Then this is why we got custom roms. So I'm sure it will be ported some way.

yeah, HTC Desire will not support Gingerbread. Froyo will be the last Android update to Desire.
Gingerbread won't be out till January 2011 earliest. It will be a major change in UI and function over the Android 2.X strand. Desire would need 6 months to port it over. It also might not be easy to implement Sense UI on Gingerbread. Plus, new HTC phones will be due out in Q2 of 2011 I would guess, so Froyo will be last update on Desire.

As far as Google said that Android 3.0 would make UI peronalizations remain needless, there is no need for HTC to port Sense UI, isn't?

It would just be like using Windows Vista drivers on Windows 7....... Easy enough.

but if gingerbread is not coming to desire, i may liquidate this mobile set before it gets too old and get a new one
"Will the Desire get Gingerbread"??? - from HTC, I doubt it...
from XDA - somehow I think it will... can you imagine it all those devs working away thinking "new OS to play with on my Desire, no thanks!"... lol

The only thing Desire lacks from hardware is the internal memory. HTC definitely should work for Gingerbread update on recent models like Desire HD/Desire Z. If thats done porting that to Desire will not be too difficult using A2SD. Yea for some drivers it will be problem. Still I hope xda-devs can do that in few months. As far as official support is concerned I guess Desire will get an update from HTC for either the new Sense UI (as heard from lot of rumors) or a delayed Gingerbread support with less functions or UI features etc. At least Gingerbread is not too heavy update on Froyo. So I guess the fortune of Desire is not too dull unless HTC decides to archive it.
I don't feel like liquidating this nice piece of hardware before Honycomb arrives.
It's been seen running on N1 via submitted AirBench test, so Desire users will get it from the N1 release.
Hi
I just contacted htc support and asked them about the gingerbread. They replied me in this way:
With regards to your enquiry, Kindly note that all we have that gingerbread will be released, but we didn’t get specific information yet about the upgradeable device and regions as they are still testing the compatibility with all devices to decide the applicable devices.
Crikey... If HTC don't release 3.0 for the Desire, it'd be a pretty poor show... Being outdone by Apple?! After all, everything bar the iPhone 2G supports iOS4!

Trying the serious take:
It is said [read: rumoured], that Android 3.0 will mostly be about the interface. But one problem is that if you have HTC Sense, it'll be unlikely you will see this native 3.0 interface on your phone. But it should at least bring a lot of new stuff to your Desire. - Of course, it's possible to stop Sense from running, but you won't get exactly what I'm talking about this way.
The jump from a number like 2.1 or 2.2 to 3.0 is a rather big one, so I'm expecting a lot from it.
Also, anyone know of an official confirmation that 'gingerbread' is actually 3.0? Since there are rumours going about saying the next update would be called 'honeycomb'. It'd be too early to know anything about another version of Android if you ask me.
My biggest wish is just that this new interface thing they're working on will add the right amount of polish. That's one little thing I miss of Android, the consistency of applications and stuff - everything is different and there are no apps which share the same smoothness between eachother, but that's also due to how easily people can put something in the Android Market.
I know, if I want consistency and smoothness and the best looking interfaces, I should go for an iPhone. That's my own opinion by the way. It's just that I really like Android phones and the operating system, but dislike how everything looks so different from eachother. (unlike on the iPhone)
Please, Android 3.0, make the wait worthwhile..
Turns out 'Jaffacake' has been leaked and will be in a CM6 nightly soon ;D

Yep, as we've seen from the Froyo roms, as soon as Android 3.0 hits the Nexus there will be ports and when it hits the AOSP it'll be compiled for the Desire. It may not ever be officially released for the Desire by HTC, but we'll get it somehow.
From what I read at Phandroid, Android 3.0 (honeycomb or gingerbread or gingercomb or honeybread etc.) might never make it to the Nexus One or the Desire. Reason being it shall be catered to high end smart phones like the Evo and Droid X.
Plus the revamp of the UI and the need for a bigger display, most likely it won't make it to the Desire. There's also a rumor going around that the Android 3.0 shall have no other UI layered on top so no HTC Sense or Motoblur.
Well it's all still rumors. Let's just wait for Christmas okay?
P.S: I think Winnie the Pooh might love Android 3.0.

And you don't consider a Desire "high end"? Droid X and Evo might have a bigger screen but the resolution is the same as the Desire. The Evo, besides the bigger screen and 4G, isn't more powerful or "high end"-er than the Desire...

