Hello, this is my first post on this forum, though I have lurked on XDA since as far back as my droid eris.
I have looked around the kindle fire forum for the answers I seek, but I have not seen a thread that helps. If I am asking a redundant question, please kindly show me the relevant thread(s) and I will read them.
I was at a small computer store my friend owns in our tiny little town (white hat computer solutions minersville, pa), when a mutual friend and former classmate of ours brought us a Kindle Fire D01400 with a cracked screen he bought off ebay. the previous owner claimed it worked despite the cracked screen, From a hardware standpoint that is quite correct, as you can see everything yet, and the touchscreen responds.
However, they neglected to mention they were selling one that already was modified, it is running TWRP 2.4.4.0 and has an improperly flashed ROM on it ( the stock keyboard crashes, home screen soft key does nothing, gmail works, but google play store does not). sideloading a keyboard app on fixed the keyboard, but the gapps with the exception of gmail don't function. I figured doing a wipe and flash of a new rom and gapps would be a good starting point to attempt to fix this problem.
However when I go into TWRP recovery and try to wipe the system, dalvik, or cache, the operation fails.
I have tried taking the TWRP manager app and sideloading it and using that to update to the latest TWRP. but the version number remains at 2.7.0.1
So my question is, with the above details kept in mind: How exactly do I go about fixing this tablet and making it a functional piece of android hardware for my friend/customer?

Downloading and trying it now. Thanks, I usually do my best to find relevant threads before posting, I am not sure how I missed that one.
Will post back with results as soon as I am done
EDIT:
Flashed it to twrp 2.6.1.0 otter I still can't use the wipe option. tried factory reset figuring i could just push the rom and gapps down using adb again, but factory reset also failed. is there a permission I can reset using adb?

It's not stickied and 'flashable recoveries' can be misleading, but that is what they are called by many.

When I boot into TWRP and execute adb devices i get

In TWRP on the second row at the top, along with the battery level (100%) and time 5:26pm, it says SIMULATING ACTIONS in all caps. is it supposed to say that or should it say something else

Previous owner of the device had the TWRP recovery set to use simulation mode. I was unaware that was even an option since i was not familar with TWRP( my previous android flashing experiences used clockwork) after unchecking those boxes in the advanced settings, I was successfully able to flash a rom and gapps, and everything was perfect after that.
sorry for wasting so much time on this, I really missed something simple on this one.

I have been trying to root my KF 6.3.1 using the KFU 0.9.6
When I connect it shows
Status : Online
BootMode : 4000
I proceed to 'install permanent root with superuser'
It runs a lot of code...
which has a lot of error messages in it...
Finally... it shows SUCCESS...
The SU app also gets installed on the device...
But I tried to run apps that require rooted device and they give an error message saying 'your device needs to be rooted.'
Attaching output of root operation with the message.
Experts and Gods - please help!
NOTE --
Currently using Windows 7 as laptop OS
ADB drivers seem to be working correctly because I'm also able to push install apps on the device using the "adb install xyz.apk" method.
The device shows as Android Phone > Android Composite USB Interface in device manager.
do you have allow installation from unknown sources checked? And you say that device manager shows android composite usb interface? it should say android composite adb interface.

shift+ right click on the tools folder in the kfu and open in command then type adb devices if its return by a string of numbers that shows your device connected
It's not downloading the files... second person it happens to.
If you're going to try downloading them manually, do so from files\files.log and make sure the hashes match those present in that same file, to avoid issues.
Get the ones called openrecovery-twrp-blaze-2.1.1.img and fff-u-boot_v1.4a.bin.
Place the downloaded files in recovery (make that folder if it doesn't already exist) with the names twrp.img and fff.bin, respectively.
Or just go with the manual method for rooting: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1568340
And then install TWRP and FFF separately. FFF is particularly important to have an extra layer of protection.
Also, have a read here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1552547
Stuck with same problem, please help me.
Iam a newb . I am also stuck with same problem .It says rooted succesfully but its not rooted. please help me how to root kindle fire firm ware 6.3.1 manually . iam unable to understand how to do in windows7.
Thanks in advance.
Try redownloading kindle fire utility seems its missing some parts also you must be connected to the internet for it to fetch the required files
I am having the same problem. I ran the KFU, it didn't install TWRP or FFF but gave the message at the bottom that SU had been installed.
Couldn't actually use any programs that required root.
I went and tried to run the KFU from C:/ (first mistake, I did not move it to C:/ before executing), but now it does even less than the first time around, it looks like everything is failing.
Also, I downloaded and dropped the TWRP and FFF files in the recovery folder, that appears to work but the MD5 checksums are not adding up. It appears that the KFU cannot find the files.txt to see where to download the recovery files, nor to confirm the checksum.
So I tried to do it the manual way, I can get as far as running the fastboot flash commands. They get "OKAY" for both twrp and fff. Now I am expecting the kindle to reboot, but it just sits there, in fastboot mode. When I try to run a reboot command, it says no device.
Ideas?

