Please can someone advise or point me in the right direction to lock my boot loader. Unroot and flash back to stock please.

You loose a few features like mirror link...

Yes you can flash the ftf directly, and here's what you'll get:
A stock ROM
unrooted
Lose some features related to DRM keys
No OTA
Stock recovery, which is none as far as i know
This is as close as you'll get to making your device feel locked.

Hmmm you're right, one can still relock the bootloader, but the TA partition along with the drm keys will still be missing, which will render the relocking kinda useless.
Better said, I don't understand the reason behind relocking if you're not getting the things you lost back.

I am guessing that OP wants to return his phone. If he is lucky, they will simply check the rooting status in the service menu and not if DRM keys exist.

If I do Relock the BL will it grant the device OTA updates or is that again TA/DRM reliant?
I just sold the phone on eBay for £200 so want to get it back to stock before I send it out tomorrow.
(Awaiting receipt of a pre ordered Z3c... there had been a significant price drop from £450 down to £350... So £150 for an upgrade seemed fair. )
You should get OTA updates if you relock bootloader. I've never tried but at least Sony PC Companian does not complain anymore about a modified device. I hope you informed the buyer that the device was actually unlocked though.

Yes the buyer is aware of the phone being previously rooted.
Is it normal for Sony stock ftf rom to have empty APN settings.... if I remember correctly this was also the case when I originally purchased the phone.

Are they aware the bootloader has been unlocked so might not be able to do what they might be buying it for.

the APN settings get generated depending on the current service provider (currently inserted SIM card). Even then it might be the case that there are no pre-registered APN settings for that provider.
I wouldn't worry about it much
Oh and do inform us once you sell it, and get your new toy

If you get market problems go ot Settings -> Apps -> ... -> Search for the market in the list and then delete Data of the App. After that all will work fine.

I know roughly what you are talking about. I know command prompt, although I never used fastboot, as I only owned X10 (until I dropped it and USB port snapped ), so never had to/wanted to unlock bootloader this way. But I want to learn, that's why I am reading all this now, and I need to ask about something I am not sure of.
Just go through the unlock bootloader process and then you will know what fastboot is
After that just type my comamnd with my file in the same directory and you will be done.

If I were you I would wait till I get ICS on the phone then unlock the bootloader and root the phone.
Quick question. It just wonders me. Sony "supports" unlocking bootloader, which is more dangerous than root. Why rooting is not supported then? Is it because we could unistall third party aplications and Sony has some sort of agreements with them and are obligated by law?

No you are getting the idea wrong
Long ago we discussed alot with SonyEricsson and together decided this is the best way of doing it.
The reason is simple:
Rooting alone does not give you access to all partitions etc. pp See X10 Forums for that. Sony is very good in hiding partitions
With a bootloader unlock we get fully workable fastboot. We are able to write all partitions and change what we want. (Root too)
Also Sony(Ericsson) is able to track who unlocks and who not AND is able to provide a check mechanism to forbid unlocking of phones which are not owned by the user (for example provider branded phones in contract, the phone is usually property of the provider).
So this is the reason. Unlocked bootloader gives us nearly full access, so no need to worry I am in this game since X10 times (like you or not ?)and we always got the phones working like we wanted.
Our work for CM9 on XPS has started now too.

See, I was not aware of that "agreement". Now everything seems to make sense. I am android user since I bought X10 back in August 2010. I was more or less following XDA since then as well, but this forum is worldwide community and is almost imposible to keep a track on everything. I would consider myself somewhere between rookie and advanced users. I know how to do certain things (root, how to use ADB, I was changing framwork_res.apk for my own purposes, etc.). My point also is, I am more hardware sort of guy, rather than software. That's why I am glad you guys are here with us.

Well no. But the first step is that you need to unlock bootloader and THIS WILL wipe your data. To flash the systempartition itself will not wipe userdata.

So you restored with Titanium. Since Titanium is a Root app and you don't had Root before i think you are trying to restore a backup from another phone.
If you do that you have to assure that you ONLY RESTORE APPS and NOT SETTINGS! Settings from another phone will be most likely incompatible.
So this wil be your problem!

I don't think it will, otherwise somebody would already confirmed that I think. At the moment the only way is to flash appropriate firmware (only with unlocked bootloader).

anyway i have already called att and got the phone sim unlocked. now if i think i understand this correctly this should be the order to follow. if you guys can confirm and provide latest links i would appreciate greatly.

well somewhere along the line i bricked the phone.
i was able to install clockwork recovery. i then tried to install a rom. and it froze for well over 30 min. so now all i can get to is the se logo. cant boot into recovery on boot up at all. how do you check to see if you have an unlocked bootloader?
any chance of restarting over? loading the stock rom?

i flashed an ftf world file and now i just have a black screen. no booting up.

Have you tried to use SE PC companion to restore phone to factory state?
From support start update and click repair phone.
That could bring your phone back to life.

