Reviews, Hands-on, First looks and Unboxings - Micromax Canvas A1

Shipment and Availability:
Ordered the device via amazon yesterday and it seems that they have a sufficiently well stocked fulfillment center- after ordering the device at 12AM, it shipped by 6:30AM of 16th September. The delivery estimate shows up as Friday, 19th by 8PM (Free shipping) for me.
Official website to buy the device from:
http://www.amazon.in/Micromax-Canvas-Android-Magnetic-Black/dp/B00NEFFWF6
The offers that Amazon is bundling with the device for the initial (limited?) period are:
1) Coupons worth Rs.2000 (they send these by the 20th of October to the email you register at amazon. Correspond to Watches, Handbags, Backpacks, Shoes, Sunglasses, Fashion Jewelry and Clothing)
2) Strontium 8GB MicroSDHC Memory Card (Does have a 4.5 rating on Amazon page, so hopefully it is reliable. Also, the phone accepts microSD cards upto 32GB in size- the total onboard space is only 2.5GB after all the OS and Google apps installations. Given that apps cannot be moved to SD card right now, additional apps take up this pool of space).
3) 10% Cash Back on State Bank Debit & Credit cards. (Also takes time to process, expect the cash back to come in by the 30th of November- I used SBI CC to buy the device; will keep a lookout on when this goes through).
4) For Airtel users, free software upgrades and app downloads for 6 months. (200MB of data per month for 6 months, Android updates do not count towards this data limit so hopefully the Android L update will download on the Airtel network without messing with this upper limit.
Airtel's website says:
"Prepaid offer:100 MB free data per month for software update & 200 MB free data per month for App download or update, for 6 months."

Evidently, there are a lot of conditions here and I am a little wary of the wording- it seems pretty certain that the data is useful only for App and OS updates and wouldn't be useful for any other purpose (browsing etc.). Also, seems to be valid only with prepaid phones.
Will have to check this and get back. More details on Airtel's website. Quoted below:
Process:
• Visit http://www.airtellive.com/offers from your mobile
• Check out the offer available for your smartphone
• Click on the ‘Activate now’ button to activate the offer
• ‘Successful’ message indicates that your offer has been activated
T&C apply:
• Offer valid for Micromax Canvas A1, Karbonn Sparkle V & Spice Dream Uno only.
• Offer applicable on the first prepaid active airtel SIM inserted in the handset.
• Post usage of free data or offer period, charges at 4p/10kb (10p/10kb for 2G) will apply.
• Offer can be availed from September 15, 2014 till March 14, 2015

5) Up to Rs. 10,000 in Amazon.in Gift Cards for lucky customers, ends September 21st. Winners to be announced on October 1st.
Note:
Google also offers 35GB of cloud storage on drive in addition to the 15GB space you get with the google account. Make sure to register your device with the google account you want this to be credited to.

Benchmarks:
From Digit:
http://www.digit.in/slideshows/android-one-benchamarks-micromax-a1-performace-camera-quality-1.html
The overall responsiveness as well as multitasking CPU score is higher on the Micromax in comparison to the Moto E as well as the Xiomi Redmi 1S. The GPU however is a different story. In spite of the lower pixel count, the Mali 400 GPU has a lower score in comparison to the other two phones. Xiomi beats the device by a good 40% higher score on the synthetic test.
Issues:
1) The device does not support USB OTG out of the box. (Source)
2) The camera app and any other application that requires handling of picture or video files fails to save them without the presence of a microsd card in the card slot (Source via BGR)
3) Obviously, the entire GPL headache with Mediatek- Let us hope the partnership with Google compels them to release the CPU kernel sources so that we may have some android development on the forum. This would help so many devices that have been released in India over the past year.
Edit: Good news is that Google is making some inroads here. They released the 4.4.4 kernel sources on 17th September 2014.

That was a happy surprise- things are looking good for the long term viability of the devices if google commits to it this way in the future as well.

I bought this phone but facing lagging issue in games like subway surfers, temple run 2,youtube video playback.
it lags for just a fraction of a second sometimes, otherwise its fine.
do you all who bought this phone face the same issue?
shall i go for refund?

