Common Blu Kuban problems - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I am running the Blu Kuban, and have been having problems with talk failing and random reboots. I follow the Rom posts from devs pretty regurly. I have seen that Ruj, and others reccomend removing the themed version of talk, and installing the stock version that is availble in the Rom updater. I tried this about a week ago, but even after fixing permissions in the recovery my phone would keep restarting till I reinstalled the rom. I was working just fine after a fresh, and wiped out install up untill a few days ago. I am getting the messages again that my talk app is failing, or sometimes not responding. It was not untill I started messing around with goveners that I started having this issue. I had the default hyper after install, but switched it to wheatly. It was not untill I switched to hotplug two nights ago that I have been having issues with talk. I was having the same problem with the newset Kuban kernal with random reboots of the phone, and thought it was with govener, as that is all I have changed in Ex tweaks. The mods I have installed are; Blank pull down, No rotate/no landscape/no crt, In call sms notification, and finally no battery bar. My restarts of the phone have been random, they can be from anything from loading facebook, turning on wifi, adjusting phone volume, to even putting phone to sleep. I guess after my long rant of problems is there anything that I can do differently to make phone run better? I am not overclocking or underclocking. Have not played with voltages. I turned my screen off profiles off too. I am thinking that unless it gets worse, I will wait for Ruj, to release any new kinds update. Is it the kernel that is giving the problem? I saw someone posted to try older kernel version, is that very dependable?
Also I know this post is getting pretty long, but can someone please tell me if there is any sort of geographical list of modems that work best in certain area's? http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Epic_4G_Touch/Modems this showed me that there is a bunch to try, but I want to know which ones work best in area before I go messing around. Does Sprint use different ones in different locations is what I am asking about modems.

There is a talk fix in the 4th post of the faq.
As far as the modems, they are kind of a subjective choice. My phone is best on fg20 and my wife uses fe22. You just goes try them all until you get one you like. I currently use the latest Kuban kernel and do not have any reboot issues. If you keep having issues I would recommend a fresh install or setting extweaks back to the defaults, then making adjustments one at a time until you are happy with the setup.

[Q] CM7 eventually just starts showing black screens instead of most things. Why?

This problem only really happens after my phone has been on for days at a time. I have had this problem on the latest stable and latest nightly for CM7 (each one cleanly installed after a total wipe).
What happens is that most screens are replaced with entirely black ones. The most consistent example of this is the settings screen. The first Settings screen (which shows Display, Sound, etc) loads correctly. If I click on any of those, I just get a black screen. This will happen in other applications too, like Baconreader or Browser. Also, another connected issue is that the lockscreen won't animate once this problem starts. I can drag it down to unlock, but the rotary wheel won't move at all. If I drag to the right to load my custom app, the lockscreen won't go away and it will force my to pull the battery.
Has anyone else run into this problem? I'd just like to know I'm not alone. I'm not really expecting a bugfix, especially when I'm not even posting a Logcat.

I suffered this same thing today. Thankfully a full restart fixed out, but I would love to learn a real solution.

Next time it happens I will, I'm just afraid it will break Facebook/SMS integration like I've had happen before.
It's just so weird since it breaks everything. The lockscreen, the options, Pandora's station list, the browser, and it goes on and on. It's like there's some sort of display mode that gets screwed up.

What version are you using. I'm going to try to install nightly 77 today after a fresh wipe.
I was seeing the same thing. Now I'm trying to figure out why my data speeds are so painfully slow on CM7 so I can't offer a fix. Flashing back to Warm to troubleshoot 3G.
I get these issues all the time no matter what kernel or nightly I'm running. It has forced me back to sense roms lol
Same problem here. I updated stable mod from stable mod. Reinstalled. Going on 4 days, no issues so far.

I have the same exact issue. This never happens on a sense rom. I did some tweaks to my system over the past week and I haven't had to reboot since this past Saturday or Sunday. I thought I had fixed it!
Then...
My phone started doing it this morning after I turned on 4G at work, literally as I was writing this post it started doing it. I then turned off 4G.. and it instantly went away. Turning back on 4G and it isnt doing it right now. Now my phone is doing something weird with go sms pro... when I get a text and I respond via the pop up message.. once my text moves to a second line I dont see what I am typing anymore... and now it has progressed to where the pop up box isnt refreshing after I send a message (this is all happening while I am typing this post). Now the phone has become laggy and somewhat unstable... rebooted! All is well. So I went roughly 4-5 days without a reboot... where as before I had to reboot at least once a day.
Thats about the best I can get with these settings:
CM7 7.0.3.1
Savaged Zen 2.6.38.5 CFS > Using SavagedZen Governor, min 384 max 998
Displaying some animations (read somewhere that is a "fix".. or helping extend the time it takes for the Black screen of death to appear).
This is after several full wipes, several when I was running Amon RA recovery 1.8 then updated to the latest and did it two more times. After upgrading Amon and wiping I did not use any backups and started completely from scratch.
So I am not sure what else to do. Some people are getting this, some are not.

