just shooting from the hip here, you don't have a backup of your previous rom? if you do, and can still get to recovery, I'd wipe everything and flash that. Baring that, you could TRY to unroot it, but I wouldn't guarantee anything. Maybe someone else has better info than me
Yea he didn't do a back up, smh, so he attempted to unroot last night and he tried flashing stock 4.3 but Odin gave him a failed. Then asked him what android version he was previously on and he says maybe 4.2 or 4.3 now phone is saying connect to lies and run recovery and still can get to download mode, told him I will try to fix it and leave it alone, any help would be appreciated on what stock rom I should flash
try kies, there is an option for "emergency recovery", then just reroot
Do I need to put phone download mode and run recovery in kies? also to go back to stock which stock rom do i flash?

no, just turn the phone on, then connect to USB... kies will determine the firmware...
Ok cool when I turn phone on it shows the connect to kies to recovery but recovery ask for some kind of code

ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME:SGH-T999

You don't need to be in odin mode to use Kies, but since you can put the phone in odin mode, go to samfirmware and download the latest firmware, then flash it. You still might have to fix the EFS though.
ok cool thank you,, ok i flashed stock rom, everything went good, but i am stil having that image on screen still, which i attached earlier, any help on how to remove that image on screen? will rooting the device and flashing rom remove that image from screen?
ok after searching on google found out its factory mode image thats on the screen, i tried doing this(http://www.droidforums.net/threads/how-to-exit-factory-mode-to-user-mode-in-s3-help.239945/) but folder is empty and no back up, would like to know if there is a fix and can someone help please.thank you

So is this what you did?
su
echo -n ON > /efs/FactoryApp/factorymode
Are you absolutely certain you typed it in correctly? What did it say after you entered the command?
You said the folder is empty, did you actually look at the /efs folder and it was empty??? If so, I'm not sure if theres much you can do tbh. There is device specific information there so it is unique for every device. You might be able to get some stuff back (non-unique type things), but I don't know about the rest.....DRM keys and more.....
If the folder is empty, how did you determine this? What app did you use to check it out?
You said you flashed your firmware via Odin right? Not Mobile Odin? Big difference so i just want to make sure.
It would be a big help if you could elaborate on your OP. What exactly did he flash, and how did he flash it? What was the original problem? What were the efs issues you eluded to? And more importantly what did someone edit and supposedly fix?
The only problem I have ever seen related to the efs on this device is the one you originally posted about, the FactoryMode window. Aside from that very rare issue, I have never seen any problem with the efs on the Qualcomm S3's. Many people automatically go there because OTHER devices store different information there and they expect it to be the exact same for some reason. Anyway, what I am trying to say here, is other than getting rid of FactoryMode, I can't think of anything else anyone would need to touch on that partition. This is why it is very important to know what the other person "fixed", and how.
In the meantime, go to Settings > About Device > Status, and verify the IMEI is there and that it matches the one printed on the sticker under the battery. (Am I correct in guessing all of this started with some sort of IMEI issue?) If the IMEI is anything but correct (missing, zeroed, incorrect, etc), PM me directly. Do not worry about posting again until we solve that. Chances are, if the IMEI is the problem, fixing it will solve the rest too. Unfortunately, we are not allowed to post, link or discuss that in the public forum, so I can only help via PM if that is the problem.

Hi everyone.
As i read on so many posts, my SGN one night just drop the signal. The day after, still with no signal, i checked that had no IMEI and unknown baseband.
I had tried so many "solutions" for this to work and still nothing.
It came (when i bought it, second handed from ebay) with slimbeam rom installed. I did nothing weird to it, just simply drop signal and lost IMEI and baseband. I flashed 4.0.4, 4.2.2 from google developers web, i changed the radio for a DOCOMO one, but still nothing.
As my english is not too good, i attached a photo that explain how is my phone actually.
Please, any help will be much appreciatted as i got $300 spend on this Galaxy Nexus.
Why would you use a docomo radio? Is it a docomo phone? Have you tried flashing any other radios?
Check to make sure the contact pins that read the sim card are not damaged.

My problem isn't with the sim card, it's with no IMEI and baseband at all. Thanks anyway.
I think i just killed it.
I was trying another "solution" i found on the web, and now the phone don't turn on.
I installed an APK from the market called GSII_REPAIR and after it says to reboot the phone, now it doesn't turn on.
I read that this app is for the galaxy S2 but appear on the search for my problem's fix.