On the contrary, its smoothest phone I've seen in a real long time. I have not done much gaming except SkyForce, which had frames dropped once in a while.

Yes exactly the frames drop but this is happening even in normal games like subway surfer ,so kindly check it and let me know, I think to go for replacement.

Got this video whose subway surfer is also lagging like mine.
So it may be a software glitch which google should soon fix it.

In my experience, battery life is decent. You can expect 18 hours of runtime with moderate use, including 2 hours of screen time. I wouldn't put too much weight on the overall numbers though, Android L is expected to have a good 30 to 50% increment in battery life compared to kitkat because of the move to ART runtime and project Volta.

I have personally not experienced any problems- could be some people may be having issues though I don't know if the Spice variant is better than the MMX or if it is just a matter of MMX getting more customers causing the issue to be more apparent.
I would just go with any one of the three variants- I don't think any one is better than the others since the hardware is inherently the same.

i suggest mmx or karbonn. since eveything except the look is same, u want to get a phone which has good customer service. i bought karbonn. but there is some problem rooting as of now. I would recommend redmi if u want good hardware. that was my top choice. but i needed good updates. btw the battery sucks on this phone.

Google seems to have changed the way the bootloader and system partitions in this device work substantially enough that we now need a completely rehauled way of rooting, installing custom bootloader on the thing. Might take a few days for the developers to do that before we see new ROMs.
Edit: Varun over at Android one cross-development subforum has been successful at rooting the device as well as getting CWM recovery on the device.

And Fairphone?

What about the FairPhone project? Anyone interested? I like to see Firefox OS on this device in future, does anyone have my same idea?
Link: Fairphone - Technical Details And Links
I already ordered a FairPhone. But I'm not so interested in Firefox OS, rather in porting the FairPhone OS (which will be based on Android but with some modifications) to other devices and porting some Custom ROMs (I'm thinking of RootBox and SuperNexus cause they're my favorites) to FairPhone. And I'll make lots of videos about it on YouTube (Unboxing, tests, comparisons with other phones and so on...)

I just read about the Fairphone for the first time, and I'm absolutely gutted. I was hoping that HTC would've heard our pleas and given us The Next HD2 (in my mind called the HDX in homage to XDA's fierce reverence of the HD2).
Props to Fairphone for giving us what we've been salivating about for years, but the name could definitely have used some more thought...

I find the FairPhone initiative higly symathetic. Glad about this thread too.
People in this community should be considering what goes into our phones and how. The meaning of added value gets forgotten easily, with price substituting value too fast. Global market and supply tend to overwhelm and numb individual consumers. FairPhone is an intelligent way to start balancing that a bit.
It seems the project can use all extra hands and support. For instance, their site could perhaps present important facts and additional selling points better. For me, the adapted UI by Kwame is attractive, as is the basic possibility to install other roms of choice.
Unfortunately, not having contributed 10 useful posts yet, I may not offer 'outside' links here. I can only suggest you check out the Fairphone website yourself, especially the blog page, and follow some of the links provided there.
>> Among other things, you'll find a link to the recent presentation the developers of Kwame gave on their UI proposals on Android 4.2.2. Looking good and smart!
>> To find an interview (in English) with initiator Bas van Abel visit the site of blip.tv/openSUSEtv. Search and you will find
BTW - I'll try and see if I can upload some pdf docs I made of what I found, managing to keep the documents (many slides and pictures) small in size... If it works out, I'll post the docs here.
Let's hope the spark comes across :good:
This project is really cool, since most giant companies as of late dont release sources (Samsung with Exynos, Apple with...everything, etc...)
I have full support for this, although I cant afford it I hope the open source revolution continues

Well the first FairPhone will run Android, that's for sure. I also think that FirefoxOS has a great potential, but I think Android's potential is still growing every day as more and more people become hobby Android developers, and it will take a few years until FirefoxOS will get more popular. So for now I'ma stick with Android.... also because I just love it. Every version is getting better than the one before.

