[Q] Root Toolkit - no device - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello from Germany!
I got a new device and want to get root access. Trying to use the Toolkit 2.0.2; drivers are installed and M8 ist identified by PC. But when I want to proceed, I receive an error saying "device not detected".
What can I do?

Use fastboot and flash recovery, then root. Simple.
Toolkits don't always make life easier.
You did unlock your bootloader? Cause that's step 1. ?

If you still have to unlock your bootloader, that will wipe the phone completely.
You can try "bootunlocker" from the play store to unlock and keep your data... But at own risk, I've never used it.
Or, transfer all your important stuff to the computer. Pics and whatnot. You can try Helium from play store to backup user apps and data and then transfer the backup folder to your computer.
If you've already unlocked the bootloader..... And just are flashing recovery, no... That does not wipe anything.

My M8 is 2 weeks old and totally stock....
You have a link for the Bootunlocker? Can only find one for Nexus devices.....

You can unlock at htcdev website. Warranty will be void. Or pay 25 and use sunshine. Warranty will be good still, cause as long as you're able, you can return it to stock setup. ?
Just Google each.

Yeah, I was wrong. Seems bootunlocker is only for the nexus.
So backup to the computer first.

[Q] rooting erases the phone?

ive read in some other posts here that rooting our gsm gnexus will erase the phones data/settings/etc. because it is an "oem root". is this true? does it apply to the gnex toolkit?

Rooting does not erase data/settings. HOWEVER, if you unlock your bootloader, it will erase everything. All toolkits that I have seen, root by unlocking your bootloader first (if it is locked).
Use this, and you will root without losing anything, locked bootloader or not.

Because it just does. It's a security thing. But it doesn't matter - with what I pointed you to in my previous post, you can root, flash a custom recovery, backup everything, then unlock your bootloader and restore the backup.
An unlocked bootloader is not required to flash a new ROM or kernel if you have root. You cannot, however, flash things through fastboot, but it doesn't matter.
In any case, I would recommend you unlock your bootloader and leave it unlocked.

security reason...if you have a phone with the bootloader locked and a lockscreen password, ur phone is secure (EDIT: usb debug need to be disabled to be real secure)...so if u lost the phone for example someone could unlock the bootloader and with root permission could get ur personal data..instead in this way if he unlock the bootloader the data in it is wiped..
with the bootloader unlocked ur phone give u free access to the system, so u can root it, flash rom, kernel and everything
in case a day u change idea, u can also relock the bootloader (this will wipe again ur phone EDIT: will not wipe it)..this is usefull to get warranty for example
there is also an exploit, mentioned before in the thread, that is able to root ur phone without unlocking the bootloader..but i suggest to unlock the bootloader as u have more control of ur phone by having access to fastboot commands
thanks for the help guys! i have to figure out if i really want to wipe all my data. if i use titanium to backup everything, then unlock bootloader, can i still restore the same backed up data, or does the changed bootloader make that impossible?

Not entirely true. You need to have USB debugging disabled in settings as well for it to be secure.

You do NOT have to wipe all your data.
Follow these steps:
1) Root your device using the method I linked to above;
2) Download ROM Manager from the market;
3) Using ROM Manager, flash CWM recovery;
4) Reboot into recovery and perform a backup;
5) Copy that backup OFF of your device;
6) Unlock your bootloader; <== This will wipe your device, including everything in /sdcard...
7) Copy your backup back to your device;
8) Reboot into recovery and restore your backup;
9) Done. Now your bootloader is unlocked, you have root, and your data/settings are exactly how they were before.
EDIT: Yes, you can use Titanium Backup once you root, but using CWM recovery is easier and faster.

[Q] Update from Stock Rooted 4.0.2 to 4.0.4?

I am currently on rooted stock 4.0.2 on my GSM Galaxy Nexus. I know I will be able to receive the 4.0.4 OTA, but will it break root or re-lock my bootloader? If so, will be I be able to re-root without losing all of my data?

