[Q] Need Help Installing 2nd Bootloader and Recovery - Kindle Fire 2 Q&A, Help and Troubleshooting

I recently bought a KF 2nd gen off a friend and sucessfully rooted it on 10.5.0. But I'm stumped on how to install the 2nd bootloader and recovery. I had a KFHD and used FireFlash in the past but, I not sure that i should use that software. I looked at Hashcode's thread but, still need a bit of a walk through. I do have a fastboot cable but, was looking for a easier possible automated way to install the 2nd bootloader and recovery.

Unfortunately, you need a fastboot/factory cable to flash the second bootloader to your device.
Also (to my knowledge), there isn't a second bootloader for 10.5.1 or 10.5.0 yet.
If you have any questions about your device, don't be afraid to ask!

KF2 - Info for helping development

Just wanted to put info about the Kindle Fire 2 out so maybe we can start working on a 4.2 build
If you download the amazon software 10.2.4 from amazon...
you can then change the file name from .bin to .zip... doing so allows you to extract the file.
Doing this gives you all the files that are on the kindle on your computer... kernel, apps, scripts etc...
This is excellent information. I am tempted to tinker, but having never developed anything, I am not sure I would know what I was looking at, much less what to do with it. Is there any sort of guide for starting to develop on a new device?

better yet, we can tinker with the cm10 build for the hd7... the problem with that being you need a recovery before the rom...

and how do we go about getting a recovery? i take it we would need to unlock the bootloader first before we can install a recovery? can anyone give me some more information regarding developing from start to finish i.e. what people are actually looking for when unlocking a bootloader, what changes need to be made to make your own kernel and what is involved in making a custom rom. I too am looking to start developing and any threads which i can read or tutorials are welcome. i am a complete noob but not afraid to try different things.

to boot the twrp recovery for kf1, you need a fastboot cable. it isn't hard to boot, but it can't install anything yet. a twrp recovery is in the making for the kf2. so, yes. to install, bootloader unlock, but then the hd7 has been booting cm10 along with the hd8.9. so the bootloader unlock is not far away is it? as they are both running and booting an installed cwm.I believe that there may be a kf2 twrp within the week. if you have a kf2 and a fastboot cable, you can boot the twrp for kf1 by downloading the .img. then issue the fastboot boot *twrp*.img command while in fastboot.

[Q] HardBricked HD 8.9??

Is it possible I hard bricked my hd 8.9? I used kffa to flash the 7.3 img but then flashed a 7.2.3 bootloader. They were both for the 8.9 but is that possible to still hard brick it? Or is it possibly a dead battery?

You know, we can go back and forth like this forever, but I doubt we will get anywhere unless you start to provide some usable information. No one here can see your device so the help you receive is dependent on what you tell us about the situation.
So far, it has been established that you used the KFFA to flash some image and the 7.2.3 bootloader, and as a result of this, your device is stuck in fastboot. Based on this information, I can tell you that your battery is probably not dead.
With that being said, considering the fact that you posted this question in the 8.9" KFHD forum, yet made it clear that you flashed the 7.2.3 bootloader (7" KFHD), I'm a little concerned. Perhaps you should clarify before things get worse for you.
Also, you claim to be a "noob at this", but that in itself doesn't help very much. There are varying degrees of "noobs" that visit this site, and it can easily be argued by some that even I fall into that category. Perhaps instead of using a general statement to explain what you don't know, it might be best to to explain what you do know and understand, so no one here has to make assumptions about your current level of experience.
Other helpful information would be...exactly what you were doing and why you were doing it that brought you to this situation in the first place. What have you done to try and resolve this problem on your own? What problems have you run into as a result? The more information you are able to provide about your situation, the easier it will be for others to provide the appropriate guidance so you can fix your device (on your own) in a timely and efficient manner.

Ok I had uninstalled something that I shouldn't have so I downloaded the KFFA and tried flashing the system and the recovery and I read that I also had to flash the bootloader as well so I went on goo.im and downloaded one that I found on hashcodes profile for the Kindle Fire HD. Judging from what you said about 7.2.3 being for the 7" worries me. I thought that all of hashcodes items in that particular section were for the 8.9" . It would boot into fastboot just fine until I flashed that one and now it is just a black screen and won't power on for anything. I'm a rookie rooter at this. I was able to root and install 2nd bootloader on my original Kindle Fire 2nd gen. I've been able to root my xperia tl lt30at. I've been able to root my razr m xt907 as well as unlock the bootloader and install custom roms. I'm a noob when it comes to adb and fastboot and coding etc. I hope that helps.

