Coming from note 3, please help. - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am seriously considering moving from my note 3 to the g3. Unfortunately in UK can only buy the 2gb ram version, so just worried if this will result in a decrease of performance?. I have read several reviews but the results are never conclusive so was hoping to hear from anyone who has used a note 3 before. My note 3 was also rooted and cpu speed clocked up to 2.8 instead of g3 2.5. Can we clock the cpu speed of the g3 considering lack of dev support for the g3?.

Check out this thread, where others (and myself), who have made the switch from the Note 3 to the LG G3 and gave our impressions and takes on the two.

LG G4 or Note 4/Edge?

I was very exited when I saw the G4 with 5.5'' LCD and superb camera but now the lack of root (and roms) makes it less sexy that's why I wonder if the Note 4/Edge is not a better phone.
Here's what I found:
Advantages G4:
-New 2015 model
-Excellent camera both in daylight and night
-RAW
-5.5'' 1440p while easily one handed thanks to better body size
-Weight about 20grm less
-LCD screen means Zero burnins, good for Car apps
-Less lags than Note 4
-Better loudspeaker
Advantages Note4/ Edge:
-Rooted!
-Excellent camera in daylight, good in low light.
-Very crisp screen 1440p at 5.7''
-Cool Edge gadget on the Note Edge
-Better resale
-Ported S6 TW makes it less laggy than stock Note 4 one
-No Touchscreen problem
-Better Audio using earphones with Exynos version
You're in the wrong forum. This is the G4 You're going to get primarily G4 votes. If you go to the Note 4/E thread and post this, you'll get, as you might not be surprised by, votes for the Note 4/E.
Both are good phones. Coming from the Note 4, I suggest the G4. No lag or overheating. Camera is much better on G4. Battery life is also superior. You'll miss the s-pen though.

I too recommend the g4, I too have come from the note 4 and don't miss it at all no more. G4 camera, audio, and display is superior. Colors are accurate where the note 4 is amoled yes black levels are legit dark but colors are fairly saturated to make that pop feature. Battery life too is superior with the g4.
I went OPO to G4 back to OPO to Note 4 and haven't look back. I will try to come back to the G4 if/when root is released but now, in both phones present state, there is better performance and better functionality in the Note 4. Only area the G4 shines over a rooted, cleaned Note 4 is camera performance and the gap isn't so big that you can ignore all the areas where is pales to the Note 4.
Mind you, I said a rooted, cleaned Note 4. In original state, Note is laggy and not using full potential. But root it, clean it, install some of the rooted goodies and the Note shines.
Goodluck finding a legit, not clone version.. YMMV
My vote is also G4, otherwise phablet, I'd prefer the Nexus 6.
I had the Note 4 Edge and moved to the G4. The Lollipop update for the Note destroyed the responsiveness and battery life. It was terrible. T-Mobile admitted they were getting poor performance from the handset after the update.
So I'd say G4.
Looks like Root is not far now for all G4, though the "touchscreen issue" is still not fixed , I wonder if it's not a hardware problem...
Anyway I think the wise move is to wait for the unveiling of Note 5 in less than 20 days, not for the device itself but for the price downfall on both G4 and Note 4/edge, by then I think all G4 will get root and the touchscreen issue will finally be fixed.
I have both and like some features of the Edge and vise versa on the G4. By far the battery life on my G4 is spectacular, cant speak for the rest. The Edge battery is disappointing. I have factory reset after both 5.01 and 5.1 and can take it off the charger and within a couple minutes of use will be at 98%.
So the G4 got Root for mainly all variants!!
Price is still a little more than normal here, I am pretty sure it can drop a 100$ anytime soon
What about the Touchscreen issue? Is it hardware or software?
The Note 5 is releasing soon. If you are in the market and can wait, I would see what the Note 5 has in store. I highly recommend the G4 but if you like the SPen it would be wise. I heard August 8th. I'm not sure when they would be available to buy though. The Note 3 was out in September. The Note 4 was available in October. This year, Samsung is wanting to launch PRIOR to the Apple conference in Sept.
I would wait for Note 5 unveiling just for the impact on G4's price, the Note 5 itself will be overpriced for months and would not have SD card

I think the only advantage of the Note 4/Edge is that they have some custom roms, the G4 even with the Root is not able to get custom roms because of the bootloader and lack of rom sources.
A custom kernel could fix the touchscreen issue but the lack of kernel source is also a problem on G4, though hardware wise it's superior in every field

