First of all, im new on these forums, so hello everyone
I have experience rooting, custom rom'ing and such from my Samsung Spica i5700, but dealing with ARC S roms and unlocking seems to be a whole different world!
So, the .62 update hit me, and ofcourse without reading XDA, I updated my -only- rooted phone. Now I have the bloatware back and cannot root, blasphemy!
So I thought about unlocking the bootloader, there comes the first question
- Does the automatic root kit (DoomLords thread, v4 by now) work with .62 that has had i'ts bootloader unlocked (he mentioned it DOES NOT work with stock .62)? If it does not, which tutorial or tool should I use? Ive seen Flashtool being used, and something about flashing whole new stock roms?
Now also, I am a big fan of custom roms - but the default rom of ARC S has some great things I've noticed and use alot, so I would love to keep those. As I was looking into Arconium 6.1 rom (nearly perfect it says!), I would love to know if it has the following things still available
- Sim Toolkit, known also as STK. Because in my country we have Mobile ID cards integrated into SIM cards, so basically I can use my phone to prove my identity and give digital signatures wherever I go. This is a must have for me.
- The phone has Sony Ericsson menu under Settings. Under there, I can connect my phone to my PC over WiFI (if it has PC companion installed) - I love this feature as I dont have to connect the cable, or mess about with slow Bluetooth speeds. Does the Arconium have this capability?
The stock rom is good enough, atleast for the moment, but I love getting more out of my device. Although if it means losing those two features, I will probably stay with stock rom, and just try to root it, and remove all the bloatware.
I have been reading the forums, but lot of different threads, and they all tend to say some different things. Confusing to say the least! Also tried searching the Arconium thread about SimToolkit, only had some questions about version 3. So again, no info there.
If any of you could give me any insight into these matters, would be very lovely. Would save alot of time by not installing Roms and such that do not even suit the needs.

No, it only works until .62 firmware (e.g .42 & .58 firmware).
Search a little about how to root .62 firmware.
Or you could downgrade to .42 firmware using Flashtool and root.

Afaik, it has the same Connectivity settings in SE settings as stock ROM.

V6 Supercharger would be also great if you only want to root and remove all bloatware.
Definitly try arconium 6.1, it's awesome and super fast

But the kernels - lot of people using DoomKernel, and then the one dp94 mentioned V6 Supercharger. Benefits - downsides to both of them? Dont care much for overclocking, because the performance of 1.4 Ghz single core is more enough for me (atleast for the time being). Would love better batterly life and/or performance without overclocking.
As far as I understand, the best way to do things is unlock bootloader, root, install CWM on phone, then let it install the CWM recovery, and from there just apply the custom roms?

V6 Supercharger is a script, not a kernel.
You should definitely try DooMKernel. It's the best combination of battery life (recommend to try -36 baseband) and perfomance.
And you have to flash kernels using fastboot.

After looking for ways to root .62, and not finding anything - I felt like an idiot.
Then suddenly I realized what I had read about Doomkernel - it does root and CWM automatically!
Now running DoomKernel and Arconium
Would love to run CMmod, but as far as I can see, it is still missing HDMI and FM.

Yes, that's correct.
Atm, these features are only working with stock based ROMs.
I have the R800i and I've been using stock GB since day 1. On other devices, galaxy phone to mention, i use paranoid since i discovered it, the best to me.
I gave up looking for custom ICS roms around March as camera and other things were never working. I would have never thought to see paranoid on the play some day!
So I'm happy. But wondering... First thread didn't mention things not working, does it means EVERYTHING works well? Also, is the ram available bigger than stock gb? Cause this is a pain actually, barely no multitasking...
Last but not least: i didn't unlock bootloader but i installed cwm and hard at that time later we could install custom roms without unlocking bootloader... Is that the case now finally? Would make the process less long and risky... On galaxy is soo easy to flash customs!
Add: Is there a good touch recovery like siyah on galaxy s2? Again like siyah is there a kernel for the play that support dual boot? I'm probably just dreaming...

if u want touch recovery, u can use Doom's kernel, CWM with touch support is included although touch in cwm is pretty much gimmick, IMHO
but it means u have to unlocked your bootloader, which i think shouldn't be a problem for GSM user
as for ICS, there's several good ICS Rom, but i think ICS from Markphyton is the best for now, especially if u want everything working
It is true that you can install some roms without unlocking your bootloader, but not the ones that require another kernel. Every ICS rom does need another kernel, so you'll have to unlock it. Since it's an R800i, it shouldn't be too hard though. If you really don't want to unlock it, you can use a rom like Gin2JB, which looks like it's Jellybean, but is in fact Gingerbread. There is a kernel that supports dual-booting, created by KeiranFTW: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1508017
I should note that because the recovery partition (CWM) is inside the kernel on the Xperia Play, meaning you can't flash kernels from the phone. You will need a PC for that.
Thanks for the answer. I installed the jelly bean styled Rom last night, nice for now. Look at siyah kernel on the galaxy s phone, it has a great touch recovery!

