I understand the problem with writing to an external SD card and i am reluctant to root the device to solve it. Considering the use of a usb flash drive as an alternative. Do the SD card problems go away if i use a flash drive.
Also will any generic flash drive and otg cable work or is there a specific model(s) to use for the Galaxy Tab S.
Root it and your problems will go away.you can flash back to stock without root anytime

For those who will not root and loose their warranty, the problem is that the Google imposed restrictions in KitKat (full, unrestricted read/write permissions to the micro SD cards/external storage). Samsung has mitigated that issue with its file folder app. Unfortunately if you want to use other file managers (e.g. ES File Explorer) they do not have full write permissions to external storage.
Where this is a pain is that Samsung's file folder app does not include features such as access to network shares (CIFS or Samba). So if I wanted to copy a file from a network share I first need to use ES File Explorer and copy a file to the Tab S internal storage then use Samsung's file folders app to move it to the micro SD card. Those kind of restrictions are simply a pain in the butt.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using XDA Premium HD app
So, as I see it the only options we have:
1) Root and loose warranty and OTA updates
2) Wait for the warranty to expire then root
3) Deal with it
4) Hope this is over with in Android L

or you can create a ftp server on your pc using the builtin windows features and create a link to folder, then add it to your Samsung "My Files" app.
The only time I've ever used a warranty is when I dropped my phone from the top of a silo at work.it straight smashed into an unrecognizable state. That was my ATT S4 and it was rooted(warranty exchange was no problem).

Thanks for that info. Not as common as a network share but it is a legitimate work around which avoids additional software installs. It seems strange for them to support ftpbut not a network shares.

What really mystifies me is we can't write directly to the external sd card but we can still install apps from unknown sources....a much higher risk for bad things to happen than copying a doc file or mp3 etc. to the external SD card.
This app is ok for my T705.

Yes this is the app you use right after rooting the device because root is required.
If you want to trip Knox and your warranty.
The OP is worried about Knox and his warranty so the options we post won't help

Guys if you are using Odin to flash Rom or Recovery on Windows 7 64 bit computer then make sure you put the ops and md5 files on the root of C:\
I was trying to flash the CWM recovery but it wasn't successful and when I tried to reboot my phone it was stuck on boot . Then from the instruction of a thread I moved my ops and md5 file to root of C:, and amazingly it worked like a charm.
I thought that I should share it with you guys.

Thats true, it is some Windows permission issue I think. This doesnt't happen on all PCs, but if it happens it is the easiest solution.
Other programs have also issues with files in some directions/folders.
C:/ is just always mentioned because it is 99% a hard drive, and it has to be in the root of a hard drive(to be sure).

Haha,, you are right. However most of the modern applications that are being written in modern languages dont have such kind of problems. I think Odin is using very old windows API calls for handling files, but i am not sure about it as i dont have source code.

Perhaps, but as ODIN is Samsung tool, I just don't know....
If you look at Service Manual I upped some time ago, in Section 6 Level 1 Repair, you see Samsung use this Multi Downloader for their own service ppl tool........
[this is PDF in Google Docs]
sorry, the manual is all over the place, but ODIN is there!!!
But, as you can see, files could be anywhere, so I don't know.
Anyway, cheers, I have a cold beer waiting!!!!

Hey guys, after alot of heartache over this stupid problem, I found a fix.
Wi-Fi didn't work with Jelly Bean updates .200 and .211 in Syria and Iran no matter what.
Now with Root Explorer, and the attached file u can forget about that forever.
Instructions:
1. Extract this file to the SD card.
http://www.4shared.com/file/gANo_9ON/wpa_supplicant.html
2. Go to system/bin copy the file wpa_supplicant to the SD card "backup"
3. Now copy the attached file to the same folder and fix permissions.
4. Reboot and have fun.
Note that Wi-Fi should be turned off during the whole process.
Credit to my friend Raed.
And pray that I pass my pathology exams.
Regards.

Still better that to work in airplane mode.
Hope this will be fixed in the new build.

if you a Battlefield 4 player maybe you should try a commander mode in your mobile
but sadly Dice made this App for Tablets only so you cant download this app from google play
but if you can get the APK file and DATA then you can play commander mode in your mobile
1- Download APK and DATA
2- install the APK file
3- Unzip the data files and but it in Android/obb
and now you will be able to play Battlefield 4 as acommander
PS : you should purchase this game to be able to play it and you have to be level 10 or greater to be able to play commander mode

Thanks for the awesome work. I've been running this on my Nexus 5 over LTE with no issues what so ever.
Is it possible to use it as battlescreen?
Commander app seems to launch fine, but i don't want to play commander, just use the device as a battlescreen / minimap. Can't find the "battlescreen" button, not in the Commander app and neither in Battlelog.
It is just saying to me "Download failed because you may not have purchased this app" :crying:

Here goes:
--Backed up wife's Galaxy S III (T999) in March, along with all app data, using Kies 3
--She was using an app called Notational Acceleration to keep a large number of notes, but no cloud sync
--T999 was replaced, due to water damage, with a Galaxy S III LTE (T999L)
--I figure the notes she made must be somewhere in the backup, so I found a file (com.kludgenics.android.notes-1.apk) that I thought might have them
--tried opening that file on her T999L and a different T999 and got the same message, "There is a problem parsing the package."
How can I find these notes in the backup? Am I looking in the wrong place? What other folders could they be in? I've tried emailing the developer but get no answer.
I greatly appreciate any help.
Wouldn't know where to find the notes but what you found was only the installer for app, the .apk no actual user information is there. The only place it would still have a possibility of being on is probably the phone unless Kies backs up Android data. You could try looking in the /Android/data folder. Alas, if it isn't there I think it is lost forever.

Thanks so much for responding.
I had a feeling the .apk was not the right place, I've used .apk files to install before. It was the only thing I could find that pointed to the app, so it was really wishful thinking. The original phone is back with t-mobile.
I just checked Kies 3, and it gives the option to back up the apps but not the app data; it doesn't seem like it's even possible to do with the program! I need to search for another backup program for Samsung phones, I'm used to complete backups with CWM on my nexus phones so I'm not used to having these problems. What terms do you suggest I use when searching for the ability to back up the /Android/data folder? Is that just considered "app data?"
I appreciate your help.
When you open that folder on your phone you generally find names of some apps on your phone. I don't use CWM or Kies so I wouldn't know about either unfortunately.

As for the /Android/data folder, is data only located there if the app has root access? Because /Android/data is a root folder, correct?

once again, you don't provide much information. it wouldn't be too surprising, and in this case my first guess, that the filemanager you are using is displaying wrong information based on its assumption that the transfer was successful. this could cause the wrong (cached) list of files to be loaded each time, unless the phone gets restarted…

The initial root file system is a RAM disk. If you create folders or add files to /, they are wiped-out after a reboot. You could hack the RAM disk to add your folder but it would be easier to just create a file in /system and plop your music files in there.
