Can I still receive OTA updates while rooted and custom recovery? I ask because I am not getting the notification people are talking about. I tried unrooting and it still says I'm up to date. I have TWRP recovery. U would like to receive OTAs at least until Jellybean comes out, then I'll go custom. I'm coming from a Samsung Vibrant that I was really used to updating and it seems like some things have changed since then.

Do you have custom rom? On custom roms there is no notification about OTA updates.
I just made a guide that might help you for stock rooted roms.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1842142
It will take you the Kies route to get your update. I also did not receive a notification.
I do not have a custom Rom. I am using the stock, root injected Rom and TWRP. I have the original recovery of I need it and OTA root keeper. I thawed out all of my frozen bloatware apps, so I should be fairly straight, besides root and recovery.
Also curious if I flash Wildchild's deodexed stock OTA update, would I still be able to get notifications or does that classify as "custom"since it's deodexed?

I assume your guide method will trip the flash counter and I use Triangle away to resolve that? I used the no trip method to get root the first time, that's why I ask about Wildchild's deodexed version because I have flashable one downloaded already if all is well with future OTAs.

Yes, on my guide you will trip the flash counter when you install the custom recovery again in ODIN. But like you said, triangle away and your good.
Where are you located? OTAs are generally sent out in waves, by region i think. Just may not be pushed to your area yet.
And if you are rooted, you can download the updated but it will fail at install.

I'm on the west coast of the U.S. I'm sure I'm not in the wave yet, but I'm impatient (as it seems like most of us in these forums are) and I'm going to flash the deodexed version... now. Thanks for your quick replies and I'm keeping cybrnook's guide for later reference just in case.
Okay, so I flash that root injected OTA update and new modem with no flash counter trip, but now my device status is modified. Can I get future OTA notifications?
I am rooted with cwm and wicked rom v2. I got the notification and was able to download it however when it rebooted and went into cwm recovery and it says aborted and failed.
So I think if you have a custom recovery you will not be able to do ota updates but might be possible for Kies update never tried Kies so not sure

As long as you are on a stock based rom and the ota componets are intact, you should get notified if there is an update.
The update will fail though so you have to either get it as a custom rom or update via kies or odin.
Most people say it fails because of root, but I think it can also fail due to either a custom recovery and/or having a deodexed rom. (Not 100% about that last one though)

Won't brick phone, but you will lose root. There are ways around this... root keeping apps. But if you want to know the best way around it, flash a custom ROM.
What is an easy method to completely unroot my phone?
Full unroot in supersu. Note that if your system status says modified, you cannot get the ota.
Its honestly not worth the trouble imo. We could all be enjoying the next update for a whole month before you ever get it via ota. Just wait till its released and Odin flash the new firmware.

There is already a stock 4.1.2 rooted update.zip file available to update with.
i have same issue,however kies indicates 4.1.1 is up-to-date.
any suggestions for kies issue?
Right now 4.1.1 is up to date I called att they said they found a bug in the internal software so they stopped pushing the update out but it'll be back soon.

Of course. And after promising the update after advertising it they halt it. And they put out no official posting of this that I could find. Or the person you talked to is full of it because they don't know why you have not got it and don't want to bother or don't know how to figure it out. The last is the most likely.
Now of it is true about the bug I wonder if they will push the bug free version out to everyone again.

so did att stop rolling out the update?
You updated via Kies? I believe AT&T is only updating OTA, not through Kies.
Also, I was pure stock, but rooted. The update failed. It left my phone half updated and I couldn't get it to update, even after unrooting. This appears to be what happened to most rooted 4.1.1 phones on AT&T.
I had to flash back to stock via Kies in order for the update to work.

I was on 4.1.1 rooted and updated to 4.1.2 via OTA. What method did you use to re-root your phone?
Oh I'm sorry. Since this is an AT&T forum I just assumed.
I'm sure in a worse case scenario you can just flash it back to stock. I choose to use Kies because then I didn't have to download the correct firmware like you do with Odin.
The flash counter still says 1, but the Device Status did reset to Normal. Of course I lost root.

Rooting for 4.1.2
I'd love to know a proper way to root without tripping the counter on 4.1.2. I rooted the other day and now it wont let me turn on my wifi. Good thing the phone was only a month old lol, new phone is already on the way from AT&T. Any help is greatly appreciated as I have searched and googled already.

I don't think rooting enables tripping the counter. From what I understand, Tripping flash counter occurs when you flash a custom recovery on jellybean. Best method is to just reset the flash counter when you are going to unroot your phone by using the TriangleAway app: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494114

I used mrRobinson's method... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426. You have to use TriangleAway to reset counter.
Hi there,
I haven't been updated on rooting and all that jazz in a while, so please excuse my ignorance.
I have a Galaxy S3 (SGH-T999) on 4.1.2. It's stock rooted, but I don't have a custom Recovery or anything on it. I didn't (and don't) want to trip the root counter.
Is there a way to upgrade my phone to 4.3, have root working, and not trip the root counter? (Basically, what I currently have, except on 4.3)
Also, I Googled this new Knox feature I've seen people talk about, it seems like a lot of people here don't like it-- should I not want it on my phone too?
Happy holidays,
-Proxin
The counter is easy enough to reset if still on 4.1.2, so your best bet is to install a custom recovery through odin, then flash docholiday's 4.3 stock deknoxed rom and the new modem, and the at&t kernel for working wifi. This way you can use triangle away to reset the flash counter. If you install 4.3 with 4.3 firmware, you will not be able to root without tripping the knox counter.
Hope this helps

From what I understood back in the day when I got root, if you installed a custom recovery, you either triggered the counter or lost all your data/wiped the phone. Is that still the case?
Edit: Or was it un-tripping the counter that caused the data to wipe?
If you want 4.3 touchwiz, root, and a warranty, all at the same time, don't take the official update.
Instead, flash the 4.3 ROM zip, 4.3 modem, and a compatible kernel, using twrp or cwm recovery.
If you ever need to odin, do not use any version newer than MD5 or you are stuck with Knox and can never go back.

