AT&T buys T-Mobile US - uh-oh

I wonder what that means for us HD7 WP7 users. I also wonder if the bands will remain the same forever, or if there will be changes down the road. Could this be one possible reason for the delay of updates on WP7? My guess is yes, because two WP7 carriers in such talks would push everything else aside to complete them.

The acquisition or merger will not be complete till sometime next year.
There is nothing to suggest that this news will hinder the update plans.

Only thing, though, as was the case with Sony and RIM, when two companies are involved with other dynamics, current affairs tend to take a back seat. That's how it was with Sony while they were in legal proceedings with RIM over some issue I can't remember. But when the proceedings were completed, RIM started putting out all manner of new devices and Sony started putting out some new portable stuff.

This blows. I currently have the HD7 on T-mobile. I hate At&T and would want to move to Sprint if this goes through.

The only thing bad about AT&T compared to T-Mobile is the pricing, and the fact that T-Mobile has free roaming to make up for their terrible Voice Coverage (Data Coverage is still pretty crappy).
AT&T Actually has been putting up new towers here, T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon haven't been adding anything and none of them get any coverage here: T-Mobile Roams and that's free so if you only need voice coverage I guess it works. AT&T put up a new 3G tower a mile away.
It won't mean anything for AWS Band phone users.
The same thing happened when AT&T Brought Cingular, and Sprint brought Nextel. There are still iDen phones out there working, almost a decade or so later...

Metro PCS practically doesn't exist around here, and Virgin/Boost are both terrible around here because Sprint has terrible coverage. Almost as bad as T-Mobile, with only 1/3rd the 3G speeds and worse phone choices.
Hopefully the influx of customers into AT&T and the larger infrastructure leads them to compete more rigorously with Verizon when it comes to pricing, since in about 2 years or so they can mitigate a lot of the coverage differences...

MetroPCS is a subsidy of Sprint.
Not sure who owns Virgin though.

My bad, I was thinking of Boost Mobile. The PCS in the name suggested that it was Sprint (Sprint PCS with the red wings and a pin )
Any way MetroPCS footprint is sooooo small they might as well get under Sprint.

Compared to T-Mobile's selection, AT&T's selection is much better...though I do agree their selection could be much better with more desired smartphones.

Metro PCS, and Cricket are all under Leap Wireless, I think. Yes they are small.
I hope AT&T grandfather us T-Mobile users in. AT&T plans are outrageous.

What? AT&T actually has a better selection of phones than Verizon. The only thing that sucked was their selection of Android phones, but that was remedied quickly after they lost iPhone exclusivity.
They have the best selection of Blackberries.
They've generally carried more Windows Mobile and Symbian Phones than the competitors.
They have the iPhone, and they have both mid-range and high end Android phones.
They carried the Pre and Pixi Plus.
Now that they've lost iPhone exclusivity, their phone selection actually got better.
One has to be blind to actually say AT&T's phone selection sucks. They are the only carrier without a clear bias when it comes to smartphone OSes. Yes, they pushed their exclusive iPhone, but they carry/carried literally everything else from Android to WP7... Verizon and T-Mobile (and now even Sprint) all seem to care pretty much only about Android. Verizon cares about the iPhone because they wanted to leech customers from AT&T, but I guess that didn't work as planned since the lines were embarassingly thin when that launched...
Also, LTE is a GSM technology so eventually every major carrier will migrate to that. AT&T (GSM) buying T-Mobile (GSM) just makes it easier for them to transition to LTE, gives them greater capacity, and gives them the largest 4G LTE coverage area of all the major carriers.
Also, I believe Virgin is owned by Sprint as well.