That repair button didn't work?
For img flash you can use flashtool.
You don't need root or anything to use flashtool on your phone.
Just pick correct .ftf for your phone and flash it to the phone.
Do normal firmwares work on at&t's 4G version?

finally!!! got it i was continuing to search everywhere for an answer and i stumbled upon another guy here on the site that had a similar issue. sooo i went to the site he found, xperiagamer.com and got the att firmware. flashed it and bingo im back!
thanks for all the help and suggestions men. this truly is a great site!
i do have some additional questions though. now that im back to square one im pondering trying again OR just rooting so i can remove the bloatware. if i just go the root method what the best way?

If you were rooted before you don't need to re-root unless you purposely unrooted it. IF you aren't rooted anymore superoneclick or the zergrush(however it's spelled) is the easiest. I'm 99% sure you don't have an unlocked bootloader though, so you have very few options. I'd say re-root if you need to and unlock your bootloader so you can flash flash and flash custom roms like crazy

It got bricked because you didn't unlock your bootloader.
1.Root your phone
2.Install Recovery
3.Unlock Bootloader
4.FINALLY!! you install a rom okay?
I was a noob too so it's okay now I'm a higher class noob.try flashing your ftf again.

well i got the phone back up and running. its now rooted again. i was doing some research. if i understand correctly the att version cannot have the bootloader unlocked. can anyone confirm this?
You need to pay Setool credits in order to unlock the bootloader. Unlocking the bootloader allows you to lose the sin lock as well, so you could have killed two birds with the same stone.

ya i just found the website. seems like thats the one everyone is sent to on this site.
im wondering now that im rooted if i can clean this stock rom up enough to use on a daily basis. i mean im using tmobile on the device so sharing internet would only be edge lol. i guess the only thing i really want ics for is that fact that its ics.
open the dial pad and use this code*#*#7378423#*#* . Then go to -> "Service Info" -> "Configuration".
If it says unlock bootloader = no, then you have to use the paid service, if yes, then you can do it for free yourself.

Just to let everyone know I am a noob, however I did watch a lot of tutorials on how to root the Xperia ZL. I am referring to this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31545627 However, considering I am a noob, i can't post in that thread. I am experiencing some problems when the Bat file won't push the Super User app and Busy Box to the phone. Are there other approved methods of rooting this phone. By the way I have a locked bootloader, and I do not plan on unlocking it. Very afraid of screwing something help.

Just to add, I am using v30 of Binary, and everything works fine until I get passed the "restore option." After I complete this and am told to go into "Service Tests- then Display" this is where nothing is happening, and I am waiting forever!
You can use the new flashtool (Flashtool version 0.9.10.2beta6) to root your new XZL. It's the easiest way to root XZL.

Yes, you still can root without unlocking ur bootloader.
Using flashtool u even can relock ur bootloader after u had unlocked it.
One tip after u rooted ur phone, please do a full backup including ur TA (this will ensure u still have ur drm key for bravia engine) incase you want to try to flash other rom especially AOSP base rom and getting back to factory default rom.

Basically, yes ur warranty is void if u unlock the bootloader because u need serial key to unlock the bootloader which u can get it by requesting from Sony website (u have to give ur phone imei number to get the serial key, Sony may blacklist ur imei number).
But if u can make it totally stock after u relock the bootloader (including ur drm key, this key is unique u can't flash others TA in ur phone, it will brick ur phone), and consider u r lucky (the Sony technician may not check the blacklisted list), u may claim the warranty.
This is only my logical thinking, u may need to validate my statement with others. I do not know whether Sony blacklist the phone imei if u request the unlock key. FYI, HTC blacklist the phone imei once u request the unlock key.

As far as I know you can't get back the drm key if you're not backup ur TA first before unlocking the bootloader. U may try to ask the owner of the phone, he/she may have the TA backup but even if he/she have it, I don't know whether you know that TA is belong to ur phone or not. I do not know how to check that, it may have imei number in the file to validate.

An you are talking to a complete noob, so I do apologize, but TA? I understand I need to do a full back up of everything, I have done that before on other phones I have rooted. Just use Titanium backup for this, or is there a better app to conduct full backups. I haven't rooted phones in awhile. I had a couple Galaxy's notes and stuff that I rooted but I never did back-ups because I was just using them temporarily. So i've been out of the loop

If you are very new to this, I advise you to read and understand completely before you start anything. If you want to install hacked games or tweak a system a bit better you just root without unlocking bootloader, if you want to taste AOSP based rom or addicted with ROM flashing unlocking bootloader will ease your job.

Hi,
I want to root my xperia z1 compact.
As i read, there are few steps that i need to take before rooting my device - backup TA partition, installing CWM, rooting the device.
Both of the CWM/TA backup require that the device will be rooted but if i will root my device without backing up the TA partition i cant go
back and reinstall the stock rom.
What is the correct order of the rooting process?
If the rooting process will get done correctly can i reinstall my stock rom back(for warranty issues)?
What are the downside for rooting - i want it mainly for Titanium backup and the Lba apps?

If you follow the guide, you should be able to root without Unlocking Bootloader (Which will cause you loosing TA if you Unlock bootloader first)
So, the best way is to Root (Without unlock bootloader) which is in the guidance, then Backup TA, then you can unlock bootloader if you like (to install ROM or other tweaks).
For myself i just need root so i kept the Bootloader lock and have a backup TA just in case.

