Custom recovery before rooting - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

I recently bought Note 2 and did factory reset/wipe data. I was thinking to root it and thought I should take backup first. When I go into recovery mode I can see only below options.
-reboot system now
-apply update from ADB
-apply update from ext storage
-wipe data/factory reset
-wipe cache partition
-apply update from cache.
Just want to let you know that I had S4 rooted before and when I configure Note 2 it asked me google account and restored team win application and etc. I did wipe data/factory reset couple of times but still can not see backup option. Please help

You need a custom recovery installed before you can do a backup.

You need to Odin the custom recovery, I suggest Phil advanced recovery, it is in the original development thread for the note 2... Download the tar file, put your phone on download mode and plug it in to your pc then flash the recovery tar file thru Odin...

What about recovery? I'm on 4.4.2 and flashing recovery thru Odin doesn't work. I read somewhere else that the recovery files need to be renamed but I don't know how to do it. Can anyone help me?

Flash this with odin and uncheck the reboot option.
https://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/l900/philz_touch_6.07.9-l900.tar.md5/
After it flashea disconnect phone and pull battery. While holding down vol +, menu, and power insert your battery and dont release keys till you see boot splash. You will then boot into recovery where you can backup current rom. Once you have backed up do a custom backup and only select efs. This has to be done by itself or it wont backup. Make sure that you put your efs backup someplace safe (on pc or cd) in case you need it in the future.

where does the file goes when i downloud it from my phone and not from my pc?

Mobile ODIN will allow you to do this.
As for where the file goes, the default download location from the browser is /sdcard/download.
If you're using the XDA app, the default is /sdcard/xda_download.

Assuming your phone is rooted, you don't need a pc to flash a ..zip rom or .tar.md5 files. Mobile Odin will do the .tar.md2 and Goomanager will install a TWRP recovery and flash .zip files.

If you have a custom recovery flashed (I use CWM, witch you can get by downloading the ClockWorkMod app from the play store.), then all you have to do is boot into recovery (While powered off, hold volume up + home + power button untill the Samsung logo appears then immediately release all.), and install .zip from sd card. The files you download are most likely in your "download" folder on your sdcard. Make sure when you boot into recovery, to do a full wipe/factory reset, wipe cache, and wipe divalk cache (advanced menu) before flashing. This ensures a clean flash. Happy flashing!

[Q] Do i need the bootloader unlocked to flash roms

Hey I've been tryin to flash roms for a coupla a weeks now. I know how to do the flash I'm trying to install the zips but every it just comes up with Installation Aborted. Do i need to have the bootloader unlocked to do this. Or do the zips have bugs in them.
What kernel/recovery are you flashing? What ROM are you currently running?

You need a safe recovery, DOWNLOAD THE ROM YOU WANT FIRST... Then install mobile Odin and flash a kernel called el26 then when the phone turns off quickly hold power and vol up. Then wipe cache, dalvik, and factory wipe(above cache). Then flash the ROM YOU WANT

Thats what i keep doing every time it fails. I'm using AGAT recovery stuck on FI27. i am trying o flash the Jelly version of MIUI. what is considered a safe recovery for that rom. I also have to download roms and stuff through my phone because our home internet is so slow its only 60KB/s so then i plug in my phone and move odin to the desktop. Is that causing it to fail.

i just want to grab some files! before restore
u will need flash a custom recovery 1st then will be able to backup,
If you were on stock rom , I've noticed during Boot Loop if you flash the Stock rom will not wipe your data only Messages, contacts and Call log will be wiped.
If you follow my way you won't lose any files.
But you can backup everything via adb.

That's a kernel and not a recovery.
Download a recovery in .Tar format.
Flash it the same way you rooted.

any ideas?
and also costum binary download: Yes (4 counts)
from 1 i did the process 3 times
Firstly, before anyone can truly help you you need to mention your phone setup such as the Rom you're using, rooted/not rooted, etc.
If you're rooted and have a custom recovery then just wipe your system and dalvik cache partition and flash the same Rom again. All your personal files will still be intact.

Phone can't reboot with out sdcard boot.IMG on it?

My phone was hard bricked yesterday. After I flashed ROM with out wipe data and system. Phone was dead I tried everything by pressing three fingers pull battery so on so on.
Final I use unbrick img file write on sdcard . and I insert on my phone then pressing home, volume up and power after three times phone reboot it.
Now if I pull out sdcard with unbricked boot.IMG on it phone can't reboot.
For more info. I did restore from my nandroid backup. Still the same . any help would great appreciate.

After a hard-brick like yours (and mine as well) some part of the phone's difficult-to-fix/access memory eMMC is damaged or corrupted. I recommend using a .pit file to partition the phone's internal memory, then follow up with a stock ROM flash. And if you've got 4.3/the MK3 OTA, only flash 3.3+ ROMs.
That's because you never Odin flashed a stock tar. You need to boot into download mode with the sdcard and then flash a stock tar. Otherwise you will still have corrupt partitions on your device and it will not boot without the sdcard which has the proper data.
Cnexus thank you so much always you did great job. Can I use mobile Odin? Do you have one Odin tar ROM can't find sorry.