I think that Android will become every day more invasive and closed... I admire open developer communities that create a lot of alternative roms, but I think that at this point we need a really open alternative to the giant; and I see in Firefox OS the best in terms of potential to open the mobile world. The system is very unripe (I am testing it on a Geeksphone Keon), but I can see a huge potential in it, and every update it improve a bit. I will follow his evolution with interest, and I hope that in future there will be the chance to put this system on the Fairphone hardware.
Perhaps it will be possible to install Android OR Firefox OS...
If you use Firefox brower in your PC, you will find you never have enough ram to run it, so I thing Firefox is will needs more powerful hardware than Htc one to run it

Keon works better than a lot of mid range Android that I have tried (remember that it's a developer preview unit)... and the specific of this phone are most like low range phone than mid range.
And, I use Firefox on every PC I use and rarely I experience lack of memory, even if I navigate with a lot of tabs opened!

What can cause RAM shortages while using Firefox are mainly too many extensions added. I suppose any Firefox installation can cause - or rather allow for - memory problems, either on PC or phone, if users do not limit themselves in dressing their browser up with all that may seem fancy.
The extra freedom a browser like Firefox offers us users, comes with the inevitable burden of common sense restraint If that is understood, there's no reason in my opinion why Firefox could not aptly fulfill our needs...

Alas, slimming pdf files based on presentations full of sheets down to the maximum allowed upload size has failed. The same goes even for the pdf of today's updated, ever improving spec sheet. But an old-fashioned copy-paste abstract might do just as well.

Logbook of changes:
15 May: Good news! We added e-compass and gyroscope!
24/May: Sim capability has changed to Dual Stand-by. That basically means that you cannot have two calls active at the same time in both of the SIM cards. Though when in stand-by you can get a call on any of the 2 numbers and manage easily your data on one or the other SIM. It is one click to change from one to the other, while you are available on both. Internet works on one of the two (the one you choose), while you can receive calls on both simcards any time.
27/May:
Good news! Our UMTS rate is now better, so faster internet!! It was: "HSPA DL/UL, 7.2 Mbps/5.76Mbps" and it changed to Uplink: cat.7 up to 11.5Mbps & Downlink cat. 24 up to 42.2Mbps
Good news! Our Video Decode Format is better with 1080p! (MPEG4/H.264:[email protected]). That means you can record full HD. Better when you enjoy your videos on your TV for example.
Good news! Our audio encode/decode supports more formats!

Furthermore: sales keep rising. With 16 days to the go until the deadline, the set target of 5000 sold FairPhones has been reached by 59% (or 2975 phones). It would seem that the buzz still very much goes on :victory:
To be continued, I think :highfive:
This is a great project. Really hope this takes off - I think I'm going to order one myself.

Custom Rom Xiaomi Redmi 1s?

exist or are planned, custom rom for this smartphone? miui is great but stock Android is very very optimized
Cyanogen?
OmniRom?
thx
So i'm not the only one who are searching a MIUI alternative.
I've made a search on the web but nothing for the moment.
Same here, found, that MIUI isn't my cup of coffee...
So we will see...
Sent from my HM 1SW using XDA Free mobile app
The problem is the MIUI community.
They're sweet but... we can't talk about anything else except MIUI so it will be good if we can regroup a few users here to maybe interest some devs.
PS : I'm sorry for my poor english.
Also interested in this, I have got no developing experience, but I am willing to beta test, who knows maybe one day ill teach myself and cook a rom for it.

Same. But if I can do anything to help I'll do my best.
As far as I have been able to find out, no sources are out = no AOSP roms for us, unless we write everything from scratch
MIUI Developers never release sources code = No custom rom, that's reason why we don't have MIUI custom on XDA.
-XDA has most skilled developers.
-If you take closer look MIUI it combines all Samsung IOS HTC and some custom Mods from XDA developers into one without permissions. It's Chinese Way, i have no comment on this.
Really exist one Cyanogenmod on Xiaomi Mi2/Mi2S... http://en.miui.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=16834&highlight=cyanogenmod
But in Redmi 1S right now nothing of nothing ...
facepalm for me... Miui sucks everywhere....
We just need to wait a bit...
And I guess this Cyanogen can't be used on 1S because of Qualcomm processor...
Can u guys help?
IMO, Xiaomi has pretty good hardware packed inside, but this same happened when i thought of buying Mi 3.
But i have 1 question though. I am planning to by REDMI 1S for my dad, can u help me to choose or reject this phone?
PS - He's a total novice when it comes to smartphones. request you to give your opinion accordingly.
Hi,
The MIUI interface is really easy to use.
The only negative point is the 4G unsupported in the Redmi 1S.
So I guess you can buy it, it's a really good product for the price.

