recovery twrp from goo manager ir clockwork from ROM manager do it thus way http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1949687 just install the root66 via Odin and install recovery easy way nay trip flash counter but triangle away will fix that
Merry Christmas everyone. I tried to resolve this issue my self but was unable to. I had stock 4.3 rooted and flashed MOAR. MD5 matched. Everything seemed ok but when I flashed, it was stuck on "updating apps" for over 20 min. I did a battery pull. My phone started and I was able to go to TWRP recovery. I did a cache wipe and factory reset with plans of reflashing but everything was gone, including my nandroid. I tried to flash stock firmware from http://samsung-updates.com/ it said "failed". I cannot get back into TWRP. Is there any way I can restore to 4.1.2? Or 4.3? I just want to get the phone working again. Ideally I would like to get root back but my main priority is obviously just to get the phone working. Thank you.

I had a similar bad expreience with updating my rooted S3,
to recover your phone try to get md5 recovery room and install it using odin, try to get the one that called recovery (runs stock 4.0.4) then you can update by Kies to 4.3.
If stock means the Samsung update you need to flash the 4.3 firmware. If stock means the de-Knoxed version from here, I would start by flashing a new recovery image then reinstalling the de-Knoxed one.
Can you not get into any recovery at all?

MD5 recovery room (or rom I googled both)? I could not find it. I'm sorry i have never done this before...could you post the link for it?

When I press the volume up, home and power button it says "firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in kies and try again."
I installed the de-knoxed version..I would like to go back to the de-knoxed version if possible. Is there a way to flash new recovery image through ODIN...again, I'm not very confident in my abilities right now and don't want to flash anything to make it worse. Would it be possible to send me a link with what to flash. Thank you

sorry I cant post links here yet, i dont have the enough posts, but google "unroot sprint galaxy s3" it's one of he first links and once you get the md5 file you can use it with Odin, it's a simple process.

Fixed it, got to keep root also. Flashed a new recovery image through ODIN (link for recovery in case anyone else needs it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=38079994). Then flashed ROM. Thanks for your help guys.
I woke up this morning to my phone perpetually rebooting.
I was running a nightly of CM 11.
Now when I try to go into Recovery I get a screen that asks for a password. I have no idea what that password is as I did not set one. I tried wiping data to no avail. I tried flashing a new recovery via Odin this did not work (Odin said successful but the screen on the phone never showed the transfer of the file). No matter what wipe method I use in recovery it just says fail, doesn't work at all and hangs or will say it can't mount. I have searched and searched and tried and tried and I'm stuck. I even tried ADB that didn't work either. Please help!
Try flashing Philz Touch (based on CWM) over TWRP via Odin. I have always had good luck with CWM and Philz.

I tried this already. I cannot flash ANYTHING via ODIN. Odin states that the process completed but the bar on the phone on the download screen never shows up to show that it has accepted a file.

Did you unchecked F . reset and unchecked auto reboot when you flashed recovery in Odin? After you flash the file you have to pull the battery then replace it and boot to recovery do not allow the phone to boot to OS or you have to flash again as your recovery will only stick if you pull the battery and boot to recovery after flashing it. After you get into it the first time all will be well with the world again you can flash your heart out.

This did not work. When I use ODIN all that is happening is that ODIN says it has succeeded but the little progress bar that usually shows up on the phone when you are in download mode never comes up. I did try this method though and it didn't work.
I restarted the phone in ODIN mode then opened ODIN then connected the USB cable then unchecked the two boxes you mentioned then flashed a new non TWRP recovery then waited for ODIN to say successful then the phone never showed the progress bar so I waited 2 mins until I pulled the battery then I restarted phone directly to recovery and still have the password prompt. Even after hitting cancel I cannot interact with recovery because every option I choose just says fail. I cannot even mount external sd card.
What phone do you have? What was the most recent stock ROM on your phone? Maybe you can flash a stock ROM.
There is a copy of the stock Samsung 3e recovery (which we can't use to flash zips with) I'm curious if maybe it can overwrite what you have going on? On the password screen I wasn't hitting cancel I was simply hitting the back arrow key. I will see if I have a copy of the stock recovery, just maybe you can flash it then flash another recovery after that so you can fix your phone.

