Any way to add an OUYA-like UI to a rooted FireTV? - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Thinking of maybe getting one in the future.

You can run the official OUYA UI, no need to settle for something OUYA like. ?
Running the actual games is hit-and-miss though. I suspect that an XPosed module to always return true when an application checks for OUYA support may fix a great deal of the problem apps at the moment.

Not super interested in the games, so that isn't a problem. I just want an all-in-one streaming set-top-box.

[Q] VPN problems with RT

When I connect my vpn, wi-fi changes to limited and probably because of that, some macro apps say I am not connected (like hulu or abc for example) but netflix works and also I can download apps from the store.
Does anyone know how to solve this limitation ?

Might be a split tunneling issue...
Do you lose access to web/WAN based resources from a x86 based laptop too when using the same vpn profile?
If so you might need to speak to whoever set the vpn up on the firewall device.
The same problem is in the "full" version of Windows 8.
Until MS will present patch for this (Windows Update) there is no solution to the problem.
Hopefully we will not have to wait long for it...
For now all I can advise is patience

Be happy that everything works in desktop mode - it would be truly tragic if in desktop mode Chrome would have the same problem.
I am wondering if they will do something about about browser abilities.
For example HBO Go - it needs Silverlight to work. This means that the only way to watch anything is to run browser in desktop mode.
Since so many stuff is not working in Moder UI, apps in most cases are quite useless - I have to admit that Netflix app is AWESOME! - what was the point for Modern UI in first place?
If Ms truly wants to make it work (like it did with Windows itself in the past) it needs to open Modern UI - just set very clear requirements for developers in order to avoid fragmentation in future.

[Q] Ouya app installed but don't launch?

Hi everyone!
I have just gotten my Ouya device today and installed apps from my Samsung Galaxy S3 like Netflix, Youtube and XBMC... I did try installing some other apps called Showbox, USTV, and TVPortal but the thing is, they do install and when you launch them it goes back to the Ouya homescreen. Is there a way to run *any* android app on the Ouya even if modding the console itself or the apk file of the app? I would like those certain apps to work. If there is none I guess I will be selling it on the market.
Thank you.

netflix, look for the 1.8.1 apk I beleive, you can find it on XDA here.
For youtube, I forget which version, Ill have to check mine and get back to you.
XBMC you can get from OUYA itself, you dont need to sideload it.
I found it best to get the amazon app store installed. Most apps on this seem to run good, since the hardware is similar to the kindle and nexus 7.
I used HULU from the amazon app store and it runs fine.
Im seeing more and more the version 1 of the OUYA was a bit of a disappointment and I was a kickstart backer (only 20$ though).
IF (big IF) they create a version 2 Im sure it will be much better but version one buyers and kickstart backers better get something for being R&D

It's fine. I sold it within 2 days because I don't like I can't install all android apps. It was very good with XBMC though

Root ? To be or not to be

Sorry but I'm quite new at galaxy staff or to be accurate in android
Why should I root? I understand that this not a must but still many users doing so
In its I fully understand why to jailbreak the devices mostly because of apple strict methodology or strategy but here with android?
Sent from my SM-P600 using Tapatalk
My reasons:
remove software I don't use,
install better ROM,
backup apps,
add all the apps to multi-window,
use multi-window plus for 4 windows on the screen,
use location spoofer to watch local baseball teams on MLB app.
My main reason is to debloat it, make a backup, and install a ROM that is faster and cleaner than the stock one.
The general philosophy is, if you need to ask you don't need to root...
It can cause issues for people if the don't know what they're doing and is likely to void your warranty.
It is thought best to leave it stock until you have tested your device to make sure it's working right and won't need warranty service or you may end up paying twice for your new toy...
In a nutshell, rooting means to gain root access to your system. You are able to access, alter and delete your actual OS.
This has many benefits for those who like to modify and theme their devices. It also allows backups of the current firmware and allows altering the base functions of your tablet like speed of CPU, governing power usage and replacing the stock recovery/kernel with altered ones that give more access and choices.
However Samsung, in their infinite wisdom (and the influence of the almighty dollar), decided too many people were screwing things up by altering their devices and have now added Knox, a security feature that has no relevance to most lay users...
As it's main objective is to provide a safe shell to use the OS, any breach triggers a Knox warranty void eFuse(?) that they have been using against people when they try to take in for warranty.
I am not trying to be rude but at some point all of us were new to rooting. I am still learning but really like the straight up android experience. I do love the killer features on this tab, though. So you can root and still have the multi windows and pen windows and even the 4 window multi screen? If this is the case I am very happy to hear that. I would like to root but will probably wait a little while so I can enjoy a "new" experience on this beast.

If I were to root, it would be to get all apps compatible with pen window and multiwindow. Also to use gmd to get gestures similar to windows/ipad. Foldermount is great for moving app/game data to the sd card. Adblock to block ads. I still havent pulled the trigger because of knox but its really tempting!