Hope you at least checked the hashes first.
Are you going with adb reboot or fastboot reboot? If you're in fastboot mode, "fastboot reboot" is the one to use.

Hashes?? hahahah oops!
I actually made it past that part, I rebooted manually, it booted to fff, I kicked it to recovery mode with the power button and then performed a backup. Ran the next few commands with no problems.
I got to the part where I change the check_rooted file... when I run the mv command it tells me "Read-only file system".
EDIT!
I realized that I needed to go back into recovery mode to run the mv command. fastboot 5200 command, and rebooted... now I have twrp on the KF, I run the mv command again, but this time it says "no such file or directory". I hopped into the adb shell and cd'd over to the system/bin directory and did an ls command. Sure enough, it appears to be empty. But when I boot it up in normal mode, and cd over to /system/bin, it's full of files, including check_rooted.... So this is where I am at, I do not have a "check_rooted.bak" file in my bin directory, so I haven't quite finished rooting the KF.
EDIT again
OK, I suck at this, (obviously), I just needed to remount the system file and perform the command again and it worked... I now have check_rooted.bak
So I have completed all of the commands successfully, I have Superuser installed, and can access root in recovery mode no problem... but when I select root explorer in ES File Explorer, it tells me that it cannot be used on this device. What should I do next?
I think you may be missing steps, as you haven't mentioned copying the su binary.
Have a read here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1568340 (just skip all the fastboot mode parts, head straight to copying the su binary)
You were absolutely right... I was using that thread as a guide, and mounted the steps and pushed the file, but never confirmed that it moved over... did it again, and done! Thanks!

Sorry guys, I've been reading all night trying to figure this out, and now my brain's all twisted, and I feel like I'm missing something obvious...
Is there a super-quick way to boot the Fire into fastboot mode once you already have FFF, TWRP, and a rooted rom installed??
The threads I've been reading all night seem to be geared to someone who doesn't have all that installed yet.
Can it be done with terminal emulator on the fire?
I had assumed it could be accessed from TWRP, but no dice. Would a quickboot app from the market get me there, like on almost every device I've used before?
Because of driver issues (that I still haven't solved) the only way I've done it before is when I installed FFF, and TWRP by shorting the board and using Ubuntu from a USB stick. (I'm wanting to switch from just having an ICS Rom to dual-booting, and I have everything ready, but I just am getting confused over how to simply get onto fastboot to accomplish this.
Thanks to anyone in advance that might help...

I need windows to recognize it that way though. That's the whole problem... I've NEVER gotten windows to pick it up but one time... Weeks ago.. Then it was softbricked.. Tried everything and finally had to use the shorting trick with the Ubuntu stick.
No, this post is about me asking if there's some other way once I've installed FFF, TWRP, and am rooted. (Like terminal emulator or something like a rooted app from the Play Store.)

Apparently, I can solve all my headaches by just using a factory cable?
Okay...Here's my problem there:
I've probably got 12-15 Android tablets around the house, and at least 6 phones: The number of USB cables for these devices I've collected is just silly, what with extra chargers and whatnot...
I'm sure one of them is a factory cable from when I opened my Fires.
Could anyone please, upload a picture of THEIR factory cable so I can figure out which one is which? I promise to shut up about fastboot for a while if anyone could do me that solid.

Well, I've got a ton of cords. If any work, then what's all the talk about using factory cables for, or the jigs that replicate the connection that people sell?
Btw, I just tried the command from above in Ubuntu: no luck (the command went thru in kfu, but said "waiting for device"). Trying windows next, but I've got a feeling that won't work, as my drivers have never gotten to work right.

Yeah, Windows didn't care one bit when I plugged it in and turned it on. Booted straight into ICS, and still says waiting for device in the terminal.
See, I've been doing this stuff for hours... I know how to try this:
I just wanted to know if, with FFF and TWRP, and the ability to run Su in terminal emulator, if there might be an easier way.

