Hi Everybody,
I have an anoying problem: I can't get wifi tethering to work. Read millions of posts on XDA but still no results. I love android on my freaky winmo!
This is my status:
Running XDANDROID.2.2.1.AOSP.FRX03.21.11.10.FULL_PACKAGE
Settings -> Wireless -> Wifi -> switch on = OK
Settings -> Wireless -> Tethering -> Wifi Hotspot -> switch on = NOK.
It simply says 'error' and it also switches my Wifi off. After this switching on Wifi also fails and giving me the same message: error.
(PS all the menu's are in my native language and I just translated them directly to english. Haven't figured out yet how to switch everything to english)
I tried different kernels (and modules). The last one I tried:
zImage-2.6.27.46-01250-g8f8207c
modules-2.6.27.46-01250-g8f8207c.tar.gz
Remember I read something about wifi and Radio ROM on the phone, but I have not HardSPL-ed it yet. Is there a minimum Radio version required?
Anyway, Hope somebody can help me a bit. I am desperate .
Kind regards,
Mo

download the:
XDANDROID-wifi-tether
Patch (.apk)
hope it work
Wifi Tethering on DIAM100 with XDANDROID 2.2.1
Thanks for your reply,
I already did that. Put the APK file in my AndroidApps folder. Once booted in Android I ran the application, but unfortunately to no avail. It says: Unable to start tethering, is your device rooted? This seems strange, because I am under the impression that the version on my phone already has root privileges?
Kind regards,

Hi all -
First of all, this isn't a "Help - a ROM upgrade killed my baby" post.
All (seems) to be working just fine, and I'm getting email pushed to me very happily (hurrah).
I do, however, have a question about the connections settings, which I'm hoping other UK users can help me with.
I've set up the gprs/umts connection to use access point "general.t-mobile.uk" as my device previously had. I've set the username / password to user /pass, as I found out doing a quick search.
My problem is, though, that whilst the (U) symbol is shown, my connection rate is ridiculously slow (like treacle).
Are there any other settings I should be reviewing? Is that username/password correct?
Thanks for any suggestions
BT
Okay - having rebooted the phone, I'm unable to make a data connection at all. Is this a known problem? Is there an issue with this radio stack (1.0.9) on T-Mobile?
the i-mate rom have wrong settings for t-mobile UK in MMS and data.
You need to set them up manually.
Best way to do it is read the manual on t-mobile site.. it has a step by step guide.
I did that and it worked..
the settings you might have found using google search on 3rd party sites don't work, I tried that already

Password is incorrect for the UK.

I rooted my Droid Incredible today using Unrevoked's one-click rooting process. The whole purpose of doing so was so I could use the wireless tethering feature. However, now that I have successfully rooted the device, I cannot get ANY application to work. I have used numerous programs found within the Android Market (Barnacle, etc etc) and have also tried the tether application that comes pre-installed with Android 2.2.
When I activate the wireless tether, the wireless network does not appear so other devices can connect to it.
I have searched the forums inside and out. I have tried the ##778 method suggested in this forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=752687 and it did not fix my problem.
Any and ALL help is deeply appreciated! Thanks in advance for your time.

I checked that thread you mentioned and it didn't seem very thorough. Here's something that I wrote on Android Forums that works for non-rooted Incredibles:
This works great on my Incredible. No rooting required, but you must have the 2.2 update which enables the 3G Mobile Hotspot on the device.
1. Select "Phone"
2. Dial "##778"
3. Select "Edit Mode" on pop-up dialog box
4. Enter "000000" for Please Enter Password (unless you manually changed your password to something else)
5. Select "Security"
6. Select "S.IP DUN User Name"
7. Delete the "dun." part of the number (ie: it should read as: [yourmobilenumber]@vzw3g.com)
8. Select "OK"
9. Press the "BACK" button
10. Select "M.IP Default Profile"
11. Select "DUN NAI"
12. Delete the ".dun" part of the number (ie: it should read as: [yourmobilenumber]@vzw3g.com)
13. Select "OK"
14. Press the "MENU" button
15. Select "Commit Modifications"
16. The phone will reset
17. Once booted, go into "All Programs", select the "3G Mobile Hotspot", Adjust your "Router Name" and "Password" (if you desire, but recommmended), and change the security to WPA(TKIP) (this is the only setting I've tried so far-other posts said the WPA2 is buggy)
18. Select "3G Mobile Hotspot - Press to turn on" (It will prompt you that you need the Verizon Mobile Hotspot Feature- just hit "Do not remind me again" and "OK") (Also, I am using Windows 7x64, and the wifi picked up the signal right away, but it took a moment to identify-but it connected to the internet cleanly and the connection is fast).
It can't hurt.

