Mobile ODIN will allow you to do this.
As for where the file goes, the default download location from the browser is /sdcard/download.
If you're using the XDA app, the default is /sdcard/xda_download.

Assuming your phone is rooted, you don't need a pc to flash a ..zip rom or .tar.md5 files. Mobile Odin will do the .tar.md2 and Goomanager will install a TWRP recovery and flash .zip files.

If you have a custom recovery flashed (I use CWM, witch you can get by downloading the ClockWorkMod app from the play store.), then all you have to do is boot into recovery (While powered off, hold volume up + home + power button untill the Samsung logo appears then immediately release all.), and install .zip from sd card. The files you download are most likely in your "download" folder on your sdcard. Make sure when you boot into recovery, to do a full wipe/factory reset, wipe cache, and wipe divalk cache (advanced menu) before flashing. This ensures a clean flash. Happy flashing!

Custom recovery after ExynosAbuse

I have rooted my N7105 (Orange UK) successfully using ExynosAbuse. Now I would like to install a custom recovery without using a PC.
I can imagine doing this using Rom Manager, MobileOdin or GooManager, using some version of twrp or cwm.
Has anyone here done that, and what did you use?

You can use Mobile odin
First copy CWM recovery in tar (or get recovery.img from zip) to SD card
Open Mobile odin-recovery-select file you have copied and flash

I always use Mobile Odin Pro to flash custom recovery. It's easy and can done without PC (Just need to copy the custom recovery zip file to SD/internal storage to flash)
Great, thanks will try this. Any particular recovery that is known to work well with the N7105?

Note ii won't boot into cwm, only stock recovery

Hello,
I was trying to flash a kernel but after some reboots I noticed that the phone won't boot in cwm but only in the stock recovery. I reflashed cwm through rom manager but nothing happened. I then tried to install twrp but again nothing happened. I was told that I have to delete 2 files inside system to make cwm stick but the files do not exist for a reason. Please help me guys!

You can flash TWRP without ODIN if your phone is rooted.
Go to the playstore and download "goomanager" a free app
and click the menu softkey on left side of phone then select
"flash open recovery script".
Then wait til it gets done and when it's done just reboot the phone.
That's the easiest way to do it and TWRP is way better than cwm.
Good luck!
Awesome thank you so much you da best

Custom recovery before rooting

I recently bought Note 2 and did factory reset/wipe data. I was thinking to root it and thought I should take backup first. When I go into recovery mode I can see only below options.
-reboot system now
-apply update from ADB
-apply update from ext storage
-wipe data/factory reset
-wipe cache partition
-apply update from cache.
Just want to let you know that I had S4 rooted before and when I configure Note 2 it asked me google account and restored team win application and etc. I did wipe data/factory reset couple of times but still can not see backup option. Please help
You need a custom recovery installed before you can do a backup.

You need to Odin the custom recovery, I suggest Phil advanced recovery, it is in the original development thread for the note 2... Download the tar file, put your phone on download mode and plug it in to your pc then flash the recovery tar file thru Odin...

What about recovery? I'm on 4.4.2 and flashing recovery thru Odin doesn't work. I read somewhere else that the recovery files need to be renamed but I don't know how to do it. Can anyone help me?

Flash this with odin and uncheck the reboot option.
https://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/l900/philz_touch_6.07.9-l900.tar.md5/
After it flashea disconnect phone and pull battery. While holding down vol +, menu, and power insert your battery and dont release keys till you see boot splash. You will then boot into recovery where you can backup current rom. Once you have backed up do a custom backup and only select efs. This has to be done by itself or it wont backup. Make sure that you put your efs backup someplace safe (on pc or cd) in case you need it in the future.

Uncheck auto reboot in Odin. Once the flashing process finishes, remove battery, put it back and press volume up+home+power. It will boot to CWM
