I have not flashed in a while, I have twrp installed and have been running Darth stalker for a while. It's android 4.1.1, so I'm due for an upgrade.
All the newer roms want me to be in v4.3 first, I'm a little lost and confused. Can someone help point me in the right direction?
You only need to have full 4.3 firmware if you are planning to flash a 4.4.2 touchwiz ROM.. Aosp/cm you are good to go. To flash 4.3 firmware just download it from the sticky in development and flash it with Odin. After that, flash your custom recovery of choice (twrp works best in most cases) and flash your ROM
Thank you! I've never been a flash a holic.... didn't want to run the risk of messing something up. Trying to get some new life in my s3, my whole family upgrade on iPhone 6 and I feel a little left out

A noob question...
4.4.2 just arrived for nordic countries. Since I have a custom 4.3 ROM I have to flash the new 4.4.2 with ODIN, that much I understand.
My question is: WHEN there comes a custom ROM made from stock 4.4.2 will I be able to flash that from recovery or do I still have to flash the stock 4.4.2 first?
I want to know if I should be patient or just go for it... I really don´t want to go back to all Note 2 stuff if I know there will be a flashable deodexed, rooted, stock ROM in due time. My current setup is too Note 3-ish to just let go...
Best regards
Manneman
I figure instead of pulling my hair out for three days wading through various methods and likely brick, I'd swallow my pride and ask.
Here's where I'm at: I rooted and flashed Carbon rom way back when, everything was working alright, but with time, things are slowly starting to come apart. Yesterday, it's come to the point it can't be ignored. My nightly is ridiculously out of date, but I just haven't wanted to mess with it anymore. I'm about ready to get a new phone and I want everything back to fresh stock to give to a family member. I don't know where to start and what instructions are applicable or out of date. Model: I747, Android version: 4.4.2
I think I'm done experimenting with the rooting business, it's been a ride. If I could get some clear instructions on getting this phone back to stock, I'd be eternally grateful.
Help me xda community, you're my only hope.
What bootloader is on your phone? This is important to know before trying to get back to a stock ATT ROM.

Hey there, thanks for replying! Bootloader says I747UCUEMJB.
Since you are on an mjb bootloader, that means you had the ATT stock 4.3 ROM on the phone.
Unfortunately, ATT never realased a stock 4.3 ROM or 4.4.2 ROM. These were only available via OTA.
There was a thread where a stock mjb ROM was compiled for flashing in Odin, but for some members, the flash resulted in a bricked phone.
I had a feeling that might be the case. What are my options here?
I would install a custom recovery and flash a custom rom. There are custom ROMs based on stock Samsung ROMs.

This is the way to go. Since you most likely already have a custom recovery (assumed since you are running Carbon but verify first though), then it is just a matter of getting a new ROM. There are several custom TW ROMs based on 4.3 MJB. If you really want KK, you can flash the NE4 bootloader and modem along with a custom NE4 TW KK ROM. Please keep in mind that with both MJB and NE4 (KK) if you try to revert bootloaders, you will brick.
I am personally running S3RX 4.3 and have few to no issues other than what most people experience on stock anyway. Just have not had the time to move forward to KK as of yet.

Okay, so the bootloader is 4.3, but the Android version in settings says 4.4.2, how does that fit together? Just trying to understand what all this works.
Recovery is currently ClockworkMod. Since I'm planning on giving it to family, I'd like something that is as stable as possible, nothing fancy needed. What ROM would fulfill those needs?

Sounds like you are running a custom KK ROM in order to be using the 4.3 bootloader. A stock KK ATT ROM will not run on a 4.3 bootloader.
Before flashing to a custom KK ROM, make sure you are running the latest CWM. Carbon is a good ROM and should have reached a milestone build.

