The Android Open Source Project (AOSP), led by Google, is tasked with the maintenance and further development of Android. If you find a custom ROM that is based on AOSP, that means it will be closer to the original, vanilla Android created by Google rather than the bloated software created by Samsung, HTC, LG, and Motorola.

The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) is an initiative created to guide development of the Android mobile platform. The Android platform consists of the operating system (OS), middleware and integral mobile applications.
The AOSP is overseen by the Open Handset Alliance (OHA), a Google-led coalition of over 30 wireless carriers, semiconductor companies, handset manufacturers and software companies. The purpose of the OHA is to further the development of open source standards for mobile devices.
The OHA member list includes Qualcomm, Broadcom, HTC, Intel, Samsung, Motorola, Sprint, Texas Instruments and Japanese wireless carriers KDDI and NTT DoCoMo. Companies that are conspicuously absent from the OHA member list include Nokia, Symbian, Apple, RIM, Microsoft, Verizon and Cingular.

AOSP is a term you'll see used a lot -- here, as well as at other Android-centric sites on the Internet. I'll admit I'm guilty of using it and just expecting everyone to know what I'm talking about, and I shouldn't. To rectify that, at least a little bit, I'll try to explain what the AOSP is now so we're all on the same page.
For some of us -- the nerdly types who build software -- the full name tells us what we need to know. AOSP stands for Android Open Source Project. The AOSP was designed and written by folks who had a vision that the world needed an open-source platform that exists for developers to easily build mobile applications. It wasn't designed to beat any other platform in market share, or to fight for user freedom from tyrannical CEOs -- it exists as a delivery mechanism for mobile apps -- like Google's mobile apps, or any of the 400,000+ in the Google Play store. Luckily, Google realized that using open-source software would ensure that this operating system/mobile application content delivery system is available for all, for free. And by choosing the licensing they did, it's also attractive to device manufacturers who can use it as a base to build their own mobile OS.
The premise plays out rather nicely. Google writes and maintains a tree of all the Android source code -- the AOSP. It's made available for everyone (you, me, manufacturers you've never heard of and not just big players like Samsung or HTC) to download, modify, and take ownership of. This means the folks at CyanogenMod can add cool stuff like audio profiles. It also means folks like HTC can change multitasking in ways that many of us don't like. You can't have one without having the other. The big players then use their modified version of this source to build their own operating system. Some, like Amazon, radically changed everything without a care to use Google's official applications and keep their device in compliance with Android guidelines. Some, like HTC radically changed everything yet followed the Android Compatibility Program (ACP) so they could include Google's core application suite -- including the Google Play store. Some, like the folks at CyanogenMod, enhance the pure AOSP code with additions but don't change the overall look and feel. Again -- that's how this open-source thing works. You can't have it without allowing folks to change it as they see fit, for better or worse.
Any of us can download and build the AOSP. We can even stay compliant with the ACP and contact Google about including their applications. Yes, any of us could build our own device using the AOSP code in our garage or basement with Google's full blessing. That's the beauty of the AOSP, and we wouldn't want it any other way.

So this will be AOSP based, and not CM9 based? If so, CAN'T WAIT!
it is AOSP, not AOSP based
Or CM9 or anything
EDIT: Hope it will not end like Maclaw´s never released AOSP Project
Amazing,first AOSP for our gio.
Not second but first. We had working closed-alpha of our AOSP ROM.

We prefer make a previous working version before making another.
That's like building ICS earlier than GB!? What the sense?
If we'll succeed to build AOSP ICS for GIO, then (maybe) we'll do the same with AOSP JB.
Cuz jellybean is very buggy and ics is much stable

Yeah I know but (Just my opinion) having an aosp gb is like having a cm without extra features, and cm7 without themes it's ugly, ics is awesome without any extra setting, because google team has done a great work , so , considering that with many build of aosp gb for msm based devices we have the bug of the first cm for gio or other (Wi-fi, gpu , radios ) , having an ics one with same bug of cm9 will be better
Too bad I dont have linux

EDIT1: About GPL
As you can see @andyharney has checked sources and reopened all closed threads.
Kernel sources were available on GitHub FOR A MONTHS.
And YES, kernel wasn't modified since CM9 RC2. It's the same old kernel.
Here comes the link: https://github.com/MaclawStudios/android_kernel_maclawstudios
You can also apply 2.6.35.7 to 2.6.35.14 patch if you want: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=779403&d=1321023939
Also, I noticed that some of you are doing everything to destroy our work, and that's why we aren't publishing device profile sources. By the way we don't have to do this. We've developed device profile from scratch on closed license and we just won't publish it, just like Samsung. You can still use our old device profile or Jellaxy one.
EDIT2: About Deep Sleep in Beta 3
I noticed some people experiencing issue with deep sleep after installing the update. If you are affected by bug, please turn off Google location services. We’ll try to fix it in next release.
EDIT3: About something called "Seeder"
Please, don't use famous app/hack called "Seeder". We did a quick research and /dev/random isn't used in android frameworks anywhere. Seeder will improve performance ONLY in some custom apps or cryptography functions, and that's why... we've integrated seeder tweaks in beta3. Installing "Seeder" would only decrease your phone's performance because it will work in background and waste your RAM.
EDIT4: Bugtracker
Please, use bugtracker if you want to report a bug:

Good job! For alpha1 version sounds great! Downloading it right now!
By the way, at the moment this AOSP it's better than erikas's one
it works great for me so far
deepsleep is working, yt hq is smooth
everything is butter smooth
notification toggles are not part of aosp i guess (better make use of widgets then)
no random reboots
does it support a2sd ext or i have to take my chances
good work!

thank you marcin and maclaw..
A mini-bug I've found:
When you try to enter the "Select time zone" menu from "Date & Time", nothing happens - you get back to Settings menu
Also, I don't think this is a bug, but there are not status bar toggles Please implement this, even if maybe it's not AOSP - think that if Samsung would release ICS for Gio, there would be status bar toggles, as in Gingerbread stock rom.
bad work!
- random reoboots/hot reboots, nothing stable for me ...
- you modded the rom, it isn´t a clean aosp!
* You added Superuser
* You added Reboot Option in Power Menu
* You changed Bootanimation (Normal AOSP uses one in framework-res.apk)
* You added GApps ...
Normal AOSP Size is around 100 mb, so why urs is around 120 mb?
sry but AOSP means for me, that nothing will be customized, pls marcin, i know you are a gr8 developer but provide flashable packages for extra stuff! and not customize it in rom directly
It's great as it is! What difference is if you install GApps later or if it comes preinstalled? Same goes for SU!

You don't have to use our ROM. You can build your own ROM if you want
Welcome to VanirAOSP. Our mission is to deliver a clean optimized version of Android with subtly improved versions of the features you love to as many devices as possible. we've tried to incorporate and improve our features in a way that makes them more cohesive to improve the overall user experience while correcting any performance regressions and improving functionality..
What to expect:
- This is not a McCopy ROM. What goes into our build is well thought-out and not a bunch of stuff duck taped together because we could.
- maximum optimization. We do our research. We test hard. We build -fstrict -O3 globally and include a massive array of code optimizations and memory leak fixes that we write ourselves and eventually submit to AOSP or Linaro.
- originality in our source. We generate a lot of new commits being features or general code improvements. We are open source to share and improve the community but we also try to make sure we offer a unique experience.
- aesthetics.. hopefully in your opinion
General features:
stock mode - ability revert to stock AOSP code with the exception of a few custom features we chose to keep active
enhanced performance.. longer uptime with less slowdown
custom written CRON and init.d.
UI and graphics improvements
custom navbar, navring, and hardware key features
halo (active display & lockscreen notifications are in review)
usability improvements like power reboot menu and sound
animation control
Improved Vanir keyboard
CM's profiles & quicksettings
additional quicksetting tiles
immersive mode
statusbar mods
clock & battery mods
lockscreen blur and other mods
soon to come -> quick cam and flash notifications
busybox, embedded root, init.d, cron etc

OTA updates should work by the way and there will be nightly builds.
@guidoido004, autofocus does not work yet (without the script) but I do have some ideas. I'll work with Chad on it. Unfortunately, other kernels don't work (if they're not based on Chad's). Haven't figured out why, but other kernels seem to reverse the colors.
We can add features, just let me know what you want and me or one of the other guys will work on it.
MultiWindow unfortunately won't work yet because it conflicts with Halo. Active Display is available, as is HALO and PIE and many other features from other ROMs.
Nice nice nice! Thanks my man! BTW, how about the Quick Access Ribbon? Is it not overlapping in this build? Because for E975 VANIR, the issue is not yet fixed. And for recovery, CWM/Philz Touch or TWRP? Thanks!
Quick Access Ribbon still overlaps. I think it is in VANIR's source. This is the only bug I see, what keeps me from using it for daily driver. I hope it can be fixed. I already reported it on the G+ community 2 days ago....

Hey is there any rom for nexus 5x with android version 7.0
Here are some of the features we expect from CM14 or Cyanogenmod 14
1. CM14 Multi-window Mode
Well, multitasking is the key feature that every user is looking for nowadays. And, CM14 is all set to enhance this feature by multi-window mode that will allow the users to run multiple apps at the same time on the screen. With this split screen feature, you can also drag and drop text in between apps, when required instead of typing the content all over again or copy/pasting either.
Multi-window mode CM14
The app developers have to add support for the split screen mode to make their apps compatible to use this feature on the all-new upcoming CM14 ROM. Users can open apps side by side and resize the app window using a slider and adjust it according to their preferences.
2. New System UI in CM14
Cyanogenmod 14 may follow Android N as it would introduce a completely new User Interface that will not include the famous app drawer. If not, then the latest ROM from Cyanogenmod may allow the option to switch between the two different UIs, one containing the app drawer and the other without it. Such UI are highly favoured and seen on iOS and MIUI devices.
3. CM14 will have a Better Optimized Battery Management
Battery optimization has been the concern for Android developers as well as the community at Cyanogenmod as Android devices are highly criticized for low battery life compared to iOS devices. However, CM14 is expected to enhance its battery optimization feature that would boost the battery life up to 20% with the Doze mode as seen on Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
Cynogenmod is already developing rom for nexus 5x
is there any news about this topic...... if you have plz comment
CM 14 is coming....
I'm going to start making CM 14 UNOFFICIAL for BULLHEAD expect it to be up very soon.. :fingers-crossed: :fingers-crossed:
Hi everyone, I would like to know if you have suggestions for a Stable ROM for Xiaomi Mi 11 Lite 5G NE. My last experience of Flashing is from 2018 for Samsung S7. Pixel Experience Plus seems nice, but if you guys know of a more stable or a SuperLite version, I would save me some time reading. Thanks a lot..