I got away from Cingular/AT&T as fast as I could in the past. I despised their service, their pricing, and their overall level of customer support. I could not stand the position I was in with them, and honestly, I've never had a single problem with T-Mobile...
However, I am not as pessimistic about this announcement as the rest of the T-Mobile world is. I see this as a potential win-win for both parties, which will eventually become one. T-Mobile has the right idea for everything plan oriented in my eyes, but they've never had the superior budget and revenue that AT&T and Verizon have. This allows them to have the cash flow to implement ideas. I do think AT&T has seen T-Mobile's success, which is obviously why they went after them. I do believe they will incorporate the best of both worlds... these companies aren't juggernauts because they've made the wrong decisions their entire existence... I promise you that. It also gives them both a much stronger spectrum and coverage. There are places I have perfect service and an AT&T user didn't, and vice versa... This eliminates that... It'll obviously take a great deal of time, but it's going to improve the service.
I won't be 'jumping ship' like the Magenta lovers on TmoNews are announcing... I'm looking forward to the positives. I'm also looking forward to the decrease in Android superiority in my handset selection. I guess time will tell all.

Problem is if this is the kind of thing you get from at&t now, how much worse will it be when they have more customers and have to throttle everybody: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KupMmHfRWzQ&feature=player_embedded#at=12. Tmobile has been good with not messing with phone capability or trying to hoodwink customers, with only at&t as the sole GSM provider there is no choice for anyone who travels a lot and wants to avoid ridiculous roaming fees.

AT&T has proven to take good qualities and utilize them... Like Rollover when they acquired (re-aquired?) Cingular. You have to understand, they are going to have T-Mobile towers now, already running HSPA+ which keeps getting better... I'm sure in this year they are going to be getting their HSPA up to T-Mobile standards so when they switch happens its perfect. Then you have an amazing infrastructure to establish your LTE network. I'm personally being optimistic here... You gain nothing in life being pessimistic, especially about a service you're bound to.

Unsatisfied with the customer service and network stability of AT&T... Not sure what would happen when T-mobile users are added in.
Also I'm worried if AT&T would have less motivation to build tower after T-Mobile is acquired.

AT&T & T-Mobile aren't the only competing mobile providers... AT&T still has a variety of other carriers to compete with. To think they're going to stand around and do nothing now is ridiculous, and honestly, Verizon is their bigger competition... this just gives AT&T more towers and more power to implement features... Also provides T-Mobile's know-how and very well created/handled HSPA+...

This is great news for me as a AT&T customer where I work which is in an Automotive Paint shop AT&T barely comes in but T-Mobile comes in great so hopefully the towers will share the same signals...
We do however have a contract with Verizon and they have equipment within our facility that boosts the CDMA signal which we have found does sometimes cancel out the GSM network but on rare occasions...
I just prefer AT&T as I use Uverse and love it and really like the rollover minute plan and how I can use the free wifi everywhere through AT&T...
My main concern is since AT&T bought T-Mobile how long will it take before AT&T will be able to start accessing the T-Mobile towers and vice versa?

Verizon and Android phones...

Never really thought about Verizon but I'm to the point were I've had it with sprints ****ty service, so i got a few questions im a little hesitant about jumping to Verizon since their Android lineup seems lackluster (getting the nexus but probably only for a year then would get another phone) anybody hear anything about them acquiring better Android phones in the future, also been to the development section an don't see much activity going on for the LTE version any reason for this? Maybe due to how new it is? Any comments about Verizon as a service provider would be welcome also...

In my opinion, Verizon gets a pretty good lineup of phones. The Galaxy Nexus, Rezound, Razr, etc. As far as a carrier, very expensive but you get what you pay for.

Verizon gets pretty good Android handsets IMO.
I just recently moved one of my AT&T lines to Verizon. Prior to that I was with Sprint. Sprint's data speeds were horrendous in my area and EVERY area in traveled too. I can't even imagine what its like after the Iphone release. Voice was always good on Sprint. AT&T's data blew sprint out of the water. Verizon is as good if not quite as fast 3g wise as AT&T but its incredibly reliable. 4g is blazing. 3g speeds are usually 1 - 1.8mbs on Verizon 3g. 4g pushes 15mbs. AT&T's 3g was anywhere from 800k to 4mbs. Verizon is definitely more stable and works in more places.
Both are leaps and bounds better than Sprint. Also with Sprints $10 premium add on its the same price as Verizon if you use Google voice or another data type service for texting. Which is what I do and saves me the $20 a month. I don't need many minutes since if I get low I can use google voice and GrooveIP for free minutes. Once its set up and configured it works great even over 3g.
In other words, jump ship the grass is greener. Sprint's service has taken a dump the last few years and they run a serious risk of bankruptcy before they can put all the spectrum they have to any real use. They have made one mistake after another after another for a long time now.

