Unlocking/Relocking Bootloader
Install Kernel (CMW)
Install Root
Install custom ROM
I've made this tutorial because I haven't found all, complete and put together information regarding fully debugging Xperia M phone. And now that my phone is up and running beautifully I can share my experience. This is all the info in one place, for any problems you may encounter during rooting/installing custom roms.
First you will need the following (you have the link attached to this thread):
Download and install FlashTool - Linux version is recommended. I never could use all the FlashTool options and drivers on Windows (XP and 8). Do not use Sony Flashtool, Emma - it's rubbish. Don't use any other software that promise to root/unlock bootloader with one click.
Download kernel
Download SuperSU
Download drivers for windows - if you're doing this on Windows (not recommended). For Linux you know need no additional drivers. You can also find drivers in FlashTool folder at c:/FlashTool/Drivers.
Download ROM and Apps
Download FTF original firmware
Note: Final FTF download is not necessary if you're not in bootloop or don't have any other bricking problems.
Step 1. Unlocking bootloader.
Warning: Do not use the official Sony method because this will cause your phone to enter in bootloop. In case your phone is already bootlooping see below.
- Install all the drivers and then start FlashTool.
- Power off phone
- Connect USB cable to PC. With the phone powered off keep pressing the volume up button while plugging the other end of the usb cable into the phone. Now your phone is in bootloader mode and the blue led is on.
- Press the BLU button in FlashTool
- Choose the correct phone model (Xperia M) from the list. Double click on it.
- Your phone's IMEI will be automatically be copied into FlashTool, all you need to do is hit Unlock.
- You can then disconnect your phone from PC and boot it up. Now your bootloader is UNLOCKED.
Step 2. Flashing Kernel.
- Power off phone.
- With FlashTool running connect the USB cable to PC
- Now you will have to put the phone in FLASHMODE: this time you will hold the DOWN volume button while plugging the other end of the USB cable into phone. The led will be off. Now you're in FLASH MODE.
- Click on the thunder button in FlashTool, select Fastboot
- Click on Select kernel to flash and from the open windows, on the bottom, select the .img file type.
- Choose one of the kernels you've downloaded in the above link.
- Flashing will be made automatically. You can now manual restart your phone or choose Reboot into system option from FlashTool.
- Your recovery is now installed. You can enter into recovery by pressing 2 TIMES very quickly the DOWN or UP volume button at boot when the purple led is on. Depending on the kernel, you will have to use either the Up or Down volume button.
Step 3. Rooting.
- Copy the SuperSU on SD card
- Enter recovery mode
- Install from zip
- Done
Step 4. Install custom ROM and Apps.
- Copy ROM image and Apps zip on SD card
- Enter recovery.
- Wipe all data, cache and Dalvik
- Install from zip, first ROM and then Apps.
- Optional, depending on the ROM, you can choose during Rom setup if you want to keep the kernel or install another one.
IN CASE YOU'RE IN BOOTLOOP (phone restarting over and over again or boot image stays on forever without the phone completing bootup).
This can happen if you have used the official Sony bootloader unlocking.
To fix the problem you will have to re-lock your bootloaded, flash the original firmware and then unlock the bootloader again using the correct way (FlashTool).
Relocking the bootloader is the same as unlocking (see Step 1), but instead of Unlock button you will have the Relock button.
The you will have to flash the original firmware (see download list).
- Power off and disconnect your phone from PC.
- With FlashTool runing connect USB cable into PC
- Copy the FTF file into c:/FlashTool/firmwares
- Press the thunder button in Flashtool and choose Flashmode. You will see the image you just put in /firmwares in the list. Choose it and hit FLASH.
- FlashTool will prepare the firmware. In a few minutes you will be asked to connect the phone in FLASHMODE. (Connect usb cable while presing the volume Down button)
- Now flashing will start automatically. At the end disconnect your phone and reboot.
Now, you're fresh and funky with a stock phone. To root your phone start from step one and unlock bootloader with FlashTool.
Unlock bootloader
I did all the steps to unlock the bootloader but my phone don't boot up. It stays at the animation. Can you help me?