Yes , the Android 12 versions are quite stable
Haven't tested Android 13 as it's quite recent
as for me , i prefer crdroid. but our device development pretty quite.
For me it's xiaomi.eu rom
There is a bunch of ajustements
For other aosp os's i can't find special features that could make me change
Especially the estetical point i prefer xiaomi.eu customisation

Option to auto-expand first notification
Notifications priority settings
More edit options in Gallery app
Enabled MiDrive in File Explorer

Allowed disabling specific system apps
Importing theme .mtz from zhuti.xiaomi.com via ThemeManager
No useless Chinese bloatware apps
More free RAM due to less background processes
Mi Video, Mi Music, Mi Browser: No any useless Chinese content and ads
No possibility to re-lock bootloader accidentally with flash any xiaomi.eu release
Added real 27 languages translation made by Official MIUI Fansites and MIUI Fans
Added EU T9 dialer support
Added charging sound switch
Optimized GPS settings for EU
Optimized Battery consumption
Optimized RAM consumption

wow mate this is loaded info, thanks.. I'm getting sick of the ads from Xiaomi UI now, and forcing me to use their apps on the UI without an option to uninstall them. maybe I'll check this one out. thanks alot.
Spoiler: Suggetions Detail
for suggestions from others, Is there some other ROM for Mi 11 Lite 5G NE that features bloatware free, and really stable enough? Thanks all..
You are welcome
That's the best thing in xiaomi.eu roms
No ads
I saw also that in the stock rom themes now are payable
Which is not a problem in xiaomi.eu rom because of the import mtz feature in themes app
I love also the timeless aod

It appears Xiaomi.eu ROMs is another Forum, could you link me to your specific ROM Post? Thanks!
is it this one MIUI 14 Stable?
I'm actually choosing between these two, Pixel OS (Stable) and Xiaomi.eu
Pixel OS is quite pulling me because I get to have the Pixel Experience and there are over 171K Views which could mean more users, on the other hand your suggestion, Xiaomi.EU is also something that is already dedicated to my unit, with MIUI that I like better than Samsung's One UI, besides the Bloatware and Ads of course.
Still, I'm doing my research and your inputs are valuable to me because you have already done what I am about to do, once again after several years. I'm still looking on TWRP setups too, seems quite different now. There's this method that I have to register my account to my device through Developer Options, that I don't remember doing on my Samsung S7 before. I'll also have to look on possible Brick incidents, I surely don't want that.
Mny Thanks..
Both PixelOS and Xiaomi.eu are great roms. You should try them both. Plus both roms have zero bloatware/ads.
I am on xiaomi.eu 14.0.8.0 and the experience has been great!
this is the latest build download file for lisa
https://sourceforge.net/projects/xiaomi-eu-multilang-miui-roms/files/xiaomi.eu/MIUI-STABLE-RELEASES/MIUIv14/xiaomi.eu_multi_MI11LE_XM11Lite5GNE_V14.0.8.0.TKOCNXM_v14-13.zip/download
you have to unlock your bootloader at first via the program mi flash unlock
follow youtube tutos you have to wait 127 hours i think to could do that and you will loss all your data
so you have to backup your photos and stuff
the decent recovery existing till now is developped by Dkpost3 that we thank by the way
https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...overy-3-7_012-new-a13-aosp-beta-test.4557313/
for aosps like pixel os you should know that there is bugs and things that are not working or can stop working in the latest builds, this is not happening with xiaomi,eu roms (you feel like it's official or maybe a better experience)
I'm currently running Paranoid Android Topaz 1 on my phone now. It is pretty good and close to stock Android experience, including AOD and animations. Make my phone feel A LOT faster and smoother than regular xiaomi or xiaomi.eu roms.

I see, another contender (I only found Paranoid Android Topaz 2 on this forum though), I'll check it out. Thanks all.. this is very helpful.
There's a massive development happening outside XDA! On Telegram, search for Xiaomi11LiteNEUpdates
Personally I use Pixel OS, but considering the switch to ColtOS. I didn't like Xiaomi.eu because I hate how MIUI handles animations/notifications as well as the inability to use gestures with non-stock Android launchers.

Actually, no. I live in Egypt and all of my banking apps works, albeit without root, obviously.
AND, even if you're rooted, you can use Shamiko to hide root successfully. You can find it here: https://github.com/LSPosed/LSPosed.github.io/releases
