So the rumor is no SD card slot on this baby? I'm wondering how much it will matter? I am not too worried about room. I will just buy the biggest one available in terms of internal storage and be covered there. I'm more worried about development. I have rooted and installed custom Roms on my current Samsung Continuum, thanks to the good folks on this forum, and every method involves flashing the rom from the SD card. How will this be different without one? Is installing custom roms/themes, etc more difficult? I've never owned a Nexus S or any other phone that didn't have the SD card, so I am not sure how that works. T

It matters to some people. Doesn't matter to me. Never filled up my 16gb. NAND memory is way faster than sd cards.
It won't matter to flashing roms.
It will shipped partitioned like the Nexus S. Nexus S has no issues with it at all.
The internal memory is partitioned I have the nexus s on the box it says 16gb( I know with all my hard drives on all OS that you never get full capacity)
They partition it off and whats left over is then made to look like the SD card for android's storage purposes. You will not miss a thing when it comes to flashing roms and such, since the storage part still mounts the same way.
I rarely need the storage but those one the fence dontgforget about google music(and other services) that will backup your music to teh marvelous cloud and let you stream and even download for offline play to your phone

That's exactly the error i made when purchased the old Nexus S
I was also a PRO preacher of cloud storage (combined i have aprox 70+ GB of free cloud storage among different services), until reality hit me in the back
all those space was useless the moment you lose reception with 3G or WiFi
basically if you are in a subway, or your work place is several walls away, don't expect to get a new batch of streaming music or whatever important file you needed to pull from the cloud.
the 14 GB space you get in the phone is no where near enough for anything, after install apps, and few good games, and couple of nandroid backups.

The sgs2 has 11.5gb free space so im sure the gs will have the same, and your right this isn't enough especially with backups.
There will be a 32GB model, so there shouldn't be an issue.
I was really looking forward to this phone but the lack of sd card support just ruined it for me. It's not just the principle of it (charge 50-100 bucks more for a bigger ram chip that cost maybe $5) but I for one take advantage of having a swappable sd card.
It can especially come in handy on a phone that is soft-bricked.
I'm OK without one. I had two different SDcards from different manufacturers fail on me, causing me to loose my files.
I have not run into that issue using the internal memory in my phone.
My tablet does not have an SDcard, so I've adjusted quite well without one.

I don't understand why people say having no sdcard is a deal breaker. It's the same damn thing. Big deal you can't swap out cards, all you have to do is mount usb mass storage then ZOMG you can change your data. People will complain about anything no matter what device comes out.

I agree. I think it may still sell well without one. The iPhone doesn't have one, and they sell that phone by the millions.
As long as I can use a file manager, store any type of file type on it, and install custom ROMs if i so choose, then I'm good.

i can understand how it can be a deal breaker. people who flash daily would rather use an expendable sd card whose write cycles are limited. and some people do have to move data frequently but i'm sure those have figured out how to do it wirelessly. and then you have your secret agents where being discrete with the passing of information is crucial. kinda serious with that. and then you have the peeps who just have to have their entire collection of music on them because the phones these days do more than double duty. i need to go through my phone again, but right now i'm using about 16gigs of data. approximately 10 gigs is music. then some books. a couple of backups. sync'ed data. maybe 1 gig of pictures. and videos can require lots of data and having a 32gig or 64gig sd can be a tremendous help.