Note 5 Vs G4

Hi... i'm in love with my G4 like most of you probs, but for some reason there is part of me that wanna buy the note 5 despite it does not have sd slot and removeable battery.
What pisses me off a bit about the G4, is the broken kernel it has that causes weird lags at certain games and cpu heavy emulators, like PPSSPP.
I've posted in the QA section about the kernel issue and how rarely the big cores get used, i've seen that angry birds 2 works smoother on S6 vs G4, where G4 lags from time to time.
All in all, would u consider a note 5 to be good phone or just another big S6?
I've been reading up on the Note 5 as well and while it seems to run better in general, I have heard anecdotally, from various reviews, that the Note 5 also experiences intermittent lags. I think that as we fall in love w/ our devices, we tend to become very sensitive and nit picky to anything that appears less than optimal. That being said, my #1 reason for moving to the Note 5 is for the bigger screen and smaller bezels (i could be mistaken on this point).
U moved from G4? How is it?
I'm just looking the Note 5 as a possible upgrade...but think I'll be sticking to my G4 for now. I can't do w/o the replacement battery and microsd card. Not to mention tap to wake and the back buttons.
ye after reading everything on Note 5 on this last 2 days, i highly decided against it.
I must say G4 is really the best flagship, it has best camera, very good performance, BETTER memory management than GS6 and Note 5, sd slot, removeable battery excellent screen with true colours....
All in all i'm looking towards new SD820 on G4 Pro or LG Nexus 2015 whatever it gonna be called, if they follow G4 footstep and implant new SD820 with all it's benefits, i think we gonna have undisputed champion for a while.
Lol . me too . im just itching to get a new phone.
Since i paid full for my g4 i could subsidize my next one . but it must have micro sd slot.
Or ill keep my current h812

Refund Snapdragon For Exynos?

My carrier (Bell in Canada) has agreed to let me do a refund on my Snapdragon Note 7 because of the recall. I was thinking of then going and buying a Exynos version because I get lag with my Snapdragon version which drives me nuts. I was looking into B&H Photo because they provide a 1 year warranty and say they will be getting new stock of the "f" model around Sept 18 that is safe from the recall. I would end up paying about $500 extra to switch versions and be contract free. Is it worth it? Is rooting and performance that much better?

Yes, the Exynos is much smoother in real life. The SD is a bit of a fail in the Note 7.

I agree get the Exynos if you can. The Snapdragon is full of problems and terrible battery life compared to the Exynos version.
Literally the only way I can make my Exynos lag is too open all 120 apps while multi windows + running Antutu (exaggeration obviously) in all seriousness I have never seen my device lag even when gaming order and chaos 2, dead trigger 2, Pokemon Go, clash of clans..etc

I talked to them today over chat support. I asked about exchange or refund. They seemed reluctant at first but said were gonna put a note in my account for when I went back to the store I got it from... Saying to refund it. No if they actually do so at the store or what trouble they give me is another thing.
So here is my story...
I bought the Note 7 in Hong Kong (SMN-9300). Normally in HK all previous note / galaxy releases have always come with the Exynos chipset. So to my surprise when i picked up my brand new Note 7 on September 2nd, It had the SD 820. After reading hundreds of posts on here and other forums and seeing lots of users claim the Exynos was better I went and bought a Singapore Version SMN-930F which comes with an Exynos CPU. After 2 days of using both I can honestly say there is LITTLE to no difference in real life everyday use.
I had let my obsession get the best of me and shelled out the money to buy a second Note 7 just because everyone was saying "Get the exynos" "Its soooo much better". This is total B.S. Im holding both devices right now and I can promise you there is NO huge noticeable difference. Ive heard reports of lags on both the Exynos and Snapdragon version. But both devices which i have run smooth and fine. The battery life is almost identical, perhaps slightly better on the Exynos. But its hardly noticeable at all. I find that the SD has MUCH better GPU performance and does not run nearly as hot as the Exynos.
After obsessively benchmarking both, I've come to the conclusion that they are almost identical in most cases. The SD version always destroys the Exynos on the Antutu (Which is mostly to test GPU / Graphics). While the Exynos crushes the SD on geek Bench (More CPU geared). As for other tests like Basemark OSII, Vellamo PCMark etc they both score almost identically. To be honest I really don't think these benchmark results mean much and are not very relevant to the everyday user. Because despite the bench mark results, I find that the Exynos handles games / graphic intensive tasks just as well as the SnapDragon 820. And the SD runs as fast, and is just as responsive as the Exynos.
The moral of the story is don't over think things like i did! Save your $500 bucks and stick with the SD version. After using both devices for a few days i can tell you from HONEST experience there is no noticeable difference between the 2. They are both totally capable of runnings apps, web browsing, watching movies, playing games and things that most users need. If there was a HUGE difference between the 2 I would tell you go ahead and spend the $500. But in all honesty you will be disappointed when you shell out the $500 bucks and get the Exynos and notice there is little to no noticeable difference.
In you initial post, you stated that your SD version is laggy, and thats why you want to exchange to the Exynos version. But take a look at some of the SM-930F (Exynos) posts on XDA and you will see users facing the same problems with the Exynos version. From lagged typing / keyboards, Boot Loops, Screen issues to over all lagged performance. Yet as mentioned I have two Note 7's (SD & Exynos) and have not had any of the above mentioned problems on either. I suspect the problem could be related to the early produced models, Battery issues, or software issues. Have you tried to factory reset your note? Make sure it has the latest software update and try it then?
Also keep in mind both devices are still reasonably new. And with the whole exploding battery fiasco, Samsung probably has not had much time to focus on software updates. Im sure after the Battery / recall issues are resolved and the device has been on the market for a few months both versions will get several updates which will make them even better.
Hope this helps!

