[Q] htc one m8 does not recognize contacts name. - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I need your help guys in two things
1) I bought htc one m8 from Saudi Arabia ( middle east ) I need the original RUU or firmware which works on this device.
2) after I installed a new firmware on my htc m8 ( I think it is European one ), my phone couldn't recognize my contacts name, when some of my contacts call, his name is not appearing, but the numer only, I have to modify the number by adding the area code, then it works, I can't edit all of my 1900 contacts, I think I had this problem because I am using improper firmware which changed the region of my network.
please help me to find this firmware & and to solve the contacts names issue.
thank you...

To find the corresponding firmware for you device we need a little bit more information.
Can you run the following command in bootloader an paste the results here:
fastboot getvar all
ATTENTION: delete your IMEI and serial number!

I dont think your problem is caused by the European firmware, I have the same issue in one of my HTC one m8 after updating it to 2.22.401.5, the same issue that you have occurs, but I have to REMOVE the area code for the phone to recognize numbers, plus it only happens to some of the contacts not all of them. whats even weirder is that my other phone (Same model, same carrier) does not have this problem!
I tried clearing People app data, didnt work.
I hope someone might have a solution.

Your device needs stock WWE ROM backup and firmware. Meaning x.xx.401.x. You can find those in @Mr Hofs thread: here
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using XDA Free mobile app

I will try deleting Google from the phone then re-sync it. I only cleared People data before.
all my contacts are stored in google and I did have some duplicates but that wasnt the issue, some numbers are not duplicated but still the issue occurs.
Maybe deleting Google account then re-syncing would do the trick, also this issue only happened once I updated to the latest firmware (via OTA) the phone is not rooted.
my other rooted m8 doesnt face the same issue after updating to the same firmware (also OTA, by first reflashing stock recovery, then updating then rooting it again).
will test it soon, thanks.

To flash a stock or custom recovery your bootloader needs to be unlocked. If you wish to flash a complete firmware.zip you need to be S-Off.

okay
seems i need to change both, S-ON and relock
so i have to S-off and unlock my device, which one has to be done first ??

I would pay 25$ and use SunShine, as it does both.

I saw your thread on the m7 Q&A, and yes (if this is the actual problem (i didnt read your thread completely)) it does apply to both m7, m8 and any other HTC Sense based phones (at least for me).
you need to edit /system/build.prop to include "ro.phone.min_match=7"

crap, sorry, can't help with that, the other guys are gonna have to help you out.
i just saw your callerID problem, and posted as quickly as i could, before you waste time flashing things not needed. (just for info, various m7 OTAs had the setting correct for GCC version "ro.phone.min_match.HTC__J15=7" and some didnt)
once you have your phone back up and running, irrelevant of what ROM you are using, if you need 7 digit callerID (like me), you'll end up having to modify build.prop
good luck, sorry about not "being on time"

i checked that post
i found these 3 recoveries:
STOCK RECOVERY 1.54.401.5
STOCK RECOVERY 1.54.401.10
STOCK RECOVERY DUAL SIM 1.45.401.12
which one is most suitable with my device ? and is there any difference ?
i tried to flash 1.54.401.5 stock recovery on my htc, but when i get into Hboot and select RECOVERY, i don't think it is working, i see black phone with red thunder sign as a cauition, does that mean i am on recovery mode and can flash a stock rom ?
thanks in advance, and i know you have the ideal answer as you saved me before.:good::good::laugh::laugh::laugh:

You have to restore the stock Backup using e.g. TWRP recovery. It cannot be restored, using stock recovery. After this you can flash stock recovery 1.54.401.5 again. So I guess you have to re-flash TWRP, put the unzipped backup into the TWRP/Backup/Hxxxxx/ folder on your One M8 and run the restore option in TWRP.
After this flash stock recovery, as mentioned.
If you are in stock recovery and enter it using bootloader, you get a red exclamation mark. This is the entrance screen of stock recovery, where you could hold Volume up and press power to enter it.
Any questions, just ask.