Is it normal to late so much? :/
Please explain what exactly did you try to do and I'll do my best to help. Did you come from stock rom? Have you unlocked the bl with flashtool? Now that you're in bootloop have you tried the special method exposed above? Try to lock the bl again, load os and unlock it once again.
Hey, when i click on the blu button, xperia M is not in the list! Can You help me ?

I had a great adventure trying to get my phone to CM7 but I'm back to 3.0.1.A.0.145 now.
My journey began by following the instructions on CM website. Unfortunately, the guide did not mention about 4.0.A.2.368 being the requirement. So I ended up with a phone with my baseband not working.
So I tried to do a recovery but failed badly for a few days with fastboot on a Mac. So I decided to use flashtool and even installed Windows using Boot Camp. I even borrowed a Windows PC, but I could not get flashtool to detect my phone.
Eventually I managed to find the right right 3.0.1.A.0.145 ftf file. So I used fastboot flash the boot.img and system.img to recover the phone. It worked.
Now I really want to try to go to CM7 again. I can only find the ftf file for 4.0.A.2.368. Question is I can use the boot.img and system.img found in the ftf file package and fastboot the images directly instead of using flashtool? Then proceed with the CM7 installation.
Is this procedure workable?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1299729
Thank you for the link, XperienceD.
I have already installed the fastboot drivers and brought back my phone to 3.0.1.A.0.145. I also have an unlocked bootloader.
So from the link, it appears that I can use the fastboot method instead of flashtool.
The link does not mention about 4.0.A.2.368. So do I need to bring the phone to 4.0.A.2.368 first?
368 is mentioned on the FXP thread, so use that.
Thank you very much!
I tried to do the following.
fastboot -i 0x0fce flash boot kernel.sin
fastboot -i 0x0fce flash system system.sin
(both using files extracted from 4.0.A.2.368)
But it gets stuck at SE logo.
I also tried to use RootXperia.zip, but I cannot find root-xperia-xxx.bat anywhere. I used "install zip from SD card" to install RootXperia.zip, but when I try rebooting, I keep getting back into the menu.
So I'm back at 3.0.1.A.0.145 again
I am also trying to flash to 4.0.A.2.368 from 3.0.1.A.0.145 with no luck either....
Has anyone been able to go from 3.XXX to 4.XXX???
I really need to get this working ASAP cuz i dont get Signal in CM7 and my phone is useless...
I read in another thread and realised that I've been pressing the wrong button for flashtool. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18567861&postcount=31)
It didn't help that the 'Back' and 'Menu' buttons are reversed on the Arc and X10. So when I saw the pictorial on the flashtool, I thought I was pressing the right button And of course I made the silly assumption that you press the same button for both fastboot and flashtool
Ok, one more try tonight!