LOS with EK02

I dont think im the only one with LOS after EK02, correct? Lately it almost seems worse. When i leave the 4g on all day long, I can't tell if I am experiencing a LOS until I turn it off.
For example, I was able to browse the web this morning, but when i turned off my 4g, the 3g icon never returned - so i rebooted my phone. Of course after i rebooted my phone, i'm receiving text messages that I missed during the LOS. This phone is starting to really piss me off. I was happy with it for the first few months, but now it has become a real pain. People think you are ignoring messages. My phone is completely stock, and if there is a rom that works to solve this, i'll be rooting today.
I can't say I blame you for your frustration. A new modem has been leaked called EL13 that you can get here.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1389874
People are having success flashing it on top of the stock ROM with EK02 update that you now have. I plan on trying it today.
Just my personal experiences. The only time I got a LoS on the EK02 was when i was running SetCPU and had messed with the Voltages. Once I reset Voltages back to stock rom voltages or removed SetCPU, regardless of rom my LoS issues always went away. Again this is only my experiences and in no way reflects what may be the root cause of the issue on the EK02 rom. I was clearly setting something to low for the phone to maintain service is all I was trying to point out.

Could my phone be degrading somehow?

I've been having the strangest issues lately.
I'm running task's AOKP with ktoonsez's kernel. For the past month or so I've been getting random home button lag, wakeup stuttering, and general stuttery animations.
And I've recently discovered that I absolutely cannot use my phone at all while it is playing audio. If I perform ANY sort of action, music will stutter really badly (unlocking the device, turning off the screen, opening a folder on my homescreen, opening an app, clicking something within an app, literally almost ANY action that involves tapping the screen will cause a stutter). Happening on both Underwear and ktoonsez kernels, even on stock settings.
I've tried clean wiping many times (at least 5 times in the past 3 days) and clean wipes tend to fix the issues initially, but things gradually get sluggish again after a few days. I've tried ktoonsez's kernel on straight up stock settings, and I've tried task's Underwear kernel on stock settings, and I still get these things.
Now, I see no one else in any of the threads having issues like this. So I really don't think I can blame the ROM or kernel.
So is my phone just all of a sudden hating custom ROMs and kernels? Is my processor caving or something? I can't think of any other good reasons why my phone and only my phone is buckling under the latest ROM releases. I've tested my SD card and speeds are what they should be.
Do I need to literally purge my phone, return to bone stock firmware, and start over? I'm not sure how else I can 100% determine whether it's my phone acting up or something software/firmware related. But I'm wary also of issues with jumping from 4.2 to 4.1 and back.
This is all just kinda frustrating. I'd just like to know whether it's possible that my phone is simply deteriorating before me in some form or fashion. Could the flash memory be acting up? Could the GPU be problematic? I really have no idea.

downgrading your phone shouldn't be a problem at all.
download stock, wipe clean, flash through odin.

Try a full wipe and a clean flash first without ktoonz kernel. I know some phones just can't run it without issues.

I've noticed AOKP's rom and Task's AOKP can sometimes have issues like these, even when doing a full wipe/clean install when coming from anything other than stock. Once you go back to stock, wipe and reflash, I think you'll be alright. When I flash aokp that way, it's usually such a good running rom I have to talk myself into even considering putting anything else on my phone
So. I decided to wipe, flash back to bone stock 4.1.1 through Odin, re-root (root-injected tar method), re-install TWRP, wipe, and re-install AOKP fresh (no ktoonsez kernel).
On the fresh install, I logged into Google, downloaded Play Music, and started playing an MP3. Aaaaand...the stuttering is still there. Music still stutters essentially every time I touch something on the screen.
And every few transition animations is still choppy.
What to do now?
I suppose I'll re-download AOKP to see whether I got a bad download, but I doubt it. EDIT: Nope, same hash.
My phone just doesn't seem to like the latest AOKP builds very much...
I'll play around with it some more.
Just go to recovery, wipe cache n dalvik, and you should be good

Did you get the same lag and abrupt behaviour when using a different music player app?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
I would try a different music player and perhaps even a 4.1.2 aokp instead of the latest 4.2. This would help narrow down/eliminate the issue
I also have this stutters in any rom/kernel i test. micro stutters here and there, when a few weeks ago there was none. all of a sudden stutters and lags on drawer and opening applications. antuntu benchs show the same results so i dont get it.
for future reference: benchmarks don't matter here. there are a few who use them to show how good their phone is, what really matters is real world performance.
if it's happening with everything including stock, I'd gander that it's a hardware issue and you should try for a warranty exchange.