[Q] Change CID from 1111111 back to HTC_044

Hey team
I think I may have the opposite issue to most people here, I have just received my phone back from getting repaired (By the Parallel Import company here in New Zealand) and it has been returned to me with S-Off and CID: 1111111.
I would prefer to have a stock phone in order to get OTA updates (I know, the opposite of what most uses of XDA want and am happy to trade phone for a stock hand set)
I was given this TUT to restore my hand set back to HTC_044 (or maybe even VODAP022 the New Zealand Vodafone CID) but am receiving the error "waiting on device", I have tried unplugging and replugging it back in a number of times and have booted in fast boot to check it does change to "fast-boot usb" but am still getting "waiting for device".
I was wondering if anyone could tell me is the below method correct or is there a better way to get my phone back to a stock "off the shelf" device?
Thanks in Advance (easy on the Troll rage if possible)
Cheers
Firstly, you need to install ADB tools,
DOWNLOAD FOR OTHER PLATFORMS -> SDK Tools Only -> Windows
Download the one of package and install ADB SDK Tools.
If you don’t have JAVA SE Development Kit, you also need to install it in order to install ADB Tools. Please note that, you have to install JAVA SE Development Kit not just JAVA SE with 32bit (x86).
You will have instruction while you install ADB Tools any way.
Once you install ADB tools, open my computer -> c:\ -> Program Files(x86) -> Android
Right click on SDK manager and run SDK Manager.exe with Administration access.
Click Android SDK Platform-tools and press Install packages.
If the install is finished, you can see the new folder called platform-tools on Android folder.
Press SHIFT Key + right click on Platform-tools folder and click something say “Command”. Hot key is (W)
If you done correctly, commend window will open.
Please connect the phone with debugging mode (From the phone, go to setting -> Development -> select USB Debugging).
Now, type the following commend on the commend window.
fastboot oem writecid HTC_044
If you have done correctly, your super CID is now HTC_044,
044 is the Asian CID so you can update the phone with the latest of Asian firmware.
You can also choose HTC_001 or any other number. These numbers are represent all regions.

Worked like a charm!!
Just run Check CID from the market and it has come up with HTC_044
Have also just run the "check for updates" but still not getting 4.0.4 or Jelly bean but that may be a separate issue. Now that I am back to Stock.
<--- "thank" Clicked!
Cheers, your a phone saver!!
I know my original issue is now resolved but I was informed once the CID was returned to normal the phone would be "stock" again but I am still not receiving OTA updates.
Is there more to resetting the phone to stock?
As in do I need to get the phone turned to "S-Off" or do I need to flash an RUU (I believe however the phone has not been "rooted")
Phone info as it stands now:
CID: HTC__044
Software number: 1.28.708.10
Android: 4.0.3
Baseband 1.1204.103.14
Would giving you any of the following help?
Kernel version,Build Number
P.S. Please tell me my only mistake before was'nt just that I was using "HTC_044" and you have two under scores "HTC__044"
Thanks for your help again
What I can see here is your software version no. is not for HTC__044.
HTC__044's software version no. is *.**.707.*
I like to suggest that you flash the 2.17.707.3 RUU (since you changed your CID to HTC__044) and you should receive JB OTA update.
There is no JB OTA yet for x.xx.708.x

Your right, my software before I sent the phone to the Tech team was "2.17.707.3"
What region is 708?
Will flashing a 707 RUU return me to a stock handset or will I need to flash a new update manually each time?
Does that also mean my phone has been rooted? would not have thought an authorised HTC repair agent would have done that (that is if I believe that the phone was sent to an authorised agent, cant be sure with a Parallel importer)

No, your phone is not rooted. It just that you have a very lucky phone with s-off and cid:111111. 708 is Asia_HK
With your CID:111111, you can flash any RUU that you want, something that S-On device cannot do
Once you flash 707 RUU, you will receive update for 707, no need to manually flash each time. The system will accept your device as 707
I am telling you, man. In a few weeks time you'll change your mind about having an S-OFF phone. Don't trade it! I also have an S-OFF HTC One X and I didn't care much for that thing but after a few weeks of reading, I came to realize how lucky I am to have this phone. The things you can do with S-OFF!

I have had a search tho and every thing I have found including the http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/HTC_One_X seems to say that I need to be "unlocked" to flash a RUU. Can you point me in the right direction of flashing without unlocking?

You read it wrong mate
To flash a RUU, you need a "locked" or "relocked" bootloader.
I believe your device is not rooted so your bootloader is "locked"
What you need to do is, reboot to fastboot (press power +volume down for a few second, you'll be in hboot, press power once, you'll be in fastboot mode).
Connect your device to PC then double click the RUU, follow the the updater instruction, you are good to go
I would like to remind you guys as i have mentioned a billion times before (and no one believed me) that OTA updates and sent by IMEI ONLY ONLY ONLY.
No matter what your phone's CID/software number/colour/origin, if HTC didn't include your IMEI on the OTA update list you will never ever receive it. In case you really need the update, you can contact HTC with your IMEI. (they will most likely ask you to send it back to a service centre)
whether the OTA update will work on not, THAT depends on your CID.