man all u should do is first download all needed files :
1- download LT15i_4.0.A.2.368_Generic Global.ftf
2- LT15.sin i can find this file at this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052067
3- You need to download flashtools 0.3.0.0
--------- after u have all those files -------------
1- Install FlashTool
2- LT15.sin place it in the /loaders sub-directory of where you extracted FlashTool to
3- Past firmware you wish to flash to the /firmwares sub-directory
4- Switch your handset off
5- Run FlashTool
6- Press the 'Flash' button and select the .ftf file you wish to flash
When prompted, connect your handset in 'flash mode' - FlashTool should explain exactly how to do this but just in case, press and hold the 'back' button while connecting the USB cable
FlashTool should automatically detect your handset and start flashing it - if it doesn't however:
Disconnect your handset (it should remain switched off)
Close FlashTool
Go to the /drivers sub-directory and run/install ggsetup-2.2.0.10.exe
Now go back to step 6 and follow the instructions once more, everything should work ok this time
When FlashTool finishes, disconnect your phone and switch it on - don't worry if it's a little slow the first time it boots after flashing
when u finish all of this
Download the latest version of CyanogenMod.
Optional: Download the Google Apps for the device.
Extract the boot.img from the CyanogenMod update.zip and copy the it to the same folder as fastboot (the /tools folder within the Android SDK folder).
Place the CyanogenMod update.zip file on the root of the SD card.
Optional: Place the Google Apps .zip on the root of the SD card also.
Disconnect the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc from the computer and power it off.
Press & hold the Menu button while connecting the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc to the computer.
On the computer, open terminal and run the following command:
fastboot -i 0xfce flash boot boot.img
fastboot -i 0xfce reboot
While the device is reboot press the Volume Rockers a few times to boot into the ClockworkMod Recovery.
Once the device boots into the ClockworkMod Recovery, use the side Volume Rocker to move around, & the Power button to select.
Optional: Select backup and restore to create a backup of current installation on the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc.
Select the option to Wipe data/factory reset.
Then select the option to Wipe cache partition.
Select Install zip from sdcard.
Select Choose zip from sdcard.
Select the CyanogenMod update.zip.
Optional: Install the Google Apps by performing steps 7 - 9 again and choosing the Google Apps update.zip.
Once the installation has finished, select +++++Go Back+++++ to get back to the main menu, and select the Reboot system now option. The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc should now boot into CyanogenMod.
Thank you, bombast3r.
I got it working!!!
I got the phone to 4.0.A.2.368 with Flashtool.
Then followed the procedure to install CM7 and viola! Very straightforward!
The thing I did wrong initially.
- Installing CM7 without going to 4.0.A.2.368 first
- Pressing the wrong button when using Flashtool
Hope this helps those who made the same mistake as myself.
Creating this thread because too many threads are being created about problems being faced while flashing via flashtools and most of the times because of improper drivers
This is gonna be a small thread
Note: This is not an unbricking thread, for that visit http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1849170
This will help you get back to stock or whatever you wish to flash via flashtools
Things you need
1. Flashtool(Latest version should be good enough)
2.Proper Stock ROM (Meant for your phone){You flash improper ROM and you might have a very expensive paperweight}
3.Your device of course
Symptoms of having improper drivers.
1.Everything is going fine and flashtool asks you to connect your phone in flashmode/fastboot mode. You connect it and green/blue light stays for a few seconds and *poof* back to red led
2. You get a notification - Error installing SEMC Flash driver
3. You connect your phone but flashtool doesnt detect(either bricked/driver problem)
OK, Now First thing you should know about installing fastboot/ADB drivers
Know your PC's configuration. Many people try to install 32 bit drivers onto 64 or vice-versa..First thing you should know is that 32bit softwares don't work on 64 bit(be it any software)
Now if you get any of the above symptoms
1. Know your PC's config(Windows version,32 bit or 64 etc)
2. Now you have two ways to install drivers
-Yourself
-Or let flashtool do it for you
I will focus on letting flashtool install your drivers.
-First, navigate to folder and execute drivers.exe : Flashtool\Drivers\Drivers.exe
-Now connect your device(normal mode) and select your phone model from the checkbox list
-Once done, check flashmode from the same checkbox list and fastboot from same checkbox list
-Let it finish
Now for Windows 8 and 8.1, you have to disable driver signature enforcement
Wont take the credit from the OP of the method so please check out this post if you are on windows 8 or 8.1
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2095087
Now if you'd rather install the drivers yourself, you can download pdanet and install or just search through the forum, plenty of guides here...
>Now just open flashtool
>Click on the flashing option(The bolt sign)
>Select the firmware
>Choose option flashmode or fastboot mode
Note : Select fastboot only if you have an unlocked bootloader
>Now when it prompts just connect you phone in flashmode or fastboot mode(depending upon what you selected
Note : Remember : fastboot mode is blue LED light while flashmode is green LED light
>Once it detects your phone, it should automatically start flashing
>Once flashing completes, disconnect phone and Enjoy....

Anyways, did you flash the correct kernel? Or did you just try to flash a recovery?

