[Q] Zone vs. SkyDragon - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can anyone give me the pros and cons of going from zone to SkyDragon. I'm considering the rom change but don't want to have to go through all that process of they're both just as good. Thank you sorry if this is a repost.

My experience
I've been using SD since V2. Had the usual USB issue - now fixed. SuperSU updated every reboot - now doesn't happen. Underclocked and undervolted by tweaking the kernel. Get great battery life. WiFi has been turning off on sleep and has to be manually restarted lately. No biggie.
I tried Zone 10m deodexed and loved the screen tuning. Text was great. Liked the themes. However I was unable to undervolt the kernel even though the new version istated to be able to do so. Two MAJOR issues I had caused me to revert back to SD .... After a Google search I couldn't launch the browser or app associated wth a result. Similarly I couldn't tap a phone number or address in a text or email and call or get directions without copy/paste. May be just something I wonked up but stock and SD everthing is fine.
I did a clean flash twice with Zone with identical results. YMMV
I really want a smooth ASOP or CM11. The nightlies on my G2 were running pretty good.

I haven't tried SD, but I haven't had any of the (major) issues with zone described above. As mitbit2k3 said, ymmv.

[Q] Problems with SyndicateROM Frozen

Hi all,
I recently installed SyndicateRom Frozen after I got stuck on Eb13 thanks to Sprint. It worked out really well (so fast!) for a while but I am now having problems varying from strange but tolerable to very bad.
Here is the exact order of what I've done:
1) from eb13, I used odin to get DI18, then modem only to EC05, installed CWM3 and wiped data/cache/dalvik cache 3x each.
2) I used CWM3 to flash SyndicateRom Frozen (the latest version)
3) it worked pretty well, but then I (stupidly I guess) installed Go Launcher Ex and then everything went to hell
4) it ran for a while then suddenly EVERYTHING force closed. restarting it just gave me 9000 more force close boxes. so I...
5) wiped data/cache/dalvik 3x, re-flashed syndicateROM
So here I am now with the following problems:
1) The phone randomly freezes irreversibly (only solution is to pull the battery). It seems like it happens in the browser only (stock Syndicate browser)
2) The phone randomly freezes for a little while only (all the time)
3) The email app force closed (fixed this for now by clearing its data, from forum)
4) With auto-rotate OFF, nothing rotates EXCEPT my phone page.. What the heck? The phone page (ie click the phone icon) rotates regardless of what setting auto-rotate is on
5) The phone sometimes just decides to restart itself. And rarely, the restart never finishes.
6) Whenever I open up google navigation, it says "checking navigation availability" for 5-10 seconds. This never happened before
Now, what do I have running?
-SetCpu (this was running before I had go launcher and I had no problems). it's set very modestly -- 200-400 with screen off (and I dont have the no-wakeup problems some people talk about) and 400-10000 with the screen on, on demand.
-Ultimate Juice
If anyone knows what I can do to fix this, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.
Thanks for the detailed post - it helps. Your issues, though, are almost definitely kernel-related. Freezing is a sign you need to use kernel version 1.0.4 linked from the second post, or VisionKernel. Try VisionKernel first. If it solves your issue, you're good to go.
Anything related to screen rotation is outside of the ROM - run the sensor calibration process.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll try installing a new kernel when I get home tonight. BTW, awesome work with the ROM.

Thanks for your support!
im having similar problems, but mine only occur when the battery dies
after i restart a lot of my apps are force closing without even running them, and when i press the home button the screen is blank. (i also use go launcher)
You kno this same thing happened to me. I finally realized it was probably because I was restoring my apps with titanium. I decided to just re-download my apps and restore only app data with titanium (angry birds etc.). This helped me. And this was all after installing launcher pro. So there was some sort of conflict there. Are you restoring apps?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
i didnt restore my apps with titanium that time but i switched from go launcher to launcher pro and i dont have that problem anymore
Hmm...i guess just stay away from that launcher then...haha.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I'm not sure if his problems were strictly Go Launcher related. I've been using Go for 2 days now, with no problems (yet... knock on wood).

