I rooted my Droid Incredible today using Unrevoked's one-click rooting process. The whole purpose of doing so was so I could use the wireless tethering feature. However, now that I have successfully rooted the device, I cannot get ANY application to work. I have used numerous programs found within the Android Market (Barnacle, etc etc) and have also tried the tether application that comes pre-installed with Android 2.2.
When I activate the wireless tether, the wireless network does not appear so other devices can connect to it.
I have searched the forums inside and out. I have tried the ##778 method suggested in this forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=752687 and it did not fix my problem.
Any and ALL help is deeply appreciated! Thanks in advance for your time.

I checked that thread you mentioned and it didn't seem very thorough. Here's something that I wrote on Android Forums that works for non-rooted Incredibles:
This works great on my Incredible. No rooting required, but you must have the 2.2 update which enables the 3G Mobile Hotspot on the device.
1. Select "Phone"
2. Dial "##778"
3. Select "Edit Mode" on pop-up dialog box
4. Enter "000000" for Please Enter Password (unless you manually changed your password to something else)
5. Select "Security"
6. Select "S.IP DUN User Name"
7. Delete the "dun." part of the number (ie: it should read as: [yourmobilenumber]@vzw3g.com)
8. Select "OK"
9. Press the "BACK" button
10. Select "M.IP Default Profile"
11. Select "DUN NAI"
12. Delete the ".dun" part of the number (ie: it should read as: [yourmobilenumber]@vzw3g.com)
13. Select "OK"
14. Press the "MENU" button
15. Select "Commit Modifications"
16. The phone will reset
17. Once booted, go into "All Programs", select the "3G Mobile Hotspot", Adjust your "Router Name" and "Password" (if you desire, but recommmended), and change the security to WPA(TKIP) (this is the only setting I've tried so far-other posts said the WPA2 is buggy)
18. Select "3G Mobile Hotspot - Press to turn on" (It will prompt you that you need the Verizon Mobile Hotspot Feature- just hit "Do not remind me again" and "OK") (Also, I am using Windows 7x64, and the wifi picked up the signal right away, but it took a moment to identify-but it connected to the internet cleanly and the connection is fast).
It can't hurt.

doesnt work for me, sorry
don't use the verizon wifi hotspot application. you need to install the corresponding kernel (Hydra stock undervolt is a good one for Sense) and Wireless Tether.apk to get it to work properly.

I ran unrevoked, rooted my Incredible, and installed Wifi Tether and it has been working flawlessly for me. I didn't do anything with a custom kernel.
What I had to do to get the app to work, is I had to go grab an older version of wifi tether from the developers site and install the apk manually. After that, the newer market version started to work properly.
is ##778 a sense only thing? when I call that or ##778+ on miui I just get a call cannot be completed message

Yep,
2.6.32.17-g9a2fc16

All I did was run unrevoked and then get the wifi tether app.
Same here
Ran unrevoked then wireless tether-works great
Also did #778 - works fine too (only about 500k on either one)
huh, must have fixed the issue with the kernel since the last update. i remember that was one of the first things i did when i rooted was get the wireless tether working and i had to download Hydr kernel to get it going.

Hi Everybody,
I have an anoying problem: I can't get wifi tethering to work. Read millions of posts on XDA but still no results. I love android on my freaky winmo!
This is my status:
Running XDANDROID.2.2.1.AOSP.FRX03.21.11.10.FULL_PACKAGE
Settings -> Wireless -> Wifi -> switch on = OK
Settings -> Wireless -> Tethering -> Wifi Hotspot -> switch on = NOK.
It simply says 'error' and it also switches my Wifi off. After this switching on Wifi also fails and giving me the same message: error.
(PS all the menu's are in my native language and I just translated them directly to english. Haven't figured out yet how to switch everything to english)
I tried different kernels (and modules). The last one I tried:
zImage-2.6.27.46-01250-g8f8207c
modules-2.6.27.46-01250-g8f8207c.tar.gz
Remember I read something about wifi and Radio ROM on the phone, but I have not HardSPL-ed it yet. Is there a minimum Radio version required?
Anyway, Hope somebody can help me a bit. I am desperate .
Kind regards,
Mo

hope it work
Wifi Tethering on DIAM100 with XDANDROID 2.2.1
Thanks for your reply,
I already did that. Put the APK file in my AndroidApps folder. Once booted in Android I ran the application, but unfortunately to no avail. It says: Unable to start tethering, is your device rooted? This seems strange, because I am under the impression that the version on my phone already has root privileges?
Kind regards,
Mo