St.Jimmy,
I am a first time member, joined only yesterday (that is after my tail caught fire!); sorry to be still in the wrong place. Could moderators please relocate my post to the right location? Thanks a million to this wonderful site.
Thanks for the reply. I think installing CWR required flashing a "boot.img" file. The device gave up its ghost after flashing the boot.img file. As of now, there seems to be a slight improvement -- there is a red LED indicator that has come on when put to charging; it is faint, but it is there alright! Any chances of resurrection or is my phone really gone to its Heavenly Kingdomo?
I suggest u first charge it for 1-2 hours and then try using flashtool

I can now sometimes connect in flashboot mode; flashtool initially recognizes the phone but when I try to flash a stock ROM, asks the phone to be connected (as if it has not already recognized the phone)! HELP PLEASE!!

might have a solution for the recovery if the fastboot is working
download minimal adb and fast boot from here
place boot.img in minimal adb and fast boot folder after installation
Put your phone in fastboot( hold power up key and plug usb)
open minimal adb and fast boot application
it will open a cmd window
type fastboot flash boot boot.img
after that type fastboot reboot
your phone will restart now
PS: your phone is refusing to boot because the recovery is corrupted
What if you fastboot a custom kernel with inbuilt recovery and then flash a Rom with the recovery?
Since you have fastboot working

You may try the method by @androidtweaker mentioned above as it is similar

Androidtweaker1: Thanks. Cannot connect in fastboot mode. The blue LED comes on but the device is not recognized (adb drviers etc. no problem, all correctly installed, all set).
kedar: cannot connect in the fastboot mode. See reply to Androidtweaker1 above. Thanks
kingvortex: Thanks. I was trying to follow the following tutorial:
After downloading Z_DooMLoRD_AdvStkKernel_FW-4.3-101_v12.zip, place it in external SD Card of your smartphone
Now extract Z_DooMLoRD_AdvStkKernel_FW-4.3-101_v12.zip on your PC’s desktop and copy boot.img
Paste this file inside the folder where you have installed Minimal ADB and Fastboot
Now turn off your smartphones completely
Plug in mobile’s USB in cable in PC port only
Hold Volume up button and plug in USB cable in mobile’s port
LED will turn blue (If it does not remain blue for long, then read Optional part in bootloader unlocking method explained above
Once you are successfully in fastboot mode, then you can continue
Now type Fastboot flash boot boot.img and press Enter
It will flash boot.img file on your device
Now unplug the device and boot it up
As soon as you see purple colored LED, start pressing volume up and down buttons repeatedly, until you are in CWM mode
In CWM Mode, select “Install Zip”
Now select the storage you have put that zip file in and just confirm its installation
There are two ways to navigate in this CWM recovery
You can navigate with volume buttons and make a selection with power button
Another way of navigating is by swiping your finger on empty area in recovery
Swipe up to move up, swipe down tp move down, swipe right to make a selection and swipe left to go back
After installation is complete, go back to main menu and reboot your smartphone
Congrats! You have successfully installed CWM custom recovery on your smartphones
I have a similar situation and I'm stuck.
Q: is working the minimal adb if in the settings was not checked the debug mode?
In my case I can go in fastboot mode each time but not help.
When I try to go in flash mode, there is strange because the flashtool say it it connected in flash mode , even the PCC say this, but the LED it's not green, is off, first is try to go green after get red and after off, but the software say is in flash mode.
I can try to flash any ftf, it's working without erors but my phone it's still dead after restart, even SONY logo is not appear, just vibrate once.
Other strange think, each time when I made a new flahing, there is a status message of device, it say that the version of ftf is 230 even if last time I was tring to flash 101 for ex and was finished without errors. Always show the same ftf version like nothing is changing inside. The only thing can change is the BL, lock or unlock and I can see this in the status device, this is made in fastboot mode and there I have the blue LED.
Can anybody give me some ideeas to fix this?
have the log of flahtool attached.
Thanks.