So here's an update:
-No, I'm not using Titanium backup.. I manually reinstall all my apps.
-I tried out the VisionKernel and it seemed ok for a bit, but I'm freezing again and my apps are all force closing. I uninstalled SetCpu completely in case that was causing a problem, but it didn't make a difference.
I'm going to try using v1.04 next... if that fails I guess I just can't use this rom
Would setting myself back to DI18 -> EC05 -> Syndicate possibly work? (as opposed to just re-flashing syndicate)
This was happening to me regardless of my kernel, and I even (twice) ODIN'd to [DI18?] then OTA to EC05 and then wiped everything 3 times, and flashed, 1st flash never works for me, so 2 flashes both times completely clean as well as when flashing kernels
1.0.2 worked just fine for me but as soon as 1.1.0 came I get freezes and FC's all over the place. I have given up on 1.1.0 and will try it when a newer version comes out
Media
First off want to say, love the ROM so far, you guys rock. After a few failed attempts at getting CWM 3 on my phone, I was finally able to do so and get everything installed. The only problem I'm having is with my media files. I get random FC when I play my music, my photo gallery doesn't appear, when I try to access my mp3's directly from my SD card, it says "file type not found" and it does not like the Zedge app at all. I've tried both the standard and fully loaded versions with the same results. I have the visionkernel downloaded, just in case I need to try it, but if at all possible, I'd like to stick with the twilight (I use the camcorder often). Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Yea, did basically the same thing last night. It went fine for a day, but it went to hell again tonight. Oh well, we'll have to wait for a new version I guess.

As noted many times in many places, if you're having issues with 1.1.0 that aren't freezing/battery life (these are both the kernel and have been discussed everywhere), a few simple troubleshooting steps will get you exactly where you need to be.

My issue is freezing, and I tried all of the alternate kernels. Sorry if my language wasn't precise- I mean new kernels.
I've actually given it one last try...I'm wondering if the clock is set too low for my phone by default, so I've got setcpu on min400 max1000. I'll let ya'll know how it turns out... (Stable so far although suddenly my home key doesn't work, hah.)

400mhz shouldn't be necessary. If your freezes were wakelocks, and you had your minimum frequency at 100mhz, that was your problem - not all devices can handle it, and need to be at 200mhz.

They were actually freezes during use-- I luckily never got a single wakelock.
I'm not sure if there was a pattern or not, but I think the Market, Go SMS Pro, stock Email, and stock browser were the main freezes. Then again, those are also the apps I use quite frequently
Sorry to double reply, but I can't edit yet.
@androikid
It just occurred to me that the freezes wouldn't be that bad if not for the force closes that occur afterward (due to data corruption). Maybe we should just turn journaling on so the a freeze just means a restart, rather than a re-flash.

[Q] Just flashed Syndicate to my Epic... questions

This is my second time rooting my phone. I wanted to get a better ROM and the Syndicate seemed like a good choice. Had a few problems and had to go back to the original stock and then download the Android update, root it and then flash the Syndicate. After a couple of tries it worked.
I ended up using OneClickRootCWM3.0.2.5-EC05 and that worked. Before I believe the problem was I had 2.5.
After root I flashed syndicatefro110-fullyloaded-signed. Love the look and still have more to explore on it, but I had a few questions.
1) One of the issues I had was on the home screen, it was taking a while for the apps and widgets to populate. It would look blank for several seconds and then finally show up. After I updated it is doing the same thing. Is this a known issue?
2) I like the battery %. I had a widget to tell me that, but I uninstalled it. No reason to have that now right?
3) Used juice defender before, do I need it now? Apparently the battery life should be a lot better. But one weird thing happened, my battery was 40% after flashing and using the phone for several hours. Then I rebooted and the phone came back at 13%. Never saw that before.
4) I backed up what I could with Titanium Backup but I wasn't sure how to just backup everything. It didn't look like some of my apps or my text messages were saved, but after the reboot those text conversations returned. Not sure what is going on there.
5) I wanted to install the Impaled Keyboard fix but it looks like with the Syndicate ROM the keyboard works better on its own. Is that part of that package?
Thanks and sorry for all the questions.

1 - not sure, this happens to me once in a while.
2 - no need for the widget anymore! I have not used Juice Defender with this ROM. I can get between 15-20 hours, when I was getting 10-12 stock. I have a couple emails pushing and twitter, and text often, a little AB here and there. So I "use" my phone.
3 - That has happened to me also. All you have to do is charge to full, the clear battery stats in CWM
4 - To get a full back-up I make a nandroid in CWM
5 - Not sure, I barely use my keyboard at all.