Now that paints a more realistic picture of what's going on.
Unfortunately, you made a fatal mistake when installing a HFDH7 bootloader onto a KFHD8.9. There is a discussion in the KF2 Help & Troubleshooting forum about getting direct access to the eMMC and re-flashing the appropriate partition images to restore devices such as yours, but it's still a work in progress and there is very little information on it regarding other devices. At this point, it may be your only hope.

[Q] It can be done?

I am looking a obtaining a Kindle Fire 2, (none HD)
I am asking if procedures exist to:
Root
FFF
TWRP
Clock Work Mod rom
Dual boot nice, but no a priority for me.
There's no fff for kf2, it has a locked bootloader so we use 2nd bootloader. Not sure what clockwork mod ROM is, I know of cwm recovery but as far as I know that's not ported to kf2. Just thought I'd warn you before you go flashing fff and hardbricking it.

You REALLY SHOULD read this before doing anything:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2228539
Honestly- if you haven't bought one yet I recommend saving your money for something more easily hackable.
We have some great roms for this device but it has cost many bricks.
We have no dual boot. Buy a 2012 nexus tablet instead. That's what I would do if u could go back in time.

Is that a question? Is it a first generation Kindle fire? Or a first generation Kindle fire 2?
Unless it's the original Kindle fire- is gonna be a PITA unless you're willing to do lots of research and read every word of every thread around here.

I rooted mine on 10.5.0 a couple weeks ago using Bin4ry's root. It seemed to work fine after that, but I didn't run it too long before attempting to put custom android on it. Ended up flashing the wrong boot loader and then replaced the motherboard. The New one was 10.5.0 as well and rooted using bin4ry then flashed correct boot loader. It's running android like a champ now. No more limited o.s. and haven't run into any issues as of yet.
Can you put up instructions please

I've been trying to figure out how to root my Kindle Fire 2 Gen for a few weeks now....can there be anyway you could like put a video how to do it so people don't get bricked devices and for beginners it would save a lot of people's time and money don't you think i think it would be fair to everyone if they were able to have this info on what software to use and what boot loader who else agrees because rooting devices is a open source process which should be shared with all like i said it would be great to know how to do this process if you can do thank you

I just went by the following guide...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2100963
Followed it exactly as its posted and it worked. The first time I tried I used a different guide and ended up hard bricking to a state that it wouldn't even turn on. Replaced the motherboard with a used one and then followed the guide in the above link and it worked for me. I rooted first using bin4ry then just followed that guide. Then installed a custom android Rom. Make certain of which kindle you have before flashing anything to it.. it's a crappy feeling sitting there looking at a dead kindle. I'm not saying that method will work for everyone on 10.5.0, but I was able to get it to work for mine. First time I've hard bricked a device and it was because I downloaded and flashed a file which was meant for a different model kindle.
Good luck! If it doesn't work then hopefully someone can come up with a more modern method.

I'm not sure. Mine didn't do that. It seems like the thing ran like **** after rooting, but after rooting I just went on with flashing 2nd bootloader and twrp then installing a custom Rom. So honestly I couldn't tell you much more about it... I just got it to work somehow. Sorry, good luck.

I delved into the guts of Bin4ry's Root a little bit. It uses 3 (IIRC) binaries, "getroot", "su" and "busybox" and plays games with remounting blocks as RW and using getroot to put things where you wouldn't normally be able to. It utterly failed for me on the first go because of the new tightened file permissions everywhere in 10.5.0.
Doing
Code:
C:\adb> adb root
before running Bin4ry's script helped out a lot, and everything seemed to go correctly until the busybox install phase when it ran into a permission error once again.
I may look into this some more tonight; and I may try running both Bin4ry and Qemu root sequentially as per
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2075959
That's how I rooted my KF2 once before.