Hello Yureka Users,
The factory image (fastboot flashable zip) and debuggable boot image are now available on Cyanogen Support page.
For the convenience of the users, we have also created a package containing required tools for flashing and a one-click flashing script.
These flash tools are available for download here - ( Windows - Linux - Mac )
There are detailed step by step instructions written for each OS ( Windows - Linux - Mac )
Flashing the whole package will get your phone back to factory state and WILL WIPE all data on your phone. (Except any data on the external microSD card, if you have one).
As newer updates come out in coming months, the support page will be updated with newer factory images.
In the spirit of the community, the flash tools package, and the script are up on github, and we welcome anyone who wants to improve on the flashing scripts/tools.
Cheers,
Team YU

if i will flash this. will i revert back to stock recovery and locked bootloader ?
i come to know that lolipop update will be flashable only on stock recovery. is it true ?
does this method apply to fastboot files of cm12 as well?
Cause many users who directly flashed this cm12 fastboot files are now having hard bricked devices

First of all you need to know your device's bootloder is locked or unlocked for that type *#*#7378423#*#* in dial pad then go to service info >configuration and check for bootloder unlock allow
If it say yes then it's unlock
If it says no then it is locked
Do as follow for unlocking the bootloder
You need your device's IMEI number and a password for unlocking your bootloder
You can get your password by following link
Do step by step
http://developer.sonymobile.com/unlockbootloader/unlock-yourboot-loader/
1)switch off your device and open flashtool(download from following link)
2)select the unlock bootloder and connect your phone with flash mode by keep pressing vol. Down button and connect the cable LED light will turn green and then it will off
3)enter Your device's IMEI number and the password you got from Sony
4)click on unlock
Now your bootloder is unlocked so now can install custom recovery like XZdualrecovery,TWRP,CWM (unfortunately CWM is not supported in 5.1.1)
For installation of recovery you need to download full Rom from Xperifrim or other source and convert it into Ftf file
You need 1) kernel which have recovery pre-installed like doomlord's kernal for D5303 device for Android 4.3
2)For recovery which work with it just download latest version of XZdualrecovery for T2 ultra from thread and download the Release file (there are 2 file which are located there one is release and second is installer)
Download it on phone and move it on place whare you can find it easily
1) Now switch off your phone open flashtool
2) select flash sign and select fastboot mode
3) Now connect your phone with computer in fastboot mode by keep pressing vol.up button and connect the cable and LED light will turn blue
4)select doomlord's kernel file for flashing (it'll be on img format so select img from file type)
And flash it
5)Now disconnect your phone and boot it. When Sony logo appear and then keep pressing vol.down button alternatively it will boot you to CWM recovery
Now touch is not working... You can move upper option by volume Up button and downward option by volume down button for selecting the option press power button
Select install >install from SD card or external SD(where you placed a file)
Select flash and recovery will install then for back to exit there is (/) sign which can bring you to previous menu then exit from recovery by pressing vol.up button and power button holding together until it vibrate 3 times now your phone is power offed
6)Now click on flash button on flashtool and select flash mode
Then choose your latest 5.1.1 rom and now do as instruction or your data will lost
1) first you choosed a rom to flash now it will show a dialogue box that how many files are in that rom for flash now on right top you have 2 check box ( data and cache) uncheck both of them.
2) under that you have Exclude box which have check boxes too
Now check all boxes(system, some other things) but make sure only kernal remain uncheck
Now click on flash button
It will ask for connect your phone in flash mode by holding vol.down button and connect the cable
Now it will flash only kernal file all other files will remain same
Disconnect your phone and boot it until Sony logo appear and keep pressing vol.down button alternatively .... It will boot to TWRP recovery which is Easy to use and touch is also working now for get back to normal boot just select last option reboot and it will your
(while you want to enter into recovery keep pressing vol down button alternatively until LED blink green or some other colour.after it blinked you can't boot to recovery)
Hit thanks button if this helped you... And ask if you stuck at somewhere
This was simple tutorial and you are doing this all at your own risk I am not responsible for any damage of your device.
If it says bootloader unlock allowed YES then you can unlock it and use custom roms if it says bootloader unlock allowed NO there is nothing you can do to change it and you can only use stock or stock based roms if you won't or can't unlock bootloader root is still available and so is recovery