Yes you will loose root and normally I would say you would not loose your locked bootloader BUT since there apears to be a new bootloader version with this OTA I might be wrong and your bootloader might end up locked again. I myself updated manually and also flashed the bootloader and it did not switch to a locked state but I would not bet on that. Maybe someone else can varify...
Anyway: be sure to make a proper backup and no harm should be done right? It is always possible to re-root and re-unlock. with a proper backup no harm in that
use ota root keeper on the play store

If you're rooted, i thought you cant go through with the ota.

oh yeah. i think you're right. i don't have custom recovery. could've waited. oh well. impatience does that to you.
You will lose root but it can be restored easily without losing any data. The setuid bit on /system/bin/su was removed by the OTA update. You can simply chmod the file to restore it using cwm recovery and adb.
Full steps can be found here (sorry, I can't post links): blog.talawah.net/2012/04/how-to-restore-root-access-after.html
I used Voodoo Root Keeper to restore my root access. However, full root is not restored initially. I started up Titanium Backup and root was restored fully. It was a file right issue why the root was not restored completely.
No CWM needed. Since I want to keep using OTA, I stay far away from CWM.

How can I unroot my Pixel XL?

A summary of my situation:
- Got Pixel XL
-Downloaded snapchat
-Logged into snapchat
-Rooted phone
-Accidentally logged out of snapchat
-Snapchat checks for root before it lets you log in
-I cannot log in until I first unroot
I have tried searching the Pixel XL reddit as well as the XDA Pixel XL forums, but I could not find a guide/program for unrooting the phone. If anyone knows how I could go about this, please let me know. Thank you.
Open SuperSu, cgo to settings, click on Unroot, reboot. Done
Why does Snapchat not like root? Been reading it a lot on other posts but not why.

This doesn't work. Uninstall fails.
I mean, ultimately you can choose to flash the factory image or sideload the full OTA update which will reset you back to stock. (Be careful with the flashall bat file in the factory image...edit it and remove the -w from the fastboot update command if you don't want to wipe data). That is a cannon, yes.

Makes it easier to get around notifications that you have watched a post or the notification that you have performed a screen shot.
Instead of going after the exploits individually they go after the "root" of the cause. Pun so intended.

Oh that's right, Chainfire fixed it so it's a boot img only patch now. Yea, do this and you're good to go.
Say I needed to remove root and relock the bootloader to return this phone in exchange for the 128gb model. Is that possible? I've read that relocking will instantly brick my phone. I'm nervous about doing anything to this phone now haha.

Relocking if you have modified it MAY soft brick it. If you changed anything just go ahead and restore using a stock image and then relock.
The only thing I did after unlocking it is root it. Nothing custom. I downloaded titanium backup, granted it root access and that's it....didn't do anything else with it. Theoretically I should be able to remove root and relock the bootloader correct?

Any luck with un-rooting it?
Haven't attempted it yet. Going to call around at all the Verizon in my area to see if any of them have the 128gb in either size pixel on my break at work today first. If they do, then I'll attempt unroot this evening and let you guys know what happens.

Why not just download the factory image flash back to stock. Longer process because you have to download that file but ultimately you probably want the stock image laying around just in case anyway..
https://developers.google.com/android/images
I have it downloaded as of last night. That's what I'll end up doing if I find a store with the 128gb in stock.
Turns out there are no stores around in my whole state that have the 128gb in stock. So no point in removing root for me unless I want my bluetooth connectivity with my car back.
Just flash the stock boot.img from the version you're currently on. Then uninstall the SU app.

I can confirm that this works
I downloaded the factory image: marlin-nde63v-factory-a66866ba.zip
Found boot.img inside and extracted it and then flashed by
fastboot flash boot_a /path/to/boot.img
fastboot flash boot_b /path/to/boot.img
Snapchat now opens then i rerooted via chainfires steps here
https://plus.google.com/+Chainfire/posts/CBL8pnKtA8F?sfc=true
I had rooted with with boot to root. I use fastboot to flash stock boot.img to boot_a and boot_b. When my phone rebooted it wiped it self. Was I supposed to get boot.img from the OTA image> Ws there something that I could have done to avoid the wipe? I'm very sad to have lost lots of data.
Thanks.