First I would put it in odin dl mode and flash stock, that should get the phone to boot again. I understand your english isn't that good but can you explain what you have tried. Im basically wondering if you have tried to play with the nv_data.bin file in the /factory directory as this may be able to make the phone get some functionality back.
The reason for the the possible softbrick is cause the gsII repair was probably deleting and replacing the wrong files ... I would probably say that this is a corrupt EFS directory and would work on the techniques out there to repair that ... either that or you have the same problem I have where it is a hardware issue and there is no real fix possible .... One method that may work the best is to try and use QPST and manually input your IMEI into nv_data.bin file ... many possibilities I just don't know what you have tried

I try to turn it on ODIN mode, and recovery mode and doesn't turn on at all.
In the same post that i saw the app, say that i can do it manually by messing with those files (nv_data.bin) but at the end mentions a nv_data file that i havent saw on the factory folder. because of that i try with the app.

so if you can't get it into odin or bootloader you have either hard bricked your phone or the battery is dead ... usually you can still get it to trickle charge if you plug it in ... if the nv_data.bin file was not in the /factory partition then i would think in some way the EFS has been corrupted or you weren't using a file manager with root access since the file is a hidden file ... biggest thing now is getting it to boot which I can only think of flashing through the bootloader or odin but i don't know everything that is possible ... someone else would probably have to help you if you can't get into either of those
I rooted my note 2 this saturday however as I did so it messed up my phone.
I created a topic here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41721811#post41721811
I received replies however it wasn't help that I could use for someone with my rooting capablities.
The original problem
http://forum.xda-developers.com/newr...e=1&p=32466314
I followed the directions outlined in the topic I linked to above to root my Samsung Galaxy Note 2.
However once the rooting process was done my phone came back on and it was completely unable to read the sim card.
Not only that it wouldn't stay on. After 5 minutes the screen would go black however the power would still be on as I can see my led light flashing that I'm receiving messages and alerts.
To hopefully fix this I went ahead and unrooted my phone using the same application in the topic linked to above and the results are that it still won't read my sim and it the power issue is the same.
Can someone please help me out with this and provide the instructions I need to return my phone back to what it once was.
Then can someone also provide a reliable way of rooting the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 that won't cause my phone to become unresponsive.
Thanks

Whats happening now
I am not very advanced at all when it comes to flashing and rooting.
It's hard for me to just go and flash my phone that's why I had used that simple program that I linked to in the OP.
I just looked in the settings on my phone it it says
Mobile Network Type = Unknown
Service State = Out of service
My phone number = Unknown
IMEI = Unknown
IMEISV = Unknown
Device Status = Modified
I could really use some exact instructions on what stock rom for the note 2 is best and step by step instructions on how I flash it on.
I could also use some help with finding step by step instructions on how to root my note 2 successfully without running into this problem again.
Thanks

and my last post in my previous topic
So I followed the instructions http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2052779 there to try and un-root my phone however I am still with the same results.
The phone reads my IMEI number as unknown and it still cannot read my sim card at all. My power comes on but once it goes inactive it stays off and to turn it back on I have to take the battery out, replace it, then power back on only for it to do the same thing and the process to be repeated once more.
I could really use some step by step instructions say for instance is there another way I can go about restoring stock ware on the phone. If so where are the links to the programs I need to download and what is the sequence I use those programs exactly to restore my phone back to stock. What commands and instructions need to be done within those programs.
I would like to root my phone once it's been returned back to a working functioning status as I cannot make calls or anything right now. I was looking at putting Cyaneogen Mod on it however if there is a better software I would appreciate if you could point it out. What programs do I use and how do I use those programs exactly so that I don't end up with the same result that I have right now where I
m unable to do anything with my phone.
I really hope someone helps me at the level I'm asking. I know it's a lot but I will be really grateful for the assistance.