The link seems to redirect to something else now. Shucks man.
Hi guys, i wanna ask. I'm planning to buy this phone in near months when it launches in my country. However, despite all the great stuff found on this phone - like its processor, GPU, sharp display, amazing cameras, etc - there are many complaints about its battery life and gaming performance - with games like Asphalt 8 running laggy in full graphics. I know that the custom ROM of stock Android for this phone hasn't come out yet until new given that it's a new phone, but i wanna know is there any way to improve its battery life and gaming performance.
I heard that MIUI of this phone consumes a lot of RAM and only leaves around 200MB of RAM. Does this phone allow users to deactivate the pre-loaded apps in order to free some RAM, thus making its battery last longer and performance much faster especially for gaming?
Please, answer my question guys. I'm in desperate for answers here because Xiaomi is about to launch its phones in my country soon and i don't want to be left behind in purchasing this phone given Xiaomi's flash sales.

Yes, i know that. But i heard that even moto e or moto g can last about 6 hours for intensive gaming without resting the screen. So i think xiaomi should be similar in term of battery life wite moto phones given their similar specs.

LeEco Le Pro 3 Review (Real User Review)

I've had my Le Pro 3 for over a week now and just published my full detailed video review which covers pretty much everything from the design, cameras, dual loudspeakers, benchmarks, GPS and wifi range and speeds.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfTIx-DWcmo
I also ran a speed test and comparison against my Xiaomi Mi 5S Plus just to see how they compared as both have Snapdragon 821's and 4GB of RAM.
Overall it's a very decent mobile however, it still has the flaws from the Le Max 2, large black bezels, no MicroSD or 3.5mm port are deal breakers for some. Audio from the type-c to 3.5mm adaptor is very clean and sounds great. No static and loud too.
The camera is a bit of a let down, no OIS still and while it can take some decent photos in good light, low light and video is not the greatest for a flagship mobile. The Chinese need to really step up their game on the camera department. I wouldn't by this mobile for the best camera, I would buy it for good performance and great battery life. I was able to get around 11 hours of SoC (continuous)

Thx with this first review
Thank you And great job !
I was planning to ditch my Axon 7 for this phone, but not really that sure anymore. Seems like a lateral transfer, not really an upgrade in any way (except for battery life I suppose?).
wow..12hr screen on time. That is impressive.

I want to buy the phone because it has great specs (does it feel as good as it sounds?) but I want to know if google services work flawlessly e.g. contact syncing, play store. Since you have this phone what is your general opinion about it, does it work buying it?

I also have this phone. No problem with Google services or Play store. Contactar syncing was perfect, with Google account and others account.
Two days with It and i like It a lot.
In my experience 6:30 of screen with 4G and almost without wifi.
Sorry for my english.
Thanks for the review. Maybe the Pro3 is not the best phone ever made. But it seems to be very very good, will most likely not explode and - taking into account the price - there is simply no competition. Hopefully, my phone will be delivered soon ...
I've received it today...very beautiful and work really good. We need an international ROM however.
I have this problem...it doesn't let me change or delete default APN. A problem I read is already present in other EUI smartphone someone has solved this Problem?