SRF was my second rom as well and I've been very happy with it.
1) I've noticed this happening as well but I use Launcher Pro (which I highly recommend). I'm not sure if the normal home screen shows up in the task manager but I just kill my home screen there and hit the home button and it seems to load it up faster than just waiting for it.
2) Welcome to convinience my friend. I used a battery percent app as well and you will no longer need it
3) I almost think Juice Defender gives me worse battery life than without it. SRF will get you great battery life, in addition to that I also use an app to "Freeze" the two DRM processes and I notice an improvement there as well. Just search the forums for DRM if you are curious about that. As stated in the above post every time you flash a new rom you are going to want to calibrate your battery so you avoid misreadings. There is an app on the market that I like called "Battery Calibrator" or you can do it through CWM.
4) I've always lost my conversations using Titanium Backup and I know a lot of people use Nandroid, may be worth looking into.
5) This is a recommended tweak by many SRF users. I've put it on recently but haven't really tested it.
follow up on DRM
Which apps are you using to freeze the DRM? I have Titanium backup but I can't find an option to freeze apps. I don't have the paid version so that might be the problem.
Can I manually do a force stop on DRM Content? I tried doing that but it didn't work. The button didn't change color like it should.
Going to play around with Launcher Pro as well. It looks pretty cool.
I am doing a calibration on the battery now too.
I highly recommend GO Launcher EX.
While you won't need Juice Defender, I would suggest you use Juice Plotter periodically - just to make sure there isn't something eating your battery.

ACS just released 1.1.1 standard edition yesterday. They are trying to get the fully loaded version released sometime tonight. Give that version a go when released, if you wanted to stay with fully loaded.
#1: I had this issue from DI18 OTA to EC05. This went away after a factory reset, and haven't seen it since.
#2: Your call if you want to use a battery widget or not. The % is displayed on the notification bar anyhow.
#3: Your call if you want to use it. Some still do for controlling their data usage across the board.
#4: Not really seeing a question there, but you probably just backed up everything. Upon data restoration, apps like that typically ask you to reboot for everything to display properly.
#5: It's now incorporated into v1.1.1, so no need to flash it separately unless you continue to use v1.1.0.

In Titanium, go to the Backup/Restore tab and tap (just tap -- don't hold down) on the two apps that start with DRM. It should bring up a screen that allows you to select "freeze".
Regarding Launcher Pro -- I paid for Launcher Pro (before flashing Syndicate) but have since moved to Go Launcher Ex which I like MUCH better. It's a lot like Launcher Pro but IMO has better implementation of folders.
Syndicate -- especially this newest 1.1.1 version -- is absolutely great. So fast and smooth. The only thing I didn't care for much is the red circle startup screens. I just found an alternate "Syndicate" startup screen in the Themes forum posted by EnervinE. I like it MUCH better!
Green power is better than juice defender and has an almost 0 config

Read through the new 1.1.1 thread and I can't believe how many questions theimpaler747 answered!
I was a little confused as to what I needed to do, but it was pretty simple since I already had Syndicate Frozen 1.1.0. I just flashed the new one (1.1.1) and all is well! I tested the wireless and wired tether and it worked great.
Still playing with it. Curious to see how it is on the battery.
Also will test out the keyboard fix since it says that is now included. It even blocks the ads in apps! Wow. This seems pretty cool.
all roms take a while to populate lists like that specially while media scanner is running, which will take a long time if you filled your sd card with titanium backup...
no reason to keep the batery % widget...

Wired tether worked for you with 1.1.1? I was never able to get mine to work and I saw many other people reporting similar problems. You're using the Twilight kernel that came with the ROM or did you flash a different one? Just curious since I couldn't get mine to work and I really would prefer USB tethering to WiFi.
I did use the twilight kernel and tested the usb tether and it worked. But I only tried it that one time.
Hmm, interesting. I tried mine with WinXP (with the necessary drivers I think) and with Ubuntu, but no luck. Maybe I'll give my wife's Win7 laptop a try.

setCPU
ryan4sc: If you haven't checked it out already, you'll want to download and install SetCPU. Now that your phone has a kernel like Twilight Zone, you can save even more battery juice by controlling the speed of the CPU with this app. You can get it from the Android Market or here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=505419
Yes and you can over clock with set cpu. Mine runs great at 1.3
Thanks for the heads up on that one. Trying it out now!
The apps taking time to load in my experience has to do with them being saved on your SD card. I backed up my SD card and then formatted it and the lag went away.
I use juice defender even though most recommend that its not needed. JD always gives me ridiculous numbers saying it doubled my battery life, but in reality it adds about 30 - 40% more time. I typically get 18 hours or so of moderate to heavy usage out of my stock battery.
And this is running genocide 1.1 overclocked to 1.4 and undervolted 25 at each step except 1ghz which is stepped down 50 using voltage control.