I followed it too, and now have custom bootloader & TWRP. I would like to stress a few points:
1) Most of the adb commands didn't work on the first go. What worked for me was typing
Code:
C:\adb> adb root
C:\adb> adb shell
adb# <command>
adb# exit
C:\adb>
in place of
Code:
C:\adb> adb shell su -c "<command>"
2) DO NOT skip the backup instructions. They saved my butt; they may save yours. A fastboot cable is highly recommended.
These directions for grabbing the backups as files worked better for me:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41956668&postcount=3
3) Before I found "adb root" I skipped Step 3 since I couldn't make it work and figured it might not be essential. Ended up with a bootloop. That was when I needed the fastboot cable and my backup files from when I rooted before the "upgrade" to 10.5.0.
4) I was never able to get to fastboot without a fastboot cable before I discovered "adb root". I suspect
Code:
C:\adb> adb root
C:\adb> adb reboot bootloader
will work, but I haven't tried it.
Stupid question...
Hi folks,
Can I ask a really stupid, noob question? I've not had any experience with rooting android devices in the past, but my son has a KF2, v10.5, and he'd like me to root it so he can access the play store. I've read a lot of posts on here about the signed roms and so forth, and because I'm new to the topic a lot of it is going over my head. So some questions:
1) I think, from reading here, that these warnings only apply to replacing the default rom on the KF2, to get a more android like shell. Rooting in itself is a prerequisite for doing this, and doesn't have the associated risk - is that right?
2) I should be able to root the device using the steps in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460 ? That would then allow me to install the play store? The fact I'm using 10.5 doesn't impact on this?
2b) How much risk is there in this? I think most of the risk is in applying custom roms, and the advice to get a fastboot cable applies to that rather than simply rooting the device?
3) The latest version is v36, but v30 was mentioned below. Am I better going for the latest version or going with v30
Again, sorry for the dumb questions!!

Also, if the bin4ry stuff is okay to use on 10.5, which option should I use when I run it? Been looking through the batch file, and I'm suspecting NEWSTANDARD?

Okay, in case anyone else is interested, it worked fine. I used the new standard method in bin4ry. Worth noting that I was able to run adb commands before starting. If you can't then you need to sort that out first
I've installed the google play stuff now, just trying to log into a google account...
I rooted mime with kingo root with a pc.
Im looking to put gapps on it while leaving it stock. The method I used before was moving google framework and a couple of other things yo /system/app. This no longer works.
I dont have secon bootloder or anything on it anymore. Is there a way anyone knows to just put google play no it, nust being rooted stock?
Wow, 2014!! lol
My stupid Kindle updated before I rooted it and now it keeps failing to root. I've tried binary root and king root with the pc and the app. I'm really irritated about it and even more irritating is how old this device is and the chances of someone fixing the issue being minimal at best. I was gonna use it as a car radio with CM.

Hi, I was wondering what tools do I need to get to start experimenting with my firetv

I want to start experimenting with my fire tv currently it's low on storage and I want to address that but I don't know what tools you guys have in order to do that. I already have a laptop and I'm aware that you need to enter a script in order to complete that task.

Hey, first of all you did not state whether you have a 1st or 2nd gen device.
If you have a 1st gen box then go to the bueller unlock root twrp thread....
Either way be sure to read carefully through the forum and research a bit first
If you wish to , root, and install a pre-rooted firmware here's what you'll need :
MOST IMPORTANTLY Be sure to follow the FireTV thread to the letter....
Sloane Amonet script
A pre-rooted rom (or lineage OS)
USB a to USB a cable
Something conductable (safety pin or paperclip) to short the dat0 pad.
Then follow the guide to obtain root
https://forum.xda-developers.com/fi...fire-tv-stick-2-anti-rollback-t3986303/page37
Please note your device will remain locked so don't attempt to flash signed zips such as magisk or custom firmware other than Lineage OS which has been adapted to suit the locked bootloader.

Good you want to go to the firetv2 Sloane root twrp UNBRICK thread. Here https://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/development/unbrick-fire-tv-stick-2-anti-rollback-t3986303
It's really easy to do. Once you have carried out the root process. Go here to obtain @rbox great pre-rooted stock roms
https://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/development/firetv-2-sloane-prerooted-stock-images-t3309783
This let's you free up space as you gain superuser access to disable system apps that otherwise use up a lot of space.
Just browse the forums, you'll find everything you need here and if you need help just ask.