If that is correct my IMIE number should already be in there as my phone was originally HTC__044 and 707. As per my opening post I'm just trying to get it back to that.
Or are you saying that makeing those three details match still won't do the trick?

If I can change my CID like its written in the first post, I can do the JB Firmware update from here?
I am waiting since JB is out, checking this every day, hoping that my CID will appear and it just works like that?

pls guide me about the problem that this phone is having secondly pls tell me the correct Stock RUU for reverting back to the stock rom which i hope would solve the problem.

1- You can't downgrade unless you have S-OFF.
2- All digit must match, so you have to research for the suitable RUU.
3- RUU is enough, if you can find one you can ask for a Nandroid backup.

[q] Confused about returning to stock

Hello everyone,
Couple of weeks ago I had a problem with soft-bricking my phone (thanks to the help on here I managed to fix it) But I now want to return my phone to stock. (I want to unlock the sim so I can use any sim card, and it seems the only way to do that is by having the phone in stock condition).
I have tried several RRU's but they always come up with an unknown error (155 I think) I have also managed to relock my bootloader (but that doesn't seem to help. Here are my phones details:

So where do I start? I've lost the original backups of the phone and although I made a backup of the original rom I'm not sure I backed-up the right thing! (last time I tried to use it, it bricked the phone)
I've tried this RRU RUU_M7_UL_JB43_SENSE50_MR_TMOUS_3.24.531.3_Radio_4A.21.3263.03_10.38m.1157.04_release_336982_signed_2(2)
Thank you for your help. I really want to use this phone but I can't seem to get past this sim lock!
Ruu M7....dude thats a HTC ONE ruu. Go to the general section and look for the nandroid backup collection thread. Get the one matching your main number and READ the OP carefully and completely. It's all written there what to do
There is no ruu available for you !
Here is a new nand for you

I will. As soon as this is done
However, I seem to have lost CWM (no longer accessible in fastboot when I go to recovery)
When you restore a nandroid backup you flash the recovery.img and the boot.img from the nand folder. That way you always restore the nand with the correct recovery
I relocked my bootloader..... So I need to unlock it again! (going to do that now)
Right. 100% back to stock (except for bootloader)
Still not taking the sim unlock code. -____- Should I try to get a new code perhaps? Or contact t-mobile and get it directly from them?
No harm in trying

Sorry for kicking this up again.....
Managed to get the unlock directly from the provider and it still refuses to unlock.....
You mention stock recovery - what is that??? - maybe this is the answer to my problem?
Thank you in advance.
If you restored a nandroid backup you have a custom recovery like cmw. If u used ruu then u have stock recovery.

Totally stumped.
I have absolutely no idea on what I am doing wrong with sim unlocking (never had a problem before ever)
I've returned the phone to stock (as far as I am aware) got the sim code directly from t-mobile/ee and yet the phone still wont unlock the sim.
Is there anything anyone can think of that I have missed (in terms of getting this phone back to 100% stock?) Could it be related to fastboot/cwm should I remove them and relock the phone as well? Will that help?
If you have stock rom, kernel and recovery it should unlock fine. But i have seen many of these reports lately that the phone just don't accept the code.
Maybe going to the carrier shop can help you ?

I'm probably going to end up sending it to t-mobile. However, if they wanted to check they will see that I have fastboot on the phone.... Isn't that a dead give away that the phone has been rooted?
They will always know it's been messed with because the bootloader says relocked (or still unlocked)
But unlocking does not necessarily means no warranty or service.

Right.... thanks for all your help.
I guess I will bite the bullet, send it to t-mobile/ee and see what happens.