doesnt work for me, sorry
don't use the verizon wifi hotspot application. you need to install the corresponding kernel (Hydra stock undervolt is a good one for Sense) and Wireless Tether.apk to get it to work properly.

I ran unrevoked, rooted my Incredible, and installed Wifi Tether and it has been working flawlessly for me. I didn't do anything with a custom kernel.
What I had to do to get the app to work, is I had to go grab an older version of wifi tether from the developers site and install the apk manually. After that, the newer market version started to work properly.
is ##778 a sense only thing? when I call that or ##778+ on miui I just get a call cannot be completed message

Yep,

All I did was run unrevoked and then get the wifi tether app.
Same here
Ran unrevoked then wireless tether-works great
Also did #778 - works fine too (only about 500k on either one)
huh, must have fixed the issue with the kernel since the last update. i remember that was one of the first things i did when i rooted was get the wireless tether working and i had to download Hydr kernel to get it going.

Hi all,
With reference to this thread I found:
https://supportforums.motorola.com/message/311407
I've got the same problem as he does.
There is no way to set proxy URL and proxy port for Wi-Fi connections. I am trying to access a secure WiFi network at my work but it also uses a proxy to enable access to the outside networks. I can access internal websites but not the "regular" Internet sites.

Been trying to get my Defy working with the university's Wi-Fi but apparently Android doesn't natively support it (sorry if I've worded it wrongly, still new to the OS) due to the lack of iptables.
Would flashing any of the ROMs out there help with this issue? And if so, which?
I'm on the 2.21 firmware.
I've tried multiple apps on the market and also tried following connection instructions for eduroam with no luck.
Thanks
I've try the wifi tether for root user. But it seems not work on infrastructure mode. How can I tether in infrastructure mode instead of ad-hoc mode?
The same in MIUI
The same problem in MIUI.
Just ad-hoc. In Eclair and Froyo the infrastucture was possible with "thether for root users".
That isn't the same on MIUI. Just ad-hoc, even with the same software.
Any suggestion?
My Defy running uk stock 2.2 generates a hotspot in infrastructure mode and it works well with my Asus Transformer.
I have seen comments in the CM7 thread that suggest that to generate a tether spot you need to install wireless tether for root - I think others have mentioned that this is only adhoc.
Obviously I am not running CM7 so can't confirm this for you.
Have a look at the main CM7 thread.
Infact the "wifi tether for root" worked in infrastructure in Eclair and in Froyo, but just in ad-hoc in MIUI and CM.
I really can not figure why ...
i posted this in CM7 thread, just to answer your question, im pasting it here:
found it!
thanks to a thread at modaco, just copy hostapd file from /system/bin of any Defy froyo rom, and paste it in CM7 /system/bin , chmod 755, run wifi tether for root, it will now have WPA/WPA2 not only WEP, and also run as infrastructure mode!
file is attached for those who want the solution quick and dont have froyo at hand.
What's the exact name of the wifi tether app you guys are using? I couldn't find one named "wifi tether for root users" in the market. I found this one googling around though: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/. Is this the one?
Thanks

yes it is.
Hello! I used to use Wireless Tether(the released version, not the beta one) and it worked fine on my default eclair. now that i have CM7 RC0, i have some problem, but ONLY if i activate access control.
Tried the version above, the beta one, and i couldn't even be able to find the network(and don't have the hide SSID option to be enabled )
any idea of what could it be?