The LTE roms are on another site mostly.

Significant amount. LTE is quite the battery drain. All depending on use patterns of course.

It's really not that bad. I mean if you hammer it on LTE it will drain quicker than usual but it's not this destroyer of batteries that people make it out to be.

while LTE may destroy ur battery, u can always turn it off till u need it. there is plenty of dev support for the LTE version, and verizon's network coverage destroys all other three carriers put together.
also.. if u are going to pay for a data plan anyways, might as well enjoy the subsidy.

The GSM version works on all providers in all countries all over the earth. The LTE version works on one provider, in one country.
I think the GSM-model simply has what you may refer to as a "immensely much bigger user-base" and hence more developers than what's when you look at the cold, hard facts, is basically a carrier-phone, available on one carrier only.

If you travel out of the country often get GSM. Otherwise get the LTE model. People wanna make LTE out to be some battery black hole but its not. Sprint vs vzw is no contest. Verizon 3g is actually usable and 4g knocks my socks off. It maintains 25 megs on a heavily loaded network and gives me 50+ when its lightly loaded. Honestly development is not really a problem for me because ICS is so good.

It's going to vary largely due to many factors. What's your signal strength, how many other people are using 4G in your area, etc...
I was traveling through Baltimore, MD and was managing only 12 MBPS with 1 bar of signal strength on New Years Eve, which honestly, is easily more than enough for anything. Keep in mind, as time goes on, more people get 4G phones, and use them more, available bandwidth is going to go down anyway. I don't understand why people think they should get 20 MBPS anyway....what are you going to do? If you don't have an unlimited plan, what's the point? You'll use up the small amount of data allotment that you have so quick you'll never even know it.

I left Sprint for Verizon 3 months ago, and the extra cost is well worth it - it's like having a landline in my pocket.
As far as your assessment of the Android phone lineup, I'm not sure where you're coming from. I think they have a great lineup, although certainly it's slanted toward the Motorola line. With Google buy Motorola mobility, that should end up being a very good thing.
I also don't think they meddle with the phones nearly as much as ATT does - but I have no direct experience with ATT, just what my friends tell me.

I don't know about all your guys' locations but I live in Mesa, AZ (it is about 30 min from downtown Phoenix). I get VERY slow LTE in the city. Even with 2 bars I get ~5 down and 5 up. As far as signal strength, it isn't much different to any other 4G phones I have used. I get no data in my school's basement and the phone always seems to drop the data service. This morning I had 1X until I restarted the device. At a small town in east AZ, Verizon is the only one with data service, but it is VERY!!!! slow. 3G in Phoenix area is about .8 down (on a good day).

Was hesitant due to what im hearing about battery life on LTE, but i guess I'll deal with battery issue since i do want the 32gig option an I'm hearing nothing but good things about Verizon, any other differences between LTE an GSM version?

I drop Sprint and made the switch to Verizon. I had nothing but network problems on Sprint, crappy speed on 3g/4g network. But one thing I can say is once you make the switch to an LTE phone you’ll never go back to regular 3g/4g service! is like going from DVD to bluray.

Verizon vs. ATT: Is OTA Support the Same?

Hey guys, I currently own a Nexus S 4g on sprint and I'm really considering jumping ship due to the ****ty data speeds, pulled premier program and lack of official CDMA Nexus S support.
My question is this: Is there a similar issue with the CDMA GNex on Verizon? Is it too early to tell?
I desperately want 4g considering the coverage is great in my area, but I'd be willing to trade that to not deal with the same bull**** that my Nexus S on sprint forces me to deal with.
TL;DR Version: Does Verizon GNex have full OTA and Rom support compared to the GSM Unlocked Version on AT&T's network?