Thanks for that great review. Just some questions. Believe there are some like me who do not have access to LeEco products but are still keen on buying from an online reseller but have some concerns.
1. Are there any noticeable hardware issues? - understand that there are some complaints recently even on the le 2 that the display was not installed properly. Wondering if there are other types of defects that could render the device unusable for the obsessive compulsive people out there
2. What sort of rom is your unit using? - Importers/international sellers are known to meddle with the device to cater to the demands of their target demographic especially to those outside of china, hence, they can install fake roms (custom miui roms that don't receive updates for example) or install play store (after a restore to factory option, the gapps disappear)
3. The rom US units use seem to differ to the non-us units and the model numbers also differ. Would this be an issue if say the international rom is released and its not compatible with a unit bought from an importer? - had an issue before with a mi5 where the rom was an unofficial one and had to go through the hassle of unlocking the bootloader and installing the global rom instead
4.Any idea of software support in the long run and how prompt are LeEco's updates; ie Android N?
Thanks in advance and patience!
I know that US version x727 should be only 4/64 4gb ram and 64 GB ROM. It should have different LTE bands...in order to be used on us market.
Probably the us ROM couldn't be used on Chinese units.

Thanks for a great review. I am ordering this when it becomes available in the US. Can't beat the price for what is in it.

I have been using pro3 (x720) for three weeks. The screen display picture occasionally shake for about 0.2 second. This is the most disturbing issue. You can find the same complain in the Chinese leEco forum. Beside, mobile signal is not as strong as the nexus 5 I used for almost 3 years. If you can ignore these two issue, it's a great phone to have.

Do you think its software related? Whats the rom they're using? Is it like the Mi phones where there is a vendor altered rom installed and does leeco release global stable roms like miui? Sorry, bear with me here ! thanks!

We all running stock rom with/without root. I hope it's rom related issue. As of now ,no official rom zip is available from LeEco.
Hi,
Just bought the 6/64 nonUS Version to use in Europe. Bought it after watching your review, thanks for that!....
Will directly root the phone in order to remove the chinese App's but wating for some plain Android rom's (stock Android). Had CM9 or so on a galaxy before and i wasnt that suprised as i supposed to be, but will also give it a try if it comes available to the Le Pro 3....
I'm sure with the actual specs and this awesome price the community behind the Pro3 will grow fast. Also i would donate 10€ to support the devs.
Sure to be here more often in future.
Thx&Rgds,
Maxcyber
I just got my Chinese version (6GB/64GB Dual Sim) - The phone is lightning fast. Screen looks great - camera is okay (I just snap pics anyways not really a photo person). The screen is decent if not a bit washed out. Indoors is just fine - outdoors I have to crank it to about 85% to see it. The fingerprint reader seems lightning fast if not 100% accurate. ( I get about 4 out 5 times). It let me add multiple fingerprints to unlock left or right handed. Overall the build is pretty solid. I put in my att sim and did not have to do anything else. Picked up all my settings. My antutu scores are 162397 - just shy of iphone 7 scores. Apparently the install is not google certified. I cannot run Pokemon Go or Android Pay (and snapchat I am told I don't use it). Pokemon Go is the soul breaker for me...
The GPS seems to lock lightning quick. I have not had any issues with Google apps although some updating had to happen (google services, play app, mail app etc...).
The battery seems amazing. I am getting great times out of it I don't have exact numbers but so far so good at least as good as my s7 edge.
I was able to put the google now launcher on it so no issue with the leeco skin.
Hopefully with the US launch tomorrow it will have a google certified image so I can run Pokemon go if not I am not sure I will keep it.
Pokemon go functions on official ROM ...see my screenshots.
I can't Android pay isn't active in Italy.I can't prove it...sorry.

Preinstalled 3rd-party apps in XA2 stock ROM (POS: Europe)?

Currently debating whether to include the XA2 in my list for a phone replacement, and I'd like to use the XA2 vendor support / OTA updates for as long as possible before hopping on the LineageOS release train. A requirement for that would be that the stock ROM is clean.
I'm fine with native Xperia apps (whatever they are). My issue is with stuff that has nothing to do either Google or Sony, like Facebook, Whatsapp, whatever else's hot these days.
The Sony forum has some posts saying that the XA2 may come with crap like Facebook preinstalled with such apps being un-uninstallable, only disableable, but also that the set of preloaded apps may vary by market. The GSMarena review and e.g. Techrador has some screenshots showing Facebook and Amazon preinstalled, or say that stuff like antivirus software may come preloaded.
Could an European buyer confirm what the situation is like with phones sold in Europe, specifically Germany if possible? Could such apps be installed using a shell via adb?
Much obliged.

