Looking for a new tablet and I know that for my old one it didn't get a lot of development love because it has an exynos processor in it. Is this still true? I won't be using it's phone capabilities but will get the snapdragon if i have to if it means more flashing fun because i cannot survive on stock.
Exynos always lags because Samsung goes well out of their way to sabotage devs. Knox, horrible bootloaders, drivers, plus a bunch of hardware blunders (wipe emmc bug, HMP booboo) tend to deter devs from supporting Exynos but iirc worst is Samsung doesn't release source code in timely manner.
If you have other options ignore the Exynos. The Tab S has such a nice screen I couldn't resist

This tab doesn't have many issues at all. The rant above appears to be a general rant and even included issues that are outdated and nothing to to with this device !
If all you care about is dev support, then suggest a SD powered device, but this device kicks as in so many areas. ; )
Sammy is quite good with OPEN SOURCE requirements, but can be slow occasionally. Some OEM don't adhere to the GPL requirements at all. Try building a lenovo kernel, they won't even supply the defconfig to compile it !
The thing is, .... With development here, instead of whining, many users have got off their lazy ass and contributed themselves

i will check it out but I'm not sure how much dev support a product from dell will receive. Not much I'd imagine.

I had a bit of time to look through the forum last night and it appears this device isn't getting much support at all in any models. I know it's still new but even the 705 which i have the opportunity to buy and supposed to be dev friendly isn't getting much attention.
I don't think it would be good for the community if I started building as a lot of bricked devices would happen. Lol
the tablet community is too widespread. too many device around and low dev support in most of it.

+1 although in Samsung's defense the touchwiz on the S is their absolutely best so far and really good stock with Nova launcher.

General rant was inspired by owning all Samsung's flagship devices since the original Galaxy S, plus trying to build BeanStalk, LiquidSmooth and Gummy for the T700
Past exynos disappointments include the Tab 7.7 (no firmware support from Samsung a few months in) and international Note with the emmc that self-destructs randomly. Great hardware, lousy firmware/drivers/documentation.
Thanks for your kernel too.

Yup, the Atrix 4G, the phone I was previously on, which my mom is currently using, just got a CM9 ICS ROM -_-;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445052
We need to start moving and trying to get ICS on the Nitro. Even the Rezound also got AOSP ICS port, albeit some things still borked.
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/htc-rezound-gets-pure-aosp-ice-cream-sandwich-port/
Despite all the talk of starting slow with some improvement ROMs and maybe a CM7, I hate to say this, but we need to get either CM9 or ICS, or at least some kind of progress towards it. Every phone out there, old and new, are getting ICS or CM9 infused into them, I don't believe we can't do so with ours. We will spark much more interest in people and members here and maybe even more Devs if we bring ICS to the table. What do you guys/gals think?
I agree.
This is my first Android device and I really enjoy it a lot, thus I hope this phone can get a lively community of mods, roms, etc. At the same time, the SGSII LTE HD will be launching on AT&T soon, and I think that in order for this community to thrive we need ICS before this launch. The SGSII LTE HD is just about equal to the Nitro HD as far as specs are concerned, many who demand 720p and LTE will have the choice between the Samsung and the LG. Due to reputation, Samsung will undoubtedly outsell the Nitro.
I write this not to be **** and try to boss around people who donate their time and receive no more than some meaningless "Thanks" count. I am very appreciative that we have people like Bytecode, Kernelpanic, Cloudraker, and Malnilliom. (sorry if I left some people out, these guys just came to mind)
Lastly, does anyone know where to get guides on doing things like "ROM-cooking" and CM ports. Like I said, this is my first Android phone and I really don't know where to begin looking for this kind of information.

Yeah, I didn't even know about the Skyrocket HD until someone mentioned it here on our thread, and I immediately thought to myself, "Aww F*** we are screwed now". I think it's a **** move by AT&T to release their "flagship" phone under LG and then less than a month later announce the Skyrocket HD. Sorry to say this, had I known they were gonna release the Skyrocket HD, I would've waited for it over the Nitro. But alas, what's done is done, there's no need to cry over spilled milk, the best thing to do is to move on and prove we have the better phone than Samsung does. Anyways, I never was a fan of Samsung Phones since they started making phones. I find they always look..cheap

Heh , Dont have a nitro but i just synced CodeAurora ICS Port for MSM8660 (thanks to codeaurora for making life a bit easier for qcom products) , My first Task would be to port the kernel , Test it with CWM (before i brick my friend nitro)

I didn't say anything was great, I would not know what great means in terms of development on a phone released 7 weeks ago.
N
In that time span a cwm has been developed and 2+ roms with atleast one more announced on the mainpage so someone here at xda seems to think that warrants front page headlines so I am trustin their judgement as well as acknowledging the hard work devs have already accomplished.

WE should not even be thinking about sense/CM9 roms on here for awhile.
Quite frankly, I don't think CM will ever get around to making a ROM for this phone.
CM9 is being ported to the Lag Nitro by Ricardo Cerqueira. Head out to his Google+ to see what he's done.