The Desire fits nicely above the required hardware specifications
Well who knows if they're 100% accurate... Still the Desires probably one of the best Android phones out there so it'll be possible they wouldn't make it so much more needed than what exists now.
Does anyone have the MeeGo rom for HTC Desire ? i just saw a dutch site with a video with Desire running MeeGo
http://www.htcdesireblog.nl/video/htc-desire-draait-op-meego-rom/
afaik there isnt a single nokia out with meego OS on it, nor will it be this year
i seriously doubt thats meego running - more like some chinese copycat OS?
more info here: h ttp://wiki.meego.com/ARM/MSMQSD
Wow, looks just like an ugly custom themed android!
Has anyone tried this in person? Seems pretty slow atm, but I think Meego will turn out pretty awesome
Also, how do I install it? Just flash it?
Anybody working From XDA
After watching NOKIA N9 OS i desperately want that on my DESIRE
i found this Video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtnfHNjcdzg
any update what is working or not???
i was about to start new thread on XDA but someone has already made googling always help
but thats not the same OS running on the N9. the version shown in the video looks like an android clone. The N9 runs MeeGo "Harmattan" 1.2
would love to get it on my desire. or maybe I'm getting the N9, as I can pick a new phone by january
I wonder if meego can really run in Desire without any problems.
I would also want to try it on my Desire if it can run perfectly
I am planning to get a new phone in summer next year, I believe Desire has served me long enough till then (2 years) let see what I can find and afford at that time.
I think it'll run on a desire. The N9 is not a dual core monster and the OS doesnt look like its stuffed with too many things (unlike sense).
Looking forward to the release

Because MeeGo is more open source than Android in several aspects. MeeGo is more like a typical linux distribution, without dalvik or that ****s. MeeGo can run Linux and Android application with minimal efforts, and of course, it's uses gnome libs and QT on Top to provide a very nicely user experience... Android is based on linux, but it took a different way, too different, and I think it is a wrong desicion.
I have to admit I really like Meego, but still prefer Android. And on Desire? No way..
how to flash it?
where i can fine meego image and for comile kernel desire for support desire ?

Very early , nothing works yet not even touchscreen, plus I think you'll have to compile the kernel yourself

When is the approximate time of android 3 release?
Regards
A quick Google...
http://www.techradar.com/news/phone...android-3-0-rumours-and-latest-updates-706243
in the link you gave says:
As we reported earlier in July, a Russian podcast details how Android 3.0 will be restricted to high-end handsets (and tablets). The podcast explained that Android 3.0 phones will require at least a 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM and 3.5-inch or larger displays.
UPDATE: A Korean electronics firm is claiming that Android 3.0 will actually require a dual-core processor to run.

So if we trust the first podcast, So both Desire and Desire HD will support android 3.0.
But if we believe on second podcast; even Google Nexus S doesn't support android 3.0.
Is android 3.0 the next version of android after 2.3 ? Or there will be another version between them?
Thanks again
Who knows...
I read somewhere about 2.4. I can't imagine 2.3 is going to be the end for now.
Well the android platform is most definately as open as it has ever been and thus there are no hardware requirements, as everyone is allowed to download and run the code on whatever device they want to.
So yes the desire will "support" 3.0, as it is built like any other android release. Though it will probably require some better hardware in order to run smoothly, but google will not set a minimum requirement, as it is an open platform.
The ui though is most definately not meant for phones, and Andy also said so in a interview with engadget at CES. He mentioned, that what we see in 3.0 on tablets is the way the android ui is going, but that the ui was made for tablets. So even though we are probably capable of running it, i don't think the experience will be that great
My hopes is for them to reveal something new for phones at google I/O
Thanks Dear Friends EddyOS, esudl and mortenmhp...

is android going out of smartphone market for ever and fill tablet markets? it will be so bad that we'll miss a powerful platform on smartphones
Of course it won't but Google have to compete with Apple so it was natural for there to be a different version for Tablets and Smartphones
Ok so it's acceptable if we'll have two branch from Android 3.0
It's acceptable that phones might skip 3.0 altogether! Who knows...just enjoy what you've got

Yeah You are right
I imagine that to make things easier for development for now 3.0 will be tablet only, and then eventually they'll just merge it all together... as said - phones will probably skip 3.0 all together - maybe join back at Android OS4.0?

Yes we can hope that with both Ubuntu and Firefox OS will let us control our devices. The future of smartphone OS look bright  By the way I don't think canonical is planning to port ubuntu for old or low-range phones for now. Especially since they might encounter performance issues. The community might have to work hard to port it on devices like the HTC Desire

It looks to me that our processor may just fall under the requirements, also it says the device will require 4gb internal storage. That may be a problem, as long as the system files are less than 250mb it should be possible using some sort of reverse mount with sd card
interesting. But I also suppose that our three years old smartphone won't be "fast" enough for it