Okay. The instructions are in the link. Where are you getting stuck?
Telling someone that has no idea what they're doing to convert the phone isn't very good advice.
OP - do you understand anything about rooting and the commands used to root your phone?

yes i do.. i tried a few things but got stuck in between cos i dont know this stuff in depth..
I tried to unroot by downloading the stock firmware for my phone..
the method i was following was to match my cid number etc which i got through getvar with the firmwares on xda.. that bit i did well but the method i was following said that now i had to copy and paste this firmware in my phone in the backups folder of clockwordmod.. now i couldnt find that folder.. even though the backup i made is occupying space on my phone but i cannot locate it when i try to copy paste the downloaded firmware..
can you tell me where i can find that or tell an alternate way to do this thing?
OK, can you connect your phone when in the bootloader and then use the command fastboot getvar all to get information about your phone and post it up here (making sure you hide the IMEI and serial number, of course)

is this what you were asking for?
Indeed! OK, if you want go back to 100% stock, running on Sense as if you just got it out the box you can do the following:
First, download these files to the same location as fastboot:
4.16.401.10 RUU ZIP - https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B17smFr95pleU2NqcVB3NWxoNnM/view (rename it ruu.zip - not ruu.zip.zip!)
htc_fastboot - https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95897840722646249 (doesn't need renaming)
1. Relock your bootloader - fastboot oem lock
2. Once done, reboot the bootloader to confirm it says 'RELOCKED' - fastboot reboot-bootloader
3. Once relocked, reboot the phone into RUU mode - fastboot oem rebootRUU
4. Once in RUU mode, flash the RUU ZIP using the HTC fastboot app - htc_fastboot flash zip ruu.zip
5. It will go through a few passes but once complete reboot the phone to the bootloader - fastboot reboot-bootloader
6. Once back at the bootloader, go into recovery and you should get the stock recovery not CWM. Hold volume up and press power to get the recovery menu and do a factory reset
7. Once the reset has finished, reboot the phone
You should now be working again on 100% stock Lollipop
help needed, new to rooting stuff
Hi forum members. This is my first post and and i am an infant in unlocking and rooting stuff. The reason I am researching these things is because of my HTC one m8. I got this phone used from a seller 6 months ago. I was expecting OTA updates but did not receive any till date. I am still running on 4.4.2 . So, after a bit of searching on forums, I learned about a thing called boot loader. And checked mine. To my surprise it was TAMPERED , UNLOCKED AND S-ON. Now I really don't know what that means. Some suggested to check if it's rooted, installed root checker and it said "device is not rooted" .
Can anyone pLease help me And explain me what all this means as it will be greatly appreciated.I only want to have OTA updates And need stock android. Thanks in advance
Best to start your own thread, and post up the same details as the OP in post #8, rather than confusing things in someone else's thread

That was the second request, the first being to get it back to stock. I was just saying that if they're not familiar with rooting HTC devices then converting to GPe could potentially brick the device

I'm an Arsenal fan but thank you anyway!
hey again
i unrooted my device and it seemed fine then but since day one the device is highly unstable.. I did the hard reset several times but have not been able to fix the problem.. suddenly all the data vanishes from the device and some features get locked ( brightness, power saver and others too). Please suggest what i should do?
Is there a way I can re-flash the stock lollipop with a different RUU file?
Nope, if you still have issues when stock you have a faulty phone
these are definitely sofware issues.. for example one in ten times when i format my device it starts working totally fine... but after a few days the same problem re-appears... the problem is that htc zoe add keeps popping up again and again.. and when it starts i cant adjust the brightness or the power saver options.. the rest of the phone works fine....
can you please suggest if i should convert my phone to GPE? or will it be too difficult a process for a rookie like me?
Sounds like a faulty phone, get it replaced

Htc m9 cant get the right RUU

when i turn on my htc m9 it goes to bootloader and i have access to download mode and recovery mode (rooted TWRP) and i tried with so many RUU but always i get error 131 (RUU not matched with your CID )
my phone is UNLOCKED and S-ON i cant get it to S-OFF and change the cid :/

any solution ? or RUU for my MID and CID ?
Have you identified your MID & CID? This will be key in finding the correct RUU. The best resource is the SKU/CID/MID list by Sneakyghost & Behold_this (url below). Yes, we could look it up for you, but it's best to learn firsthand and will take just a minute or two.
Once you know your carrier and model, we can start searching for the matching. From your information, it looks like you're currently on Lollipop firmware, so we're talking about moving you to Marshmallow if it's available. This will get you the latest firmware and enable you to run the latest custom ROMs, if you should choose to do so.

