this is just rooted stock with playstore if you wish to try other roms use the same method with the exception of making a backup first
I seem to have tried to wipe everything on my kindle fire first generation trying to restore as my backup of the stock rom has been deleted. It was also not currently on any rom and i can not get it to boot up it just stays in the twrp boot screen instead of transitioning to the normal orange and white one. I can however still boot into recovery just not to the rom itself being that there is none. The mount option does not work as it will not come up visibly on the computer or under the hardware/device manager. So all in all i have no way to connect my kindle to install the stock rom back again. Please help as fast as possible. I have checked many other threads to no avail and this is were im at stuck with a dead kindle.

Go into mounts inside TWRP and mount sdcard. Once sdcard is mounted you will be able to see it on your computer when a USB cable is connected. Place a different rom onto the sdcard and unmount sdcard. Wipe data (factory reset) and wipe cache and dalvik cache. Go to install and install the new rom you placed onto the sdcard. You should be all set, it should boot now.
If it doesn't, you may be stuck in fastboot. To get out of fastboot, connect to the computer and run KFU and select number 1.

as i said in my post the mount option will not work on the twrp and it will not come up visibly
it will boot just not past the blue kindle fire twrp logo because there is no rom

You have to press the power button repeatedly at the blue fire logo to enter recovery

Ok i would like to help andro vista for the help he has given me, but he is gone to bed due to time in India.
I followed AV's instructions
Amazon Kindle Fire First Gen ('otter' is the codename)
You are running stock.
By rooting you do not get updated to the latest version of android.
You get access to the system files though.
Here are the steps.
1) ensure your battery is at least 90% before doing all this.
2) go and download kfu 0.9.9
3) extract it to your desktop
4) open the folder and run install-drivers.bat
5) install the drivers
6) now install the drivers
7) open the run. Bat file
8) now connect the kindle to the computer
9) if you installed the drivers correctly then under the options it should show
Adb Status nline
Boot Status: 4000
10) select option 2- install permanent root with superuser
THIS WILL NOT UPGRADE THE ANDROID VERSION!
WAIT DUDE GO BELOW
11) now the device should reboot after booting into a recovery.
12) Do this step only AFTER IT BOOT NORMALLY, THAT IS, TO THE LOCK SCREEN
Go to run.bat and select option 3 - install latest TWRP recovery
After it reboots go to the lock screen
Now shut the device down. Switch it on. Yes don't panic, the kindle fire logo is blue! At this point again push the power button. It should cycle through a list. Release the button when it says recovery.
It will not you into a cool gray screen. On the top, make due it says 2.6.3.1
IF YES, go to reboot button
System
Now no need to press the button
Time to transfer files!
13)This is the OS I made. Download it. This is the latest KitKat operating system.
Put it in the downloads folder of the kindle. Make sure the download is complete.
DO NOT EXTRACT THE ZIP FILE
14) shut the kindle down and then boot in recovery.
15) in recovery, click backup. Select all partitions on the left.
Swipe to backup
The back up will take time. This completely stores all your OS files and data.
16) go to home by clicking the icon in the top right.
17) go to wipe and select advanced wipe.
18) select all OTHER THAN SDCARD
this wipes all your data and the operating system. It is very necessary
19) now go home
20) click install
21) go to the downloads folder and select the file you just put in download
The infriction one
22) select it and swipe to confirm flash!
23) wait. After its done select reboot system
24) after the blue kindle fire logo, notice any difference! That's the in friction bout animation! It goes of screen at first but comes back properly. Wait some time!
You have installed latest android KitKat! And g Google play store! Download your UK apps!
If you have any doubts/queries fell free to all me!
Everything was fine until i got to step 15 backup and the kindle got stuck backing up.
So he said to install flashify.
I got confused by this and thought (extremely stupidly) that I could retry flashing it, by restoring the kindle to factory settings, and starting from step 1 i could try again
I was totally wrong , and now I have this when I boot the kindle it still has the blue logo, and the three options and will boot normally
When i boot the kindle up it flashes with the blue screen with the screen options allowing normal boot etc, Anyone got any ideas how to start again
sorry i feel so stupid so could really use your help PLEASE guys as andro is gone for the night
update
ok i tried various things to try to get it to root, and made a mess of it.
Stopping now before I make a complete hash of it.
The only files left on the kindle fire first gen, are twrp v 2.0.0 so if someone could guide me in the right direction id appreciate it
nothing else seems to be left on it
windows 7 x64
all it does it boot into TWRP V2.0.0
I have a Kindle Fire (Gen 1) that is on CM9 Android 4.0. Stats from About Tablet below. I am unable to boot into recovery. When I hold the power button and choose recovery it boots directly into CM9. When I shut it down and hit the power button I get the Kindle Fire logo and then after a blank screen for about 5 seconds immediately kicks into the CM9 splash screen.
I spoke with someone at the N2Aos support and they said this was the place to ask because neither of us could find anything in relation to this on this site or elsewhere. If there is any additional info I can provide please let me know
Thanks ahead of time for your help!!

