[Q] Touchscreen behaves erratically when charging - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey All
Today I picked up an HTC One M8.
Have set it up and only had it up and running for a few hours.
I plugged it in to charge using the charger that came with it and noticed that the screen would become erratic. Phantom touches would register making it very hard to use. Have tried it in different sockets but the issue remains.
I have tried a spare charger that I have in the house and the issue is not present.I know the HTC charger is a little different in that it supports some kind of quick charger, so its not really a like for like swap I guess.
Is there a chance that the included charger is faulty? Or could the phone be at fault?
I really don't want to have to return it but will it it looks like its the phone that has an issue.

Well, at this point its hard to guess from here. Can you upload some snaps/videos ? It would be helpful for anyone who visits the thread. It doesn't take much time either. :good:

Is it a brand new phone? if not I think the digitizer is going bad.

Yeah it's brand new. Phone is fine off charge and when using other charges. It's just the stock charger tat seems to cause issues.

Do you have a case on your phone? I have a UAG case and the charger sometimes doesn't fully click leading to that behaviour. Without the case there is no problem using the phone while charging.

Maybe the stock charger is faulty. Probably the wires has lost continuity.

I have the same issue with a unofficial charger (2.0A).
No issue with original charger (1.5A)

I also have a HTC One M8 with the same problem!
I have to disconnect the USB cable so that I can use the phone correctly without 'phantom touches' activating things I didn't want.
A classic example is pressing the back button will more often than not take me to google now. It's not supposed to do that. It only ever does this when charging.
Also when using any app the phantom touches will activate things I didn't want it to. Some apps will indicate which button you clicked and this is the perfect way to see this problem in action, because buttons will be clicking that you didn't even touch.
It's almost like the touch screen becomes ridiculously sensitive and even just a touch of breeze from a fan can activate a phantom touch.
My phone has done this since brand new. I've had the phone for around 3 months now. There was a software update since I had the phone and it didn't fix the problem.
It does this for me with the stock USB cable, samsung USB cable, generic USB cable, charging from AC/PC/Car it doesn't matter.
It even has the problem when the battery is at 100% with the cable connected.
The only way to accurately use the phone is to unplug the cable!

Erratic Touch on Verizon HTC One M8
This has been driving me mad.
Got Verizon Variant Red HTC One M8 near the beginning of August.
I bought a spigen clear case, a longer usb cable, and a 2AMP charger to use at work. I was chewing through the battery while playing Clash of Clans on it at work.
I pretty much always turn on visual feedback for touch on my smartphone now and noticed sometimes while playing Clash I would see multiple touches go in a horizontal line across my screen (if you do not know you play clash of clans in a horizontal position so technically the lines would run vertically down the phone)
I also have a tempered glass screen on my phone so I figured it was some kind of freak nuance with the case pushing the glass or something.
Bought a UAG Case for my phone, few days later I notice the same behavior, bought cases have a small "lip" to protect the screen if you drop the phone face down, I again figured this must be the culprit and bought a new case.
Barely there Clear case by casemate, I have had the case for 3 days and today is my first day at work since, immediately upon connecting my charger I noticed the erratic touch behavior.
At this point I realized it was never the case, it has to be something with charging in general or the specific charger I am using.
Anyone got any clue what is actually causing this issue?

I have faced the issue as well. In my case, if I charge the phone using the dot view case then the touchscreen behaves wrongly. However, if I charge the phone with no case at all it works fine.
Anyway after I flashed the latest firmware (.401.6) the problem is gone. What firmware do you have?

Using htc one m8 developer edition 4.4.2. This issue comes with every charger. With or without case or screen protection.

If it's brand new, take it back for a replacement. The sooner the better because the longer you wait, the more they may think it is user caused.

I just got my phone replaced due to bad mic. I had a brand new one on release day and now I got a refurb both suffered the same issues. It's not always that it does it but it certainly pisses you off. Same symptoms as the op describes, I have yet to find a permanent solution.

This is so super irritating. I feel you. I just found out though that it occurs when I have my case on.. So whenever i use the phone when I'm charging I have to pull the case off. It really doesn't make any sense lol but this is my workaround for this bug.

It seems to occur when the phone is close to full charge. Every app goes crazy. When I unplug the charger it returns to normal.

