[Q] What is the best way to disable OTA update notifications? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm on 4.4.2 and rooted/s-off. Not interested in the 4.4.3 update (I'm going to flash a 4.4.4 rom soon). How do i stop this notification from appearing every time i turn my phone on?

I read something about renaming the otacerts.zip file to something like otacerts.zip.bak OR move it to an entirely different spot(External SD Card) OR delete it. As apparently that is what gives the notifications. Afterwards you'll have to do the update(It'll refuse to run, no info file available) and then just clear it, you won't see it again.
If I recall right on what I read though, been a couple of weeks since then, somebody else wanted to know on here as well. Just look into it and do some search
Oh and it'll be the /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip file

Thanks. I had searched, but couldn't find anything helpful. I guess I have another question. Can i just let it update? Will my phone blow up into a million pieces and/or turn into a brick?

Why would it "blow" up or turn into a "brick"
If you're concerned about the S-OFF and being Rooted, it has no effect on the OTA. You just need to make sure that you have stock ROM i.e didn't flash a custom ROM(ARHD, Viper etc) and that you have stock recovery.
Being S-OFF or rooted won't prevent the OTA, after the OTA though you will lose root, but you can root again by just booting Philz custom recovery and flashing the root .zip like before.

solved disable ota update notification
In order to use this. you should be rooted with superuser rights for this app.
Download "Disable Service" app from play store. (sorry xda doesnt allow me to share the link for the app as i have posted less than 10 post)
Install app and open it.. Go to System App - check systemupdateservice...... then close the app.
Click on the system update notification and press install and then back button. Then restart your mobile..
This method will stop the notification after the restart.

Has anyone installed the OTA AFTER rooting?

I just got the notification for it, but I don't want to risk anything. Is it good to go?
no, before this gets moved, not good to go. don't flash it. you will lose root
seems like you will lose the root...
but some have posted that even after the ota update... the current root process will still work.
Strange. Thanks, guys.
You'd loose your root.

I rooted did OTA and still seemed to have root access. Just re-rooted and it seems cool flashing stock rom in a second I guess to confirm
Ok I didnt flash a rom but it is letting me do data wipes and all other functions it seems cool!
Flipz confirmed my successful Re-root looks like OTA is safe!
I rooted mine BEFORE the OTA upgrade.. and it stayed rooted after.. -m
I'm not taking any chances. The other dev team is supposed to release their root and it may be more complete than what we have now. No reason to take a chance on an update that isn't totally critical.
I just tried it.. it appears to fail, reboots, and you're still on 1.32.651.1.

Let me correct this.. The OTA update did not work.. (I stayed at the old software version after trying to apply it.. but root stayed around..)
NOW has anyone managed to place the SD card fix on here manually?

Yes please. Just update.zip that goodness please. I am sure a complete SuperFresh Rom is on its way.
Well i guess I got this all backwards
I didnt know any better when I got the phone in the store, and I did the update...
then decided to root it.... did the process....
it worked.... but then I had the insufficient permissions on the SD card issue...
after reading a bunch of yea's and nay's on OTA update
I finally made the decision to just due the OTA update cuz I that SD card issue really bugged me...
I did the OTA update, the phone did this funny thing where its showing a green progress bar and then in the middle of it, a red question mark pops up as if it were saying " what the hell is this??" lol
it rebooted... and phone came back online, and now my SD card isnt having the same issue anymore...
UPDATE: Its back.... so now what do I do? Is there any way I can include all my info and settings and apps in a custom recovery cuz if i have to do this again im gonna freak. lol

your having the same problem as me... the update failed.. which is why were waiting on a way to manually apply the update.
OTA worked perfectly. And I get root access
I still haven't gotten the OTA...no matter how many times I manually "check now" in HTC Software Updates, it does not show up. I don't know why this is happening, it's very odd. I'm waiting for someone to cook the update into a custom, or rather stock, ROM. It's driving me insane at the moment, not to mention a bunch of apps are missing from the market (a whole other issue in it's own right). If anyone has an update.zip I can flash or a way to fix this, please please please let me know. Thanks.
I wasn't getting the OTA notification either until I enabled WiFi, then restarted the phone. Worked perfectly after that. Didn't even have to go to system updates.

[Q] - [HELP WANTED] How to diable the update notification of original stock rom

Hi guys,
maybe somebody may help me with this one.
after i downgraded to 2.2. to get root and s-off (already done) i am getting the update notification of the firmware to 2.2.1. in the upper status bar.
I don t want to have this notifacation because it is quite possible to hit/touch/use this notification mistakenly in case.
But as long as there is no root exploit found for 2.2.1. at a Desire Z i do not want to perform a update.
Even after turning off (unchecking) this update notification in the configuration menu and rebooting. it still pops up.
Has anybody an idea how to manage turning off of this notification?
Best regards
Jake555
install a custom rom...
I was already aware of this solution.
Maybe someday.
But first I wanted a "clean" stock firmware installation, to do a backup through recovery and afterwards i wanted to try out different costom roms.
Step by step.
Any other ideas to solve the explained problem?