I have Samsung Galaxy S 3 At&T (d2att) SGH-I747 whichever one of those you want. The most recent stock rom on the phone was when I bought it brand new a few months after it came out. I tried installing a stock rom. I tried this using ODIN and it failed. The issue here is that TWRP somehow encrypted the entire file system so NOTHING at all in recovery works. When I use ODIN mode it never shows on my phone that it is accepting a transfer from the computer. When I tried the stock rom via ODIN method it actually failed in ODIN instead of telling me it succeeded and then just not work. It failed at the point when it says Firmware Update Start...aboot.mbn...NAND Write Start!...Complete(Write) operation failed. I am up for any suggestions but I need them to be detailed instructions because I have tried so many things I need to know what exact steps to follow.
I believe the aboot file is a bootloader. Did you ever have a stock 4.3 ROM on the phone? If you did, it probably has the stock 4.3 AT&T bootloader which cannot be downgraded without bricking the phone which means you cannot flash a ROM with an older bootloader via Odin.

To my knowledge I never had a stock 4.3 ROM on the phone. The only stock ROM to touch this phone was the one that came on it. So be specific what are you actually suggesting in this post that I do?

I am surprised that the aboot file was giving you a problem because the bootloader can be downgraded as long as it is not a 4.3 bootloader.
Do you recall exactly which ROM was on the phone when you got it? Where did you get the stock ROM?

It was a CM11 Nightly ROM from the very beginning of February. And before that it was a CM10.2 Stable ROM.

I have no idea. It was when I first got the phone in November of 2012.
Sounds like your phone may be running a 4.3 bootloader which means your bootloader is locked and cannot be downgraded. This may explain why you are getting errors when trying to flash Odin. There is no stock AT&T 4.3 ROM that can be flashed via Odin.
I've searched around for this specific problem and haven't found anything that will help me. I have the SPH-L710 model through Sprint that was previously running Android 4.4.2. That version killed the battery, so I attempted to root and install a custom ROM. I have rooted before, so superSU was already on the phone. I opted to follow the rooting directions from galaxys3root.com, which uses ClockworkMod Recovery v5.5.0.4. I did that and installed superSU again via a .zip file. When I rebooted the phone, superSU kept stopping. After some frustration, I found that there was an updated superSU v2.01 that I installed via CWM. Being an idiot, I figured I would just go right ahead and trying to install the custom ROM without checking anything. I then attempted to install the Carbon ROM 4.4.4 from galaxys3root.com without first making a backup of my existing version (again, idiot). There was some sort of error, and after that point, I was unable to boot up the phone...it would display the Samsung GS3 screen and then do a continuous bootloop.
I tried finding stock ROMS, but they usually have to be loaded from the SD card rather than through ODIN, and they so far haven't been working. I have downloaded more than one that claimed to be an MD5, but they turned out not to be. My wife has the exact same phone so I thought maybe if I use CWM to save a backup of hers to my SD card, perhaps I could restore that and boot up my phone. I got a bit farther this time and boot up made it through the Samsung GS3 and various Sprint 4g screens before getting stuck on the last Samsung screen.
If I can get the phone to boot up again, I've since learned that once you update superSU, you can have it disable knox, thereby allowing me to root, and thereby allowing me to install a custom ROM, but at this point I just need to get the phone to boot up so I can use it again.
Summary:
Attempted to root using CWM v5.5.0.4
Did not properly disable Knox first and had an error loading custom ROM
Phone stuck in bootloop
Did not back up phone first but have a backup of my wife's exact same model
Used that backup and it gets stuck on very last Samsung screen
Any and all help is appreciated.
