Moto 360 Mobile Charging Solution - USB OTG - Moto 360

I have been playing around with my Moto 360 for the past few days and the one issue I have is the battery life. Here is my solution which has given me extended use throughout the day... USB OTG on my Samsung Note 2
I tested this today and was pleasantly surprised with the results so I wanted to share this with the community. I assume this should work with most devices that have USB OTG capability but results may vary. Please post your results if you are able to charge your Moto 360 from your phone using USB OTG.
Now, on to the details & photos.....
Items required:
Moto 360
Moto 360 Charging Dock
Note 2 (or other USB OTG device)
USB OTG Cable
Standard USB to Micro USB Cable
How-To:
Connect Moto 360 Charging Dock to phone using the USB cables and set your Moto 360 in the Dock
***NOTE*** This will drain the battery on your phone. I usually carry a couple charged phone batteries as backup; they can be found online for a reasonable price.

Nice I hadn't thought of that!
I'm tempted to get one of these qi-enabled battery packs:

Does it not defeat the purpose? If you have a dead phone, whats a 360 gonna do? I know you are relying on a spare battery, but most modern phones have an internal ONE. YMMV.

My phone wasn't dead after but I didn't give the watch a full charge either, just a nice boost while I was out. I know many of the modern phones have internal batteries and this may not apply if your phone's power is limited.
I specifically didn't buy a phone with an internal battery. I would rather be able to pick up a couple spare batteries online for $25 than have a useless phone after the battery wears out.
But, like I said in the first post... results may vary

the Qi stone+ looks great but its freaking $80!!!! and only 4,000 mah?? forget that
heres a better solution... get a Qi charging puck for $15 in amazon.. glue it to the back of a 10,000 battery pack that are now like $20... use a $1 6inch USB cable and done... wireless charging OTG for half the price of that stone.

I almost took my Moto 360 back. I couldn't get the battery to last a full day. I solved it and now can go from 5:30am to 10pm and it's still over 40% battery left.
Read this post to learn how I did it.

very cool idea. 60 is a bit high for it tho.

Yeah.. Great thing.. Just saw today morning on android central that Samsung was selling usb OTG cables to do the same with the gear watch
Lucky for me too.. I have the same note 2... I also got a xiaomi 10000mah power bank always lying around, which is sold here for throw away price. (Only 999rs.. 15$)..And even if you don't have spare batteries... a Samsung charger is ubiquitous and omnipresent in India...

Monoprice 2800mAh portable battery box

I just got a portable battery box (2800mAh) for $14 from monoprice. (LINK)
Nicely built, relatively small, and about to test whether it will give me 1.5 full charges as mAh would suggest (2800mAh / 1800mAh on HOX = around 1.5 charges).
Box itself doesn't come with any charger, but is able to be charged by any charger with Micro or Mini USB connector (yep, it has 2 inputs).
Output is a male MicroUSB connector that fits HOX nicely (duh!).
Output: DC5.0V 800mAh

I'd imagine if you want to use the phone while charging from it, you can connect them with a female-male MicroUSB connector.
The charger has a button that shows the charge level of the box with 25% increments (4 lights).
Has another light for "FULL".
As soon as I connected the box to HOX, phone immediately showed that it's being charged, as if from the regular charger. Not sure what the current is, but it may come across as slow charge (USB port charge) as opposed to AC charger.
So far I tested the charge over 10 minute deep sleep period, and I got this:
With the box, in average HOX charged for 2% every 10 minutes.
That would suggest that it would take this box 8.3 hours to charge HOX fully, which isn't bad at all, considering you're free to use it while it's charging.
Over next day or so I'll try to completely discharge the HOX and charge it overnight from the box. I'll see just how much this box can spit out.
---------------------------------
EDIT/REPORT:
I discharged my phone to 5% yesterday, disabled wifi and BT, and connected it to batt pack to charge overnight.
It turns out that this batt back is crap.
Overnight, when phone was in deep sleep with wifi/BT off, a full battle pack charged my HOX only by 55% (I charged the batt pack before using it). Even considering some small drainage during charge, I'd say this pack actually acts if it had just over 1000mAh or so, nothing close to 2800.
Oh well, gonna return it and keep looking.
shouldn't this be in the accessories forum?

That's a good option too, although I actually like that monoprice's sticks right into the phone, so you don't have to carry a cable with u.
Also, it seems smaller and cheaper.

I know of certain defense organisations that allow the fixed connectors but not those with detachable cables. Disallowing the cables reduces the risk of the cables being used for data transfer.

Okay, and I guess if I were flying in outer space, my suit was venting air, and the only thing that would save me is connecting a batt pack to a phone - in that situation a cable could freeze solid to a connector on the batt pack, making batt pack unusable, and thus killing me.
WRONG!
That's when Iron Man comes flying to the rescue thus saving your life and getting an autograph that you could sell on eBay for some money and covering your costs of the HTC One X.
OK well, turns out that this batt back is crap.