yeah, I'm sure other have posted this, so what. anyway, why would they not put one in to the Nexus phones? removable memory is an excellent feature to have, and can't be that expensive to add a reader if EVERY phone but the iPhone and Nexus has them. it's a total dealbreaker for me and many others.
the real problem is, if Google just made a little more effort to make the Nexus phones competitive by giving it this basic feature, more people would get them, and then there would be more pressure for OEMs to stop filling phones with bloat and their crappy unstable hacks (Sense, touchwiz etc.) that are dragging Google's platform down with fragmentation.
This question has been asked many times and I guess we'll never know for sure but it is Google who's ideology is to keep people online as much as they can. It makes sense to limit local storage and push people towards using cloud storage, particularly with the launch of Google Music where you can store all your music with Google anyway (which would free up a lot of space). Its a great idea, too bad 90% of us have capped data plans and streaming is not possible (unless carriers make it unmetered)
Keep in mind. We have a 32gb model available. With everything going to the cloud, I know that I rely much less on physical storage. Especially with Google Music. (I keep about 1k of my 4.5k songs locally on my phone)
The only thing I would need storage for would be apps, pictures, and a few movies. More than enough.
May be they rely on the USB Host mass storage feature.

I think it has to do with memory speed and performance. Removable memory is great, but personally in a smartphone I don't see the need. Once I activate a phone I never remove the SD card. If I need to xfer a bunch of files to or from my PC, I'll hook it up via USB.
How many of you remove your card on a regular basis to put in a different device? I guess its those people that would benefit from a removable card.
The rest of us should be happy with the extra speed and performance from using onboard memory.
Oh and 32gb is the limit on the microSD cards anyway so I don't see the problem of "limited" space on one's device.

I'm annoyed there isnt any microSD slot! But I have been surviving with an 8gb microsd for years now and only use 2-3gb max..so I'll survive without it I guess.
Good thing is that the built in storage will be much quicker to save on!

Same here, my 8GB microSD has 2-3GB free and a fair chunk of it is for backups from messing with ROMS and Titanium backups, in addition to the usual app data, music, photos and videos.
Given it looks like for some odd reason we may only be getting the 16GB version in the UK, I think I'll be fine with the 16GB version.
Like the title says, I'm curious to see how many people actually wanted this function. I was a bit disappointed when I heard about the lack of removable memory, but I lust after this phone. I do have a 16GB card that's near capacity. I haven't cleaned it out in a while, so I'll do that first. Hopefully 16GB will be enough for me. But I digress, this isn't a rant about how the Galaxy Nexus doesn't have removable memory. This thread is more about seeing the percentage of people who did want this function.
I did want it, just like I wanted it on the NS. But I understand that I don't NEED removable storage and will be buying the GN the first chance I get. And given the choice, I'll probably go with a 16GB version, because I still have about 4GB of free space on my NS.
I really wanted an sdcard slot on it. I will have to import the phone as the 32GB versions as there seems to be no current plans to sell that version in Sweden according to Samsung themselves. 32GB is minimum for me. I had hoped to be able to get a 32 GB version and then plug in my 32 GB microsd for even more storage.
Wanted it, but mostly because i got a 32GB MicroSD card already
All of my storage is wasted on nandroids anyway.
The lack of the card slot (which even my Nexus One has) is a real shame - it would only have cost a few pence to include a card slot unless there is something I have missed. The slot would have been preferred to the barometer by the vast majority of people - if we had to choose one or the other.
If they were releasing the 32GB in the UK i wouldn't have wanted an SD slot as that would be enough for me. But as we're only getting the 16GB for whatever reason i would want an SD.
As they're not doing either i'll have to stay with my GS2.
i know i'm having issues with my card slot and/or SD card on my Fascinate. It'll say my SD card is ejected when it's not. I'm starting to think the omission of a card slot isn't so bad.. less moving parts = less things to break? lol
Not too bothered about it at all, never take my card out of the current phone.

Use the cloud... everyones doing it heh.
Besides stuff that needs to be on the phone, almost everything (music, docs, photos) are in the cloud for me.

You are totally missing the point of the sdcard slot. The biggest advantage is being able to upgrade the amount of storage if you need it. The fact that it costs next to nothing now makes it even better. Also, a less used upside is the ability to read it even if your phone stops turning on at all.
To me, the best solution would be to have lots of internal storage but still have the option of an sdcard for extra storage for movies, lossless audio and other big files if the user wanted. I would be totally fine with it being used entirely for user storage. Any form of cache files that are currently stored on the sdcard probably belongs on the internal memory.