I think you're missing the biggest advantage of the Exynos variant. A lot of users love it for its superior battery life, and having used yours for little time, you probably wouldnt have had enough time to thoroughly test it. Correct me if im wrong!!
I would happily dish out $500 for a Note 7 that lasts 2 extra hours of the screen on, especially with less lag. I can personally confirm the SD Note 7 is trash.
the only issue I'm having with the exynos is button lag (have to keep pressing the button esp on the phone app before it works) and occasional reboots. It also hung when sending a SMS whilst listening to music, taking 2 restarts to go back to normal.

Ive been using both phones (Exynos & Snapdragon) for a few days now. Again im using the INTERNATIONAL version of the SD (SM-N9300). This model was only released on September 2nd, so maybe its better than the US snapdragon version released almost a month before. Meaning maybe samsung has made some changes / tweaks to the phone to make it run better.
- Lag : When comparing the 2 I see little to NO lag in either phone. And to be honest when I do see the occasional bit of lag its on the Exynos version! This normally happens when typing . I have yet to experience lag on the SD version.
- Battery life : I Can confirm that there is NO where near a 2 hour advantage. I have left both phones on next to each other for 2-3 hours strait and the difference in battery drop has been max 3-5%( So for example the SD would be at 85% and the Exynos would be at 88%).
And if you are advising him to "happily dish out $500 for 2 hours battery life" That sounds a bit silly. For $500 bucks you could go buy yourself a whole second phone like the OnePlus 3. Which would give you a lot more for your money.
Hell for $500 bucks you could grab a brand new OnePlus 3 + External portable charger + order a pizza!
Also as mentioned I'm almost certain the difference in battery life is no where near 2 hours. More like an extra 15-30 minutes at MOST. I will post more accurate details after testing the phones further in the coming days.
As of now the ONLY advantage I'm seeing with the Exynos is the ability to root it now. And that is presuming that you are willing to VOID the warranty on a brand new $800-900 phone you just bought. Im sure down the line the SD version will be rooted. And with everything available today (App De-enabler, Helium, etc) rooting is not much of a priority for most as it used to be. I would honestly be hesitant to root my Exynos version being that its a expensive devise and still very new. I don't want to risk voiding my warranty just yet.
So in short:
BOTH VERSIONS - Little to no lag, Perform fine.
Exynos - Slightly better battery (3-5% overall is my estimate), ability to root NOW, if you are willing to void your warranty.
SnapDragon (SM-N9300 International version) - Slightly better GPU processing. Does not get as hot when running heavy / graphic intensive games. No lag issues with keyboard. No crashes / boot loops yet.

So you don't experience the issue with the Snapdragon where the phone will be super fast like 90 percent of the time and then just gets super leggy and slow... So that for example if you're typing you have to wait for it to catch up... Typing one letter at a time? That's what happens to mine... 90 percent fast. .. 5 percent slow and 5 percent unbearablly slow. It doesn't seem to have any pattern or reason... Every with very little open it will start to stutter like that.