Pm me and i will help you trought the process of unlocking the bootloader and flashing what ever you want falshed on your phone. The paranoid rom is infact my daily drive on my xperia play 800i as well. Tho i might trow some CM 10 on it again once camara is working on those cm10 roms.

Still it's like to know : how much free team do you have after installing paranoid? On stock custom you get about 200 mb

I will own an Xperia Play soon.
(EDIT)If it helps: It will be an Xperia Play in White. I read that it may be R800i... don't know what's meant and what differences are. (Because there is R800x, R800a...)
I found out, that you can install ROMS, and do a lots of stuffs (well, it's Sony) if you flash it or something...
My question:
After searching the Board for how to flash it, i realized that I don't know so much about the Xperia Play and where I should begin.
I ask you, how do I flash it, what about the ROMs and what should I know about it, I mean, what does this flashing give to me? (I know about the risks since I'm hacking and flashing PlayStation Consoles...) Is there more things I can do then with it?

U can flash custom kernel and custom rom to PLAY
For kernel, it normally will give u more freedom to play with you device cpu speed and some tweaks related to it (like i/o and else) some kernel also bring support to more advanced setup option for your device
To flash custom kernel u will need unlocked bootloader.
As custom rom, i believe u will understand what it can do by browse through development section..
Normally we flash the rom via CWM recovery (which normally come together with custom kernel)

If I understand right, I have found in this Wiki (where I looked for some Answers) a Link to a bootloader unlocker (incl. Guide) and I should follow all the steps. Is it important to know, which version I have?
As custom rom, i believe u will understand what it can do by browse through development section..

I know, I'm noob. Hope I get some more answers. I want to "unlock" my phone (which I received today (AWESOME HAPPY ) ) as soon as possible ^^
I saw awesome THEMES for that phone and want to apply them.
Getting the Custom Kernel to my phone will give me access to install games the so called illegal way? You may know what I mean... after getting the software just installing it and the phone doesn't .. you know what I mean.

I am running the .62 official rom and looking for a bloat/crap free ROM to use with my Arc-S. It is a bootloader locked and cannot be unlocked so I need a working rom.
ICS is too slow for me. I can install CWM with x-parts so that works, I have installed some custom ICS roms from CWM backup zips and it works but I can't find any for the GB.
I am hoping for a very rustic base rom with no crap installed. I found a few like X-Gamer but they require the .42 official rom first and I cannot find any working link for it.
Hoping someone can help, I have done quite a bit of searching and really looking to put an end to this journey!

Hmm... It is not possible to run jellybean/kitkat without unlocked bootloader, so you have no choice but to use ics ICS has awesome batery life BTW.
Have you tried Xperia ultimate hd by jader? Its not bad. It has aroma installer, so u can unselect those crappy apps.

1. You're not allowed to create threads that ask for fastest ROM, or "speedy ROM" as you put it. Please change thread title or a mod will close your thread.
2. Since you're on locked bootloader, you have no choice but to stick with stock based custom ROM. UHD is one good example. However, if it doesn't suit you, you will have to find out for yourself. None of the users or the developers can help you here since you're the one using the phone.

ICS consumes more battery as a base ROM as compared to GB since it uses more resources and has more functions. Please do not give wrong information. The few ways to help ICS save battery are ROM tweaks, kernel tweaks and basic knowledge about maintaining your ROM to make it less power hungry.
If he prefers performance over functionality, GB will be a better choice for him.

Doesn't mean he cannot flash custom ROM. As long as the custom ROM is stock based and uses stock kernel he can flash it with no problems. He can easily use X-Parts to install recovery, flash any stock based custom ROM and use it. Locked bootloader does not allow unsigned kernel(a.k.a any custom kernel) to be flashed on the phone since only Sony can sign the kernels.

Hello I am new to flashing android phones. I am currently using my Xperia Z with Android 4.4.4. But i have heard good things about old phones running new android versions. and since i like to play games, and i used the Xperia Play back in the days I was very curious about using it again. My only problem is. Where to go. I see allot of different things out there. I for example checked out cyanogenmod. But the latest file they have is from 2013-09-29 and seems outdated to me [correct me if I am wrong] I am seeing different roms for different kind of users, but I am not sure what content u want to be different.
So in a nutshell. I just want a full Android experience with better performance. i think lollipop is the way i wanna go.