I have the same issue with mine; I found a website which said to do the following:
Using two fingers swipe down on the status bar then touch the gear icon > Display & Gestures > G-Sensor calibration
Place your phone on a flat surface then touch Calibrate.
After the calibration process has finished tap Ok.
You should also calibrate the finger touch on your screen to deal with the keyboard issue.
Open “Settings” and go to “Language and Keyboard”
Tap “HTC Sense Input”
Tap “Advanced”
Tap “Calibration tool” (Calibrate your screen for a better touch experience)
Now you are asked to type the given sentence
One done, Calibration Complete message appears
Hit “Reset Calibration” to reset screen to factory default

It's still present, but it hasn't been as bad - I turned on the visual feedback in the developers settings, and you can watch the cursor fly all about the screen like it's possessed!

Same issue here, on the latest software. This is my second m8 with the same issues.

[Q] Extremely weird screen behaviour.

Hello all! Ive just recently got my Xperia arc, and flashed a nightly build of CM7 on it, number 20. Everything seemed to run smoothly, but just now screen started to behave very weird, it almost seem to have osme kind of "ghostly" second touch.
The upper part of the screen is almost impossible to use, when I try select an app to move it on the screen, by holding finger down, it just flickers for a second and gets deselected. If I manage to select it and drag+hold, it starts spazing out all over the screen, with screens switching between eachother by it self.
The problem is especially noticeable in games, where you usually have a joystick controller in bottom left corner. When using it, I usually trigger the buttons above it in the upper left corner which I am no where near at with my finger.
Is this a ROM issue, or hardware issue? Ive been using the rom for couple of days with no strange to it, and now this happens. Any ideas what the source can be?

Sorry for bump, but apparently the problem remained. I changed to XDA rom, which too is based on CM7 thou and after a day I stumbled upon same problem of ghotsly second touch on screen.
I cant hold to move apps, cant precisely press a button in game on left side of screen, it then triggers some other button nearby. I do get haptic feedback from long press on a homescreen, but the "add new" menu popups only every few tries Any ideas of what may be causing this? I would really like to avoid the hassle of resetting the phone and sending it back for repairs :/
try stock one or miui.
It sounds a bit like your screen had a bad encounter with water...

No, this phone is only few days old.
I think I am noticing a pattern.. screen behaves this way only late evenings, till next morning. I never noticed the issue during the day, but then it was there again for no reason after I left phone for couple of hours (it's past midnight here at the moment). Now when I think back, same was previous two evening, issue only noticeable during late evenings. Could my phone be possessed lol?
It's quite weird issue too. Upper half of the screen seems to have a ghost touch as I said. When trying to add a widget to upper screen, I only get a haptic feedback from long press. When playing games, all buttons on left side (landscape mode) get activated as soon I press one of them. Most weird of all, is that screens works perfectly in app drawer and settings, but not in app/homescreen. I will test how it is again tomorrow and report. If it works just fine again as if nothing happened I will be really puzzled.
Currently on CM7 Xda version, same was for official version. I am considering updating to MIUI, just gotta figure this radio difference stuff, but am becoming sceptic to whether this issue really lies with ROM and not app/settings.

I've figured the cause, it only happens when the phone is plugged in and charging. Beats me why thou, what remains to see now is if it is tied to the kernel or not. Posting it here in case others with similar problem stumble upon the thread.
Are you using the stock charger, i used to face bit similar problem when i used to connect my old HTC USB charger... later i discover the HTC charger was giving only 500mA , where as sony one is rated at 700mA.

Thanks for the tip! Turns out it didn't like my 1000mA charger I am using for all my usb stuff, but the stock on works perfect (it's 850mA).

[Q] Xperia S: Phone unresponsive when connected to Charger/HDMI/Headphones

Hey guys,
I have some weird issues with my XS and I don't know whether they are caused by software or hardware. Here's what bothers me:
Every time I connect something to my XS like the usb cable to charge it or transfer files, an hdmi cable or even headphones my phone gets totally unresponsive. The touch buttons respond after about the tenth press and even the screen is unresponsive as hell. If I scroll through the app drawer for example, my swipe gestures are often recognized as a press so that apps are launched although I made a fluid swipe gesture. On the other hand pressing on a screen to launch some app sometimes isn't recognized at all. If I plug out the whatever cable, everything's okay again.
So, what do you think? Is this a hardware or a software issue and what should I do now?
Some background information: I already tried a factory reset and such things. My phone software is stock ics (see signature).