Nope.
I have been using the SM-N9300 (Hong Kong version) of the Note 7 w/ the Snap Dragon 820 for 6 days now. Have not had a single lag issue. No problems whatsoever with the typing. I have installed and used the stock Samsung, Google and Swift Key keyboards and all of them work perfectly fine with no lag whatsoever.
What is funny is that the Exynos version I recently purchased and have had for almost 3 days now, has had that lag with typing. But only once or twice and nothing too extreme. There is actually a whole thread of people using the Exynos version who are experiencing the Key board lag issue here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-7/how-to/galaxy-note-7-singapore-thread-sm-t3444909
and
here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-7/help/note-7-repeated-restart-bootloop-issues-t3444510/page11
Snapdragon = locked bootloader.
Exynos= unlocked.
That's all that needs to be said and should be an easy choice if your here on XDA.
sent from my Note 7 or S6
Might be blasphemy here but after years of custom ROMs on S3 and shortly on S5 (which made the experiences great, no doubt), I can't think of any reason to need root with what I can do on the Note 7 as it is. Even Good Lock takes me back to that nice notification and quick settings I was used to. Of course that's just my requirements of the phone, no doubt plenty want root.

Is this phone still worth buying as of today?

I'm about to get a new phone and Zenfone 2 is one of the contenders..
Does this phone have any issues that affects most people? How is the intel SoC, i heard that not every game / app supports this chip and then it's emulated which affects performance, does this happen often?
Right now i'm considering - ZE551ML 3/32GB, ZX551ML 4/64GB, Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 (Snapdragon 625), Moto G5 (3/16GB).
My Opinion
It was a good option in its release, but nowadays I think that there better options. It has some problems that depend on your luck like malfunctions on the sim card slot or the power button. It can appear or not. About the Intel SoC they give up, so there's no more support, but a never had any problem with it. The good new is that the community is very active so if you like to customize your phone it's not a bad option at all. This is my personal experience with 1 year and half of use. About the others phones, I think that I don't know sufficient enough to make a good comparison.
PS: You may contemplate a bug on the governor of the CPU that can be solved if you know enough about kernel manipulation.
Got Zenfone 2 CPU 2.4GHz RAM 4GB, cost me US$225 1,5 years ago. Up to now there are no smartphone with the same specs cost near my phone

Well yeah, actually for $169.99 i can get Zenfone Zoom (4GB/64GB version) which has apparently better CPU / Camera than Zenfone 2, but from what i've seen the development on XDA is dead for this model..
If you need good battery life, go with redmi note 4. Zenfone 2 get 3,5 hours SOT, and note 4 can get 8~9 hours.

Is it worth it to upgrade from the Note 8?

There seems to be a numver of issues with the S20, and nothing has really tempted me to upgrade aside from this phone.
My phone is becoming useless though. It's very slow, has a terrible screen response, and the battery is shot. This phone has disappointed me more than any other Note, and I don't even use the S pen often.
I'm not waiting on the Note 20, so would you upgrade to the S20 from the Note 8?
My husband and I are discussing the options for which one, I'm probably going with the ultra so I can have the camera, but we will never have 5G anywhere we live so that part is useless.
Does BK package disabler or a similar program work with this phone? I know never being able to root the Note 8 drove me nuts.
Thoughts?
I have an unlocked note8 and bought the AT&T S20 plus.
For me, the answer is yes - it was worth it.
I debated a long time about the Ultra - I think both the plus and ultra models are wonderful.
"zoom" camera even on the regular S20 is objectively better than the Note8.

The Note20 will be better and faster than any S20 model.

Upgraded from note 8 to S20
I myself upgraded from a Note 8 to an S20.
Mind you it is the S20 and not S20+ or ultra.
Both are exynos so my experience will be biased for exynos markets only.
1. Screen : Not much different in terms of screen quality but that refresh rate, IMO is the best thing for me as I can scroll endless pages of instagram and youtube and website scrolling is so amazing.
2. Camera : By far the biggest improvement from the Note 8 is the camera modules here.
I am not much into 8K gimmics but using the ultra wide, the Smooth 60 fps in both 4k and full hd are phenominal. Pictures come out very good.
3. Battery life : Using the 120hz leaves very little room for better battery life than the Note 8 but I am sure if in a pinch, dropping the screen refresh rate to 60 will easily give me a couple extra hours. So it will be good for those long road trips.
4. The best part , THE SMALL SIZE : Well, not really a small size at 6.2 inches. However, it is a huge difference between the huge note and this little handy yet powerful phone. The note 8 is roughly the size of s20+ and beleive me the note feels cluncky as hell now that I am used to the size of s20.
5. App opening speeds and basic day to day performance is far superior to that note.
Note: You may feel like the s20 heats up like crazy if used in continuation a lot or if some high end game is played for long, well I faced that problem a lot and I have already opened a thread in the discussion sections to talk with other owners about the problem. I found out that restoring from my note 8 using samsung switch was the biggest mistake I could do. I then cleaned the phone by doing a factory reset and set it up as a new device and I must say, I could not be any happier.
I would say go for the S20. You will not regret it.:fingers-crossed:
Thanks,
Kunal