There arent any official cyanogen mod roms (like kitkat, lollipop) for Xperia play anymore. You have to check the development section for unofficial cyanogen mod builds.
I made the same decision as you I used a Galaxy s3 with Android 4.4.4. But i always wanted to revive my play. I Tried out several roms, Jellybean, Kitkat, Lollipop (All found in development section) but was quite dissapointet. Jellybean had graphical issues and had a poor gaming Performance even with 1.6Ghz overclock. Lollipop isnt stable at all. So i tried out a gingerbread rom with a lollipop theme and now im quite satisfied. Its fast, has a Good gaming Performance and has no problems at all.
Additionally You should use link2sd because the internal memory is small and if you are using an android 4.0.4+ rom greenify is a great way to keep apps from running in the background and using to much ram.
Maybe try out some roms like i did, before you make the play your main device again.
Tutorials for rooting, bootloader unlocking etc. can all be found here.

i guess that is quite recent u tried lollipop? I am hearing good things about old devices running 4.2, but ur not happy with the stability of that on the xperia play? And is it not possible to use sd for half internal space or something like that?
ur talking about the Development section. u mean on xda page? I am not that familiar with xda for now. if u got a link in some directions. would be appreciated
Edit: I also checked android.gs. Recommended by some peeps. but still i have no clue where to start. I still think Cyanogenmod is the way i whanna go if u whant stability. And is it recommended to use ''SuperOneClick'' for the Xperia Play?
Edit2: i installed cyanogenmod on my xperia play, but i get ''unsupported Device'' i can press ''Continue Anyway'' but I am not sure that is smart to do. some advice would be nice
Don't be lazy, check sticky threads in Xperia Play section.
Be aware, Xperia Play don't have emulated sdcard. Sdcard is real sdcard and internal available memory is limited.
My advice, use GB stock-based roms for best game perfomance.
Unlock your bootloader and flash Lupus GB kernel for more perfomance (compared to stock) and more internal memory (640MB compared to 380MB that stock have). Use link2SD, app from market, and move your apps to SDcard.
Official, last CM for Xperia Play is CM7. Unofficialy, there are FXP (FreeXperiaTeam) builds that goes up to lolipop. But IMHO, they are lacking in game-support (on lolipop touchpads don't even work, and gamepad buttons is inverted, on jellybean there are lag when pressing touchpads)

I am not lazy. I am just overwhelmed by the content there is out there. this confuses me at where to start for beginners. so ur saying the best way is using lupus not cyanogemod? and what android version is that lupus ur talking about?

maybe we have a miss-communication here, but i heard somewhere that it is possible to install the internal system on the other half of the sdcard. correct me if I am wrong here. Or isn't that what u meant
Lupus is not a rom. Its a kernel. So the two things you can change at your phone are the kernel and the rom. The kernel controls the hardware of your phone, like the maximum clock frequence the cpu can scale up to, the way the ram is handled and partition sizes of the internal memory. Additionally most kernels like lupus include a custom recovery, that is needed to flash roms. The kernel can only be flashed via fastboot. This is why you have to unlock your bootloader. Otherwise you wont have access to the part of your phone where the kernel is stored.
So if you want to flash a rom, you have to flash a kernel first, but not every kernel can be used for every rom. Lupus will work with gingerbread roms only, turbo kernel works on ics and jellybean roms etc. You have to check the different kernel threads to decide which one is best for your needs and fits to the rom you want to flash.

Unlocking bootloader is just that, unlocked bootloader. It is only for purpose to be able to flash custom kernels (other then stock). Since you have done it, you don't have to be bothered with any more info about unlocking bootloader.
Root is different thing. It enable you administartive rights on your phone, so you could change stuff (it would be also overwhelming if i say what stuff). Most (99.99%) custom roms comes pre-rooted and you don't need to bother with it. if you are trying to root stock firmware, keep in mind that zergrush methot for rooting (i think even super-one-click use same method) work for .42 firmware and bellow. For .62 and above firmware use eroot (just google file named "eroot_v1.3.4.exe")
Use flashtool. it's a program for PC from http://flashtool.net for flashing stock firmare (ftf files) and kernels (kernel is with .img extension). If you mess something up, flashing stock ftf is 100% working way to restore phone to working condition.
Also, most (99.99%) of custom kernels have ClockworkMod recovery (or TeamWinProjectRecovery) that you can enter with button when booting (most of times it's vol-, but some of them use 'back" button).
As for internal memory, yes, you can expand it, but it tends to complicate things, so, i wouldn't recommend you to that for now.
Use kernel that matchs the rom you are trying to flash. GB rom won't boot if you have flashed ICS (or JB) kernel.
As for what is better rom/kernel, no one can answer that question (it's just troll food). You have to find yourself what suit your taste.