Why not more development for this line? There is like 3 ROMs and 1 Kernel. Apps section is a ghost town as well. Really surprised at the lack of overall involvement, from devs and user alike. Exynos related? Too many variants? Or just too many tablets being released...idk

There are people that keep it alive Like we got cyanogenmod.. what else could you ask for? There will be more development as time goes buy as the tablet gets cheaper. Right now lollipop from Samsung is buggy.. custom rom wise. There are still people working on roms so.. wait for that.
I just counted well in excess of 20 roms and at least 8 kernels. Where have you been looking?

Wow, the wrong place, I guess...lol. I watch all the tabs forms, I've seen iron, bliss, cn12, y, and stock, but really haven't seen much else. Usually its common to have 3 or 4 kernels for TW and a couple for CM...I mean there's development, just not the kind I would aspect for flagship devices.
more like exynos problem and tooo many variant...
It could also be because of a few other reasons, like there are so many other android tablets out there, tablets are not as popular as cell phones, so not as many people will have one. However, I have been seeing more and more ROMs and kernels slowly make their way onto the page. Like others have said - as soon as the price goes down, theres a good chance that more development will be coming.
So what is with the lack of development for this phone? It's really making me regret getting it.
so get a nexus...
or develop for the device if there is a lack of development issue.

Always research a phone before you get one, as some receive more dev support than others. The edge variants also probably won't see much. You don't really get samsung phones to get cm these days.

I would love to develop but I would have a lot to learn. Maybe someone will trade me for a Nexus 6. I would be happy with root and a custom recovery but I can't even get that working, recovery won't load it just hangs every time.
At present there are obstacles to tackle as far as development is concerned and when that is sorted out you will see some development.
Or maybe Samsung is aiming for a different user crowd, like the type that get a high end phone that works all the time, without apps fc' or freezing displays and they don't have to reboot it several times a day or nandroid back because they can't hear or be heard by callers.
I'm totally happy and satisfied with this S6e the way it is, and Samsung has done a superb job putting this premium phone together.
Pp.
Regarding Aosp on GS6/E it's going to be a long time/never until we see aosp on the device, the reason development is non existent is because of Exynos, Samsungs SoC. Samsung refuses to give out it's source code for Exynos for obvious reasons and without it's source code, building aosp is no easy task. Some devs have built aosp for Samsung devices based on Exynos before but not fully working/stable ones. All in all, you'll be waiting a while.

Would Cyanogen Mod be interested in developing for this phone now that we have unlocked bootloader? Given the choice, I'd love Paranoid Android, but I went hold my breath.
CM is already in development . https://github.com/CM-zenfone2
BrokenROM https://github.com/BrokenROM/device_asus_moorefield
Seems that are only for ZE551ML I hope that will be compatible with ZE550ML
If someone can get pure AOSP or CM working, the ROMs will flow out like water... once a base is established building many ROMs is easy. If we get CM, then look for ROMs like Beanstalk, BlissPop, Carbon, , etc. to follow closely behind. Patience, it will happen...

Good to see Asus is showing commitment to this phone. Also great to see you guys are embracing the aftermarket ROM community. More vendors need to be supportive like this.
We love the enthusiast community - you guys are the ones that like to tinker and have contributed to our growth over the years when we were just a motherboard vendor. I bet many of you still have fond memories of building PCs with our components before tinkering with phones .

Awesome! Is there/will there be collaboration with the developers regarding the kernel and device tree from ASUS as well? That would be key to have a fully-working custom ROM in the nearer future (versus the developers having to learn from scratch and sort of fend for themselves, kludging their way along and delaying the end goal).
So exciting!
We post our kernel source, but that's all we can offer, unfortunately. Our software development is done at our Taiwan HQ. But if any devs need anything, just send me a PM and I'll ask our software team.

This makes not much sense to me honestly. Why locking a bootloader in the first place and then stating to push development hard by providing test phones to specified devs?
But still I want to thank you for your commitment in making this phone a huge success - we'll kick Galaxy and Xperia and the likes out once done

Hi,
I've got some sort of situation here concerning building the kernel for ZF2 on my own. I downloaded the kernel source from ASUS website and followed the instructions one by one (download the android source code, use the appropriate toolchain, issue the kernel build command using fhd_defconfig, etc.
The phone boots and works good, BUT:
The phone never gets to deep sleep mode because of hsic_s3_wlock (kernel wakelock from USB HSIC). Could you please ask someone from the technical department to check what is causing this or if any config entry is missing? I am really starting to doubt that this is something I can influence at all
Wassup Guys,
First of all, I wanna thank every developer in this forum here for providing us with free custom roms and mods for our device. I got a G986B by myself, but I neither rooted my device, nor did I install a custom rom. I wanted to install the latest stock debloated by hmy65, sadly my device type is not supported yet.
This brings me to the question, why there are so less projects in comparison to the amount of people being active here? Besides the reason, that Samsung is not providing every source tree or similar, I am wondering why there are so less custom roms currently ...is it because of massive amount of variety between the model itself? I am a developer too, sadly I am not a pro regarding building custom roms... although I gotta admit that I am interested in learning it. Well, what do you say? I mean like the S8,S9,S10 had plenty roms avaible at that time (speaking about the passed time since the device's release).