Edit: Solved, thanks to Thepooch, who spent a lot of time on Teamviewer setting up a toolkit on a linux USB. No more headaches.
Hi everyone, a buddy of mine suggested this site could be helpful for someone with my issues (and I see there are a few like me...), so here goes...
I've been wanting to root my kindle for a bit now and decided to go for it. I'm not very technologically saavy, and am usually careful not to jump into something that seems out of my league. So anyways I was following the seemly straight-forward instructions here:
http://liliputing.com/2012/05/how-to-root-a-kindle-fire-with-software-version-6-3-1.html
and initially things went fine. However, when I clicked on option 2 "Install Permanent Root with Superuser." after a few minutes into this process (I didn't think to make a note of what it said) it stopped with some error. Since then my Kindle has been stuck on startup screen, I can turn it off and on, just not go anywhere. Since this point I haven't been able to get my Kindle connected with the KFU. I also have attempted to reinstall the drivers, but I get error messages.
I've read through most of the "before asking for troubleshooting help" here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1644970, and I think I have a better idea of everything than before...but this isn't really my area of expertise for sure. But somethings I understand, others just make me more mixed up.
If anyone could lend a hand, that would be great...I'd certainly be grateful and if you need any more information than I have provided...please let me know!
Thanks,
Andrew

Hi,
After doing a complete wipe I installed an invalid OS and the kindle is not booting.
How can I solve this submitting a new ROM to install if the ADB driver doesn't recognize my kindle to upload it?
Recovery mode is working, but mounting is not, nor ADB sideload..
Is there any way to resolve this??
Thanks

The driver is recognizing the device apparently well, but I cannot mount the SD card to copy a ROM to install.. how can I proceed?
When you mount SD card, did you look in computer where drives are shown?

tnx a lot man!! it worked, i pushed a rom file and now i'm able to install it!!
thanks again!!
I've been trying on Windows, and followed the instructions, but when the Kindle rebooted, I didn't see any recovery menu. On Ubuntu now, and I installed Soupkit, adb, and fastboot. But I don't know what to do with these in Linux. I tried one guide, and it tried to load u-boot.bin, which wasn't included in the Soupkit install, and it turns out that Soupkit installed files in the wrong directory, so I tried making the directory path, and copying the files over there, and downloaded the u-boot.bin file I just ended up noticing and putting it in both directories, and it still wouldn't work.
Also, am I supposed to install Fire Fire Fire before TWRP?
Can't use twrp without fff bootloader

Know how I go about getting fff installed? I tried looking up "Install Fire Fire Fire Kindle 6.3.3" and other similar searches, all I got was how to unbrick with twrp and stuff like that.
Edit: nvm, didn't notice the link. I tried Soupkitchen without the Kindle plugged in. Am I supposed to run it with it plugged in? I tried to run Soupkitchen again, but it's not letting me now.

I rooted it with Saferoot. Ran a root check app to make sure, and it said it's rooted. I tried following the instructions on the page you linked but it ends up pointing to Soupkit and it says no such file or directory when I try the push command.
I have adb.exe, fastboot.exe, and u-boot.bin in the Soupkit directory. I used the official Soupkit download, through terminal.

Kindle must be in fastboot mode to use SoupKit.
If windows command prompt says " it says no such file or directory when I try the push command."
adb/fastboot files are not in same older as command prompt is pointing to.

I have the exe files in the Soupkit folder. Is there anything I'm missing that I need to get fbmode to work? I'll go look around for a pack.

yes, SoupKit can not put the Kindle Fire with system version 6.3.3 in fastboot mode, you need to manually push the files with adb

I have the fbmode file. I always get stuck at the push command. I know I have the files that are needed, and I have two Soupkit folders just in case. One in jason/bin and the other in bin. I even tried copying the files in the files folder directly into the Soupkit folder, still no joy. I have adb.exe, fastboot.exe, fbmode.exe, and u-boot.bin and haven't messed around with any other folders I think. This is a sample of my terminal text.
[email protected]:~$ adb push fbmode /data/local/tmp
bash: /home/jason/bin/SoupKit/files/adb: No such file or directory
According to http://lifehacker.com/the-easiest-way-to-install-androids-adb-and-fastboot-to-1586992378
enter and run this command:
Code:
sudo apt-get install android-tools-adb android-tools-fastboot
And you're all set up! You can send commands to your device from any terminal window.

It says nothing was upgraded, and I already have the newest version. And when I try the push command, I still get the same error. Tried skipping ahead to adb shell and still getting a no such file or directory error. I downloaded the files that were linked in the guide, and I'm pretty sure I'm missing certain files, but I forgot what those were. I borked my bootloader when trying to use EasyBCD to replace Android x86 with Ubuntu. Ended up plugging in my spare drive and grabbing Ubuntu off of that, and loading it from my USB, so I have an OS again, but the files I had were lost, so I've been having to hunt down missing files.
Edit: I have Superuser on my Kindle. I wonder if there's anything I can do from there to make things easier.
