I have tried to research but cannot find anything specific to my problem. I know there are a number of guides that show how to flash a Sprint Galaxy Nexus to Cricket, but that's not exactly relevant here and I'm not familiar (or smart) enough to make sense of what may have caused my problem. So I'm resorting to XDA for help.
The problem: my Sprint GNex (toroplus) has significant MMS problems. Anytime I flash a ROM, the MMSC URL is reset back to Cricket (http://mms.mycricket.com/servlets/mms]). Problems are improved but still exist when I use CDMA Tools to change the URL to Sprint (http://mms.sprintpcs.com).
ROM: Cyanogenmod 10.1.3
Recovery: TWRP 2.7.1.0
Radios: GJ04 (CDMA & LTE)
Stock messaging app
Does anyone know what may be causing this? Please help! Thanks
Additional information:
After updating my MMSC URL with CDMA Tools, my MMS still don't always send properly, and if they do send they're sometimes very delayed (e.g. I recently sent 3 pics to a friend, 2 went through properly, one went through the following day). Or, I sometimes don't receive MMS at all, and I've noticed it may happen with any of my contacts on occasion, but some specific contacts I'll never receive MMS from (an alert may show up from that user along with another SMS/MMS alert, but no message from that user appears in the conversation list).
The phone is indeed activated on Sprint. Calling, data, and SMS all work fine. I'm currently on Cyanogenmod 10.1.3, but I previously was on CM 10.2, CM 10.2.1, and a few different CM 11 Snapshots (which is when I first began noticing significant MMS problems), not necessarily in that order. I also tried flashing another ROM (to see if this could possibly be a CM related problem), but the MMSC URL also reverted back to Cricket when I flashed Omnirom. So this doesn't appear to be ROM specific.
I flashed the radios from the following thread, and have been on GJ04 for a long time. I cannot recall if flashing the radios was around the same time I first noticed MMS problems. But given that no one on that thread has complained about Sprint MMS problems, my guess is this isn't the cause.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-nexus/sprint-develop/sprint-radio-collection-t2195481
I bought my Toroplus used, although I believe it was (Sprint) stock at the time. I activated it with Sprint without any problems. I rooted it and do not recall any problems with MMS for months.
Thanks again

Hey all,
Hoping that someone here has some insight with regard to a problem I am having with MMS.
Firstly, let me say that I have had no problems sending and receiving MMSes on my original HTC ROM, nor with Modaco 3.x ROMs.
Recently, I started trying out some of the cooked 2.1 ROMs appearing on XDA, and I am loving them. However, for the life of me, I cannot get MMS to work. I've tried CKDroid, Villian and jnwhiteh's AOSP 2.1 ROMS, and all do the same thing.
I have confirmed that my APN settings are 100% correct by reverting back to an old Nandroid backup from when I had the original ROM installed. I copied those to the LETTER, and still no luck. A work colleague has a G1 with the latest Cyanogen ROM, and I've tried his settings too. I've even flashed Cyanogen's APN list on the three ROMs I've tried, to no avail.
I can only conclude that something in AOSP 2.1 is not quite right. I'm aware that some people are having success with MMS though, and I cannot really explain this. My theory is that perhaps they have a singular APN for both internet and MMS. My Network provider requires two. Perhaps it is this "switching" between the two that is not working correctly. However, I have also tried leaving ONLY my MMS APN installed, also without success. I guess that kinda blows my theory out the water.
Pretty sure I've tried everything imaginable without having any deeper knowledge of what goes on in the background (which is why I am appealing to the boffins here).
Any help / advice would be greatly appreciated!
I've only used the Kagudroid and Modaco ROMS. And MMS works fie on Kagudroid, so maybe give that a go?
just tried on Villian 1.2. and it works, I have as well special MMS APN. I assume you have it, but just make sure you have type=default set for the network ( not MMS ) APN.
Wow, okay thanks, I'll give that a shot!
Just to give this problem a bit od support, i have also had an MMS problem, but i have to admit i have only been using Modaco 2.9 and 3.1.
If i am on Wifi or 2G and i want to send or recieve MMS the phone will temporarily connect to 3G and download the message and then revert back. If i am already connected through 3G the phone wont download or send the message.

UPDATE: I am officially sick and tired of typing in the same APN settings over and over again, but I can now at least officially confirm that MMS (perhaps where two APNs are used) is working in both Villain 1.2.1 and KaguDroid 1.3. Identical settings do not work in CKDroid or jnwhiteh's AOSP 2.1.
What does this mean? What makes Villain and Kagu different? I believe Kagu is based on an HTC kernel, could this be it?
Either way, I hope that this information will assist the devs working on custom ROMs in finding a solution for people like kkoouu and myself. Clearly there is a problem in the mix *somewhere*.
Hi - I too have been having this problem. It works fine with Modaco 3.1, but not with Espresso Hybrid nor Villain.
Could you detail step by step how you got it working? I've never changed any APN settings ( indeed I don't know what my settings are or how to change them! ).
cheers
Villain doesn't include a huge APN list like Modaco, so you will have to input your APN settings manually. You can get these from your Modaco ROM (write them down), and input them into Villain.
Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Mobile networks -> Access Point Names
The key seems to be that you MUST have "default" under TYPE for your internet APN, and "mms" for your MMS APN.
VERYYY Silly question -- do you have to have data-network on to send MMS?
I thought not - but I just tried it and it worked

What did you think a mms was sent with? MMSes are always sent vie data-network only sms work via standard gsm.