If i understood correctly, i will be flashing other rom(previous version in which the root witout unlooking bootloader exploit exsist), to my device.
what will be the effects on my device? will i lose my current device configurations - apps/settings/localization/...? where this change wil be noted?
The process is very complicated and with a lot of "Brick" possibilities, will a more noob friendly version should be expected soon?
Yes you will lose your data as stated in the guides. There isn't really any brick potential, if you screw something up you should always be able to start over again.
As long as there is no other exploit, there won't be an easier method.

At step 18 you had to do a factory reset... You should always create a backup. But you're are right, this guide could be more noob friendly
I wish there were some screenshots or more detailed explanations, because after I flashed the first file, I only could see a black screen, a white symbol photo of the Z1C with some japanese (?) characters and the phone doesn't do anything... Can't turn off, can't exit this screen... I was shocked until I see a home screen

Hi,
in my situation it would have been helpful to know following things:
- is it ok to rename the downloaded .ftf files from .zip to .ftf ? --> in my case it was ok, because the windows explorer automatically saves the .ftf file as .zip (also .apk files). --> in your guide, post #8, you wrote that this is not ok.
- as i already wrote in my last post, i thougt my phone got bricked after flashing the first file...
- i got stuck at step 13, installing dualrecovery and got the message "Waiting for device to connect" - in my case everything was configured right on my computer, already checked your tips, but it doesn't work until the fifth restart of my phone... maybe you should also suggest a few restarts when the phone would not be recognized
i've rooted several samsung and google nexus devices, but this phone...
but in general, your guide is really good and helped me!

I rooted and unlocked the bootloader right after I bought the phone so data loss was also not a problem for me.
Factory reset is located in Recovery Menu under 'Wipe data/factory reset'.
In the end you will have an unbranded UK firmware with root access. There isn't really any difference.

What are the diffrences between firmwares? what does firmware means- kernal maybe?
I need to understand if having the uk firmware will cahnge my current "device expereince" - gui, localization. preinstalled apps, or it is
just a change to the os itself without any imapct on the current user interface.

Pretty sure there is no difference in the kernel. There might be a difference in the pre-installed apps or modem, I don't know your current rom so I can't answer that. In the end you won't notice any difference.

Firmware is basically the OS, Gingerbread, Icecream Sandwich, Jellybean, Kitkat, and the main difference between a UK ROM and a Global ROM for example might only be one or two apps at the most.

Sony's UI looks the same on an ROM (that is the same Firmware), and if you need to flash a new ROM to root then chances are you will loose whatever you haven't backed up.

You don't need to care about that... Just follow the guide you won't notice anything different.
If you are scared so much you could create a ftf of your stock rom (there are guides on the forum).

Let summerize the procedure so far :
1. I will create a ftf image of my stock rom using the guide that i found, here :

In that guide the end result is a ftf file and the root guide asks for zip file, how can i get the zip file from the ftf one?

3.ABOUT THAT I AM NOT TOO SURE : on step 19 on sub step 1, i will instal my device ftf instead of the uk one and continue

But this won't even happen because the ROMs are almost the same! I don't understand what you are scared about.
There are people from many countries using this UK firmware and no one complained yet.

Ok, so no going back....
After having my device rooted with the uk rom, how cam i localize(keyboard, lang, cell operators, etc....),
the device to my country?
And again with the logical question - if at the end of the process i am flashing an unrooted rom that i flashed at
the beginning of the guide, how can the device be rooted?
I have just been notified that my device is going to get updated to Android ver 4.4.2(KitKat) today/tomrrow, does it changes anything regarding the root procedure?

You just select your language in android, like you normally do
UK firmware does not mean there is only english. There are still all languages available.
In the end you are flashing a zip file (step 19.1), that zip file has root installed.
I am working on updating the guide for KitKat.

I've put a stock rom in my Z1C and sent it to the warranty. The problem is that they say it has a changed software version, and the warranty is not activated in these situations.
I dont know what to do, because I checked on PCCompanion and it really says it's not the original software version. I even used a tool that i saw in this forum XperiFirm_3.7_(by_Igor_Eisberg), to download the Portuguese ROM.
I flashed it, but i still have this error in PCCOmpanion.
Can someone help me?

Did you restore your TA partition?
If you unlocked the bootloader and didn't relock it, restoring the DRM keys, then the service center know that it's been messed with.
@Pakman123 my bootloader is unlocked i think, i'm not sure about this. How can i check this?
@Didgesteve i didnt restore my TA neither restore DRM keys (dont know what is this).
Can you help me on this?

No DRM keys - no warranty.DRM keys must be backed up before unlockonig bootloader because u loose them in the process.forever.

before you flash ta partition make sure its for your phone using some elses ta will brick your phone

Anyone knows how to use Sony Flashtool (EMMA) like in the Service Center (warranty) to check if it's everything fine? I've searched in a lot of pages and didnt found anything.

Chances are the TA partition will be checked at the service centre.
Did you enable USB debugging in the developer options before you tried to restore the TA partition? (Settings => About phone => Click 7 times on Android Build to unlock developer options)