Hmm i havent experienced that before. Try updating to .50 stock and see if it is still there. If it is try and roll back to gingerbread. This will tell you for sure if it is sofware or hardware.
I'll try that but if you say that you never experienced that before, hardware would be more suspicious.

Guys I have the same problem. When connected to the official charger and USB cable the problem is minimal. However with a car charger or an auc jack/headphone the touchscreen is unusable.

PS. They've identified the problem as a battery problem (something with voltage) that's why when anything was plugged into the phone, the touch screen would lag - because it didn't have enough voltage for the touch screen, and therefore, it wouldn't recognise all my touches.

The problem is I've unlocked bootloader and flashed some roms, lately very satisfied with Slimbean. However there are some issues with flashing and warranties.
I wonder if sending in my phone for repairs would be wise. So I would like your advise.
Is the cause a battery related problem? Is this ROM related?
Send in the device or live with the results of flashing?
I still dislike this issue but I can live with it now.. I noticed that my touchscreen bugs mostly in the lower parts of the display. So I installed some framwork mods that allow to use my phone upside down (rotated 180° and onscreen buttons enabled). So in the end its not a big deal for me anymore because the most touches are performed in the lower section of the screen.
I also unlocked my bootloader lately. If you want to send you phone in you can relock it but maybe they find out what you've done. But in my opinion this is a clear hardware issue which hast nothing to do with unlocking or flashing. So I think they can't say that this is your fault.. Regarding the voltage theory: interesting theory but I don't think this is true.. As I said: my touchscreen works perfectly in the upper part while charging but not in the lower..
I had issues like this when I used a different charger.
Yeah thats right.. I found out that the original Sony charger delivers 1500 mA.. If my phone is connected to this charger, the effect is at least noticable.. But when I connect my phone to my 800 mA car charger, the phone feels absolutely unusable..
wut... I got tired of using a screen protector, so I took it off. Immediately I noticed the screen became unresponsive at times, and discovered it was the bottom part that was unresponsive (as @mister-g1 wrote). But it only happened when the charger or aux was connected . And then I re-applied the screen protector and the problem was completely gone! I can reproduce this in real time with the app "touch test" and record it if anyone is interested.
So it looks like I need to buy some new screen protectors..
Also, did anyone send their phone in for repair and got it fixed?
When the screen protector is altered, you must change it. Regarding that other problem, well...always use original chargers, headphones...etc. If along the way you did otherwise, well, that's the source of your problem. My advise is that from now on you must use only original chargers/headphones/etc and your phone will adapt back, it may take a while but it will do it.
TIP : Try plugging in the headphones while the screen is off. See what happens when you turn it on.

I should be able to use it without screen protector.. Anyway I bought 6x screen protectors, so I have enough for a while The problem occurs with original charger and headphones, and when I plug it in when the screen is off. And even though I have used my N7 charger, that should not be a problem.

Same here.. I always used the original charger and the problem was always present.. And using another charger shouldn't be a big deal.. Thats definately a hardware issue.. Think of the yellow tint screens and so on.. Sony does not always deliver the best screens.. The Xperia SP has similar problems like shown in this video:

Charging Issue

Hi guys,
i have some issues with charging my inc2.
it is not accepting any charge anymore, tried diffrent chargers, cables, even on my pc but nothing. The orange charging LED just flashes slowly on and off...
Any ideas?
Need to replace phone or replace charging port.

Yes, unfortunately it is a known hardware issue. Over time, the charging port starts coming loose. Like mentioned above, you CAN fix it yourself. There are video tutorials on YouTube and the replacement part can be had for under $10. If your device is still under warranty, Verizon will replace the phone. If it's not under warranty (or if you just want to give it a go), the port replacement process is pretty straightforward.
I might give it a try. Does anybody have a video or a link?
The weird thing is, that the battery is discharging very fast, could it be just a bad battery?

Could b the back door on your inc 2. I believe you need the back door on to charge cuz it goes thru contacts on the back. I dropped mine one day and charging and getting signal was almost impossible till I figured that out and bought a new one

Seems to charge now. Won't touch it until it is full. After that I will check what is going on.

