ART drains my battery 2 times faster than Dalvik

I chose dalvik because apps kept crashing and the phone lagged
Sent from my C1905 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

yes .stick to dalvik.
Sent from my C1905 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

ART will make the device little bit faster. But many apps won't install or run
Since in 4.4.x ART is experimental , I would recommend Dalvic

Eh, I don't like those fancy schmancy ones, so I made something real quick, but thanks!

Back in the days when I used to sport CM11 (say around January), I tried the ART mode. Whatever apps I used on a daily basis worked with ART runtime. I'm an app developer, so when I used to make applications for clients, I used to test them in ART mode all the time and I had to add no extra lines of code for that!
Getting back to the point though, ART reduces some of the lag present in KitKat AOSP (yes, it lags even on Nexus devices), but I don't really see how its going to change the way you use your phone on a day to day basis. Even if you're a power user, you don't really need ART for now; the Dalvik runtime is capable enough (and has been for all these years). ART is in development stages and while it could significantly change things with the advent of L, what with the 64-bit support and all, it really makes little to no difference on our M with CM11.

AOSP 4.3 discussion

What are things you've noticed so far in the alpha/beta builds of Android 4.3?
As of 8/10,
- (Cosmetic) I like the addition to the LTE signal. On cm10.2, the 4G icon has been replaced by "LTE". (Does not apply to SlimRom.)
- Device appears to be much, much smoother and consistent.
- AOSP keyboard no longer opens a window to save a word to the dictionary. It just does it once you hit save. (This one is a big plus for me.)
- LTE, while speeds haven't necessarily matched my Touchwiz experience, I can safely state that LTE, even with slower speeds than Touchwiz is loading pictures/videos a lot faster. It's much more noticeable how LTE connectivity has improved when going to a 4.3 rom on this device.
- Required to enable root via developer settings prior to using any application that requires root access. (This is a security feature but for someone that flashes ROMs on nearly a daily basis, it can become a bit tedious since it's just an extra step.)
Find anything new? Share your findings here.

Things are loading faster on LTE even with slower speeds? Interesting! Is your ping lower or something? I need to try a 4.3 ROM tonight.

Speedtest results yield ~10mbps in most instances but the overall browsing experience is much smoother. Perhaps something with the routing and such.

Some people have mentioned that there is a battery drain in early builds. Is this still true?

After two hours and 36 minutes of screen time, I'm at 89%. Been on 4G LTE the entire time.
Edit: I do have a 3000 mAh battery, though!
Battery has been great on slim it's also noticeably faster than 4.2 ... Camera is buggy as !-!311, that's really the only thing wrong with it though... My friend did just send me a file to flash to fix the camera, haven't flashed it yet so idk if it'll work or not

Really digging the aosp implementation of dialer completion. It's spot on! CM10.2 feels noticeable quicker than CM10.1. That's just from my p.o.v. though.

4.3 is running pretty smooth. Had it running about a week and really only issues are the damn camera... but that's not too big of a deal. I rarely use it anyway.

Is camera still buggy? what exactly is buggy about it? I havent tried an AOSP rom in like 6-8 months because first time I flased one my sd card got corrupt. I believe it is formatted correctly to where IT wont happen now and thinking about finally making the switch since touchwiz development has kind of slowed down recently and im starting to get bored. Main thing keeping me on touchwiz was the camera. I take a lot of pictures. Are there any other issues that would keep me from using an AOSP ROM as a daily driver? Bluetooth issues, random reboots, freezes ect...
I never had the luck of running a 4.3 build perfectly. Phone ended up crashing and getting stuck on the Samsung Galaxy S3 boot screen.
Latest carbon runs quite fine 8-29 nightly. However, I noticed Bluetooth doesn't appear in the toggles nor can you enable torch in the power widget. Anyone know a work around to fix this?

[Q] ART vs Dalvik runtime

Anyone enabled ART on their M8?
Since speed was never really a problem with this phone, ART has little to no benefit, it takes up about a gig or so and has poor compatibility with many apps. From my testing, around a quarter of my apps fc, blinkfeed was maybe a tad smoother, the rest of the system was already butter smooth, so far, not worth the trouble, not to mention it breaks xposed, in the future it may be worth looking into as theoretically it is better than dalkvik.
Art enabled from the get go. No problems for me. Have used it on my last Sgs4 and Nexus5 with only good effects.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
Running and it works great. Not any problem but the speed is the same i think. Not any difference.
So doesn't sound line much of a reason to switch to it yet. I was just curious since I've haven't had a device that could run ART. My N7 2012 can't run ART.
I had one or two forced closes with no noticable change to performance. I'm going to wait till it Google make it the default.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
ART is definitely smoother and snappier than dalvik. Apps load much faster because they are precompiled. Should be few issues if any. I have personally tested over 75 apps, all worked fine.
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
ART Doesn't work nice with Rdio which is my music service. To be honest I didn't notice any great performance boost so I'm happy to wait until it comes out of beta & Google use it as default.

This shouldn't be an issue of you're running stock. You might encounter this types of problems if you're using a custom ROM that has some ART and Dalvik optimizations. But with just pure Stock it should work fine.
After enabling art, nova launcher wouldn't work.. And I didn't really notice a big speed increase
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using xda app-developers app
It was stated that on devices that are high end and very recent that the performance increases would be very minimal they would be more noticable on phone that were running slow. So other than that the other benefit is that it increases battery life mainly in standby. Such as while its just sitting in your pocket with dalvik the battery would drain more than if it was running ART
I've been running ART and Nova has ran just fine! Are you on stock?

They're the 2 possible engines that Android uses to handling apps. The "normal" one is Dalvik, with that one everything works fine. ART is the newest one and it seems to be still in experimental phase, it should bring more speed and less battery usage but it can cause issues with certain apps/devices. I haven't tried it myself with the Note 4 but it seems that people who has tried it are getting issues and switching back to Dalvik. I'm sure at some point it will be ironed out but it's still a bit soon for it. Oh, and Xposed doesn't work with it (not that it matters for now on the note 4)

Maybe with the release of the next android is that could start been implemented

For me, there was a huge performance hit with ART. as well as significant Wi-Fi issues.
Using Dalvik with no issues at all.

Art on Vzw note4

Switched runtime to art.. After 2 reeboots this thing flies... Only small problem upon each reeboot it optimizes about 100 apps. Dont know how to fix it. But wow this phone got huge boost.
Anyone know how to fix optimizing apps?

I'd love to know that also. I tried ART once and the optimization thing turned me off so I switched back.

I tried Art when I had my rooted S3, it always updated the apps on a phone restart. I don't think anyone found a fix. Doesn't Lollipop run on Art? Maybe there is a fix.

Yep until L comes I would suspect it's this month just don't know the date but "ART" gives this phone huge boost..
Gonna give art a try now.
EDIT: Immediately went back. s health and mainly pandora doesn't work with it. Not to mention as you guys said, the optimization of apps after a reboot takes at least 10 minutes which is horrible. I didn't think it'd be thattt bad. I remember my moto x would only take a couple minutes. Guess just have to wait till Lollipop.

From what I've read ART on KitKat is experimental and not the same implementation as lollipop. I had it switched on here too and got some apps that didn't work so switched it back