Verizon OTAs will be behind GSM generally, but not a discernible amount. The basic thing to know here is that Verizon's CDMA and LTE network stacks are proprietary (closed source) and they have to add it and test it before putting an OTA out. This doesn't have to happen on the GSM model as its standardized and open source.
ROM community should still be pretty strong for the VZW version. But when it comes down to it the base of users using the GSM model around the world is probably larger (and its the official dev phone). There will surely be good community support of both versions.
Thing is that if you care about OTAs you probably don't care about ROMs, and vice versa. Kinda gotta tell us what you care about more. But luckily with the Nexus you'll stay pretty up to date without rooting and ROMing.
The amount of data you will use is 100% based on your usage patterns. Don't let someone else's usage give you an idea of how much you'll use. That's something you should be able to figure out based on your previous usage.
And by the way, there is no AT&T version of this phone. There is the unlocked GSM version, which works on any GSM carrier in the world. The OTAs on that model have nothing to do with what carrier you're currently using (only on the variant of regional software/radio you may or may not have).

Well the data speeds aren't just slower with no benefit. HSPA+ does severely better on battery than LTE does. But the speeds are still very serviceable. IMHO 10mbps is still plenty fast lol.
You also get the benefit of choosing your own carrier. If you're on AT&T or T-Mobile you'll get the same customer service for network issues, you just won't get hardware customer service. With GSM you get to choose any carrier and stay off contract and potentially save a TON of money every month if you decide to go that route. You probably have about 12 carriers to choose from when looking at all the GSM offerings in the US. When you buy the VZW Galaxy Nexus, you're going to be paying Verizon every month for the rest of the time you use that device, and that's it.
This is a much larger question that has been battled in 100's of pages of flaming between VZW and other GSM users. You should read up on those but when it comes down to it just understand that there are pros and cons to both that you should weigh when choosing. As I said you have to decide what's important to you.

The GSM version isn't a 2nd class citizen to the LTE version. Not by a long shot. You shouldn't feel like you're getting the short end of the stick going GSM. Its a world class device.

After looking at some of these no contract prices and considering I can have my Brother's employee edition GSM GNex for free this is looking like the option for me.

Yea I couldn't believe that plan. Seemed too good to be true till I read people actually using it.

Its a pretty amazing plan really. Best deal in wireless in the US today IMHO.

Buyer's remorse?

so i bought the verizon galaxy nexus, and i'm having slight buyer's remorse =/. the LTE network is definitely fast, and ICS is good software but i feel like the GN just had shoddy radios. even with the 4.0.4 update and hybrid radios found on XDA i can't seem to get consistent signal with it.
at most i get 2 bars of 3G or 4G, the hand off between them is **** too. when LTE drops it takes at least a good 10-15 seconds before i either find 3G again or get some network connectivity back. the unfortunate reality is that when LTE terminates the entire network operation can go down temporarily(on the device). i'm in a pretty good metropolitan area for verizon, but sadly I've had better reception on many of T-Mobiles phones on their 3G and HSPA+.
the buyer's remorse is strong with this one =/. i tried the HTC Rezound but the current ICS builds are not that great. and i don't want to be stuck /w an outdated device for too long.
what do you guys think?

The only remorse I had was not pre-ordering mine so it'd arrive sooner.
I haven't had any problems with my radio at all. Best reception I've had in a while.

Could be your area or Verizon's network. It has been on the fritz since it rolled out.

Assuming you have the GSM version though if you're actually on Rogers. Most complaints about signal are coming from VZW people.

Not having an LTE phone doesn't really qualify me to give advice, but I can only assume other LTE phones you have had have worked just fine?

well i haven't really had verizon ever, the "4G" hspa+ phones from tmobile work better than the VZW nexus i have here now...like i said, I ordered the Rezound and tried it, the LTE and overall reception is just plain out far better but at this point it is kind of a sore subject for me. i'm kind of locked to ICS and 720p, but the ICS leaks for the rezound are subpar and just sluggish.. the only reason i went /w VZW was because of the nexus, but i think it would just be more economic and honestly less of a hassle to just go back to t-mobile because of unlocked GSM phones. the CDMA out where i live just proves to be subpar at every corner. i don't really get how VZW and Sprint can stay in business out here(i'm from southeast houston).