Where did you check your setting or what did you use to compare them with.
I for example am on T-Mobile in Germany. On every custom Rom I've noticed a wrong mms apn. The mmsc was always http://mms.t-d1.de but the correct one is http://mms.t-mobile.de/servlets/mms. The port was different too.
I don't know which apn list the devs are using but the apn, at least for mms with t-mobile d, are just wrong.
Correcting them solves the issue and mms can be sent and received.

Looked on orange website to compare the settings. All correct. But since the minor update 2.0.1 i havent tried mms as yet, but hopefully its fixed.
Well, this is an odd issue and i'm sure many other have it because all of my friends with GS3's have this problem. I have a rogers GS3, my friend has a Telus and other videotron and multiple times a week, when we try to send a moderate or long sms (3 lines and more) the phones fails to send the message. This is very odd because i've tried everything from a factory reset, full odin wipe, different roms, and nothing works. I'm on CM10 M2 now and the problem is also there.
When i try to send a long sms, it fails, then i sent a short one right after, it works, then i copy and resetn the original one that failed and it faisl again. I pretty sure many of you have it because we have 3 different GS3 on 3 different networks and it happens to all of us
I tried looking around, i have not found much, maybe somebody has such problem and perhaps a solution?
This happened to me earlier this morning. No idea what can even cause an issue like this.
nobody??? im sure many people have this
I think this is based on all aosp roms.
I don't know if it's fact or opinion, but I always get the "sent" message after receiving the "not sent" error.
In other words, it seems like it still sends the whole text, but just throws you an error initially.
Can someone correct me if I'm wrong?
Well i can correct you wrong because i've tested it it does not sent the messages nor does it have anything to so with AOSP roms because i've used both AOPK and they both have the issue,
I send long sms no problem.. some in fact so. Long it automatically breaks them into two. What firmware are you on.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
First off this belongs in Q&A so I will move it
Second AOKP is also considered an AOSP type ROM
There should be an option in your mms app to split messages over 160 characters. Make sure it is checked.
On the Touchwiz ROMs that came with the SIII and all TW custom ROMs this is not an issue. This is a Touchwiz phone so changing your ROM to anything but that will have some bugs and require fixes and workarounds.

Do other apps work? I use ChompSMS (fixes lots of annoying bugs in the TW SMS app) and I can send long messages fine.

i have to disagree. I had like i said in OP, i tried ALL roms, stock, stock rooted, cyanogen and many other, this was an issue in all roms.

are you using a mms app other than what's provided with the rom? And are you able to send any messages at all? or does it fail to send only on long ones?
If you were on stock and still can't send any/long messages, check your apn settings and make sure it's correct for your provider, especially if you are installing roms (stock or custom) that are specifically developed for AT&T phones. From your profile I'm assuming you have a Canadian version.
Check the APN settings. If that's all correct, return the phone for a new one
all apn settings are fine and this is not an issue with the phone because like i said, it would be one hell of a coincidence if this happened to both of my friends with gs3s on different providers. Also i am using stock sms app and this only happens with moderately long sms, it doesnt always ahppen, its random
If it's intermittent, and it's not just you but also your friends, it sounds like a provider problem. From what I have been reading on different forums, it seems service in Canada has been sketchy because they're adding LTE towers everywhere.
I don't know if that's really the case, but all I can say is texting works well for me down here on the AT&T network, both on AOSP (which also includes AOKP as you were mistaken earlier) and stock-based ROMs, although I do get the error on AOSP based roms for long messages. I've asked my friends and they say they receive the whole message just fine.
Last thing I can think of is if you flashed a custom kernel and it messed with some of your drivers. I know KToons kernel has modified drivers, and you're supposed to flash the stock kernel provided in that thread if you're going back to stock. Try that and see if that fixes your problem.
yup, i've flashed ktoon kenel as i had major issues with faux kernel as per this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1937476
i'll report back in a week to see if any different
thanks for you help
Hi folks,
Sometimes I can't receive picture messages and I can never send them to my wife's telus phone. They show up as white squares with no text included. Anybody had this or can provide suggestions? I have tried many things so far. Full story below...
Thanks
**************************
I have a Telus T989/ S2X. I have had it for 1.5 yrs and have flashed numerous ROMS since I rooted it about a year ago. Over this time I have had MMS issues on and off.
From early ICS ROMS (darkside) and now to Jelly Bean roms (CM10 nightly, Jedi Jelly, Slim-Star...and more) I have had a strange issue. I can send picture messages to almost everyone and receive from almost everyone. Occasionally I have an issue receiving from friends on the Rogers/ Fido network and it stalls at 'downloading'. I tried unchecking auto-retrieve and it does not fix it. I have also tried multiple radios on multiple roms.
More recently my msgs cannot be viewed when I send them to my wife's phone ( I know, a blessing sometimes right?). She is on the same network (Telus) and has no problem sending/ receiving from anyone. When I send to her it shows as a white/ blank square and none of the text I typed shows up. Regular text are no problem ever.
I called Telus support and they ran me through checking the APN settings and a bunch of other tests sending pics back and forth and no fix. They are going to escalate the problem. I tried the trick of sending yourself a picture via gmail too without any luck. I didn't tell them I was rooted and on 4.1.2....but I have tried tons of diff roms and done a bunch of searching on the forums and google.
Just today I tried the Koodo 4.0.4 rooted ROM with no luck. Then I got pissed off and backed everything up and rolled back to the Telus 2.3.5 Gingerbread ROM. Guess what? MMS worked just fine!!?? I double checked the APN settings and they were identical.
So....has anyone else had this issue? I don't want to be stuck on Gingerbread just to use MMS. Could it be that the newer versions of the MMS/ SMS have issues? I noticed that when I went back to 2.3.5 it said "converting to MMS" when I attached a pic. I never see that in any other ROM.
Any suggestions or solutions that people have come across? I am slightly frustrated....especially since my wife's Nexus S has no problems and my S2X is way better but failing.
Thanks for your time and thoughts folks!