It still triggers the counter, but it can be reset. It did not wipe my data, but backup just in case. Resetting the counter did not wipe data either. But do not update to the official 4.3 if you want to root and still have a warranty.

Uh oh. I searched around for guides on updating like you guys said, and followed the guide here which promised root, 4.3, and no root counter... and now I can't use root, even though I installed a pre-rooted ROM.
I'm on 4.3 now, but don't have the ability to use root. I don't seem to have the Knox thing though.
I don't understand why I don't have root on a rooted ROM... what should I do?
Edit: This is the exact version I used: root66_TMO_T999UVUEMJC.tar.md5

To fix root, enable developer options by pressing build number 7 times, then enable root access for apps and adb under dev options.
MJC is TW 4.3 which includes knox. AFAIK the root66 version has knox removed from the rom, but it is impossible to remove it from the bootloader.

I checked in developer options after pressing the build number 7 times, but I don't see anything about enabling root in there...
Do I have to re-root somehow? If so, will that throw off the counter?

That's why posts need read completely. It clearly says it will trip the Knox counter in 4.3 in the second paragraph of the first post under "4.3 notes" sorry that happened though.:banghead: Maybe someday someone will come up with a knox bypass in the bootloader.

I don't understand-- it seems like it says Knox is removed in order for root to stick:
4.3 Image Notes: With 4.3 images, KNOX is removed in order for root to stick. This will flag the Knox counter. Once you flash one of these 4.3 images you now have the latest factory stock bootloader, radio, etc. Flashing a prior bootloader can hard/soft brick your device. Please read and understand what you are doing.

I took it to mean root will flag the Knox counter so it has been removed from the images.
The wording is very ambiguous...
I'm pretty close to just nuking my install and starting over with CyanogenMod, not caring if I trip the counter or not. Is it possible to do so with the current setup, or will I end up with a brick/semibrick somehow? I figure I might as well, since rooting will likely trip the counter anyway.

So yes, it's possible to get CyanogenMod working without a brick or semi-brick coming from this version I installed?
Yes, I could have been worded better. You can flash other
ROMs but make sure they don't include an older bootloader or your device will brick from what I understand.

I ended up just saying "eff it" and hopped onto CyanogenMod. Probably tripped the root counter, but by now I just don't care anymore.
Thanks for helping me in this thread though, I appreciate it.
Take care and happy holidays.
You did trip the Knox counter.
Just so anyone else reading this thread knows, if you value your warranty DO NOT UPDATE TO 4.3 VIA ODIN . Instead, flash the 4.3 rom , kernel, and modem zips in CWM or TWRP recovery.
Do not Odin MJC (or MK4 for you T999L people) if you want root and warranty, as once you are on the Knox boot loader you can't go back.

One of the things that bugs me about forums, finding information is a pain the butt. I just want to get my device back to stock so I can get OTA updates, GPS doesn't suck, and can use Wifi. I don't care about root anymore or using custom roms. I'm learning Objective C right now to branch into iOS development. I'm sick of the Android ecosystem, to be frank.
I'm on Wicked Rom with Android v4.1.1
Baseband T999UVDMD5, Kernal 3.0.65-DeviantKernel_07
I'm downloading T999UVUEMJC_T999TMBEMJC_TMB.zip right now, along with root66_TMO_T999UVUEMJC_2.7z
Which one do I need to flash? if root66 gives me root, then cool I'll take it, but as I said, I don't care. I'll be using Mobile Odin since I'm on a mac and I sold my PC. If I need to install Windows via bootcamp then so be it, but I really don't want to.
If I need to update the rom, kernel, modem, etc all separately where do I find those files? *scratches head*
I'm on 4.1.2 but with the mk7 basband.. is there a flashable file so I can put it back to stock so I can do the official 4.3 update? I think I rather have that even tho I can't go back to any 4.1.x.. having too many issues with 4.3 roms without the updated bootloader, kernels are even.messing up camera etc. So I'm figuring do the update so I don't need a custom kernel.. or is there a flashable STOCK kernel I can flash so I can use Triangle Away and then just do the OTA update.. just frustrated as hell trying to troubleshoot everything.. I respect and thank all the devs I'm sure its either user error or my misunderstanding and knowledge. Never had this type of struggling with any devices from my HTC HD2, SGS2, SGS3, .. I'm just gonna chunk it up to being remedial or something and acknowledge defeat on this Device

If you are interested, I have debloated the Stock 4.3 ROM, rooted it and packed it with TMBBMD1 bootloader.
This ROM has the stock kernel, I have been running it for a while so far no issues. I am planning on uploading it on XDA.
If not, the easiest option would be to
1) Flash MrRobinsons, stock rooted TMBBMD1 ROM
2) Run triangle away to reset counter.
3) Uninstall SuperSU, this can be done from the application itself.
4) Perform a factory reset
Now your phone will be on stock 4.1.2 and if you check for updates you will get the 4.3 OTA.