The issue stems from regular use. The charging port is essentially held in place only by the connections to the board. Repeatedly plugging and unplugging the power cable causes it to break over time.

Def need to replace it. Same issues I was having at one point with it randomly taking charge. I found that if the charger is plugged in a held a certain level ( i placed the phone on a flat surface with a book under the cord for leverage) it would charge just fine.
If you are rooted and sending back, make sure you revert to stock to avoid any annoyances.
I've managed to solve this issue without messing around with the phone's innards (the last time I did it was a disaster and I was forced to buy an entirely new phone). It's not pretty, but if you twist a rubber band around the micro usb end of your charger, plug your phone in, twist that same rubber band around the phone itself, and make sure the connection very tight, you might get some more life out of your charger port.
Ugh. I can't wait for my upgrade.

While, I give you major kudos points for MacGuyver-ing a solution, that's more of a quick band-aid than a real fix. I could imagine having a rubber band around the phone could potentially hinder usage.

Thank you. You're telling me. Do you know how hard it is to use a touch screen with a rubber band across it? Oy.
Right. The caveat here, of course, is that this technique will only help charge your phone until the charging port becomes so disconnected from the board that no amount of force will reestablish this contact. And this will inevitably happen because you're going to keep plugging and unplugging your phone from the charger which is what created the issue in the first place.
If you know you have big, sweaty, idiot hands (like me) that are going to destroy your phone if you take it apart (like me) and you can tough it out: more power to you. The other alternative is to buy an external battery charger and a second battery. The disadvantages here are pretty obvious (e.g. you have to carry a second battery around; if you forget a second battery, you can't ask another Android user to borrow their phone charger, etc.).

This will be my third case I will be returning to best buy. Two of mine (black) one of my wife's (silver). All of them having the same problem.
Randomly stops charging.
Won't charge.
Won't show indicator battery leds.
until I plug and then unplug the case then it's back to normal.
I emailed mophie on the issue since I couldn't find any similar issues on Google and asked them what I can do to prevent it or what I am possibly doing wrong.
They just send me an automated response telling me to file for a warranty claim.
So here I am asking if anybody else has the same issue I do and if they found a work around or any information. Right now it's just a really expensive phone case and the fact that I have to plug it in to activate it defeats the purpose of an external battery case.

There are two other threads in this forum about the mophie case already, both of which describe this issue (I returned mine for good because of it). There doesn't seem to be a real fix for it: there are just apparently a whole lot of bad units.
I have gone through 3 cases all with the same issue. I am headed back for case number 4 later today.
My first one had this issue. Got it replaced and the one I have now works perfectly.

Yeah it's REALLY annoying. I've gone through 3 cases myself and the problem never resolved itself. The only way I can use this case is if I never put on the top, which is stupid but I deal with it because I don't want to carry an external battery. Has anyone pulled off the top plastic power button and have it still work?

That's how I fixed the first one I had before I decided to exchange it. It works fine but it becomes annoying to push the power button on and off with it recessed like that.

I am about to return my second Mophie juice pack for the HTC One. I am having exactly the same issues; the juice pack randomly "forgets" it's charged and ceases to function, unless I plug it into a power source, at which point it "wakes up" again, but then it will stop working AGAIN before it has even used all its charge. What's ironic is that I have been a huge fan of Mophie products for the iPhone, having bought several of them for my wife's phone, and they've never had issues like this.
Mophie really needs to come clean and issue a press release explaining that the juice pack for HTC One is faulty, and they should issue return labels to EVERYONE who has bought one, as a gesture of good faith. Many other companies out there are catching up to Mophie with battery cases of their own, that are of inherently better build quality. Sorry Mophie but you stepped in it this time.

I emailed mophie on the issue since I couldn't find any similar issues on Google and asked them what I can do to prevent it or what I am possibly doing wrong.
They just send me an automated response telling me to file for a warranty claim.
So here I am asking if anybody else has the same issue I do and if they found a work around or any information. Right now it's just a really expensive phone case and the fact that I have to plug it in to activate it defeats the purpose of an external battery case.

As you can see from my previous posts my Mophie case was working fine for me............until I updated to 4.3. I am now having the same issue stated by many of you. It randomly forgets it's charged until I connect it back to power and then sometimes it just completely loses all charge and needs to be recharged. Seems it isn't a hardware issue but some sort of glitch brought upon by specific OS versions.