Ahhh o was thinking i had to root stock in order to install different kernels/roms but if i understand, u only need to unlock the bootloader in order to run different kernels/roms for that.
So flashing a kernel is some sort of way for making a backup?
Edit: Yeah i have .69 i tried super-one-click but it crashed right away. I am already gonna use a different kernel i see not reason why i should root my stock version
Root is different thing. It enable you administartive rights on your phone, so you could change stuff (it would be also overwhelming if i say what stuff). Most (99.99%) custom roms comes pre-rooted and you don't need to bother with it. if you are trying to root stock firmware, keep in mind that zergrush methot for rooting (i think even super-one-click use same method) work for .42 firmware and bellow. For .62 and above firmware use eroot (just google file named "eroot_v1.3.4.exe")

I used "eroot_v1.3.4.exe". Phone seems to be rooted. i got Superuser now. Only when i launch it it shows me ''There are currently no Superuser app policies'' do i need to install something else in in order to use it?
the reason why i whant to root my stock is i whant to have a recovery backup on hand.
i still find some of the tutorials on xda real foggy. so like when i see a kernal i like and i whant to install, i use Flashtool to install them?
its still really confusing which rom works with which kernel. i can't really find a nice thread to look this out

Now you have root. Superuser app is just app that grant other apps root permission. On it's own don't have much to do. When other app ask for root permition, you'll be asked do you want to grant or deny that root permission.
To have recovery on stock kernel, you'll need app for that.
[APP]/[RECOVERY]x-Parts [CWM Installer] [Version 7.0] 29/6/12
Make sure you download v5 (CWM Installer-v5.apk) from attachment, because v7 don't work on Xperia Play
When you have custom kernel, you won't need app for recovery, because recovery is already included in kernel.
You don't need flashtool to install kernel, but it is much easier, with just few click.
Without flashtool, you'll need to put kernel file in same directory where you adb.exe and fastboot.exe is (from android SDK or flashtool folder) and flash it by typing from command promt (i don't even remember exact commands for it, it was so long ago i was flashing that way, that i forgot about it)
And also, flashtool containt windows driver for flash and fastboot mode.
As i said, kernel must be same match as ROM.
Stock kernel, Lupus GB v12, Doomlord V14, Extreme kernel are used for roms based on stock firmware (which is GB) and you can't use ICS, JB, KK or LP roms with those kernels.
Also, most CM roms comes with kernel inside zip file (boot.img) that need to be flashed.
CM7, even it's GB rom must use it's own kernel because it is not stock-based rom and will not work with stock-based kernels.
If you dont have any app that needs superuser rights, then it wont show you anything of course. You could try no-frills cpu control to see that youre rooted for example.
Almost every rom comes with a kernel. So if you download a rom, check the zip-file and if something like boot.img is included in there extract it. This kernel should perfectly work with the rom, because the developer included it, or he build this kernel especially for the rom.
If you succesfully flashed the kernel through fastboot and got the rom to work you can think about using another kernel

Hydrony. U where talking about ur using gingerbread now. u also mentioned try using android 4.0.4+ rom greenify. for lower hardware usage. I cannot find ''rom greenify'' in the development section.

They say ''Have the stock ICS 4.1.B.0.587 full ftf flashed'' i guess that is the CM Kernel right? They are talking about the CM11.0 in the thread titel but i see https://basketbuild.com/devs/LegacyXperia/zeus a CM12.0 version in the folders. does this mean there is an update for this CM, and that i can now go for CM12.0 or is this for other devices? After that they are talking about ''R800i (Play) users need to flash MT25i (Neo L) ftf'' is this something i must do first? and what is it

its hard finding a kernel+rom where i can use Nintendo 64 Emulator without problems. tried 2 so far but they booth keep hanging up. anyone got a link to one i should try?
Yes, I am using a gingerbread rom, because its fast and reliable and all emulators i use (Drastic, n64oid etc.) Run very well.
Greenify is not a rom, its an app thats Working on devices with at least ice cream sandwhich installed. It hibernates all apps, that you dont use at the moment, so they dont waste ram capacity which is quite important on devices with low ram like Xperia play.
Ftf files must be flashed with flashtool. They are the stock firmwares from sony and some custom roms need specific stock Roms as a base. So you should install them before flashing kernel etc. If you dont want to encounter problems

ah oke. So that means i have to download the stock firmware, flash it. And after that, flash the kernel? Is there only one ftf stock firmare file? Or does every different kernel needs a different stock firmware