Thanks Shadow. I gave that a shot but it looks like it can't find the device. I tried rebooting the Kindle while it's hooked up via USB (I get chimes when I disconnect or reboot the Kindle like the PC detects it). It is showing up as an Android phone. I can't seem to get past this point. I also tried deleting it in Device Manager (and deleting the driver) and reran the install_drivers.bat but no luck there either.
Thanks again for your help!
I tried to include a screen shot image but it looks like I need more posts to do so. Here is where it is sticking:

If we get stuck here for awhile, power the kindle on and off a few times.
You should also check device manager for "kindle" If so, rerun the driver
installer that came packaged with KFU.

another option
install twrp manager app,
if TWRP manager shows as Galaxy Nexus, don't use it, try Flashify

This may be a dumb question but where in TWRP Manager would it show as a Galaxy Nexus? I went into Advanced > Install Recovery and the Device Name shows as otter.
Otter is kindle fire 1, should be good.

Sweet! So from inside TWRP Manager what is your suggestion to do?
Can I just Install the update-kindle-6.3_D01E_4019920.bin from inside there to return this back to stock?

no will need a older 2.2.2.1 Twrp to install stock kindle
Update:
TWRP Manager: I tried running the Install Recovery option. It downloads and says it flashed but it's still rebooting directly to CM9.
Flashify (for grins): Same issue using that same recovery.img file where it says it flashed successfully but when I choose reboot now it just goes from the Kindle Fire screen, 5 second delay on a blank screen and then into the CM9 splash load screen.

TWRP Manager is not working for me either
try Flashify with
openrecovery-twrp-2.2.2.1-blaze.img
and update-kindle-6.3_D01E_4019920.bin rename update.zip
place both on kindle's sd card
open Flashify>allow root access>recovery image>choose file>select>openrecovery-twrp-2.2.2.1-blaze.img
flash recovery? select Yep!
Flashing
reboot now
press power button for boot menu
select recovery
once twrp boots
select install>update.zip>wipe cache and dalvik>reboot
should reboot to stock Kindle fire
it will not be rooted nor will Twrp installed.
---------- Post added at 01:28 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:18 AM ----------
if that Twrp does not install try
this zip version zip-otter-twrp-2.2.2.1-blaze(sd_shadow).zip
open flashify>zipfile>choose file>
flash file> Yep!
File Path>Use provided
Flash Complete>reboot now
allow cm to boot up
reboot
press power button for boot menu
select recovery
---------- Post added at 01:32 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:28 AM ----------
may need to reboot twice with the zip version, I did anyways.
OK I tried the img file, rebooted, no blue screen to enter recovery.
Tried the zip file, rebooted into CM, rebooted again no blue screen. Rebooted again, no blue screen. Tried a third time and same thing. For whatever reason it just doesn't seem to want to take.
Sorry to be such a pain, I was really hoping this wouldn't require too much of anyone's time.
you don't get a blue screen, it's black with
Kindle (in white) Fire (in Blue) in the middle of screen
and press power button for boot menu (near power button)
when you press the power button it will cycle through 3 options
normal boot, recovery, reset boot mode
see FIRE FIRE FIRE on the Kindle Fire
Sorry I should have worded that differently. I only get the initial Kindle Fire screen with the orange fire, a blank screen for a few seconds then directly into CM9. I never get the blue Fire portion.
try installing FIREFIREFIRE 1.3 (u-boot.zip) with Flashify

or
thread: Version 1.5 of FIREFIREFIRE

Tried both versions of FIREFIREFIRE, same thing. No change in the color of Power light or the Fire icon.
When flashing the zip files I am leaving everything as default before hitting Yup!. Recover is set to TWRP or Philz and none of the Wipe options are checked. Is that correct?

First thing is you have to get the drivers to install..
Uninstall...re-install...try different drivers until you get it.
Then try it all again....if everything fails again try wiping the recovery partition...

I was finally able to get it going.
I ran the Kindle Unbrick utility, no reason why but figured wth at this point. After running the "Other..." fix it was stuck at the Kindle Fire screen with the orange coloring. At this point I was able to run the Restore2Stock tool. After their support jumped on and fixed some partition issues it appears I am off and running. Thank you guys for all your help, especially you sc_shadow!
Hi. I decided that I wanted to go back to the amazon os on my Kindle Fire from OtterX. First, I changed the partition back to "AMAZON". Then, followed this step:
Code:
STEP 4: WIPE PARTITIONS IN RECOVERY
[Main Menu] Wipe -> Advanced -> check "Cache" and Swipe
[Main Menu] Reboot -> Recovery (wait for it to come back into TWRP)
[Main Menu] Wipe -> "Format Data", type "yes" and hit enter
[Main Menu] Wipe -> Advanced -> check "System" and Swipe
Then, after I installed the stock prerooted rom for the Kindle Fire, the device will load up at the boot loader, show the original kindle fire logo for a split second, then go back to the bootloader. It was getting late, so I decided to power off the device and work on it the next morning. When I turned it back on. It would only show the OtterX boot loader logo, then the screen will turn black. Then it will do it again and again and again. Is my device bricked? How can I fix it?
I fixed it. I just turned it off and back on voila! Now I'm planning to install FFF and the other TWRP through the recovery.
Blaze/Otter twrp.zips will not install in OtterX twrp, unless script is changed to allow install on OtterX device, FFF.zip should be the same.
I would just flash in fastboot, and flash bootloader first if you are going to flash 2.2.2.1 twrp