Or just flash another ROM

[Q] Zone vs. SkyDragon

Can anyone give me the pros and cons of going from zone to SkyDragon. I'm considering the rom change but don't want to have to go through all that process of they're both just as good. Thank you sorry if this is a repost.
My experience
I've been using SD since V2. Had the usual USB issue - now fixed. SuperSU updated every reboot - now doesn't happen. Underclocked and undervolted by tweaking the kernel. Get great battery life. WiFi has been turning off on sleep and has to be manually restarted lately. No biggie.
I tried Zone 10m deodexed and loved the screen tuning. Text was great. Liked the themes. However I was unable to undervolt the kernel even though the new version istated to be able to do so. Two MAJOR issues I had caused me to revert back to SD .... After a Google search I couldn't launch the browser or app associated wth a result. Similarly I couldn't tap a phone number or address in a text or email and call or get directions without copy/paste. May be just something I wonked up but stock and SD everthing is fine.
I did a clean flash twice with Zone with identical results. YMMV
I really want a smooth ASOP or CM11. The nightlies on my G2 were running pretty good.
I haven't tried SD, but I haven't had any of the (major) issues with zone described above. As mitbit2k3 said, ymmv.

So is there no fix/ solution for random reboots?

I got my Nexus 7 when it first came out last year, rooted it, installed TWRP, and have been on several different ROMs since. Didn't have any issues with random reboots for several months. Early this year, I started having an issue where the tablet would freeze while I'm using it, then automatically reboot itself. I thought perhaps it was a problem with the ROM I was running, but I had switched ROMs a few times after that, and every single ROM I've been on since then has had the same problem. It usually only happens when I'm browsing the Internet (with Chrome being my browser of choice), but I've had it happen once while using the camera app, as well.
The other day, I upgraded TWRP to the latest version, and I installed the 4.04 bootloader in preparation for Lollipop ROMs. I was hoping on some slim chance that perhaps an upgraded bootloader might fix the problem, but I'm still getting random reboots.
I know I've seen people talk about random reboots as well, but in the past, I never saw anyone find any kind of solution. Is there one, or is it one of those things I just have to live with, at this point? It's odd to me that I didn't start experiencing this issue right away, and that it only started several months after I had had the device. To me, that makes it seem like it's not a hardware issue/ defect, but I guess no one has been able to pinpoint what the problem is, why it occurs, and how to fix it, huh?

I'd tend to agree with you it's a software thing. However, my approach would be a bit more radical than yours: that I would erase everything, including formatting the internal storage twice (after making a backup, of course), then install a completely clean rom, use it for a while to make sure it doesn't act up again before restoring any apps.
On the side, I've seen a Nexus doing random reboots whose owner had opened the back and bent the cover somehow, which slightly depressed the power button. While the button operated normally, this condition forced it to "click" randomly, which caused the reboots. It stopped after the owner replaced the back cover. You might want to check this part. Good luck.
Most of the time, random reboots are kernel related. If you are overclocked try to set max CPU lower and see if the problem fixes itself. If you don't overclock try installing something like Trickster Mod, and lower max CPU to see if that helps. What ROM and kernel are you running?

I always recommend flashing back to stock to rule out software issues. If it continues, you've got a hardware issue.
I haven't really messed around with kernels, I've typically just used whatever was included in a particular ROM, and I never adjust to overclock or anything like that. I don't remember what all the ROMs I've been on are, but I've been on CM before, and I'm currently using CleanROM. I think the only time I ever specifically tried a different kernel was a while back, when I flashed an Elemental kernel, but I've since wiped and been on a different ROM.
For now, I'm trying to hold out wiping anything until a good, rooted build of Lollipop is available, at which point, I'll try wiping out everything, including internal storage, and see if that helps.
I guess I could also try flashing back to stock before I do that, though. I think I've seen one stock ROM for the N7 floating around. The only problem is, it's really hard to "test" this, because the reboots are very inconsistent. The other day, after I had updated the bootloader, I was browsing Chrome for over an hour before I got a random reboot. One time, I was browsing Chrome for an hour and had 4-5 random reboots within that hour. So, that makes it difficult to determine if it's fixed in a timely manner. :/
Alright, so now that there's a proper build of Lollipop out, I did a factory reset and wiped internal storage (twice), and I'm now running stock Lollipop. I spent about an hour or so getting everything set up, and no reboots thus far; but the reboots mainly occur when I'm using Chrome, and I didn't really do any browsing, as I was getting all my accounts and apps and whatnot set up. Hopefully within the next couple of days, I'll have used it enough to get a good idea as to whether or not I'm still experiencing issues.
So far, no reboots, though i don't want to jinx it, heh... I'll be glad if the issue is finally fixed, but I'll also feel kinda dumb that all it took to fix it was something as simple as wiping internal storage and/ or reflashing a stock ROM. Lollipop is pretty nice, as well.
Yeah I'm using a custom version of L myself. You need to flash custom kernel to get working root access with SuperSU BETA 2.19
