Yes, Kitkat changes write permissions to external sd card, hence your problem. There are fixes, try this

Need more info.
Are you hibernating something you shouldn't?
What kind of card?
Have you tried replacing the card to make sure its the device?
Have you fixed the permissions in /etc/permissions/platform.xml?
Have you rooted?
Custom recovery?
Does recovery recognize your sdcard?
Did you eat breakfast this morning?

SD Card Problems in 4.4
I think there is a issue since the upgrade to 4.4 I have just been on mine and twice it shows No SD card present if you restart it comes back ok
Same card as before update so I can only assume its a issue in the 4.4 program
As ggogel don't seem to like SD cards anyway !!
No problem here with sd card after upgrading to kitkat VIA OTA
I'm in Australia too, updated yesterday to V50020a. Have experienced intermittent SD card issues (presumably random unmounting), although the 32gb Sandisk did cop a massive workout courtesy of Play Music's new ability to save to it - loving that! I'm pretty sure this G Pad 8.3 had "quiet time" before the update - can't seem to find it now so I have to turn the volume off at night. This is annoying because it plays a notification sound every time the SD card unmounts Maybe I missed something, suggestions appreciated

Play Music copied about 2gig to it , did so in chunks as the card kept dropping out. I've had no issues with it today and it has not unmounted at all, although I don't think any apps have required access to it since yesterday. Maybe the SD card went into shock yesterday with all the writing it got, it usually is scantly accessed. I should point out that this KitKat update offers the single most useful feature for me - and that is Play Music's new setting of being able to cache to the External SD card - as a subscriber with a large library I can now store so much more for playback offline!!! Very pleased.

I am also very happy with play music and play movies able to save my favorite movies and music to SD card.. even the built-in web browser is able to download files straight to SD card. But I still can't write to SD card by using third-party file manager like FX file manager.

Via a file manager on the tab? Since upgrading to 4.4.2 I can not. I've seen the work around but it involves rooting which I didn't want to do yet.

After updating to 4.4.2 I also noticed that my SD Card is constantly unmounted/mounted which is pretty annoying. Formatting SD Card again didn't help. I have got V50020a ROM, anyone encountered this on V50020b?

You are not allowed to write on external storage with third-party applications on KitKat. Only Some Google apps and LG apps can write to external storage

Yes is correct, with kitkat are restricting write access to SD cards. I use ES file explorer, but there still limitations in its use.

This really sucks! I often copy content to it via wifi, now I can not I don't want to root just yet. If I knew this would have happened I would not have upgraded yet.
Only way is root to fix this or wait for a Update
I also have this problem with 20b!

What do you mean, trouble reading or writing to the sdcard? Try formatting the card on the phone itself, that usualy works.
What are you trying to do with the card? it might be that you just are not aware with how Android Kitkat treats the sd card slot?

Probably......only File Manager can write or delete files on my sd card, Xplore or a different Manager can't, is it normal in KitKat?

Apps can only write and edit files that they themselves created on the SD card which is why third party apps are not working. It is to stop rouge apps deleting / creating / modifying files that they shouldn't be.

With files you mean system files or files created by you? You should be able to delete or move files with an alternative file explorer or you might try gaining root (towel root is easiest) to gain admin rights.
If you root your phone, you can remove the limitations that were added in KitKat.
Many 'newbie experts' who say that an 8 or 16GB phone is fine as you can move apps etc. to an SD card are finding out the hard way that KitKat restrictions prevent using the card the same way as it used to be in older Android versions unless the device is rooted.

Someone else had the same problem and they did an equipment swap and the new G3 didn't have the problem.
So it might be the SD card slot itself or its interface and a exchange might be neccessary.
Hi there,
As we all know there is an issue with moving files from internal to external storage due to implements from kitkat.
I was just wondering if there is a was a solution to this without rooting?
I am unrooted and was hoping there was a fix for it.
Thanks in advance.

I have been looking into this, the past 3 days and from my research I could say the answer is... no.
Everything I found on the net requires root access.
On my previous phone, a Note 3, I faced the same issue and when I formated the ext sd from within the phone, the problem mysteriously went away and I had -full- access to the ext sd.
Tried it on the M8 but no luck.
Why dont you also give it a try (after backing up your ext sd ofcourse) and tell me if you had any result.
My M8 is international version by the way. No carriers.

I'm rooted but I think I remember being able to transfer files between the internal and external storage by connecting my phone to my computer and doing it on my computer. Try that if you haven't already.

Yes my friend, via pc it is possible. I suppose the OP,like myself, is looking for a solution from within the phone.
Thanks.

With the Update to 4.4.3 HTC included a file explorer to give a solution for this kitkat security feature. I already flashed the OTA to 4.4.3 aka firmware 2.22.401.4 and in fact moving files from the internal storage to sd card works with the file explorer delivered by HTC.
Hope this answer helps!?

If you're rooted, you can try this SDFix app. I had to use it so I could use TiBu to restore my apps when I got the G3.
I am able to move files to the SD card with a file browser on the phone, just can't safe to it directly. Can't file transfer to a mac either.
Tried that app fix but it doesn't appear to work.

Pull the notification panel down while connected to pc/mac and hit the usb noti, then select mtp
I updated my phone to 6.0 and then rooted it via this link : http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/root-twrp-marshmallow-d855-30b-t3286268
Now is says SD card corrupted. I tried various sd cards it always says the same. I tested the card on the pc/other phone and it works ! It also shows in TWRP. I also noticed in platform.xml, there were no permissions for sd card (write/read/access) so i added them, but its still the same.
Help !
actually now i've put in a 128MB card and it works :S. Any idea what could be wrong with the 64GB sandisk card ?
Nothing wrong. Each time you turn the phone off, if you have set the SD card as external memory, it will show up as corrupted. Just accept reformat and it will be ok.

Okay i formatted it with the phone and it still shows as corrupted, did the same on the pc. If i plug the card in samsung galaxy s 2 it works ...
Well, i formatted the card to Fat32 and it worked, seems like it doesn't support exFat. Great ...
Turns out hacerpermissivo was the problem, the root method.
@massivebanana
Dear friend, i'm also facing the same issue. You mentioned that the problem was with the root method. How did you manage to get around it? Did you have to unroot in order to get this fixed?
Cheers,
Dimitrios

Well i "reinstalled" the os and didn't root it. Instead used the temporary root. If you want it rooted, downgrade to lolipop, root then upgrade to mm via the twrp method