SKU-, CID- and MID-List by Sneakyghost and Behold_this
- a spreadsheet for using your CID & MID to identify your phone
HTC Sync Manager
- installs the necessary drivers & ADB tools for the HTC M9
Instructions for obtaining your CID, MID & software version on Windows:
a. Install HTC Sync Manager (this will install the necessary drivers & ADB tools)
b. Boot your phone into download mode (from a powered off state, turn on by holding the POWER+DOWNVOL)
c. Connect your phone to your PC
d. Open a command prompt window
e. Navigate to the ADB tools folder, typically C:\Program Files (x86)\HTC\HTC Sync Manager\HTC Sync
- assuming the path is correct, you can cut & paste this command into your terminal: cd C:\Program Files (x86)\HTC\HTC Sync Manager\HTC Sync
f. Execute the following command in a terminal (command prompt): fastboot getvar all
g. Copy the lines that mention product, version-main, mid, and cid.
@computerslayer: It's actually easier to look at the line with "OS" at the beginning which can be found in download mode (it states the same information as version-main from getvar all) and to search for a RUU that corresponds to that firmware version. There is no need for finding out the device's CID or MID.
Edit: Besides of that all the needed information can already be found in the OP.
@djope47: Visit HTC's US website. They provide RUUs for US carriers. The search function of your browser and your version-main will probably lead you to the correct RUU. Newer versions with the same SKU (the numbers behind the second dot in the firmware version and before the third dot) should be fine, too.
Edit2: Or you look at the RUU collections which are linked in my thread (located in the general section).

So you tried the M9 x.xxx.651.xx RUU from HTCs website while your phone was relocked and booted to download mode? Your phone definitely has the correct Sprint CID therefore it's not normal that you face that error. How did you try to flash the *.zip from stifilz's collection (or did you extract the *.zip from the *.exe by yourself - if so: what have been your exact steps?)? Did you use fastboot or have you tried the SD card method described in my google sheet?
I personally don't like the *.exe files or the fastboot method (which actually work the same way). They fail so many times due to little mistakes a user can make. The SD card method on the other hand doesn't rely on working USB cables, drivers, the correct USB port, and a relocked bootloader (so you can use it with an unlocked bootloader, too) or in some cases the correct windows version (some people have problems with win 10 whereas the same setup with win 7 doesn't produce a single error for them).
ive tried the sd card method (go to download mode then press volume up button ) and i got the failed msg ,i tried it with different x.xxx.651.xx RUUs all gives the same result
Is it possible to install ruu from the US developer version to HTC One m9 bought from other country ? (Dubai version )

I didn't watch the video, but I can tell you that he is using an HTC One M7 and that I wouldn't follow instructions for anything other than your phone model (HTC One M9).
i noticed that all RUU.zip files that i downloaded are corrupted i cant extract them ,and the size of zip file is more than 2GB but the total size of the files inside it is like 70MB is this normal ? ive downloaded several RUUs and they are all with the same problem
They're encrypted and not meant to be unzipped. Therefore many programs can't handle those archives. If you use 7-zip and the #-method then you're able to unzip a RUU. However there is absolutely no reason why you should do that since they get flashed as a zip.

so what should i do ive tried what u said and didnt work out ! should i try this method https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWmnHwkDrKk ?? and in those RUUs they have the same CIDnum with my phone but the MIDnum mine is 0PJA10000 and the sprint RUUs have 0PJA20000
any solution ?
Oh yeah, I totally missed that. The MID with the 2 is the correct one for sprint. Did you buy your phone second hand? It looks like someone set is S-OFF, changed the MID and set it S-ON, again. Maybe that person flashed a RUU that's not compatible with that phone, too. You should try to find out the Serialnumber of the phone and contact HTC for finding out whether it really is a sprint phone or whether someone borked an international M9 (your current MID is the international one). GSM firmware and CDMA hardware are not compatible and vice versa. In the worst case it's unrecoverable.
If we know it's original firmware we might be able to fix the phone with a RUU. However I can't guarantee anything.
Btw, instructions how to flash RUU.zip files can be found in my google sheet, too.

I guess you're talking about the "100%" guide here in the general forum. The problem is that it only applies to the international version of the M9. Since many users don't know that there is a dedicated forum for every US branded version of the M9 mistakes like yours may occur.
If possible flash a custom rom that is compatible with your current firmware and based on sense (like an old viper version for example). Then get the sunshine app and try to re-S-OFF your phone. If you're lucky and the previous owner used sunshine, too, you won't have to pay. If not you need to invest 25 bucks to recover your phone. After you got S-OFF you change the MID back to its original state. Afterwards you should be able to use the RUU.zip as described in my sheet.