You are running the official 4.3 bootloader but an AOSP custom ROM. In the case of AOSP ROMs you can typically do this. As mention by audit13, if it was a custom ROM based off TW AT&T stock, you would only be able to run a modified TW 4.3 ROM.
New galaxy user, here its a s3 for ATT 4.4.2 i747CUCFNE4. I have rooted using the Cf Auto-Root method.
Along the lines of trying to flash a new task manager apk, (for I had to factory reset my phone because the original task manager was missing) I came across a thread that had s5 apps (settings apk) and tried flashing this apk(don't laugh I know.) Then I couldn't get my phone to boot through the standard setup wizard. So I tried booting into recovery and factory resetting my phone clearing cache, dalvik, and partition.
My biggest problem arose when I chose to format system from ghe recovery.
I know all this can be fixed with odin but I can't find a 4.4.2 os link, I have read I can't simply downgrade my os. A link to a 4.4.2 stock rom thread would be greatly appreciated. I also have the Ktoonsez kernel installed if that makes any difference.
AT&T never released a full 4.4.2 ROM. AT&T released 4.3 and 4.4.2 via OTA updates only.
Since you are on the NE4 bootloader, do not flash anything that will attempt to downgrade the bootloader or the modem. A mismatched modem/bootloader combination may cause other problems.
Have a look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2789917
Ok I just reviewed your link in your response but just to be clear I'm starting where it says step 3: stock deodex and root and finishing the walkthrough from there?
And also will this reset me to my factory kernel?? Either or it doesnt matter to me I'm still trying to find one that I find suitable.
And I appreciate the speedy response you've been a huge help.
If you just want to get your phone up and running, I would flash Philz and then CM11. Confirm the bootloader and modem then decide if a stock ROM would be best.
I am always paranoid when it comes to flashing bootloaders on the s3 so I prefer to know exactly whan my phone is running.
I have never used the thread I linked because I no longer have an s3 i747m. Infact, I haven't had my s3 for several months.
Ok and my last question is you can flash Philz and CWM 11 through odin?
Nevermind I see it now greatly appreciated
I hope it all goes well. With CM11, you will also need to flash Gapps via CWM as CM11 does not include certain apps such as the Play store.
Now odin wont recoginize or open any of my rom files. Li see the rom im trying to flash by name but when i click open it only opens the next folder instead of initiating the flash. I really just need someone who has a 4.4.2 stock rom in md5 format.(edited or not.)
As a last effort if i get no answer im going to try to downgrade to another os and reupdate to 4.4.2 right after. Ive been searching for days now all i see are guides from how to upgrade to a different os . If it does include 4.4.2 they only posted the update and not the entire rom.
And when i do find someone posting a full rom for 4.4.2 its either not for 747i or its not a md5 file so someone plz help me.

DO NOT downgrade to a bootloader older than your NE4 -- doing so will cause a hard brick.
You did mean i747 instead of 747i, didn't you?
Odin is designed to not flash any stock rom that would install a bootloader than the one on your phone. this is to save you from hard bricking your phone. Since you are on 4.4.2, any stock rom in a .tar.md5 format has an older bootloader than your NE4. As far as I know, the only stock NE4 rom on the forums is in a .zip format for flashing from recovery, it was posted by enewman17. (The thread audit13 linked.) If you tried to flash an older bootloader and baseband package through recovery you will probably hardbrick the phone.
Otherwise, there are roms based on TW in the forums: S3Rx, TMS3KK, Likewise, and others. Some use the stock kernel, others give you an option from their Aroma install. The iBubbler's kernel in a couple of these roms is reported to be excellent.
I'm guessing you pulled your S5 apk from either the S3Rx or Likewise thread.
I appreciate everyones feedback and guideance. Yeah I meant i747. It gets pretty easy to misread something when all you've been doing was researching roms and guides. And now its back to researching and finding one of the roms you mentioned. Much appreciated everyone I hope u all have a blessed day..
i know this a zip , but maybe could find help in the thread.

I have a Sprint L720 running a odexed stock MK2 rom from circa 2013. I followed all the steps back then flashed a custom recovery and the rom for the hotspot capability and am still extremely happy with how it turned out but... I want all those fancy new features lol. I don't really need anyone to hold my hand through the whole process but I did reformat a few times since then and have a couple questions before I start paperweightin' this.
Everything on here is MK2. Software, Baseband & Build. If i wished to flash a newer lolipop rom to my L720 would I need to apply any updates first? Can I flash the new rom from the custom recovery? I attempted to upgrade the firmware through Kies but keep running into a device not recognized error that I suspect is because I'm rooted. Anyway thanks in advance for your time!
(Mod can you please move this to the correct board, I can't find the option to delete this.)
Good evening.
I haven't flashed either of my Note IIs since Android 4.1.2. Build # is N7105XXDMG1 and I believe it was teshxx's last stock ROM. The baseband is still T889UVUCMK7.
I never upgraded because I got real nervous when I saw all the problems people were having with "KNOX." Considering where both my Note IIs are right now, would you recommend that I just copy "[ROM] [Resurrection Remix 5.6.5] [6.0.1 Marshmallow]" and Gapps and flash them both in CWM? I guess maybe I should get the latest modem which is "T889UVUCOH4" I believe.
I'm still a little apprehensive because I really like stock stuff but I will settle for Resurrection as long as most of my apps work.
Any advice is welcome and I'm glad I'm still seeing support for the fantastic Note II!
CWM is outdate and hasn't been upgraded for a long time. TWRP is the recommended recovery for the Note 2.
Some combinations of modems and bootloaders are not compatible with each other and may cause problems in terms of ROM stability, cell reception, etc.
Personally, I would flash the latest stock ROM using Odin to ensure that the phone is running the latest modem and bootloader, flash TWRP, create a nandroid backup, and then flash a custom ROM.
Knox is not a big deal in my opinion since it does not prevent the flashing of custom recoveries or ROMs.
This is answered very well by Audit So I am going to close this
Thanks ~~~Oka1