Please don't forget about me. I really need help here.
Ok rooting is so stupid simple that id never even thought about using one of those root toolbox things. First you get the root file on your pc. I believe this is specific for your carrier and exact model of your phone. You can find this file on in the specific forum for model and carrier on this very site. Then you get odin also on your pc, also found on this site. Then follow 2-3 very simple instructions on how to flash it using odin. The exact instructions escape me since ive only done once or twice because I have never needed to go back to stock. The instructions will be found wherever odin and the root file are. Once everything listed is on your pc, from start of root process to finished is maybe 30seconds max.
Ive seen ALOT of issues where someone has screwed the pooch with those toolboxes.
You may have flashed the wrong root which has in turn wiped your carrier settings. If you can atleast turn your phone on and get to your app drawer then go into superuser or supersu app whichever app was installed and try removing root.
As far as all those settings are concerned there maybe a way to re inpit the necessary info. Like I said before, find the note specific to your carrier forum here and do a bit of reading. Thats how I stumble upon everything I know about my phone.
Another thing you could try is if your phone is still in usable state as far aswifi is concerned you could download goomanager (recovery installalation and rom tool) use that to install a new recovery, first thing id try from is a factory reset which can be done in recovery. Choose that option and reboot and see of your setting are good. If not then flash all new stock rom. With a new recovery you can flash an all stock plus rooted properly version of 4.1.2. The stock version is around 850megs so best to do that fron the pc as well. Once the download is done you can transfer that to the goomanager folder on internal memory load the app and choose the option flash roms, then check the box for the stock rom and click option order and flash on bottom and phone should reboot to recovery. Once in recovery there options for factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache and then flash roms. Choose to factory reset again then wipe the caches then choose flash option till it where the rom is and click done it will do the rest.
Hope this gives you what you need. If there is something ive left out please someone else chime in here.

Maybe try and flash back to factory image first. You can use Odin for clean factory image. You will lose all your personal files but at this point I would start from a fresh new flash.

Hi, I recently got ATT note 2. I tried to root it and did the CF root from chainware and also tried galaxynote2root.com root. both didnt work, well it gave me root but I cant install a recoveery. I flashed it multiple times like 10 I think because my binary coutner says 10. idk what to do.Can someone help. plz post links if i need to download something. I do have all the drivers and stuff. its just that no recovery. im running 4.1.2 jelly bean
Not in any way am I trying to be rude or condescending. ...but
You need to stop and read the steps again. ...before you accidentally do damage to the device partitions or worse. ..
Custom recovery images are pushed to the device via Odin when the stock recovery still exists. ...and if done incorrectly. ..you can brick the device.
Please explain the method you are using to attempt the recovery flash. .and we can help correct the problem.
But by all means. ..don't attempt another flash of recovery until the problem is found.
Recovery is essential to do exactly as the term states. ..."recovery"...and without it. ..you will be in trouble with no way back but JTAG service.
Read and read again the recovery steps. ..and go slow here...

well first i downloaded the galaxynote2root zip file from the website. it gave the odin and a file to flash. then I put phone in download mode and flashed. successfully got root. I think its because I have the latest software. 4.1.2 everyone got root in 4.1.1 and the old one doesnt work anymore. what did u use to root.? I did all the steps exactly what max did. and he got root like that and installed cwm. i followed video and blog post. this is the video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFHZ535L7is
Is it better to use the toolkit that to use this method? toolkit users have had less problems.
ALSO NOW ITS DOWNLOADING SOME UPDATES WHEN I CONNECT TO WIFI. im already rooted so does that mean im going to brick if i update so im not even using the phone now plzz someone help me
thanks for reply
FIRST thing you need ro do is check and make sure you have a recovery.
Imo the number one reason noobs break there phones is with out realizing it they borked their recovery and try to root , flash a custom rom, OR take an ota.
No recovery = no ota or any other flashing.
Check you recovery by:
Power off> press vol up, menu, and home.
This is done all at once. As soon as you see the text appear in the top right corrner release. It takes a bit of practice but its not a biggie.
Now.. do you see recovery or are you in a boot loop?
If you have a boot loop while trying to get into recovery...it means u no have recovery!!!
Secondly Stop flashing root!!
Lol pick a single root method that has been verified to work by others. And stick to it.
Its sooo important to read.
In fact with some phones one variant of root wont work if you have an update and hence a different android version.
So you need to read.
If you have recovery click factory restore.
You can do this from the os or.. I prefer going into recovery and hitting factory restore. iTS THE SAME.
If you have a boot loop while trying to get into recoveru

Go do the kies efr thing as I explain it my tut. Get your phone back to a nice clean start.
Kies efr IS THE FASTEST AND SAFEST way for newbs to get back to stock.
Newbs should NOT be using odin unless they are 100% sure they know what they are doing and are comfortable doing so. My efr tutorial in my sig will teach you how to use KIES EFR (Emergency Firmware Recovery)
I prefer to send people the gn2 toolkit.
Its easy and also has plenty of options.
Just remember to uninstall kies first.
There are numerous ways to root.