[Q] Nils' Business Gingersense 3.0 V2.3

I've been running Nils' V2.2 ROM for several days now, and here's my observations (I'd have made these in the dev thread, but I'm still < 10 posts):
Initially, lots of force closes, but this settled down after a day or so. Occasional hot reboots hung on for another day, but stopped when I installed Tiny's kernel, enabled smartass, and enabled fast-boot. Now, I get an occasional FC on "System App", particularly when I'm playing with configurations, but other than the popup, I see no other side effects. Applications on the SD card are easily lost, and pretty difficult to get back to the SD. When I reinstall and try to move it to the SD again, I get failures once or twice, then it moves. Other than this, I find it a little more laggy than is really ideal. I did eventually overclock the high end, but this only improved the lag a little.
Other mods I installed are the black lock ring, the Rosie 5X4 app drawer, and WildStang83s Bunker Buster DTR.
So, that said, it's a really sexy ROM, and I can't wait to see what comes with V2.3.
First question, will flashing V2.3 wipe out the DTR mod? I'm assuming it will.
Next, if the DTR is wiped, can I flash the same one, or will V2.3 have changed enough that a new DTR is needed?
Thanks a bunch!
Lou
I have run a variant of the GingerSense ROM's for a month, haven't had any of the issues you raised.
Are you restoring anything to the ROM? Particularly system data along with an app?
Assume the appropriate HBOOT, cwm, and minimum radio are in place as well as ample room on the sd card?
Also assume complete wipes of data, caches, system, factory reset, boot, etc?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App
smtom gave you your answer. If you are getting FC's or any other strange behavior because something like the wrong hboot or residue from the prior ROM is still there.
Follow the instructions in my first post to clean the system out and reflash.
Thank you both for the suggestions.
When I flashed 2.3 over 2.2, I did clear the cache and Dalvik *before* taking the backup, just to be safe, and it does seem a fair bit snappier now. Still not quite the interface speed I was seeing with stock Sense 1.0, but pretty close, and it really is so much cooler ...
As far as restoring system data, the first time I tried V2.2 (the day it was released), I did make the mistake of restoring some of the system stuff - like Mail accounts - I might even have inadvertently restored the old Mail app itself, which was clearly a dumb thing to do. It was my first non-stock ROM, so I suppose it can be chalked up to Newbie mistakes. Anyway, that resulted in a lot of ugliness that was obviously not your ROM, and I knew it. I was a lot more careful not to do anything so dumb the next time around, but I did get some instability anyway. Maybe something got left behind, I don't know.
Now, I limit restores to user apps and only restore data for some of the more annoying apps to set up - 1Password, DropBox, SugarSync, Facebook, things like that - not GMail, Mail, or contacts. I manually re-enter all the mail accounts and sync contacts from Google.
Wouldn't it be nice if Google gave you the option to track your app installs (free apps too, not just the paid ones) and gave you a batch re-install button?
I probably pushed my luck a little by flashing the DTR before rebooting from the ROM flash, but so far no problems at all.
When I do see a small lag in the homescreens, it seems to hang on for a second or two, then the phone seems to get itself in gear and the home screens flip like nobody's business. I still haven't put Tiny's kernel back on though. I'll stick with the stock version for awhile at least.
I do have SetCPU installed, set to on-demand from 245MHz to 998MHz. I haven't set up any profiles though. I know they are a bad idea with Tiny's kernel, and probably no problem with the stock Gingersense kernel, but I wanted to see how it works with the default configuration for awhile.
I am also using the 2.15.00.07.28 radio. I tried the leaked 2.15.10.07.07 version, but didn't find any improvement, so I went back.
My HBoot is 0.92.
I still haven't put the Rosie 5X4 app drawer back in. I was wondering if there's a way to disable the "paging" scrolling behavior and enable the smooth scrolling that Sense 1.0 used?
Thank you both again.
Nils, this seems like mostly minor updates, but whatever happened, it's a lot more snappy and stable for me now.
Cheers!
Lou
Yee haw! Appbrain will track and batch reinstall applications, fwiw.