I realize this won't help much immediately anyway.
But the Verizon HTC One just got its' 4.3 update.
It does not include Sense 5.5, it's only Sense 5.0, but to get to my point:
One of the fixes in that OTA's changleog, was a fix for the Mophie Juice Pack.
So it would appear that HTC is aware of the issue and I would assume any OTA's that come from here on will include whatever fixes they are now implementing to reduce these issues.
Just thought I'd pass along that info for whatever it's worth.

Oh I assumed you were on a different carrier based on your signature...my bad.
As not all updates of the same Android version are the same across variants.
This is a conforting thread to see here, being that I have just ordered mine and it is coming in monday.
If MHL dosent work with the thing on, i will probably return it. I think i saw someone confirm that it wont work on Android Central Forums- I hope they are wrong.
EDIT: confirmed... The mophie case does not work with MHL.. I guess they were to cheep to add the 4 extra pins to the damn case.. I'm sure the iPhone version has all 32 pins on it

I'm using a T-Mobile HTC One that already has Android 4.3. But that's beside the point; the issue is with the Juice pack, not the phone or its software version. The juice pack "forgets" its charge when not even in use (power button turned off), therefore it has no interplay with the phone's software, so the problem is not related to phone software version.
Oh and FYI I'm now on my FOURTH HTC One Juice pack from Mophie, and it too is faulty. I did an online chat with Mophie tech support and all they did was issue yet ANOTHER return label, and did not acknowledge any awareness of this issue occurring with other HTC One Juice pack owners. So we have the corporate mentality at work, which is to say "never admit that your product is faulty."

I've had 3 bad ones that I picked up from AT&T. I stopped at Verizon and all of theirs worked perfect. The AT&T ones had extremely short connectors, the ones at Verizon had connectors the same length as the connector on the USB cable. The difference was clearly obvious.
Possible HTC One mophie solution
Hello all,
I have read all three threads on the mophie issue for the HTC One, as I was having the same issue with my new mophie; not charging or intermittently charge, top was hard to push on, and mine even seemed to have the micro usb connector misaligned. Seems as though something was not connected correctly internally on the mophie. I decided to take apart my mophie case and found that the male micro usb connector that connected to the phone had a broken plastic support bracket which cause my intermittent issue. If you are somewhat mechanically inclined and do not care about the mophie warranty, here are the steps that I took to fix my mophie:
Tools needed: Flat tip and Philips jewelers screw drivers, double sided tape, super glue (or gorilla glue), double sides tape, and some non metallic spacer (I used tape folded over a couple times)
1) Slide the flat tip in between the 2 lays of plastic and pry them apart carefully, I started by the mophie's camera hole for the HTC one and worked my way towards the other end.
NOTE: You might here some popping and cracking, this is due to the ultrasonic bonding process used.
NOTE: When prying toward the micro usb with the flat tip be aware that the battery starts just below the camera opening.
2) Once both pieces feel separated pull firmly on the plastic that has the mophie serial number, try pulling different direction, understand that some resistance will be there due to the double sides tap between the plastic and the battery.
3) Once battery is fully exposed pull battery out slightly to release double sided tap on the back side of the battery, while simultaneously pulling micro usb toward the top or camera opening of the mophie case.
4) Locate micro usb plastic support bracket, removed 2 Phillips screws to access bracket.
NOTE: At this point is when I had to repair the plastic bracket in mind with some gorilla glue. Be mindful that unless u want more work u still have to work with the usb connected to the circuit board.
5) Reinstall phillip screws and place spacer between plastic bracket and micro usb.
6) Following steps 1-4 in reverse.
My mophie works like a champ now! And the tope even fits without having to force it! Hope this help someone else out. Please see atched pics for clarification purposes.
My first mophie works perfeclty and has no flaws. Wish I had that luck with my phone LOL.
SOLUTION
Hey guys! So, I disected my case to see if I could manually fix the problem and I figured out what the problem was. The little micro USB inside the case is getting pushed inside and so when you try to plug in your phone it never fully plugs in.
So, the easiest solution would be to take a pair of pliers and very CAREFULLY shimmying the USB plug out. Then, it should work like a charm.
Also, to prevent this from happening from the future, when you insert your HTC One into the case push down the bottom part of your phone to insure that it slides onto the plug without pushing it down again.
And just another problem I experienced with this case was the built in power button. I found it was pressing in my pocket and also when I put the top part of the case down the power button would stay pressed. I simply sanded the bottom part of the built in button down and that fixed it.