Just turn off the checking for updates in Menu/Settings/About Phone. That's what I did, and no more update notifications for me.

If you have Clockwork recovery installed, just accept the update and clockwork will block it, no more nagging.

It will re-check and find the update again another time, and it will keep doing this until you turn off the check for updates though.
like i have told in the first post i already unchecked the update option.
Thank you for reading and understanding my post even that it wasn t so long. :-( [sarkasm]
I tried and found a solution which i wanted to share with all of you.
If you got the same problem like me that the update notification comes even after unchecking and rebooting then you will need a program/backup manager like Titan backup. This program is able to disable even every loaded application.
But before you deactivate/disable a app/system app:
Usage:
1.) backup at the recovery [clockworkmod]
2.) reboot
3.) deactivating the app by usage of Titan backup pro (not donate version)
3.) reboot.
Possible results:
a.) If everything works fine, your phone will boot
b.) if not recover by the earlier made backup.
Hint:
If the phone reboots after ddeactivation of apps you may even uninstall the desired app/system app. But still check every important function of the phone
This worked very well for me.
Now i may and will experiment with costom roms.

Sorry but are you sure this wasn't because you already had a notification that you hadn't accepted/rejected ? If you get the notification when the check is turned on, then even after you have turned off that check the notification will sit there forever, until you go and accept it.
What you can then do is touch on the notification, but when the pop-up screen comes up saying there's an update and do you want to apply it, you just cancel out of it.
Then with both the check turned off, and the notification cancelled, you shouldn't get notifications any more.
Even if this situation doesn't apply to you, it might help someone else.

[Q] Trouble with OTA, can't find answer anywhere

Howdy all,
This here is my first post, and I'm pretty new to the android world as I just recently switched from the iphone to the GS3.
I have my phone rooted and had CWM installed, and some of the bloatware apps disabled. I tried to get the latest OTA from ATT and it wouldn't install with CWM. I went back to the stock recovery and re-ran the update. It got about 31% into the update and stopped, restarted, and said the update was interrupted. Then I tried the newest CWM (6. whatever) and that didn't work either. I've also enabled all the bloatware. Lastly, I tried Kies and it says that my phone is up to date even though I know the update was not applied.
I've searched high and low for the answer to this and can't find anything. I'm at the point where, since I'm new to the android scene, I'd like to get my phone back to the factory settings (unrooted and such) but I can't even find clear instructions on how to do that, either.
I'm used to the ease of jailbreaking the iphone, then restoring it via itunes whenever needed, but it seems that it may not be that simple with the GS3.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Maybe this thread will help: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1896773
Thanks! I'd still like to know how to restore to complete factory.
The ota is failing because of the frozen bloatware. There's a guide I wrote in the general section explaining how to go from rooted stock to rooted ota.

I was able to apply the OTA with bloatware frozen. It will fail if it's been removed, but freezing (through Titianium Backup) didn't break the process for me.

Download the unrooted, completely stock LG1 image from here: http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=SGH-I747
Flash that with Odin, then boot and install the OTA as normal. In the end, you'll be at LH9 completely stock, with the stock recovery and no root. If that's really what you want.

thank you so much. honestly, right now i think i should learn more about android and everything before i start really messing with it. it seems a lot different and, perhaps, more complicated and delicate than just jailbreaking an iphone, and right now, i just want a fully working phone that i don't need to worry about.
i really appreciate your help. thank you.
also, i never had any bloatware frozen except from the disable action in the application manager, it still never worked. thanks to everyone else who replied with some assistance.
UPDATE: I followed your directions, and went to check the ABOUT section of the phone. It still says my kernel is a USER one. My wife's un-messed-with GS3 does not say that. I think I may have missed something.

If you want to go back to stock and get update just use Kies.
Open Kies ( do not connect phone yet)
From Tools open Firmware Upgrate and Initalization
In model write exacly w/o quotes " SGH-I747" click OK
then write your Serial Number from under battery all capital letters click ok.
Put phone in download mode ( like for ODIN) click ok.
On next screen you see info about deleting data and if you want to procced. click OK
and connect phone you have in download mode to PC.
Follow instruction
After you get software installed this will look like new phone you get from store. Get update and enjoy.

I received the D851 10m OTA today. Some questions.

I apologize, I posted this in the wrong forum. Feel free to delete, I can't figure out how (I can only edit when I press the edit/delete button).

Don't update it. More than likely if you have twrp and root it will loop. I did mine this morning and it looped it. I had to factory reset with the lg tool. Just wait it out. The update isn't that serious.
Hey Danon, where did get the LG tool to factory reset? i feel victim to the same damn thing. Need to reset mine now.

First off, this question belongs in the Q&A not development
BUT. Regarding root, you never want to apply an OTA update, you never know if they could patch any rooting exploit and or lock the bootloader. Someone will most likely pull the update from the device and make us a flashable zip that will preserve root.
So for now do nothing at all
I have no intention of installing this update but how do I get rid of the persistent notification? It's annoying me.