Well you got a small screen so movies shouldnt be large in size and phones probably aren't the best devices to playback lossless audio to make a difference audibly.
I'm pro SD card though but really you just slap a large one in there and forget about it. I do use it as a quick medium to transfer custom roms and kernels to my buddies... pictures to my gf... etc. Seemed transfers were faster directly using the SD card vs going through the phone... but with the cloud and wireless transfer methods, its a mute point.
Most stuff can be in the cloud such as pictures and music and even nandroid backups (only need a few locally). I keep games/apps/wallpapers locally but those could even go to the cloud. As long as I can download them when I need them. And you don't need to have a whole movie collection on you at all times. Just a few throwbacks for travels.

I generally buy tablets with at least 32 gb. I bought the iPad Air with 64 because I learned my lesson with the iPad 2 and filling it up.
When I went to Best Buy to pick up a Note 10.1 2014, they only had the 16 gb model. I could have waited, or picked it up somewhere else, but I wanted to take advantage of Best Buy's financing (18 months no interest) and I hate waiting for things.
After installing all of my apps and downloading the data for them, I have about 6 gb left. The problem is, I read a lot of comics. A typical comic in the Comixology app will run you about 100 mb or so. I delete many of them when I have read them, but I fall behind on my reading fairly regularly and accumulate quite a few. I also have a lot of articles in Pocket that I'm behind on and that takes about 600 mb.
Apps to SD is a myth on Samsung devices. I have confirmed that when you move an app to SD, it just moves it to a folder called "emulated" and really doesn't free up any space. Add to that that Pocket's "store cache on SD" feature isn't working and Comixology won't store comics on the external SD and I can basically only use the SD card slot for movies and music. So, I'm wodering: Will 16 (9) GB be enough? Or do I need to take this thing back and get the 32 gb model?
My real question is: How are those of you with the 16 gb model getting by? Is your internal space filled up? Are you wishing you had the bigger model?
Ive had other tabs that were 16g and as long as I was mindful of where I stored my books and photos I never ran inyo problems. I also make sure my email only syncs 5 days. With my work and personal accounts I get way to many. For reading I use Moonreader because unlike aldiko it doesn't force me to put my books on the device. Hope this helped

I have had 16 GB tablets as well, but they generally have much more of that 16 gb available. All of the touchwiz and SPen features leave us with just over 8 GB on this thing. There's also the issue that, if we fill it up completely, it will hurt performance. So we really only have about 6-7 total out of the box.
I'm taking it back and getting the 32GB model. I love the tablet, but I need internal space.

You can use Folder Mount to move programs to the SD Card too.

Just got a 16GB at Best Buy for the same reason as OP (wanted to use financing, didn't want to wait) - haven't done anything with it yet, but I'm getting more and more nervous that I'm going to run into trouble with the storage space - I expected to be able to move more onto an external SD card, but it sounds like that's not so workable after all?
If I root, I have more options, but I'm reluctant to do that if I don't have to... Anyone else have a similar conundrum?

Not sure if this is an option for you, but I bought the 32 gb model from Newegg with my preferred account. 12 months no payment or interest. And no sales tax unless you live in CA. Taking the 16 back to Best Buy. Better too much space than not enough.