maybe u were send pics that were larger than the network supports. Hypothetically telus may only support 5meg attachments while Rogers/Fido does 10 ( I think this is actually the case but I'm not 100% sure). Use a third party app like hand cent or gosms that supports MMS compression and see how u fair

It seems like some are getting through with Handcent. So the stock app in CM10 is not working then? I should try different size files maybe to see if that is a factor like you said.
Hi all,
It has been a while since I've used the phone, and my fiancee wants to use it, so I fired it up again. However, I have noticed a problem, which I've actually always had, but which annoys her - MMS is not working.
Android versions:
I'm using the latest unofficial CM10 build floating around. I have previously also tried Jellytime, but it was even worse (see below).
Problem:
Whenever she tries to send an MMS, it basically knocks out data. I have googled, and seen that many others have had this problem. Data connection basically drops, the bar goes grey, and it won't return until i re-register the phone on the network, reboot, goes to flightmode or back, etc. Internet works, as long as I don't send any MMS-messages. I am unable to received them as well.
I have tried:
- googling my ass off,
- the official APN settings (one for web, one for mms),
- resetting APNs,
- default,supl + default,supl,mms as types,
- combining into one APN,
- various APN apps,
- reinstalling ROM,
- other ROM builds (Jellytime, was even worse, could only get data connection, when wifi was on and connected to a network, after a while i could then disable wifi and it would keep the data connection for a few hours).
- lots of other stuff...
Any ideas welcome.
Have you tried going back to stock?

Going back to android 2.x stock is not an option, sadly.
I do know that MMS worked fine when I got the phone some years ago. On a different network provider, though.
CM 9 and higher have issues with MMS as far as I know.
CM7 hasn't got any issues. And I believe each thread as a fix
- Sent from Guy's Super Duper S3
Very frustrating issue seems to have developed for me over the past month or two in which MMS cannot be sent or received while I'm connected to WiFi. If I disconnect and switch over to LTE, MMS messages are received almost immediately and I can send them with no problem.
This is on AT&T using CM11 nightly 20140913. I used many nightlies prior to that over the summer and cannot recall when the issue developed, or if it began after a certain nightly.
I've seen this very issue (MMS problems while WiFi is connected) discussed sporadically for many other devices. Some blame it on Hangouts, but I have tried AOSP Messaging, chompSMS, and others, and it doesn't change anything. I'm *positive* that my APN is set properly (mmsc.mobile.att.net, proxy.mobile.att.net, port 80); it's also set both in the main system menu and manually in each SMS app I've tried. I can only conclude it's either an issue with CM11 or a carrier problem that has recently developed.
It's worth noting that chompSMS has a menu option that specifically forces a switchover from WiFi to mobile data when MMS is being sent/received. Even checking that option doesn't solve my problem. This makes me wonder if, perhaps, it's a ROM issue wherein the WiFi cannot be disconnected properly for this purpose? Has anyone else noticed this behavior on recent CM11 nightlies?
So I just did a nandroid backup and then flashed nightly 20141016. Sure enough, the newer nightly solves the MMS issue. However, WiFi hotspot is broken, as it has been for me on nightlies for several weeks now (thus, why I'm still running a month-old one). Too bad I don't have any backups from before the MMS bug appeared.
EDIT: Apparently this was a CM11 bug fixed on or around the 20140917 nightly. Where might I be able to find that nightly to give it a shot? At some point after 20140913, WiFi hotspot was broken, but hopefully there's a sweet spot in there somewhere. I've verified that hotspot is kaput on the M11 release. Really hoping to avoid a factory reset/clean flash if possible right now.
