Thanks for that, little nervous as the last time I installed a custom ROM (other than my nexus 7) I thought I'd bricked my phone took me two days to get it working (HTC Desire)..
So following those instructions will do the job ?
I need to understand the terminology kernels , boot.img , ROMS, RUU but following those instructions and download the ROM extract the boot.img install that on my phone with fast boot on my PC then boot into TWRP and install the ROM and that's it ?

Correct, flash the boot.img with the command fastboot flash boot boot.img
then fastboot erase cache
then boot to recovery and install the rom.zip via recovery.
Thanks so it really is that simple or am I missing something seen lots having problems with boot loops etc is there anything else I need to be aware of
As far as I can see the order and actions I need to do bearing in mind my HTC is already bootloader unlocked and rooted
1Download the ROM copy to phone
2 Extract Boot.IMG from the ROM
3 Boot my phone into boot loader
4 Connect to PC and in fastboot (phone shows fastbootusb) fast boot flash boot boot.img
5 Still in fastboot fastboot erase cache
5 Boot into recovery (connected to PC or not?) Full wipe then install the ROM followed by installing the updates through recovery
Thanks again

So did you use twrp to flash the ROM or your PC? Is it possible to use twrp?
Dude ....you are bumping a thread from November last year ! What do you expect to hear ! A Rom is always flashed with a custom recovery and the boot.img file with the pc. Always have been like that

TWRP RECOVERY in to FOTA PARTITION GUIDE (XPERIA S)

Flash TWRP to FOTA Partition(SONY XPERIA S).(Terminal Command Method)I will not responsible if you do something wrong to yor device
You can flash TWRP into fota partition if your kernel supports to flash it.(Ask the developer if support is available or not,To know more about Fota Partition Read here.).if yes then follow procedure.
1. You must have to root your ROM first.
2. Download TWRP.img (is the recovery file) from TWRP website.Place the downloaded twrp.img in sdcard. (Don’t place it under any folder.just copy to sdcard.if the downloaded file name is something else then rename it to twrp.img).
3. Now goto playstore and install terminal emulator app to your phone.
4. Now open terminal emulator app and type
su (and press enter key.it will ask for root permission.GRANT it) then type
dd if=/sdcard/twrp.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p11
(and press enter keyr.be careful while you writing the above commands.)
Finished. Now you have successfully flashed twrp recovery into fotapartition.Reboot your phone and when you see pink led just tap Volume UP key to enter to recovery.
Rom Flash Procedure
METHOD 2:
First extract boot.img and recovery.img from rom.zip and copy both to SD card root folder
1. Flash twrp recovery image like you flash kernel/boot.img(by flash tool or by fastboot method).
2. Enter to recovery.
Then follow the image by the numbers written in the image.Swipe to flash.
Then do the same for boot.img but choose boot. Img from SD card and boot(partition) in image 4. Swipe to flash and done.
Sir, Could you please help me.
I have CWM recovery installed on Xperia SL and is running Layers ROM Cm11 based.
But I am thinking of switching to a new rom as the earlier one was very laggy. ([ROM][XS][5.1.1][LMY48P] OneOfaKind 22/09/2015 | UberTC 4.9 | Layers | Aroma Addon)
Could you tell me what shall I do with regards to:
1. Making the build.script change to make it compatible with Xperia SL
2. Do I need a TWRP recovery ? How will it go alongwith the CWM recovery which I already have installed and running pretty well ?
Thanks !

First thing I am not sir..I am also like you...I have just shares my experience to which will help new comers in simple words.
As of your point 1 you have to make change to support on SL...
And about recovery.try to flash with cwm first if not succeed then flash twrp 2.8.4.1 or above and flash the rom.

As said by You, the difference is just in frequency, and none in hardware. So what ever applies to XS will apply to XSL.