Rooting by itself doesn't change tablet features, doesn't add more features. It gives you power to make changes. After rooting you have exact same tablet. But now you can install apps that make all apps available in multi-window or add 4 way option or freeze installed apps that you don't need. You can install stock based ROM (see CleanROM) that is very smooth and fast. But have to be careful, to know what you're doing.
That's true, what I meant was , can you root , load a custom rom and still have the multi windows and spen window? Because a true google android experience would be amazing with the cool Sammy features we have stock.
Sent from my SM-P600 using XDA Premium HD app
Clean rom is based on touchwiz, I don't believe there are any stock roms for this device yet. If you install a stock aosp rom, you will lose all or most of those features

[Q] What direction with Ouya ....

Good morning all. So like every Sunday I go out garage/yard sale hunting looking for video/pc games and systems/equipment. I struck gold this past weekend and picked up a Ouya in almost new condition along with some Jamma arcade boards, Atari, and Vectrex stuff. So I have the next 4 days off so I am finally sitting down with the Ouya. I always head to XDA when I get any kind of new device and see what is being worked on. With that said -- this device has me scratching my head on what to do. Leave stock, or move to CM11, or something in the middle.
This is going to be hooked up to my Sammy 60". We all (wife & kids) love our android phones, tablets, and I have a Shield. I am going to use the Ouya for the following --
1. Console EMU's. Genesis, SNES, NES, TG16, NeoGeo, etc etc.
2. XBMC and/or Plex. I have a seperate media server I should be able to stream movies to it, right?
3. Netflix and YouTube. Kids love both. It would be easier for them to navigate then use the smart tv way.
4. Android Games. We all love our android games, we have 100's of $$$ invested in games.
Now I have been browsing the Ouya store and I really love some of the exclusive content they offer. I also want to be able to pair up the Moga controllers that I have as well to the Ouya. It looks like I have to load the pivot app for that (correct me if I am wrong).
So the question, what direction should I go? Can I run the Ouya with *BOTH* app stores? Can I run both app stores if I was running CM11?? I also see that there is a overclock option as well, I will want to do that as well.
No Ouya store on CM11 (or anything other than the stock ROM). CM11 is much better than the stock ROM, though the UI on stock is pretty nice.
Hello,
Welcome to the world of Ouya!
I would advise you to stay on Ouya original rom. Installing CM would just make this console a phone/tablet. Besides ouya's UI is very pretty, isn't it? , but this is just my opinion!
You can install Google Play Store if that's what you're asking. There's a thread about this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2359390
With Ouya's last firmware (Chupacabra), at the moment there is not a custom rom nor kernel. There is a "Tegra Overclock" app : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2534960
IMO, go with CM11. MY Ouya sat under a pile of DVDs for almost a year. I had no desire to use it at all. The OS seemed too alien and didn't want to be learned. I wanted an android machine. I got myself my android machine. I'm sure someone has an APK file for the Ouya Store somewhere. I'll look around on the inter-web and see if I can turn anything up.
I haven't run many games yet, just a couple and they seemed OK. I hate the stock controller though. I use mine as a set top box and a Minecraft server for my family. I wish Minecraft had controller support!
Guess what I found, not sure if it will let me post links yet

My suggestion would be to click the Ouya Apk download link, and download the necessary files. And you'll be good.
All you'll need is the Ouya Apk link
Good luck.

Issue with Kingdom Hearts UX on CM13 Zenfone 2

Hey, I'm new here, but I was wondering if anybody else plays Kingdom Hearts Unchained X (KHUX) and has experienced issues of the game instantly crashing on startup. I don't know it this is a Zenfone issue or a CM issue (I expect the latter). The game doesn't have root detection or anything, that I know of. I know people have had problems running the game on emulators after a recent patch to the game, so maybe that is also affecting this OS? I just recently got the phone, so I don't actually know if it worked beforehand. My CM version is 13.0.20160809
Also, while I'm on the subject of weeb games, does anyone know of an easy work around for Fate Grand Order's root detection? Not a big issue, but I would like to try the game.
Hi,
Be sure to check working games thread first. Also, please report any games behavior on CM13 (and based) on that thread instead of starting a new thread on Q&A subforum. Link is on my signature.
Btw, what version of the game?
Because on my database only v1.10 is mentioned as it's the only version reported as not working...

Oh, didn't realize there was already a gaming thread. The version of the game that I'm referring to is 1.1.0.
Ah...
I didn't realize that there's another question LMAO
By the way, for root check, you could use Xposed combined with the latest RootCloak beta. Add the game manually inside RootCloak and try launch the game.

I tried the other game (FGO) with root cloak, and it didn't work. It apparently has some very overbearing root detection, that checks your phone for anything mildly related to rooting. But, looking again, I think I found people using a modded apk, so I might try that.