Portable Chargers Comparison

For some of you coming from phones with removable batteries, you may have some anxiety about running out of battery life and not being able to swap a spare in. I was the same way a year ago, but I didn’t let that fear keep me from buying a newer phone without a removable battery. So I decided to just grab a few portable chargers to use and I’m glad I did.
Below is a comparison of the portable chargers I have. To try and compare them as fair as possible, the process was simple. Reboot the phone, fire up the stopwatch, set to 15 minutes, shut off the screen, plug in the charger, and leave it alone. The readings were taken from Battery Monitor Widget which was set to update the history every 60 seconds. I used a charging cable from my HTC EVO 4G LTE. I didn’t have my N5 charging cable with me and we know sometimes the cable can play a big role. So take that in to consideration if you think my numbers are off.
The portable chargers from left to right.
1.New Trent iCarrier 12000mAh Portable Dual USB Port - $39.95 (Amazon)
*The one I have is an older model which doesn’t included the “Recharge by USB” option. Mine can only be recharged via AC Wall Adapter. The new model has both options but doesn’t included the wall chargers.
2. Anker® Astro 5600mAh Portable Power Bank - $29.99 (Amazon)
3. Anker Astro Mini 3000mAh Ultra-Compact Portable Charger Lipstick-Sized - $19.99 (Amazon)

Review for Each:
New Trent:
I originally bought this to be used with my Nexus 7 (2012) since it was REALLY picky about what could charge it. You can tell this is a lot bulkier than the other two and isn’t something you’ll throw in your pocket. I keep this in my backpack and only use it when I don’t plan on moving around. Or if there are two people/devices that need to be charged. The plastic housing feels a little cheap, but I understand the idea was to keep the weight down on an already ‘heavier’ portable charger. It has held up well.
I’ve used this thing 3-4 times on my phones without it dying which is nice. This one re-charges using a AC Wall Charger (No longer included) or via USB (5v 2A…no charger included). NOTE: I have the older model which does not have the “Charge via USB” option. Only the AC wall charger option which it did come with. I can’t imagine how long it would take to charge via USB. It already takes a long time using the AC Wall Adapter.
Anker Astro:
This has been my Go-To portable charger for over a year. And it still charges my phone at least twice. When it comes to size vs. capability it is the clear winner. It also includes a LED Flashlight built in. There is a 4 light meter that tells you the status of the battery when charging a device or when being charged itself. Or you can just hit the button to see how full it is.
It can easily fit in your pocket or purse. I have a few very short micro-usb cables laying around so I’ll bring that with me too so I don’t have a 3ft cable in my pocket.
Anker Astro Mini:
I just bought this on sale and was surprised at it’s weight when it arrived. It has a metal casing so that probably adds to the weight. The fit/finish is very nice looking. When holding this in one hand and the Anker Astro in the other, you don’t feel much of a difference. Yes the Mini is round/smaller, but it isn’t a huge difference for me. The mini fits in your pocket nice.
If you are looking for something very portable, a little cheaper than the other options, and a charger that will charge you up once (maybe 1.5 times), then this is a good option. But if you may think you’ll need the portable charger for more than 1 charge while out, go with the Anker Astro (5600 mAh).
I have the Anker astro, but it takes AGES to charge my n5, almost as if it was being detected as a pc usb port rather than a charger.. any ideas? Stock rooted...

Nice quick review.
Strange that New Trent 2A output is less powerful then regular usb..
And the average charging mA for Astro mini seems bit lower than it should be. Both Astros have the same output rating, arent they?

[Q] Qi Charger for Moto 360 + phone

I'm curious if anyone has found a go-to charger which easily handles both their phone and the Moto 360 at the same time. I'd like to get one Qi charger big enough to handle them both by my bedside. Thanks.

Hello.
Try this http://goo.gl/UQ98b9 <-link to eBay. Its Nokia DT 901 wireless charger ( Fatboy)

That one is made by powerqi, one of the top brands for QI product, but there are many fakes on ebay, the photo's look real, but I'm not too sure if you will get the authentic one's, as the price looks too cheap.
If you want to charge two units at once, the Panasonic can charge one at a time, also there is a DoCoMo one made by sanyo, similar to the panasonic as posted in the third post.
for dual charging look for energizer, Zen, yijieneng and I think there is another one, not to sure the name I have to look for it.
My wife bought one for me. it works very well. Here I post some pics for you. If u are interested in it, Please search the item id 141606356567 on ebay for more detailed information.

I bought 2 similar to this. Doesn't work with my s6 and kinda works with the 360. Only brings the 360 to about 80% then overheats it and it turns off charging. I had to get a refund from the seller.
I bought this QiFull and have been using it for the last week. It charges just as fast as the 360's charger and all the way to 100%. It charges off the 7000 mah battery making it portable. You can also charge your phone at the same time by USB cord. For $15.99 and prime shipping it's a good deal and works well.