Return it and get away from VZW then. Go back to T-Mo and get a HSPA+ Nexus. You'll be better off for it.

Bought the Nexus and am very happy since I purchased the extended battery from Samsung. My Galaxy Nexus last around 12 hours, just about 1 day with normal to heavy useage of email and net surfing.

This is EXACTLY what I am doing right now. I sold my VZW Nexus tonight, and am looking to buy a GSM Nexus sometime tomorrow or Monday in order to use ATT or (less likely) TMO. I had a few radio issues like you mention, but they weren't enough to bother me too much. The simple truth is I'm freaking sick of VZW and their friggin' methods of doing things, mostly revolving around the way they try to turn their customers into ATMs for their own coffers. I used to use them because they had the best network/tech, but in the past year or so it has become more and more evident they are having some serious problems with their network. I could care less WHY it is happening and more THAT it is happening.
It's pushed me over the edge to wave goodbye and leave the "service" provider. At least ATT and TMO don't make a habit of treating their customers like $#it and they don't make a practice of nickle and diming them to death. It is unlikely that I will ever return to VZW, even if they regain the status of "best network" and "best hardware". If necessary I would settle for slightly less powerful hardware and slightly less network coverage/performance in order to vote with my $ and my conscience against the corporation itself. Screw Verizon.

Right on. Not to sound like a broken record, but you look like another candidate for the Prepaid Thread. Take a look in there before you sign up for service. Take control and own your service.

How do you have 2-3 bars of 3g/4g? I didn't think it showed data connectivity only phone service and wifi strength?
Am I missing something?

I'm in the exact same boat as the OP. Got my VZW Galaxy Nexus four days ago. Switched from TMO after 11 years specifically for this phone since they didn't announce availability on TMO at MWC. Had a Nexus One off contract, and was waiting very patiently for the Galaxy Nexus, but with VZW's double-data promotion, and a nice 20% corporate discount, I decided to make the switch.
Despite VZW's JD Power awards for network quality, I'm getting horrible reception on this phone compared to what I would get with TMO. 3G data speeds are a 10-20% of what I'd get through TMO as well, and the Nexus One wasn't even a '4G' phone! LTE can be decent... get about 5-8mbps where I live, but I work in downtown Phoenix and get about 1-2mbps, on LTE! That's insane. I'd pull 2-4mbps on my Nexus One anywhere around the Phoenix Metro area. The day after I activated the phone the connection dropped completely, at random, for more than 30 minutes each time. Thankfully I've yet to see that again. I'll be watching real close for the next week to decide whether to keep it or not... Kind of sad I missed out on Daily Steals $530 deal for the GSM version.
Edit: Forgot to add that, aside from the network issues, the phone itself is absolutely amazing...

all of them nickle and dime tmo chargers 5 bucks for exchanging defect phones i had verizon for 2 years and glad when contract was up their customer service was horrid and lte kept crashing verizon sucks worst of all in my opinion

Had my N since launch day in Dec by VZN. Had many dropped calls, poor 3G speeds, random reboots, battery pull req'd, sluggish behaviour & poor photo quality. Terribly aggravated with VZN handling of the launch & subsequent o/s updates....lack thereof.
Last week rooted & applied 4.0.4 with radio updates. & am so far happier. Here in Maine we don't have LTE & probably won't this year.
Regardless, would not even consider switch back to lying cheating good for little ATT. Remember, none of the carriers give a damn about us except for our paying our bills on time & betting good little sheep.

I'm not discounting anyone's experience but I left tmo after 6+ years to VZW just for the nexus. I guess people expect some miracle coverage but its just as spotty as T-Mobile network. My only complaint really with VZW is there pricing however I totally knew what I was getting into before buying the nexus. T-Mobile hardly treats there customers like royalty anymore their customer service went from top notch to WTF and was my main reason for leaving. VZW customer service is how I remember T-Mobile back in the day. I thought I would regret leaving but I must say the gnex was worth it. The few gripes I had with the phone disappeared once I updated to 4.0.4. I definitely don't suggest
Staying with services your not happy with VZW LTE isn't for everyone.