You are not bricked.
In order to update to the new OTA you need to go back to fully stock LCB43B image. That means flashing stock boot, recovery and system. BUT unfortunately there's a problem when trying to flash the stock system.img in bootloader. So you have to boot into TWRP, use adb push to get the system.img file onto your internal memory and then flash it using adb shell commands. Use this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=63173308
Then reboot to bootloader and flash the stock recovery and boot files.
Next, download the OTA and reboot into stock recovery (not TWRP) in order to update using adb sideboard. Use the guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=65607393
Hit thanks if this has helped.

No.
Boot to bootloader and type "fastboot flash system system.img"
You should not be in recovery trying to fastboot flash. It will not work.
Latest SDK is fine on Windows 10. Make sure you use the fastboot and ADB from the latest SDK.

Now i am back to LCB43B will try to update to 1.4 via stock recovery now
Yeah, the ADB / Fastboot changed with Lolipop. Anything pre-lolipop will give issues.
I've never flashed anything onto my watch, but yesterday after recharging the battery after it going dead, I get stuck at the 4 dots boot animation. I'm able to reboot the watch, and even get into the normal fastboot menu, but clearing cache, data, and resetting to default doesn't help. I'm really hoping what you guys are doing will fix the trick for me. I simply want to return the watch to stock, but I'm seeing conflicting reports on how to proceed with this.
I've downloaded the Android SDK, but have never used it before. I keep hearing things about adb, and flashing system.img using the latest fastboot - I don't know where to find either of these or how to use them. Would you awesome people mind doing a little hand holding with me and give me a bit of detail on how to proceed with the solution from C3C076?
EDIT: So I think I figured it out myself, albiet with the wisdom gained from you awesome folk. I used fastboot to push the 6.0.1 boot and system images from this thread, and things seem back to normal. I haven't rebooted the watch yet, since I didn't load the 6.0.1 recovery image (the only part of the watch that had worked since the problem started), and I'm not sure if I'm going to have the problem reoccur once it does reboot. If anyone has insight on how to best proceed given the steps I've taken so far, it'd be greatly appreciated.

If fastboot flashing boot and system images went well, you can safely reboot your watch. First boot might take a while but it should boot OK.

Need help rooting after sunshine

What's up everyone. So I just picked up my HTC 10 and purchased Sunshine. I didn't watch the whole video I guess and my phone did a factory reset vs. me going into temp root etc. So now I have s-off, and it's unlocked but I have no idea what else to do in order to get root access etc.
Can someone give me a hand. Thanks!
First flash TWRP.
Then either flash a rooted rom or flash SuperSU from TWRP (<---- this will make you stock rooted).
I'm trying to flash twrp but it's not working from adn commands for some reason. I keep getting an error message.
What error message are you getting?
You might be using the wrong folder to open the cmd window...make sure the folder you use has adb/fastboot files in it.
It's saying error cannot load twrp.img
I'm running the cmd prompt and am able to use it too boot the phone into bootloader mode
the command line I'm using to flash the recovery is: fastboot flash recovery twrp.img

Ok here are a couple things you can try...
type out fastboot flash recovery the drag and drop twrp.img into the cmd window
or
If you renamed the twrp file you may have renamed it twrp.img.img ....add the extra .img at the end
OK, i renamed it img.img and it flashed!! Thanks so much. Ok so now what else do i need to do? Wanna ask so I don't screw anything else up.

Never used MIflash so I don't know how that works. I thought it's only to install stock rom, but I might be wrong. Use ADB to install custom ROMs
With the img file you can boot to twrp with ADB command. Then after installing a custom rom use the zip file to flash it .
I am unable to find any adaptable guide anywhere. find dee_stroy twrp img one. use adb (platfom-tool), then turn off your device and make it go to bootloader state (fastboot). on platform-tool open cmd. (just type on folder path cmd) then type fastboot boot (the name twrp).img and you are set to go. if you wanted to install twrp permanently, after u boot twrp via bootloader, copy the twrp zip to your device and install it. the procedure is all; the same for every rom tho. nothing has changed

This has been documented elsewhere...
The short version is
1) fastboot boot twrp.img
2) adb push twrp-installer.zip /sdcard
3) use TWRP to install the zip
If you also want Magisk you have to install that again. Flash from TWRP or follow the usual process.