Choetech wireless charger
My choetech wireless charger works fine with Nexus 7 tablet, but would only charge moto360 to about 75% (and makes the watch hotter than the stock charger)

Does this thing have wireless charging or not???

Like the titles says.
I keep seeing mixed answers from different review sites.
It has wireless charging capability. Which means you will be able to buy an lg circle case and you can wirelessly charge. Or no sung in a few weeks there will be a thousand knock off after market backs with it built in.
It appears likely that most or all models will not have an out of the box back where you can wirelessly charge.

So, does it work like Samsung S5/Note 4 where you need to buy the special back that will give you wireless charging? Does it have special connectors built in under the removable back?

Yep. I'm currently doing that with my S3. Though, instead of buying a whole separate back, I'm using a wireless receiver, like the one below:

As for the connector thing, looks like it since here's a picture of the back of the phone without the back cover from Michael Fisher's review from Pocketnow:

Considering you can buy the circle cases for the G4, I don't see why you can't buy the lil receiver like I have with my S3. I definitely know the S4, S5, and Note 4 for sure had those receivers you could use, but I honestly wasn't aware if the manufacturers of these made them for other devices besides the ones I mentioned.
Ok, now I have to consider this phone. Thanks!
Can't live without wireless charging anymore. Airdock + 3 QI chargers at home + 1 in my office.

No prob. Glad to help.
Haha, I know the feeling. I only even bought the receiver for my S3 since the charging port is all messed up, so this pretty much is buying time before I upgrade later this summer. Not a deal breaker if a phone doesn't have it, BUT it's super convenient and in my case, saves me from having to buy more batteries that'll be useless in less than 3 months.
Speaking of wireless charging, you have any recommendations for battery packs with Qi charging built in? I've seen a few, but I don't know anyone who's actually used one. Just the usual ones you plug into the charging port.

Negative, only the QuickCircle case has QI built in. But Im sure there will be $5 stickers on eBay to connect to any back cover in the near future.

no, but there are workarounds as mentioned already !

Battery Cases? Slim battery pack with quick charge?

So coming from a Samsung Note 2, 3,and 4, I'm missing the peace of mind that carrying around a freshly charged spare battery gives. I always felt lame tethering a phone to a battery pack while waiting for it to charge. Well, I love this Axon 7, so there's gotta be some auxiliary portable power to make up for that.
I ordered This portable battery from Amazon that is supposed to be the slimmest portable battery that still has Quick Charge. I'll have to see how it works/fits and report back. If anyone has seen anything else similar, please recommend.
I did find a 6" USB-C cable to use with it so there's not a lot of extra cable to keep coiled when charging.
Also curious if anyone has seen a battery case for this thing?
I don't plan to use them all the time, but sometimes I'll be away from a charger and I need to communicate with work.
I'm using the Xiaomi power bank pro (10Ah) that has USB Type-C and also Quick Charge and my phone is charging insanely fast (30 min to 80%). I got the powerbank for 25$ on aliexpress.
ps: that 5Ah power bank in the link you posted is a joke, you will be able to charge your phone just one time if the powerbank is full. ( real capacity around 3.5Ah).

Thanks for the feedback - I'm actually looking for the slimmest/smallest power bank that I can get to charge in-pocket, as I already have a large 14,000 one that has QC that's about the same size as the Xiaomi one you mentioned. I only care about a single full recharge cycle - but one that does it as fast as possible for this need.
If you are happy with one charge then go for it.

I love these tiny phone-sized chargers as well - one charge is plenty for me as well (usually only need it when I'm walking around all day as a tourist or something). I just wish they would start to make some of these with USB-C cables built into them. I used to have one with built-in USB-micro and lightning adapter and loved it - when it was connected to the phone it was just like having a charger case in your pocket anyway...

Yes, I used to have one with the built in cable, too and that's actually the first thing I looked for, but being that there's not a lot of USB-C devices yet, I wasn't surprised that none existed with the built-in cable. Would be awesome if someone made one, though- I would immediately buy that if it was a single-charge slim w/ Quick Charge.
Just wanted to post my findings and pictures of the iKits unit.
Note that the shortie USB-C cable I ordered separately and does not come with the iKits unit! The iKits has a standard micro-usb that it comes with. Also be aware that the battery is labeled QuickCharge 3.0 - but that's only for charging the battery itself - I believe the capability to charge the phone is only at QC 2.0 (you'll see this sort of explained in the product description on Amazon link below).

I ran my battery down all day to about 34%. Plugged it with this cable and battery unit and was to 100% in a little over an hour, so I am happy with charging speed. Also in the battery stats "power management" area of the Axon, it definitely stated "Quick Charging" during this period.
I'm still interested in a battery case if anyone runs across one.
Here are the links to the cable and charger on Amazon:
$6.88 6" USB-C Quick Charge supported cable
$29.99 iKits 5000Mah Quick Charge 2 portable battery
So does anyone know of a case that fits the Axon 7 that has a built-in battery, similar to the Morphy JuicePack?