ok thanks a lot, i flashed twrp recovery now running jellybam rom, i was wondering if it supports transparent status bar? not just in one app in all of them.
The answer to that question is found in the respective thread for the rom you are using. .
Check there first. ...
General searches also yield great results. ...g
im going to switch to pac man rom soon, bc xda banned jellybam for not giving credits i think. anyway whats a good kernel to use? now im using the one that came with jellybam. im guessing u experminented a lot and give me some suggestions. i dont wanna overclock just looking for smooth performance.
For pac.....
Use the preloaded kernel ..
It is optimized for the build and you can get support ...
If you change kernels ...you may not get support ...g
I wasn't paying attention to the model numbers I was looking at and tried to install an N7100 ROM on my SGH-T889. I installed it, fudged my IMEI and tried to rollback to the previous ROM I had in place but it didn't resolve my IMEI unknown issue. I tried to restore my backups, nothing. I have tried multiple stock firmware versions for my phone I have found on here but ODIN fails on every single one, most of them sitting at boot.img, MD5 hash invalid or getting stuck on system. I am unable to get into recovery, only the download screen. I think because the ROM I tried was 4.3 it messed up my bootloader and wont let me go back to 4.1.2 but I cant put anything on it at this point. Ive tried multiple versions of ODIN, different USB ports, cables, rebooted my PC and Im out of ideas at this point. I apologize in advance because I'm sure the answer is out there I just cant find it and I've been looking for a few days.

Its possible that when you tried to flash 4,3 rom you also ended up with the stupid KNOX security thing. Which means you cant go back to older roms only 4.3. (as far as i know, im still a bit of a noob with this stuff)

I did indeed, although The modem I tried now that I am looking back through my downloads I believe was for the N7000 model. I will look through it and try to find it. Thanks for your reply.
I seem to have gotten myself out of the hole Ive dug. Hopefully if anyone else gets this deep, this will help. Given the fact that I erroneously flashed a 4.3 ROM I screwed myself over for going back but I was able to flash the latest firmware from sammobile (4.3) The file should be named T889UVUCMK7_T889TMBCMK7_TMB. I unzipped it, reinstalled ODIN 3.09 and tried a few times with negative results. However, Ive seen several conflicting posts about Kies, some say delete it completely, some say use it so I reinstalled it BUT I ended the process in task manager before I connected my phone and opened ODIN. I flashed only the firmware in the PDA section, no .pit files, no .phone files. It completed after about 10 minutes and I now have a stock 4.3 note 2, wifi capable and data service enabled. My download screen still shows custom binary download8 counts) which I know I can revert using triangle away but current binary and system status both show samsung official. The Knox warranty void still shows:1. Tmobile has sent me a replacement due to my negligence and ignorance in reaching out to them and I have 2 phones, the one I just fixed and the warrantied replacement on 4.1.2 sitting next to it. Should I just return the replacement back to them and tell them I fixed my issue or should I send them the old phone and keep the refurb? Im not familiar with the procedures phone companies follow when it comes to inspecting phones that are sent back to them but it seems to me that it is an expensive gamble because if they get my old one and see the Knox tripped, I imagine they would claim its out of warranty and charge me some astronomical amount.
I have obtained a Sprint s4 mini. From what I can find, the current kernel is SE secure enforcing.
The exact build number is KOT49H.L520_4.4.2_0016
Build date is Oct 7 2014
I am not new here, I know that all known root methods are now bust. What other options are there?
Searching seems to be pretty difficult for this device. All searches for bootloader and recovery come up for the i9190 / i9195
If I use Kies or Odin to flash a previous recovery image, will that brick the device? Also in the settings, it says Secure Boot Status - Type: Samsung
Guess that is referring to the Knox enforcing
The particular image I had in mind to flash with Odin is SPR-L520VPUAMK2-20131115204826
Will it work? Or am I screwed?
Well no one was able to answer my question, so I had to figure it out on my own. Hopefully the following information will be of help to someone else without spending 36+ hours digging through the internet for answers.
You CAN fix your phone it you are on the NJ1 kernel. This is NOT a guide to fixing a bricked phone, although it may fix that too.
If you are on the NJ1 kernel, there are no root methods currently available. You MUST be on NE3 or lower. I also attempted to flash the custom recovery through Odin, but after a reboot it was as if I did nothing. No Knox flag, no warranty trip, no custom recovery.
Here is what I did to get custom recovery and root:
READ THIS BEFORE ATTEMPTING STEP 1.
This is only for the Sprint variant of the S4 Mini. Model number SPH-L520
Your Warranty could be voided. Proceed if you like. (More info on steps 5 and 6)
I had a horrible time getting the downloads from Sammobile. You WILL have to create an account and login to download files. I could not find any working links for the firmware below except for this site. Register a user name and password, DO NOT UNCHECK THE BOX that says receive emails from Sammobile OR YOU WILL NOT GET YOUR REGISTRATION EMAIL. On the Register page it is at the bottom. After you register, check your email and click on the link to complete the registration.
Close all your windows that are open to sammobile.
You are going to want to download Internet Download Manager in order to download files from Sammobile. After many many attempts to download the firmware from Sammobile, all tries failed. YOU ARE GOING TO NEED IDM to get a reliable download.
Download IDM ---> https://www.internetdownloadmanager.com/download.html
Install it and follow these directions to enable resume downloads in IDM ---> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2765456
If you do not do the steps above, you most likely will have failed download after failed download.
Even after setting this up, the firmware download failed on me twice. I deleted it from the download list in IDM and started it again.
IDM integrates well with Internet Explorer. Kinda buggy with Chrome. I would suggest using IE for the rest of this Tutorial.
Ok, now that you have that squared away, move on to step 1