Hi aeolist
I brought my Sony Xperia XA2 in UK.
My experience of Stock Sony ROM is that it has even more Facebook apps installed then in my last Sony phone (Sony Xperia M2 also from UK), some twitter related apps are installed, Kobo e reader is installed, Amazon app is installed, AVG is installed and there are some other non Google/Sony apps installed and they are installed as system apps.
Also Sony does have some ads in software updates app updates section, where they display non Google/Sony apps for you download and install.
You can disable these apps through ADB commands but not uninstall them.

Thank you for replying.
This is disappointing to hear.
It seems the Android OEM ROM situation is only getting worse rather than better since 2013 (year of my last buy). The situation is similar to the XZ1C about which I asked elsewhere. Looks like iOS is the only way to get an acceptable default smartphone software package these days without tinkering.
Agreed, the stock ROM is absolutely ****, at least here in Germany.
The original ROM comes with a lot of bloat like a trial version of AVG that is installed as a system app and cannot be removed. It also automatically downloads 10 new apps after the first boot. Some kind of movie maker and different things I don't need. Facebook shouldn't even be mentioned, since everyone these days seems to preload this junk (FaceSlim is much better and smaller if you really need that service).
If you buy it from Telekom, it gets even worse. They put some of their own pink apps on top and get on your nerves with ads in the notification bar for things like answering machines etc.
The device is absolutely wonderful with LineageOS, though! So if you're willing to lose the warranty and unlock it to get a better operating system - just do it.
You can also root the stock ROM with Xperifix and really uninstall everything you don't need afterwards:

Maybe. But Apple forces you into their ecosystem and prevents useful features like system-wide ad blocking, receival of MP3's from your friends or just using your phone as a USB drive.
It's overpriced hardware with a massive vendor lock-in, I would never buy one of those expensive fruit phones.

Thank you for your comment.
This is less of an issue if they support the hardware for 6 years with software. Though if it's Apple, from reading around, there's always the question whether those fancy phones will survive 6 years anyway…phone price of 600€ / 5 would come out to 120€ per year and 10€ per month of "phone cost" though, which looks acceptable.
I've just found out that the Google Pixel 1 XL is available for about ~273€ while the XA2 is 264€ though. With the Pixel being on P already and getting official security patches till October 2019, and with LineageOS 15 being available for this device too, I'll probably order the Pixel 1. I'll spend one more evening on researching possible caveats, but hopefully that concludes my phone search.

If you haven't already ordered the pixel, I thought I'd drop my two cents in and say that the xa2 is a very nice phone. Great size and battery. Granted I got it on a flash sale for the equivalent of EUR 200 (normal price is about 340 in my region), but still.
Since you're asking about OS features, YSK that SailfishOS is slated for an official release on the xa2 later this year, if that's of interest. This is the reason I got this device. In the meantime, LOS 15.1 is running quite smoothly and the dev has started work on 16.1 too.
Just to conclude this thread:
Because of seemingly more frequent issues with Pixel 1 hardware lately, Apple iOS 11 battery woes, and DRM tomfoolery with the XZ1C and so on, I went with the XA2 after all since the price went down to 230€ making it the 'best value and lowest risk'' option overall and because LineageOS is going to offer some safe heaven sort of OS where I can expect things to work like I want and like they have for me for the past few years.
Thanks for the input.