So you have the 16 GB and over 11 GB free? That I can live with, and it's about what I would have expected from the OS and bloatware... I can't decide if I want to try fot the 32 or just deal with the 15 (I'm not going to game with it, and movies/media I'd run off the SD card no matter what)...
I'm in a state of acute analysis paralysis! Someone decide for me...

you'e kind of answered it yourself tbh...Gaming will take up the majority of the space of a tablet. Applications are normally around 20mb to a max of 100mb and some rare ones larger. Games on the other hand well the high graphic games anyways are over a 1GB so space would be an issue if you were to play loads of games.
honestly if you have no intentions of gaming 16GB would be plenty for you although if you could afford the 32GB then go for it since its always nice to have loads of space.
Ofcourse only you can really decide but I'm holiding out for a 32GB because I would like to have atleast a handful of 1GB games to keep me busy when I'm at the airport waiting for my flight or on the flight itself.
I have had my 16gb nexus 5x for about 3 months now and i was wondering if it was worth getting the 16gb option? i bought my device off amazon and the total cost of the device was $2700TT and the 32gb version was about $3300TT ($100 US more as compared to the 16gb! using my exchange rate ($6TT=$1US)) of course this includes all the shipping and handling to my country (as this device is NOT available in my country, only way to get it was to import it) and due to living in Trinidad...in the Caribbean........ as i did not want to shell out the extra $600 (because i did not have it ) i settled for the 16gb model. It has become apparent... 3 months after that the 32gb option would have been the better choice and i should have saved a bit more as 10gb (yes the 16gb is only 10gb usable) seems rather unusable in my case. I have done research on the device and knowingly bought the 16gb version *facepalm* .
I just want to know, is the 16gb version popular among the community? and do any of you regret your decision of getting the 16gb instead of the 32gb?
I know it's a useless question and all but I'm just curious, I want to know if other people have had similar thoughts as me.

Take advantage of streaming services and Google Photos backup to free up space on local storage. You can also try clearing your storage cache as it tends to build up a lot over time Settings > Storage > cached data then reboot.

I don't know about the popularity in this community but in my hometown, almost every 5X is 16 gbs, as people buy it as a budget phone, they try to cut down the price for the less storage.
I am also kind of regretting this 16 gb phone. The fact that it doesn't has expandable storage, making backups are pain in the ***. I can keep multiple Roms zips in my phone. I can hardly pull any nandroid backup.
On the other hand, if I don't mod my phone, I can live with it. I remember that there is a law (or phenomenon) that whatever the storage size you'll get, your data will always expand and fill it up. Aand I've experienced and witnessed it enough to believe it.
The only solution I've discovered is either using cloud services and cutting down my data. And I was also thinking of getting a usb type c flash drive (as I'm upgrading my laptop too). So I'll get expandable storage on the go and can pull backups on it.
My cards say class 10 and 50 MB/sec. Android says they are too slow.
How fast of a one do I need?
I don't want to buy a 128 card just to find out I need root to tweak the buffer or that it doesn't work that well.

From my understanding there aren't any cards at the moment quick enough to serve the role efficiently. Just use it as an external storage until faster cards become available.
I was about to make a post concerning the best Micro SD cards do Moto Z Play, thanks for bringing that up!
I have a 128gb Samsung EVO micro sd, class 10, but it's 48mb/s and I got the same message you did, saying the card isn't fast enough and that the overall apps and system speeds could be slower.
I thought class 10 micro sd's were among the fastest and the Moto Z Play wouldn't have any trouble using it as an extension of it's internal storage, but as a matter of fact, there are indeed faster micro sds. After researching a little bit, I found Samsung EVOs with 80mb/s transfer speeds (the 48mb/s are colored orange, as the 80mb/s are little green ones):
I still haven't bought one, but I browsed through some forums and videos and people with the same problem said 80mb/s seems to do the trick and they didn't get any message complaining about the micro sd speed.
f you want even faster micro sds, try the Sandisk Extreme, with speeds up to 90mb/s:

I am afraid ? that 2 times faster may not be enough for the already challenged ATF, buggy as it is already.

Using this card with no issues. Formatted as internal storage. SanDisk Extreme 128GB microSDXC UHS-I Card with Adapter (SDSQXVF-128G-GN6MA). Got it at Amazon for 60 bucks. It is quite speedy as far as I can tell.