Just unlocking bootloader for now?

Upgrading from my OPO so going to try out stock for a bit.
Best course would be unlock Bootloader right away and later on if I want TWRP and root, that's the simple part, correct?
Unlocked bootloader doesn't trip anything in terms of ota or secure apps. That's only from custom recovery/root?

As long as you keep your stock revocery you will get official OTA's.
Unlocking the bootloader will erase all your internal data. But after that, you are free to flash custom recovery as soon as you want to.
Like I already said, you can stay with stock recovery and get all OTA's.

You can connect your OP5T to your computer and transfer all your files (music, pictures, contacts) to your computer.
Unfortunately Titanium Backup does not work without root. Otherwise you could save your apps+appdata too.

Ahh, that's what I assumed. I'll have to restart again at some point. I might do it when official TWRP gets released for 5T. At this point I'll just continue to use it normally (even though it hurts me to use it without ios emojis, adblock etc etc)

Root and update OTA?

Hello ,
I will have a ONE PLUS 5T.
I would like to root this one to have adblocker...
First question : How could root this?
Second question: If my phone is rooted, is it possible to have update OTA (or like samsung, impossible after)?
Thank you;
If you replace the stock recovery with a custom recovery, like TWRP, OTAs will not work. However, if retain the stock recovery and simply boot TWRP in fastboot mode, you will be able to root your stock phone and receive OTAs. Just use the ADB command <fastboot boot twro_xxx.img> or simply flash back to a stock recovery image every time an OTA comes in.

Let me clarify: OTA stands for Over-The-Air and implies that you're going to download the partial update from OnePlus and install it in stock recovery. Do NOT do this.
OnePlus usually publishes full zips of their updates when the OTA is released. Currently a mirror for them exists in the guides section. You can flash those (>1 GB) safely in TWRP to update OOS.

Here is the reality. YES. You can still receive OTAs with root, However, the OTA will break the root and you will need to reroot your device. Those who are saying no are wrong. It is very simple. To process an OTA, your phone needs stock recovery. TWRP will not process an OTA. So if you have stock recovery in your recovery partition and you reboot your phone into fastboot mode and from your PC, run the ADB command, <fastboot boot twrp_xxx.img>, you will boot up the TWRP image and will be able to run it as one normally would, but you will still have stock recovery loaded in the recovery partition.[QRCODE][/QRCODE]

I apologize if I'm out of the loop. When I first read about OTAs with root I was on a Samsung device and everyone said that it would either brick the phone or upgrade the OS with no way to re-root the device. Looking through your answer it's obvious that that fear probably only applies to Samsung devices. Thanks for correcting me on this.

Exactly like I said. Rooting, by itself, does not wipe your storage. The only time your storage is wiped is when you unlock your (bootloader) phone, when you manually choose to wipe storage in TWRP or when you do a factory reset. If you do not have an unlocked bootlader, you must make a backup of your files first, as once you unlock it does a factory reset. You can then run TWRP and restore your files. You are now rooted with your files and ability to take OTAs. There are plenty of tutorials here on XDA describing the process step by step. May I suggest you do a search first. You are very likely to get all the answers to these questions as they have been asked many, many times.
Thank you.

Look through the Magisk forum. They have a method of rooting that doesn't require a custom recovery.
I use helium backup for my non-root app backup needs. Settings are trickier and I typically do them over every time. Super backup & restore is good for call logs, texts, and contacts.

Man seriously! You got your answers and still you keep asking. Makes me wonder if you are just trolling
Non-trolling question - I am experienced when it comes to flashing/rooting. So if I want to stay with TWRP, I have to sacrifice OTA's, but it will be possible to flash the new updated zips and still keep my data via dirty flashing? Any negatives to doing this?

Yes, as far as I know, if on stock OOS, you download the full zip (over 1GB in size), flash that in TWRP, and then flash root solution right after (before leaving TWRP) to prevent it being overwritten by the stock recovery.
I don't think dirty flashing has any downsides, but if you do end up running into issues, a clean flash usually solves them