[Q] Tab Pro 12.2: Screen and Button Issues

I just got this tablet (to replace the garbage SGH-I467) a few days ago (Thu., May 15th). For the first couple of days it worked like a dream. However, the last 4 nights/3 days, I have been encountering some strange issues. What I will do here is describe the issues I've been having, what I have done in attempts to fix them, list some of the things I think may have caused it, and include any additional info/questions.
Before all that though, I would like to mention that I am not a developer, but I am a bit 'tech savvy' and am more familiar with/knowledgeable of technology than the average user. Also, I have spoken with Samsung tech support and even had the support guy access my Tab Pro 12.2 remotely (I will explain what I learned from that below). So, without further ado (I apologize in advance for the long winded nature of this post, but I want detailed):
The Issues:
1) Screen "flickering"—By flickering I mean that it is shutting off and turning on rather rapidly and sporadically, though inconsistently.
I first encountered the problem 3 days ago (the 18th).
Four nights ago (the 17th), before going to bed, I plugged the device into the same outlet I have used for all my mobile devices, when I woke up (on the 18th) the screen was doing exactly what I described. I hit the home button a few times and it stopped.
That night (the 18th) I plugged it back in to the usual spot before going to bed. The next morning (yesterday, the 19th), the screen was "flickering" again. I tried to press the home key a few times, as well as both the soft keys, nothing. In between "flickers" you can see the lock screen, where I have to enter a pin, but even while visible I can't type anything. So this time, to try to solve the problem, I held the power button + volume up to get to recovery and wiped the cache partition, rebooted the device, and viola, it worked again. Thinking that I may have to factory reset the device if the problem persists, I used Kies to backup all my data. I used the tablet the rest of the day, even plugged it in (in a different outlet than the one next to my bed) for a while and had no issues.
Last night (the 19th) I did pretty much the same thing, but this time, thinking that it might be an issue with the device getting too much power (the Quick Start Guide says: "Note: Connecting the travel adapter improperly may cause serious damage to the device."), I used a travel adapter from one of my other, USB 2.0 devices (the only difference between the adapters is the output: 2.0 = 5.0V—2.0A vs. 3.0 = 5.3V—2.0A, and output was specifically what I was concerned with). This morning (the 20th) the problem has returned, but now includes my second issue: the hard home button and both soft keys, back and recent apps, no longer function. So I immediately tried to wipe the cache partition and reboot, but this time it didn't work. Thankfully I had anticipated this yesterday and had that Kies backup, so I wiped the entire device back to factory settings. But alas, it was unsuccessful and the problem persists, including the loss of button functionality, with the exception of the power and volume buttons.
It is important to note that when I first got the Tab Pro 12.2 and set up the lock screen, I used the option that delays the actual locking of the device 10 minutes after screen timeout, but set it so that if I lock the screen with the power button it ISN'T delayed and immediately locks. That being said, a couple of times when the "flickering" stopped long enough to momentarily use the device, I was able to enter my pin and unlock. But when the screen starts flickering again, it locks the device, so the power button must be affected as well. Though since the first factory reset of the device, I haven't set up a pin. I have done several factory resets and none of them have worked. The best result has simply been limited (no back, recent apps or home key) and momentary functionality. I tried using Kies to do emergency firmware recovery, but every time I click the option it disconnects the device.
When Samsung tech support remotely accessed by device (I used one of the momentary functionality windows to download the required application) the agent was able to utilized soft and home key functionality, even though I couldn't. This tells me that it was hardware related, not related to UI/software.
So there are a couple of things I think may have caused/contributed to the problem:
The first, which I vaguely touched on above, is the power issue. Perhaps I have shorted the device out somehow. The outlet I use to charge things while I'm sleeping is on the wall behind my bed, so I have to use a common extension cord, one that has 3 outlets at the end. I have a light plugged into that and in the past have charged both my SGH-I467 (AT&T Note 8.0) and my SGH-I747 (AT&T S4 Active) with that cord and outlet. That is the only place I have charged the SM-T900 overnight, but none of the other power sources I have used have caused these issues.
The second possibility is a virus some sort. I have never used the Samsung app store on any of my other devices, but in order to update the Hancom Office suite I had to. Since I had an enjoyable time using it to that end, I decided to see what else I could find on Samsung's store. I downloaded a couple of things (the "Official Captain America game" and a couple wallpaper/theme apps) and was looking around the store to see if there was anything else I wanted to download. I found several apps that had reviews claiming they were trojans, so I immediately checked the reviews for the apps I had downloaded, but none of them had similar reviews. However, that does not mean they didn't have viruses.
So, what do the resident Android gurus of XDA think about these issues?
I tried searching all over the forums and elsewhere online for people having the same issues, but couldn't find anything. Have any of you ever encountered something similar to this?
Until recently, I hadn't ever heard of anyone getting a virus on an Android device. Are they common? What is the nature of Android viruses?
If these issues do have something to do with overcharging/shorting the device, how can I mitigate that problem? Tonight when I charge the tablet, instead of using the USB 3.0 charging cable, I am going to try just using the 2.0 cable. As I understand it, that can be done by simply plugging it into the right side of the port. Hopefully that will stop exacerbating the problem.
Again, I apologize for such a long winded post. I would like to thank you all in advance. If ever I have problems with an Android, you guys are the ones to ask!
*UPDATE* Before I started typing this I was attempting to run the Kies 'Firmware Upgrade and Initialization', as opposed to 'Emergency Firmware Recovery', to see if that too would disconnect the device. Unfortunately it said that my device needed to be charged first. So I shut it down and plugged it into a surge protected strip and began typing this post. Occasionally I would go over an check the charge. While it was shut down and charging I was able to use the home key to bring up the green battery. Once the charge looked like it was about 75% complete I turned it back on and lo and behold, the "flickering" issue looks resolved and so does the button issue. I can go back, enter the recent apps and task manager, and use the home key functions. For how long this will last, however, is unknown. I guess we'll see in the morning. I'll post what happens tomorrow.
What kind of case are you using? Some users have seen issues with some cases that use magnets for auto-sleep-wake. When the front of the cover is flipped back behind the tablet, the magnets seem to activate the auto-sleep feature