Suggestion for the next phone after Zuk Z2 Plus

There was a small discussion in the AEX 6.7 thread started by @mcalistri asking for a suggestion to replace his Zuk Z2 Plus with another one. His suggestion was Pixel 3A and Nokia 7.2. I too asked if the OnePlus 6T is a good option. @selvarajrajkanna and @GopalKaul answered both of us and suggested K20 Pro and Pixel 3A. Since it is not good to discuss this in AEX thread I'm continuing that discussion here.
My suggestions and the summary of the discussion:
- OnePlus 7 (but the development is not in a good position; I read a few threads there. Also the 7T is on the way so buying a new one would not be a better idea I think)
- OnePlus 6T (if you want to stay on stock rom because oxygen os is good. - suggested by selvarajrajkanna. I found a few pre-owned 6Ts and also my friend has one, that's why I suggested it)
- Pixel 3A (have better camera and if camera is the only priority - suggested by selvarajrajkanna and mcalistri)
- Redmi K20 Pro (suggested by GopalKaul and selvarajrajkanna because it has latest chipset, 3.5mm jack, bigger battery, etc.)
- Nokia 7.2 (suggested by mcalistri)
- Poco F1 (if on a tight budget - suggested by GopalKaul)
Also please tell if you have any other good options or suggestions in this list. I'll update this post if anything relevant is posted. Our Z2 Plus started with 6.0 and went through 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0 without any serious performance issues. So I think Android Q will also work flawlessly. But if any Z2 Plus owner who like to replace it with another one and also expect a legend like Z2 this post may/should help. Thanks for taking the time to read this long post. ?

In reality I have not suggested any devices ?
Nokia could be a good choice for what I remember about its Zeiss Camera lenses, I could appreciate it on my Nokia Lumia which now it's gone to paradise.
I honestly am tempted to take the pixel 3a but I live in Brazil and here it is more expensive due to the importation taxes.
The K20 if I'm not wrong, is a bit strange to my eyes because it has a lifting camera jumping from the outside of the chassis.
The choice is not so easy also because the old Zuk-Z2 is working extremely well

If you want to try a new phone after the Zuk Z2, try buying either Pixel 3, or even 7 is a very good option[seeing the development of other one plus phones, 7's development should soon emerge]

IMHO we should consider first the device as it we find it from the factory, with its default software and O.S., I mean we should consider if it can or can't be ROM customized as second requirement.
For example, for my personal user case, I purchased my ZukZ2 with Chinese ROM, than the decision to flash a custom ROM on it has been almost mandatory.

Thanks. I can get a OnePlus 6T phone (pre-owned, 6-128, still in warranty) for about 75% of that of a new OnePlus 7's price. So, which one would be better? OnePlus 6T or 7? Or any other?

Thanks. My thought is just opposite. I like almost-stock-ROMs with additional features and the factory OSs never attracted me except for some of their features or something. I flashed the custom ROM the day I got Z2. Before buying it I searched about many devices in XDA which had better custom ROM development support. Also Z2 was a device with almost high-end spec then and I got a huge discount then. That's why I'm looking for a device identical to Z2 of that time.
I would defenately go to k20 pro

Stock OS as the pure Android running on a Google Pixel phone, from what I've heard have everything we need to forget about custom ROM.
Our device, thanks to its hardware is still pretty good to offer brilliant service for years to come.
The maior lacks, I IMHO can resume for Z2 are:
1 - A not superlative camera, beside its hw specs which are not the top of the market, probably has not been achieved the very best in terms of firmware and software to manage it at a better level.
2 - A not superlative sound in terms of loudness
Regards,
I don't see any reason to change the device.
Charge the ROM, chahe the screen guard and change the cover or add a skin.
That's the new device for you.

That's how I used my Z2 bro. It has a unique design (all phones where curved then) and it always stayed different from others. But there's one thing that I changed thrice and it was a bit more costly - battery. Also my phone is becoming slow and slow each day. Tried different ROMs, reduced number of apps. The phone is not performing well too. It is taking ages to click a photo. Also the earpiece speaker now started distorting, I've to use headset always for talking. There are other reasons here and there, so I think it is better to change my phone. That's why I asked for suggestion.
I'm also looking for an upgrade to this phone. I bought the ZUK about 3 years ago with the intention of only keeping it for under 12 months. But I ended up sticking with it since I couldn't find a suitable upgrade at the time. After a lot of use it seems the ZUK is starting to show signs of slowing down. It's taking time to open apps and the storage is incredibly slow as prooven by benchmark testing.
Unfortunately my choice for a replacement is limited because I get eyestrain and headaches when looking at AMOLED screens with PWM flickering. The Asus Zenfone 6 looks perfect with an IPS panel, but it is too expensive at £450 here in the UK. The upcoming Realme 5 Pro seems good with SD712, 6GB RAM and 128GB UFS 2.1 storage for a much more reasonable £190. But I worry about whether this phone will recieve good custom ROM support. There's also the Redmi Note 7 Pro with SD675 but it has a horrible ugly U-shaped notch. Maybe the upcoming Redmi Note 8 will also be decent.
I'm a bit surprised about hear some buddies have the need to replace the battery in their ZukZ2.
My battery, after years of usage looks like brand new, it doesn't presents any sign of longevity.
Furthermore I can't understand how the device appears running slower! We have not any mechanical disk inside it, neither a Windows XP is running here! If your device is slow then try to clean flash after performing a factory reset.
Sirs, are you violenting yours smartphones? Are you using it extensively with gaming and repetitive charging during usage?
May be you should have been more respectful and conservative using the phone now you have to pay the bill!