I know on my S4 i337m when running the Google Play Edition ROM I modified this line in the build prop to the same line from the build prop in that update.
ro.build.fingerprint=samsung/jgedlteue/jgedlte:4.4.4/KTU84P.S001/140602:user/release-keys
I'm assuming it would work on ours too if anyone has their phone updated and can post that (ro.build.fingerprint) line from their build prop.
Is there anyone that maybe posted an update we can flash on our Rooted/Non Stock Recovery phones?

Longpress on notification then turn off notification.
I encountered same problem and used the following to go back to bone stock (reroot required if you did).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-lg-g3/general/firmware-t-mobile-lg-g3-t2818667
Before entering download mode, make sure you unplug USB cable, remove the battery and put it back in, press and hold the volume button and plug in USB cable, and relax.
This method won't wipe your phone.

Unable to install latest M8s OTA update v2.20.401.1

Hello,
I'm new to this forum, and I could not find anything related to this issue. I'm successfully downloading the latest update and when I try to install it, the installation goes up to 25% and I get the red exclamation mark afterwards. The phone then restarts, and I'm back at the beginning, where I have to re-download the update all over again. I don't have any custom ROMs flashed on my device, it's just like I bought it, the latest update that I made was the update to Android v6.0.1. Current software number is v2.10.401.1, if that is of any importance. I've factory reset the phone, and tried applying the update on a fresh phone, but it still won't work.
Also, while I'm here, I might just ask... I'm getting frequent app crashes/unresponsive app, mostly on the apps that I'm using the most, Facebook and Instagram. Facebook is more stable, crash/unresponsiveness does not happen very often, but for Instagram it's always happening after scrolling 3-4 images. Also, the Sense Home app is always getting unresponsive after a phone restart, and I have to restart it several times until it gets back to normal, since it cannot recover from it, I'm not seeing the home screen at all.
I was very satisfied with my phone before the update to Android 6, but after upgrade, I'm frequently having these minor problems, another one of which is the SD card "unexpectedly removed" error, which is happening when I open up the gallery or the file manager. I'm running low on patience, I really hoped that this last update will fix things, but I'm very close to slamming the phone off the wall, that's how frustrated I am. Please help
Well I'm no expert here but I've also experienced the freezes in such apps and even normal restart didn't work, so I had to force restart it. This happened in marshmallow and lollipop both so i tried removing my sd card and freezes were gone. In my case it was the sd card, so you can try that.
And for the update check if your bootloader is locked, assuming you bought it refurbished or used, the previous owner might have done some tinkering.
Hope you find the solution soon :good:

If you are willing to, you can unlock the bootloader from http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/ and flash a stock sense ROM or other custom ROMs and that might solve the app crash problem.

Before you do that .. as there is almost no custom ROM available for M8s except CM which is in progress, I don't suggest to unlock bootloader.. try to find and install 2.10.401.1 RUU
Installing RUU will usually fix this kind of problem if the data partition is sort of corrupted but not damaged.

If thats what you want to do I'd suggest you try cm12.1 . Unfortunately its the only ROM available to us but its way better than stock in terms of performance imho. But do that if you're willing to sacrifice some things such as double tap to wake and also any 3rd party camera apps, because they crash alot and yeah no boomsound. :fingers-crossed:

I'll try with @ckpv5 suggestion, to install 2.10.401.1 RUU and then try OTA upgrade to 2.20.401.1. If it fails, or if it succeeds but apps are still crashing as they were before, I'll definitely switch to cm, whatever version is stable at the moment. Double tap to wake is really annoying and I don't need it, I don't use 3rd party camera apps, and I guess I'll have to live without boomsound Thanks for the tip, though.

0PKVIMG_M8_QL_UL_M60_SENSE70_HTC_Europe_2.10.401.1_Radio_1.0.U20410.1 @ 60201_20.05_018_F_release_479349_combined_signed.zip
which I downloaded from https://ruu.lalleman.net/ -> Firmware (Expert) -> Firmware Crypted (Original HTC)
I'll wait for you to confirm that this is the one that I need, before I continue with the procedure (rename, put to SD, boot to bootloader, fastboot)
does someone have stock marshmallow twrp backup. I accidentally deleted mine and now stuck with cm only

Worked for me as well. I'm at v2.20 now, so far no app crashes, the "SD card unexpectedly removed" is still there, but I'll live. Thanks a lot @ckpv5 for your suggestion, I practically got a brand new phone now!

hey! can you, if you have, send me a clean backup of the v2.20. I kinda rushed in and forgot to take a backup and now I am stuck with cm :/.

I don't have a backup of v2.20. I flashed the v2.10 from https://ruu.lalleman.net/ -> Firmware (Expert) -> Firmware Crypted (Original HTC) , and then I downloaded the OTA update on top of it.

no no not that. I mean TWRP backup. I dont want to go back to zero relock the phone and flash the zip and re-unlock the phone root again bla bla.
Since you did the same process, I thought maybe you took a backup of the rom after you updated it.
I made a mistake by not taking a backup of it so now it is a problem for me :/
Edit: damn! thanks anyway. I have a long night in front of me clearly. I hate this phone :/
V4A is not working anymore with the latest update. Is it me or everyone has the same problem.