same issues here
Sounds exactly as the same issue I have had the last week. I have done several factory resets triad to avoid installing as many applications as I had prior the factory reset (to see If it was an app causing the issue). No solution yet but I will try your way with kies described above. I have a tab pro 8.4.

I am no guru, but it sounds like a loose connection. Maybe it is affected by temperature. Try it on a (not too) hot water bottle or on freezer packs.

It's not overheating. It can get warm, but it's never gotten hot. And I've had other devices that have seriously overheated and still functioned, albeit slowly.
**UPDATE**
After I got it working the night I originally posted I let it fully charge (it's important to note that I got it up to about 75% while it was off; green battery the only thing on the screen, and I had home button functionality), then disconnected it and disabled all the radios, put it in power saving and left it over night without power. Doing that I was able to use it all day yesterday. But while I was full-charging it, after it reached 100%, I noticed that it started acting up almost immediately. The sound was on and kept making the lock screen sound (that's how I noticed it from across the room). So it is tied to the power/lock key. But disconnecting it before it could get out of control mitigated the problem. Last night I was going to try to charge it over night with USB 2.0, but I fell asleep before changing the cable out, so it charged on 3.0 all night and is back in poor repair. I'm currently trying to full charge it while off to see if that gives me functionality again.
Either way, each time I fix it the solution becomes more difficult/timely than the previous one. It's clearly not getting better, so I'm going to have to send it in to repairs.

Sorta sounds like a screen grounding problem. I had a nexus seven with this issue and the charger seemed to really make it act up. Needless to say I gave that to my wife and bought this. If the digitizer is not grounded properly it will act up.
Turning on developer settings and set it to show touches on screen. See if when charging the screen registers more touches than you are doing.

Damn! That's an outstanding idea! The only downside is that last night I sent the tablet to Samsung's repair department, so I can't test that out. But once I get it back, if the problem persists I will definitely be doing that first. Thanks for the advice dottat.

Hey dude, check out dottat's reply. He's got a really good idea that may shed some light on the source of the problem. Unfortunately, I can't try it out. If you do it, let me know how it goes. Maybe you can take some screenshots? Either way, hopefully you can get something out of it.