I haven't heard of this AMOLED flickering issue till now. Is it a serious issue to consider?

But I changed the batteries thrice, all from Lenovo official service center. I always go to stock ROM between each ROM changes, and clean flash between each updates. It's a bit time consuming sometimes but I know its better. Only a very few times I dirty flashed.
I used it for gaming only in the first year of purchase, now I'm not interest in that, that's why. Also I was always respectful to my phone, since it is the only device I have.
The phone is speedier with old stock ROMs and nougat ROMs, but not that speedier than then. So if I need to use newer version of ROMs and apps I should switch to a newer phone rather forcing Z2 to do all new stuffs.
I remember only a few phone models were capable of taking photos with GCams and Z2 was there in the list right after getting camera2API. Also it took and processed photos very fast. But now it is taking a lot of time even to click a photo.

Well it only affects a small minority of people, I heard about 10% of users can experience these symptoms with AMOLED panels. It just means you are more sensitive to the flickering than other people. Sadly, the only way to find out is to purchase an AMOLED phone and try it for yourself. That's what happened with me.

I was of the understanding that flash storage can degrade over time in smartphones. I probably didn't do mine any favours by constantly flashing ROMs and copying files to it over the course of 3 years. I did some storage benchmarks and I'm only getting 33MB/s sequential write speeds. Random write 4K is even worse at 1.3MB/s average. Surely that's not normal.

Can anyone compare against my scores? The app is called CPDT Benchmark in the Play Store.
In regards to battery performance, mine still gives about 4 hours of SOT but that is disappointing when it used to last for 7 hours and 30 minutes. I always allow my phone to run completely out of battery which I heard isn't good for for in the long-term. So perhaps bad charging habits have caused more degradation.

I really don't know why you had to replace your battery trice, I think it is a very seldom occurrence, nor I can say it happened due your usage, most likely it could be due you purchased a defective device.
About slowing down after time, I agree about the SSD consideration made by our buddy participating to this discussion because I recently red something about SSD since I'm going to replace my laptop HDD but also this kind of issue I believe it's happening seldom in smartphones.
I won't to cause frustrations writing that I've not noticed any slowness on my Zuk Z2 so far, just a little bit when I flashed Nameless kernel which was an EAS kernel.
Now on AEX 6.7 I'm using the default kernel which is giving to the Z2 an extremely fast responsiveness and smooth usability too.
I think I will try to run the SSD performance test suggested by our buddy (sorry I didn't wrote your name to mention it but you sent interesting comments indeed).
I'm sure that there are not many users affected by problems you are facing about slowness and battery, or better, it would be interesting to make a survey here on XDA to know how many people have such problems on their ZukZ2.
Best regards,

Very much interesting comments!
I think I will try to run the SSD benchmark but before I would like to ask you why you say that your results are bad?
Did you compared with another ZukZ2 user running similar environment?
About the battery we also have to take in account the adjustment we could have done to applications (running in background or not) the screen stby after X seconds, the charger we use, in fact there are plenty of chargers around that are not good for our battery but that are being used normally.
In any case your SOT looks very normal to me.

Here is my CPDT benchmark result which looks quite aligned with your, so I think that SSD performance has nothing to do with the slowness of the responsiveness of your Zuk Z2.