Soon.
flashed jb and gapps jb - http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-jb-20120717-signed.zip from clockwork recovery, rebooted waited about 10 mins, just when i was going to give up it booted !!
Got Google?
Do you have a Google Account ?
If you use Gmail, answer Ues
- Yes
- No
Selecting Yes, takes you to 'Select Wi-Fi'
Selecting No, takes you back to Make it Google, options: Get an account, Not now
Selecting Not now takes you to 'Use Google Location': Allow Google's Location service.. and Use my location..
Unticking both takes you back to the Welcome screen
If I press Menu button I get WPS Push Button and Add Network, if I click the 3 digits icon next to Select Wi-Fi I get 'Automatic setup (WPS) - which reports 'Request failed. Please try again in a few minutes'
So can't actually get into any custom settings which is annoying !!
Swiped screen down to reveal time, day and date etc, tapped settings option, nothing displayed
Will try flashing kernel and rebooting

awesome to hear you guys got this booting. jordfaz did you have to do many changes to the kernel to boot?
also if you guys havn't seen, ajrty33 has posted resized LatinIME.apk, Launcher2.apk, and CMWallpapers.apk that are a heck of alot smaller than the ones included. definitely take a look at that if you get a chance to save some space.
loxxy, can you flash the rom after lights formatall and then not flash gapps. try to boot into the rom without flashing gapps first and go into wifi settings and see if you can change the avoid low signal box.

These are flags for test build 4
Android keyboard dies all the time if another language is chosen.
I still have the wifi 'poor connection' problems, so that's where I'm stuck.
I'm going to wipe everything and try again, perhaps I forgot something.
Also, google chrome indicated there was something wrong ("unsafe") with the downloaded .zip file.. not important probably.
Can I ask where you found CWM 5.8 for your Hero ? Last verison I've found was 2.5.0.7.
gapps for jb is pretty toxic for hero at the moment when it comes to wi-fi.
With test build 3 you can open Wi-Fi settings, and switch off poor connection avoidance.
Working on build 4 at the moment to fix the rooting issues, then jordfaz and myself will crack on with fixing keyboard language issues

Hi team,
I recently changed my telstra m8 into an unlocked m8 by changing the cid and mid numbers to match the unlocked model. I then flashed the stock RUU and now my hotspot wont work.
I can create the hotspot without any issues at all, and devices connected to the hotspot will talk to each other, but nothing is able to connect to the internet from there on.

I have followed these instructions, but no go with this fix:
1. Purchased and downloaded "SQLite Editor" (paid $2.99) from the Play store.
2. Opening SQLite Editor prompted me for root access. I selected grant/approve.
3. Follow axp878's instructions to use SQLite Editor: Stay on the "APPS" tab and navigate down to: "Settings Storage" >> "settings.db" >> "global"
4. Now, press the "+" icon and type in "tether_dun_required" in the name field and enter in "0" as the value. Save and close out of SQL Editor
5. Restart your device.
6. Once booted, Go to system settings and click on the "--- More" option under Wireless & networks. Select "Tethering & portable hotspot". Turn on "Portable Wi-Fi hotspot" and VOILA.
I really hope someone can help, I am desperately in need of a way to tether, if you can fix my problem, I will be ever grateful!
If you require any more information, logs, anything, please let me know!
Is bumping allowed?
Strange, I used the same 4.16.1540 RUU (on my AT&T M8) and WiFi tethering worked fine. Currently on Skydragon Sense 7, but I was on the stock DevEd ROM for a couple months, and used the WiFi tethering successfully on a few occasions.
Freaking solved it boys and girls!
Found this over on a post by Joe Levi in regards to getting hotspot working on a nexus 6. Apparently this is a lollipop+Telstra issue.
build.prop
Modifying system files could render your device useless, so by continuing you’re assuming that risk
Since this involves working around a carrier setting, you also need to make sure that your plan doesn’t prohibit you to tether (Note: your plan doesn’t have specifically allow you to tether, it just has to not prohibit you from doing so)
Using a root file explorer, navigate to /system/
(Optional) Make a copy of the build.prop
Open the build.prop file with a text editor
Add the following line to the bottom of build.prop file: net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
Save the file and reboot your device
Hope this helps guys, I've never been so happy to have a feature working!