1) Flash your phone back to NE3. You can get that here ---> http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/download/31482/L520VPUBNE3_L520SPTBNE3_SPR/ (click Regular Download, then on new page right-click Confirm Download and click SAVE AS. After that the IDM window should pop up. Just Start Download)
Also go ahead and download download the NJ1 in case things get rough. List of all firmwares here ---> http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SPH-L520/
2) Download and install the Samsung drivers ---> http://www.mediafire.com/download/a4hd8y0c1iakysk/Samsung-Usb-Driver-v1.5.49.0.exe
Download Odin 3.09 ---> http://androidhost.org/PVAIv
Unzip Odin to a folder or desktop. Do not run it from in the zip folder.
3) Run Odin 3.09.
Reboot your S4 Mini SPH-L520 into download mode. Turn phone off > Hold Volume Down, Home Button, and Power Button all at the same time. Wait for the phone to buzz and the pop up on the screen. Release the buttons and press Volume Up to confirm.
Now plug in your phone to your computer. It might take a few seconds for the drivers to install. Wait until Odin shows blue color in the first bar on the left side. Should say 0:[COM3] (the COM number will be different depending on your computer and the USB port you plugged it into)
VERY VERY IMPORTANT! Make sure that the AUTO-REBOOT and F. RESET TIME boxes ARE checked. Make sure that the RE-PARTITION box is NOT checked.
4) Unzip the NE3 download from earlier. Click on the AP button in Odin and navigate to where you unzipped NE3. It should be a .MD5 type of file
Give Odin a few mins to check the file. It may appear that Odin has hung up, just be patient.
After Odin has run the check, it should say ok in the little window on the bottom left. Now click START and wait.
DO NOT bump the phone, the laptop, the usb cord, and MAKE SURE THE BATTERY DOES NOT FALL OUT!!!
After Odin is done flashing, it will reboot the phone. After the initial reboot, the phone will reboot itself once more. Be patient
Now wait for the phone to completely boot up.
5) After you have got back to ME3, you can follow this guide to root it ---> http://androidxda.com/root-samsung-galaxy-s4-mini-sprint-sph-l520
You already have most of the files you need. Just follow the instructions and download what you do not have already.
By the way, in Odin the AP button and the PDA button are the same
(This method should not trip the Knox counter, but I am unsure. Mine was already tripped before all of this)
OPTIONAL (this will trip the Knox counter and lose warranty status)
6) Now you can use this guide to install the custom recovery ---> http://techbeasts.com/2014/05/04/in...-root-sprint-samsung-galaxy-s4-mini-sph-l520/
Again, you already have most of the files you need. DL what you don't have.

I am planning on instaling CM11 ---> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2669991
This ROM apparently needs a specific recovery in order to work properly. I installed that one instead.
MAKE A BACKUP IN THE RECOVERY OF THE STOCK ROM BEFORE FLASHING ANY CUSTOM ROMS, or else be sorry later.
This is about as simplified as I could get it. Hope this helps out those of you that were as confused as I was.
I will not be providing support. Simply do not have the time. There is more than enough info here to help you figure out what to do.

Can you help me to backup your first partition on your phone and send to me. You can use EFS Professional on xda.
Hmm....I installed the NJ1 update through Odin. And then flashed the CF auto root (or maybe it was the recovery.tar) with no issues. I did this when NJ1 was first released.

I was unsure about it considering all the changes with SE Secure and Knox. Always pays to be safer than sorry. I could not find any reports of this anywhere after hours of reading and searching. Thanks for confirming though. :good:

I am sorry, I have been really busy. What exactly are you trying to do? Asking someone to backup sensitive data from their phone and share it to a stranger can be alarming.
At least tell us what is going on or why you need the backup.
worked