Do you play large music files (flac or dsf) ?
I do and getting them on such a card is via my Mac using Android File Transfer or from a SATA drive using OTG. On KK AFT did not work on large transfers. It has not been updated in many years. The OTG / drive method should be reliable but not with my 50 mb, slow card.
To boot, on the negative side of using adopted cards, you cannot pull the card in the case of a data wipe.
I will be abandoning this method.

In my use case, adaptable storage doesn't make much sense on devices with 32gb or more of internal storage. Unless you really need that much space for app installs, the limitations outweigh the benefits. My typical app load is around 8 to 10gb, so I have somewhere around another 10 available on the MZP, as long as I pull all my media into an external card. This way I know all my apps are using fast internal storage, and I don't have to wonder if a widget is available or not. And I can pull the card and use it in a PC or other device.
Now my Moto E 2 (with 8gb onboard) is a different story. But I use a hybrid card in that - 20gb as adopted and the other 40 as external. May consider this as an option when I get around to getting a card for the MZP
I took a 32gb card and combined it. It warned me too. After reading up on the function, Android evaluates what to put where. Having the card separate made it less useful only good for photos and video really. This way app data can be buffered there. Things like cloud services buffer files internally. Netflix now uses SD but that was an issue too.
Bought a new micro SD for the Moto Z Play and it works perfectly with no warnings about it's speed being slow!
It's a Samsung PRO 64 GB microSDXC Card, with 90 MB/s reading speed and 80 MB/s writing speed.
As you insert the card and format it to be part of the phone's internal storage, the system doesn't complain about the card being too slow or that it'll affect the overall app and system speed.
It's perfectly reliable for installing apps outside the device storage and keep the desired speed and all that good stuff.

It's a microSD. For these kind of cards it's quite usual that there is some percentage that fail after some time. Some cards only last for months, other years. It seems to be independent of manufacturer.
My personal advice: Whatever you store on a micro SD card, have a backup. I'd rather not use it for internal storage if it's not necessary to do so. It's slower than internal memory anyway. This is a personal opinion, you'll have or see different opinions for sure.

I agree but for me having a Mac I never want to use ATF it is buggy.
So I am left to getting large music files from an external drive over OTG.
It is so much more reliable to drop the file right to the SD and move the card to the phone.
If the adopted card fails , you need a data wipe or an update screws it up, you have a bad phone day!

I'm allowing the access via Windows filesharing (still OSX 10.6.8), and then access some drive on the computer using LAN plugin of Total Commander for Android. Works like a charm! It is a bit slower, but very convenient not having the need to put card or, put card in etc.

I do have a snow partition for older programs.
So do I need to buy FC and the plugin?
Tell me more please, cause I hate ATF soooo much. Why does Android drop it's ball like this?

I'm quite sure that file sharing via smb: is available on nearly all versions of Windows and OSX.
You may start Windows file sharing in network settings of OSX. Then you can give access to some drive in Finder.
If you google a bit, you will find help I guess.

Buy? Total Commander is free of cost, including all necessary plugins. For Windows file sharing (smb) you need the TC LAN plugin.
Edit: By "a bit slower" I meant because it usually is being used via WLAN in your intranet
Just wanted to post back here - finally got around to picking up an sd card for the MZP. Went with Samsung evo 128gb, $40 on Amazon. Since it's got plenty of space, I decided to go the same route that I did with the moto e, and do hybrid storage. Formatted 25% adopted and 75% external. Gives me an additional 30gb internal space and 90gb external storage.
Device sees the storage space fine. A couple apps I've messed with so far (Netflix and Google play music) can save to external fine, but don't recognize the additional available space in "internal", or at last don't report it as available.
I don't plan to move any apps that I use frequently or anything that I use widgets from to adopted, as the advertised max read speed is only 20mb/s. Haven't actually tested yet. But I did move a couple low use apps over. Reported storage space on both internal and adopted updated correctly (an issue I've had in the past).
So far, so good.