I live in Chicago and coming from a bionic I totally know what you mean. I had great 4g coverage on my bionic and I'm super disappointed to see this phone have such terrible coverage. But when I went to north river side mall which is right outside the city I had full bars of 4G.

Return it and get the rezound. The radio is incredible.. and ics is just as good on it as the gnex.
On my gnex I coulndt get signal at my house. With the rezound it get 3 to 4 bars.
Compared to the gnex.. it feels much higher quality. It's fast , sexy screen, and ice goodness.. best choice I ever made

I dunno man, I live in a suburb of Atlanta, and with T-Mobile I was getting anywhere from 400 kbps to 1.2 mbps tops, dropping calls, phone wouldn't even ring sometimes and I wouldn't get the voicemail indication until 8 hours after the fact.
Now I'm getting about 25-30 Mbps over LTE with no voice issues whatsoever.

No it doesn't for me, been with sprint 10 yrs and they always seem to 1 up everyone at some point. Plus they been good to us.

This is most likely going to get me to switch. Buy an unlocked Nexus from play store and setup on tmobile BYOD plan and buh bye Sprint.

No nexus devices. After watching ET4G ICS screw ups, I am only buying Nexus devices.

That's my only reason I haven't switched yet. Anytime I need a payment extension they give it to me. If I have trouble with something they work with me. That means a lot to me. Now the minute they start being asses. I'll be switching for sure.

Sprints customer service is awesome compared to other companies and that's one reason why I would stay with them

So this states no hotspot offical or unoffical... is this the same with sprint and the hacked hotspots void this? or will this be impossible with T-Mobile?

Ill be sticking with sprint. T-mo only has 2G speeds where I live as compared to sprints 3G. I'm also assuming I'll eventually have sprint LTE with network vision and all.

They won't now if tmobile keeps this plan... it's good for everyone.

This video says you won't be able to use the phone as a hotspot at all. I wonder if they'll kick you off for hacking hotspot or if it will even be possible to hack it? I love how they compare minutes but don't mention that Sprint offers "any mobile any time" which makes a world of difference. About 3,500 any mobile any time minutes a month for me.

Hacked hotspot depends on the phone, not the carrier.
Not everyone uses that many minutes. I stay under 100 usually.
T mobile is going to acquire a lot of customers due to this. Its a great move and may actually spark some competition and bring unlimited back.

To be honest i don't think att or verizon give a damn about what anyone else does, I just hope the 2 weak sister companies can hang in there.

I get awesome 3g and 4g here at home and at school but tmo seems only 2g
But at school they have 42mbps
If they had that at home id be hell yea

ATT and Verizon will give a damn when they start losing customers to t-mobile. T-mobile actually has a good network unlike sprint.

Tmobile actually has a pretty mixed up network. Outside of major metropolitan areas all they have is 2g or roaming (or lack of it) while sprint usually has native 3g (at least) or roaming on verizon. Service also degrades rapidly when you go inside buildings compared to Sprint and VZ not to mention the fact that T-mobile has quite the lack of spectrum to deploy both LTE and HSPA42+ on its current spectrum holdings.
Literally it's a mixed bag depending on where you live and what you do most like traveling or sitting in one spot. Just remember this. Sprints Network Vision upgrade is upgrading each and every tower to fiber or microwave backend. Their speeds are guaranteed to increase. Meanwhile T-mobile lacks spectrum in a lot of places and is currently in the process of refarming to 1900mhz 3g/4g (at last!) while lte is quite a bit away.
TBH i'd only switch if youre in an area with beyond horrible service and NV upgrades coming in a year or so...Other than that... ya it's great that t-mobile is getting unlimited again although in the long run sprint will be ahead of them.
Speaking of which... i'm starting to miss my good old sidekick lx and tmobile g1...