Hey guys... i'm sorry for what i'll say now.. but i'm not a developer =(
BUT, i can find some solutions on the web. (=
well.. here is the deal... As i said before, i used to use Wireless tether(what seems to be the non-beta version of this wifi tether, as the interface is pretty much the same)
after upgrading my cellphone to Gingerbread CM7 RC0, i tested it today and got a problem on activating access control...
Well.. i guess that i found some possible solution for this:
Why does the "access-control"-feature not work or is disabled.
If the feature "CONFIG_NETFILTER_XT_MATCH_MAC" is missing the "access control"-feature will not work correctly (you will see a "failed"-status in "Show log" for "Enabling access control"). To detect if all kernel-option were enabled in your current kernel the following kernel-options should be enabled: CONFIG_PROC_FS, CONFIG_IKCONFIG, and CONFIG_IKCONFIG_PRO. This dumps the current kernel-config to /proc/config.gz.

hay mate, how do you copy to the sys dir?
bit of a novice
You have to use some application capable of remounting the /system partition as read/write (it is read-only by default) and copy the file, and you need a way to edit permissions.
I've used root explorer to do both things above. Remember the file has to be named hostapd (all in small caps). It works for me -- now I have infrastructure tether in my CM7 defy.
I'm not having any luck with MIUI 1.10.8 with Hostapd & android-wifi-tether unfortunately.
Tether starts with an error in the log in 2.0.7, "Starting hostapd... failed" & "Activating WiFi interface... failed" but I can't see further details than this.
Tether starts without error in 3.1-beta6 but SSID does not come up.
Permissions of Hostapd (with uppercase H) are "rwx rwx rwx", using ES File Explorer, and have rebooted between attempts.
Hi all,
having troubles with my Wifi. It needs a minute to connect and doesn't connect when screen is off eventhough settings are to always on.
I started asking in CM7 nightly thread about my problem but it's better to have a new thread for that.
So far I didn't find a solution.
I tried:
- replace tiwlan_drv.ko with new one by deleting old one
- compared wpa_supplicant, tiwlan.ini and other data in that folder without significant outcome
- tried old 2011.11.16-nightly where it still worked
Anyone got an idea what I have to copy from my old nightly where it still worked?
This is what happened:

sorry, for bringing this up again, since I'm the only one having this issue but I just collected a few logs. maybe someone has a clue what is going on there:
Code:
2012-02-13-19-35-37_wifion.txt > when turning wifi on it needs more than a minute to connect
2012-02-13-19-37-37_wifiscan.txt > wifi instantly connects after starting 'wifi analyzer' app or open the wifi settings window
2012-02-13-19-45-25_wifiscreenoff.txt > when screen is of, wifi doesn't connect eventhough settings are to "always on"
/edit: ok i just tried to read the logs myself and I think you can't really see any reason for that behaviour... am i right that the possible settings I have to look for are in the 'tiwlan.ini'?
Maybe someone provide me a backup of his/her tiwlan.ini for comparison... (I don't have any idea what I'm doing but that doesn't mean I couldn't try. )
I added my tiwlan.ini as well
/edit: compared to tiwlan.ini: no differences. Must be something else.

I'd just copy the module tiwlan_drv.ko [in /system/lib/module] from that older nightly and replace it on the newer build first.
Don't forget to set its permissions afterwards..
You can do this with RootExplorer or with Terminal (from the app tray) by entering these 5 lines:
Code:
su
cd /system/lib/module
mount -o remount,rw /system/
chmod 644 tiwlan_drv.ko
chown 0.0 tiwlan_drv.ko
and reboot.

SOLUTION
Hello all,
first off: delete wpa_supplicant and everything is fine!
I gave up and did a factory reset/wipe data. After that it worked w/o problems.
> Now I will restore all my apps and check if it's still working afterwards. > still working
> restore wifi access points > NOT WORKING ANYMORE!
> with shame I delete wpa_supplicant > WORKS AGAIN!
I'm so ashamed. :/ Should have done that like months ago.
I go back to my backup and try it there. > deleting the wpa_supplicant worked!!!!
My Wifi has a problem with WRT54G Wireless Router, with Froyo Stock ROM and CM7.1 RC1.5-jordan.
WIFI connect, signal is good but connection is very slow.
On notebooks, the connection is faster with this same router.
In another Wireless routers connection is normal from Defy. The problem is only between Defy x Linksys WRT54G.
I have set Defy and Router to work only in G mode, but the problem persist.
With the same configurations the problem don´t occour with another routers from D-link, Cisco or other.
Anyone know how can I solve it?
Tnks.