Can't set my contact card image
It seems every time I try to reflash, some other minor thing comes up. Up to now, I was always getting the image I had set for my profile on Google with my contact card, and in my Handcent conversations.
Now, not only is my image not there, but I can't set it. Seems I can't set *any* of the contact images. At least before, I could modify my Google contact in the Google web interface, but now I'm not sure that would work.
I've tried fixing permissions through CWM (5.0.2.0), and even tried manually changing permissions on /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts.files/* to 666 as detailed here for a similar issue.
Any ideas what could cause this, or how I could fix it?
Thanks (again) in advance
Lou

Common Blu Kuban problems

I am running the Blu Kuban, and have been having problems with talk failing and random reboots. I follow the Rom posts from devs pretty regurly. I have seen that Ruj, and others reccomend removing the themed version of talk, and installing the stock version that is availble in the Rom updater. I tried this about a week ago, but even after fixing permissions in the recovery my phone would keep restarting till I reinstalled the rom. I was working just fine after a fresh, and wiped out install up untill a few days ago. I am getting the messages again that my talk app is failing, or sometimes not responding. It was not untill I started messing around with goveners that I started having this issue. I had the default hyper after install, but switched it to wheatly. It was not untill I switched to hotplug two nights ago that I have been having issues with talk. I was having the same problem with the newset Kuban kernal with random reboots of the phone, and thought it was with govener, as that is all I have changed in Ex tweaks. The mods I have installed are; Blank pull down, No rotate/no landscape/no crt, In call sms notification, and finally no battery bar. My restarts of the phone have been random, they can be from anything from loading facebook, turning on wifi, adjusting phone volume, to even putting phone to sleep. I guess after my long rant of problems is there anything that I can do differently to make phone run better? I am not overclocking or underclocking. Have not played with voltages. I turned my screen off profiles off too. I am thinking that unless it gets worse, I will wait for Ruj, to release any new kinds update. Is it the kernel that is giving the problem? I saw someone posted to try older kernel version, is that very dependable?
Also I know this post is getting pretty long, but can someone please tell me if there is any sort of geographical list of modems that work best in certain area's? http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Epic_4G_Touch/Modems this showed me that there is a bunch to try, but I want to know which ones work best in area before I go messing around. Does Sprint use different ones in different locations is what I am asking about modems.
There is a talk fix in the 4th post of the faq.
As far as the modems, they are kind of a subjective choice. My phone is best on fg20 and my wife uses fe22. You just goes try them all until you get one you like. I currently use the latest Kuban kernel and do not have any reboot issues. If you keep having issues I would recommend a fresh install or setting extweaks back to the defaults, then making adjustments one at a time until you are happy with the setup.

Mi 5s MIUI 7.12.28 - WiFi automatically turns on

Hi guys,
I've updated the phone to the last global beta - 7.12.28 and noticed one big issue and a few other smaller ones. I hope someone might have ideas on how to fix them.
The WiFi turns on as soon as the screen is off. What I've done so far is to make sure no app has permission to turn the WiFi on (using the built in permission manager). I've cleared cache and rebooted the phone several times.
Another issue is the MIUI memory optimization is always disabled, no matter if you change it to something else or not.
And the third one that I can think of right now is the region - it always reverts back to China. Now this has been outgoing for a while, so it might be something with my phone.
What I've done on the phone is to root it and have Xposed install and active. I've also ran Unbloatmi, great script to get rid of apps you don't need. I haven't tried alternative roms like Lineage.
Recently I installed floppy kernel, but the wifi issue remains with the stock kernel too.
I'm open to suggestions
Issue resolved with the next update.
I suggest to you to use global stable. It's old, but global dev is always bugged for this phone. Do what you want, but my experience is bad
Yeah it's always preferred to use stable roms on phones in production environment. But I like to live on the edge And I got into the routine to remove most of the unnecessary apps right after the update. So overall - the phone is quite stable. But now it has the same MAC as my wife's phone. Go figure...
